I've been on the hunt for some good Japanese curry, and I was lucky enough to find this place. I've ordered the curry on two occasions - once with pork katsu and once with chicken katsu. Both times have left me really satisfied and happy! The portion size for the price is great and it's hard to not feel full before finishing the bowl. The service is friendly and professional and the atmosphere is really nice. Hoping to return soon so I can try some other dishes!

This is what I got for $30. I will not be going back. These prizes are insane they didn't give me the miso soup. My tempura dipping sauce has an old funky taste. And I don't believe eight pieces of vegetables and a cup of white rice is worth twenty dollars. I cannot comment about this sushi or sushimi. Because I don't eat the stuff.

I am making this post because I purely wanted the Katsu curry and this place has the best one in town. Yes, a little pricey but definitely worth it. The sashimi was good as usual but their other dishes are just as good. Highly recommend.

The seaweed salad and regular salad was great with good ginger dressing. The sashimi pieces were generous and fresh. I got both tuna and salmon sashimi.

The rolls are done really well with a good presentation. The atmosphere is ok. The dining area is a bit small and the chairs are really hard. Service was good and staff is friendly.

Got take out shrimp tempura today, and they put clearly defective covers on the sauces. It leaked all over my food. No one likes soggy tempura, waste of money :(

I would not be so annoyed if it was a mistake and the top came off during travel, but intentionally putting bad lids on the sauces tells me they don't care about customer service. Service might be better at the restaurant, but would not recommend take out.

Genuinely one of the worst meals our party has been served. The Udon bowl had maybe 4-5 noodles in a rather unseasoned broth. Super disappointing. The katsudon was ATROCIOUS. I expected a crispy pork cutlet on a bed of fluffy rice with eggs and sauce. Instead I got soupy rice with a mangled pork chop. The breading was so soggy it sloughed off into the poorly made rice. The cutlet itself was far overcooked and dry. The sashimi wasn’t very cold which is concerning but otherwise was fine. Service was great, atmosphere dirty and sticky

They are not the same Sushi Matsuri that they were before they moved to their current location. The restaurant seems smaller and has a more cramped feeling. The salmon and tuna on the Rainbow Roll were too warm. The Dragon Roll was a little too heavy on the cream cheese. Everything was not rolled tightly. We had to ask for straws for our drinks. No condiment dishes for soy sauce. Plates are a much lower grade of plastic than before. It seems that the quality went down as the prices went up.

Prices are not right in here. It’s misleading. The chicken katsu meal costs $19 and some cents almost 20$ not $15 as listed here. The restaurant claims no cotrol over the prices listed here. They are not the ones who published this or have any access to this. They said they have reached out to Google and Google has not done anything to fix it. Giving it 3 stars because it’s annoying and because it didn’t seem like they were going to do anything about it probably because they could be benefiting from this false advertising.

It's fine. The hours are inconvenient and the food isn't good enough to put up with the hassle of scheduling time to eat there. Very cramped. Not even room for more than one person to walk down the aisle at a time. Ordered a warm sushi roll and it was room temperature. Only half was sushi and the rest was just loose chunks of fish. Bathroom floor was sticky.

A hidden gems right off the I-75. My first time here and it surely exceeded my expectations. The sushi here reminds me of eating in Japan in which the emphasis is on the fish quality and large portion on a small bite size rice. Beer is also served nicely chilled both can and glass.

Came here after many good recommendations, but despite the sushi being really good, I should say that it wasn't the best in town. The rolls are big and have a lot of flavor, but it is quite expensive. Other places in town have better rolls. On the photo, the roll on the left is a volcano roll, and the one on the right is kawaii roll. The cucumber-wrapped (kawaii) roll is really light and refreshing.

Compare differences between the sea urchin. Last time I got very bright color Sea urchin, which is great and it has at least two slices on the top of rice. Today it looks not very fresh and they added a quail egg to pretend to be a sea urchin(I didn’t order an egg on the top).
And I told the waitress she just said it depends on who is making it. And she refused to ask them redo it for me. And I also was charged 14$ for it. It didn’t deserve. And it’s not fair.

My daughter got food poisoning and we went to the ER. This was Saturday 26 for dinner. I was visiting my daughter in college for the day, and she was in the mood for sushi. She had 2 pieces of the raw salmon on rice, plus a simple tuna roll. We shared the tuna roll. The tuna tasted fine but the salmon was off. Three hours post lunch she was feeling nausea and her gut hurting. 11pm we took an Uber to the ER. It was food poisoning. Because she’d had her home made oatmeal and toast for lunch, we know it’s not the oatmeal. Sushi is our usual tradition but I doubt she will want sushi for a very long time. Me neither. I changed my return home so I could be at the hospital with her for anti nausea IV and hydration flush. Obviously there was much vomit and D (I will spare the reader). She was extremely weak, clammy, and freezing. The next day she felt a bit better post some sleep and due to the IV and cleansing her system, but tired and still a bit nauseated, so slept all day and night. Finally feeling a little better Monday morning though weak, and making her way in the heat to classes. She is a health sciences major with demanding classes, so this is also tough, as she has so much reading homework already.

This is the first and only time she ever got food poisoning. She felt like she was dying. Needless to say, she will never go back to that restaurant again. Her friends are appalled and won’t go there either. I certainly won’t when I visit.

Server was nice. I assume she didn’t touch the food, only carried the plates and she was friendly. I rated low for service because the chefs and all other staff count. I could see one of the Sushi chefs without gloves (I was sitting at the front by the balcony) though the others had gloves. He was finalizing the plates with sauce and adding ginger etc, which he would grab with his hand. I thought, “ok, he didn’t touch anything but the ginger and squirt bottle, but why not wear gloves? I hope he washed his hands really well.” I can’t erase this image from my mind. Why did we eat there?!

Super expensive and painful meal to say the least. ER bill is the least of my concern right now, I just can’t believe the stomach pain, nausea and discomfort this put my daughter through! Please beware of the quality of your food, refrigeration, and cleanliness. Everyone wear gloves. Clean, clean, clean. Quality matters! Not ok.

This is probably the best sushi in town and the prices are not bad at all , especially with the every other places going up in pricing. Note I said sushi. Some of their non~sushi dishes are subpar or poorly cooked but the rolls are amazing and their nigiri selection is pretty good. Would recommend the sashimi appetizer plate as well as the simple unagi roll. The restaurant is relatively small so seating is limited and close together. Food presentation is decent. Would definitely return again.

Couldn't eat what they brought because of all the pepper they put on it. Portion size was small. My friend ended up not happy with their order either. Waitress was rude, never refilled drinks, when we asked for the manager to take the uneatable food from the bill she said no. Left spoke to someone and they finally took it off the bill. Never saw a manager. Ordered shumai instead and they were cold to Luke warm. This place also is very small and cramped. Go to Arashi Yama. That place is amazing.

The food is always quality here, though the service can be hit or miss depending on how much they're busy. Love their Matsuri Special and Pork Katsu Rice. May have been an off day but 16 of us came for a birthday and no one liked the meals. My husband had a large amount of beef teriyaki that was swimming I sauce and many fatty pieces. My sushi was ok mostly falling apart and the same with the other sushi eaters. Three people had stomach issues hours after eating the food. The check was one long list and we had to check what we purchased and then get a bill. One curry dish tasted really awful. It was not a good experience.

Very good strip mall sushi restaurant.

Don't let the location deceive you, the quality and variety of the menu is very good and the service is spot on. They carry a good quality sake selection which I think personally that is a must for a good sushi restaurant. Now, for the fish quality... it is very fresh and the variety of top specialty types is very appealing. Sea urchin, horse mackerel, blue fin tuna, Japanese scallops are a few of the high end fish offered here. Price wise, you can expect it to be in the mid to low-high for the gooooood things they offer at the sushi bar. For the rest of the more common types the prices are very attractive so you can come here and indulge yourself with the ample variety of the common found fish all around and then finish your sitting with something more exotic and high end.
The service is very good. The staff is always on the lookout for any needs that may arise.
All in all, it's a repeatable experience in the Gainesville area.
Update: Quality and service remain top notch. The abundant fish selection is still a staple in this restaurant. Just when you think it's going to change with time, this place just surprises you and stays true to its fundamental principle... customer satisfaction. I still recommend and frequent this place when in the area.

The menu is very simple and I was frustrated because they don’t don’t offer the basics of what most Japanese restaurants offer, decided to order anyway, however, the service is soo bad I’ll never order again and will be sure to spread the word. Also they don’t have basic sauces, suck’s their teeth related my order to me when I walked in stating oh YOU ordered xyz… abruptly asked me if I needed chop sticks, I mean it was really bad. If I weren’t sent in there by someone else I would’ve canceled my order all together. I do not recommend this restaurant at all. Good isn’t even worth the attitude.

This is a mixed review. We ate here while staying in Gainesville on our way to the beach. We chose this restaurant because it had good reviews and my daughter is vegetarian. Typically she can get a veggie role or something she likes.

So the menu was fine and we all ordered something we liked. English was clearly a second language for the waitress…and that is fine. We explained that my daughter is vegetarian and would like her sushi on a separate plate. Somehow that became understood that she wanted extra ginger. No big deal.

When the food came out the food was pretty good except they put caviar all over the vegetable roll. When my daughter tried to explain that the vegetable roll should not have caviar the lady again though she wanted more ginger. We finally got her to understand that the caviar was the issue and we wanted a different roll.

She returned a few minutes later with the same plate with the same roll. We could tell because my wife had taken chop sticks with soy sauce on them and taken the wasabi off the plate. That spot was still there. They had “mostly” scraped the caviar off the roll and she now had a “pile” of ginger.

In the end we gave up. My niece ate the veggie roll and I took my daughter someplace else to eat. I truly do not mind folks working for a better life in a new country. But someone has to help this lady so the service is reasonable. Our request was not that complicated and we didn’t need a pile of ginger.

As a side note…the small mountain of ginger was really funny. I wish I had taken a picture.

The scallop dish was incredible here. Large juicy scallops with onions and mushrooms that had a slightly charred (NOT burnt) flavor. Got 3 sushi rolls that had super fresh fish that was stuffed in with way more meat than most rolls. Miso soup and salad were also good and calamari was pretty solid as well

Decided to try this place out with a few friends and we had an amazing experience! The food was delicious, super reasonable prices and Grecia, our waitress, had the best customer service I’ve experienced in a while. Will definitely be back!

Donburi!
Good sushi. sticky floors. Small but cozy.

Update
Not one week after I posted a review highlighting their donburi, they removed the donburi I ordered from the menu.

I have been back the times since I wrote the review.

the first time I showed up for lunch time on the weekend and realized that they were not open for lunch on weekends anymore. The new posted hours were Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 11:00 a.m.

The first time my food took 25 minutes to prepare and as a result I was late for my after lunch work meeting.

The third time I showed up and I noticed that they had changed their lunch hours yet again. Instead of starting at 11:00 a.m. they start at 11:30. So I had made the trip for nothing.

In a span of three weeks they had changed their lunch days and hours at least twice to my knowledge if not three times and I have no clue when I can or cannot show up for lunch. In on the time that I was successful the food took too long.

Leaving one star because that's my only option if not it would be negative. Gave this place two chances first time there was hair in my sushi second time we were asked to move from where we were because we were not dining in and getting to go which I understand but it was the way that it was asked an approached. Whoever the older Chinese lady is there was very rude when talking about the situation and put her hand close to my face which I then asked her to not do that please. Maybe I'll get around talking to the store manager or owner someday but in business I know these type of reviews ain't good for business and if anybody asks me or tells me about a sushi place this is one place I will tell them to avoid

The food is fabulous..but to stand up front and be ignored for 10 minutes without having so much as say " Hi ..just a minute" instead I was literally ignored. It's a shame to pass up a good meal but I refuse to be ignored

I went with a friend for the first time about a week ago and the service was pretty good though a teensy slow given that it was kind of empty. We tried the calamari and steamed gyoza for appetizers. The calamari was a little too salty but the sesame sauce balanced it out. The gyoza were good but delicate and they kept either slipping off my chopsticks or, when I applied a little more pressure, they just ripped into pieces. For my entree, I ordered the Mexican roll and I was sadly not impressed. My friend and I both agreed that it was a bit bland. I tasted the rice more than anything and I personally preferred the Mexican roll at Bento. I did however thoroughly enjoy my friend's volcano roll and had to stop myself from eating more of it (she probably would have stopped me anyway lol). Overall, the visit was solidly okay. I might visit again though I'd be trying something else there for sure.

Overall the food is good. And if you are looking for legit sushi this is probably the closest you will get in Gainesville hence why I gave at least 2 stars. The service was extremely slow and almost non-existent- which I do not fault them for, I assume they are short-staffed and have more work to sanitize thoroughly in this pandemic. What was unsettling to me is one of the women working in the restaurant had on a mask but she did not wear it properly the entire time we were there. She had the mask below her nose sometimes but most of the time she had it pulled below her mouth. She came into contact with everyone in that restaurant. She would do stuff in the back kitchen and then go to each table to deliver food. She would also stand closely to the guests to take their orders while the mask was below her mouth. The restaurant needs to ensure all of their workers are wearing their masks especially when standing closely to customers and taking orders or serving food. I don’t intend to go back if this restaurant doesn’t enforce the mask wearing for all employees. If that server was covid positive or came into contact with someone who was, she could expose everyone in the entire restaurant.

Ordered through Bitesquad because we wanted to try a new sushi place in town. Paid $60+ for basically nothing. The rolls were tiny with no condiments included...who doesn’t include spicy mayo? There was an option to add additional sauces for a charge but we assumed since we were buying “dinners” that there was no need for that. To top it off the rolls were incorrect.
I’ve heard great things about this place from a few friends but this was a major let down.

This is probably the most authentic sushi you're going to find in Gainesville. They don't have too many fusion dishes, which I appreciate. Additionally, their portions are very generous, especially the sashimi. I was impressed by the Tatsuta Age (fried chicken) because they kept the breading light and flavorful. Would definitely come here again!

Edit: Unfortunately, I had to take away a star because they got our order mixed up in some way or there was an extremely long wait past the wait time we were given over the phone for our last several takeout orders.

Fantastic sushi.
Simple and clean. The best sushi I've had in a while. The chef really seems to care about the food.
Wait staff was friendly, but really busy bagging up to-go orders, so service suffered a little, but we will be back.

First off, I got my order to-go so I can’t really speak to the service or atmosphere much. However, my phone order and quick stop inside were both pleasant. The cute decor definitely caught my eye and made me want to stop in.
Overall, portion size was slightly better than some sushi places, especially for the price. Quality was slightly above average. Like I said, I’d definitely go back.
If you’re looking for sushi that isn’t Dragonfly quality/prices then this is a good stop.

This place is absolutely amazing!!! Best Asian restaurant in Gainesville!! Reasonably priced as well. I would travel miles if I had to, but I don't! They are right across the street from me. They have amazing sushi, salads, soups, prepared foods, and more! I have been coming here since I moved here 10 years ago from Miami. They know me and my family by name and I refuse to go to any other restaurant for my sushi and other foods of the sort. Yum yummy yummiest!!!!!

Check your bill. The Matsuri time boat is listed on the website as $48. Ordered that and teriyaki chicken to go, and the bill came out to hundred bucks. I thought something was wrong, but didn't figure it out till I got home. Looks like we were actually charged $80 for the boat. I now see another review mentioning the same thing, so I am not the only person that has brought this to their attention.

My friend went to get a take out order today and has been at the bar for 2 hours, waiting for the order. Tables were sat, served, and left before he received the order. I've never heard of any sushi bar taking this long for six rolls. Terrible service, I would go to volcanic sushi over them any day.

The prices here are jacked up immensely compared to the online prices, and not competitive with other sushi places at all. The Sushi is anywhere from 30%-100% more expensive on the menu in store. Also the seating is terrible, don’t go here.

Came in tonight and had a less than stellar experience overall. Super long wait time (which is hard to believe considering the restaurant itself is tiny). Service was lackluster, nothing good about it. Waiting over an hour to get our order while people who came in 20-30 mins after us came in, ate and left. Not sure if they forgot us or not... I can't imagine they did as we were in the front of the restaurant, party of 7, right near the hostess podium. My poor mother who only ordered nigiri (fish/octopus/egg on top of rice, that's it.) got her order last after 1 hr and 10 mins after ordering. Myself, my sister and brother in law had already finished our appetizers and our entire entrees well before my mom got her simple order. How does this happen?? Beats me but my family and I (who have frequented the old location) will not be returning. Please tighten up your service ASAP Sushi Matsuri.
