If you have money to burn and a small appetite, I can wholeheartedly recommend Volcanic Sushi in the Haile Village.
β One (1) piece of eel sushi a la carte: $7.
β Shrimp tempura appetizer: $14.
π Takoyaki (Japanese snack consisting of ball of wheat flour batter cooked in a special pan and typically filled with octopus, pickled ginger, tempura scraps, and green onion): $10
π Half sized takeout soup container of Tom Kha Gai soup: $9
Order was accurate and ready upon my arrival.
Eel sushi was not worth it. A roll, maybe, but not a singleton with a thin, lonely sliver of eel (nickel for scale), regardless of whether fresh rather than frozen.
Shrimp tempura was outrageous, small sized and just like something straight from a convenient Asian market or even supermarket freezer case.
Takoyaki had a few tiny morsels of octopus lurking within and was reasonably good, despite the mere four (4) sub ping pong ball sized pieces.
Highlight was the soup, which struck me as made in house fresh and with pleasant mouth feel and a nice mixture of sweet and savory which meshed well and did not overpower either way.
Other area Asian places have a more reasonable price for portion structure, and while hype is a thing which I totally get, I think the folks who live in the relatively pricey subdivisions surrounding Haile Village are a bit of a captive audience and being served as such.

Overall this place was good but not among my favorite Asian places in Gainesville.
My friend and I ordered the crab Rangoon which was good, but in my opinion could have had more filling. I got the udon noodles with chicken. It was good but it wasnβt my favorite and I felt like there could have been a bigger portion size for the price. My friend got beef and shrimp fried rice which she enjoyed. The waitress gave us a lot of yum yum sauce which was nice.
As for the service, it was pretty good. The restaurant was pretty empty when we went so we got our food quickly and the waiter was attentive and nice.
The atmosphere in there is nice as well, it is clean and decorated. Overall I would say this place is decent and they have a lot of menu options

This is our ALL-TIME favorite sushi spot. Their rolls are out of this world with the freshest ingredients + they make their own sauces (I always ask for some to take home). If you love sushi + yummy food, you wonβt be disappointed. Their staff is always beyond personable + we feel like family.

Our server Ella was so sweet & amazing! She asked if we had been before & what brought us. We were picking up a cake from Sweet Paws for our dogβs first gotcha day & this was our first time in the area. We talked about dogs & she let us know that it was a dog friendly place & told us about the Farmerβs Market which I appreciated. She gave us menu recommendations that didnβt disappoint. The Crab Rangoon was delicious! We also got the lunch combos #2 & #5 - the beef teriyaki & all the sushi rolls were delicious. The outdoor seating area is adorable & it was so nice sitting out there. Even though she was the only server there at the time, she checked on us frequently, made sure we were good & kept our drinks full. Please give her some kind of recognition! We will definitely be back!

We enjoy coming to Volcanic Sushi because they have provided us with good service and tasty food while also allowing us to enjoy the outdoor seating. They have a nice outdoor area, and the staff do a good job bringing appetizers early before your main course, as well as keeping on top of drinks. There are a lot of choices for sushi in the Gainesville area, but Volcanic Sushi does well to make a good name for itself. I recommend this place to others, and we have even enjoyed several dinners here with friends, and I'm sure we'll enjoy more to come!

Update for 10 August 2022, Wednesday
We went here with friends and family. It was a good place to share dinner with family from out of the area. A quiet and nice place for a weekday evening dinner. My only gripe was that the bugs outside were very persistent. But this is not fault of the restaurant, more so the season. Still, the food was delicious, and I most liked the John I sushi roll I had today. It was the tinfoil cooked sushi roll in the picture. Today I'd give the service a rating of 4 star, which is good but not great. But I'm sure it could have been other factors such as low staff. The service was friendly and accommodating, although a few cups ran dry, and the check took a while to come out as we sat outside and the bugs got worse. I would definitely still come back and enjoy more meals here indoor or outdoor. Enjoy!

We recently had a graduation party of TWELVE, and Ella was our server extraordinaire. Seriously, if there were awards for waitstaff, sheβd have an EGOT by now. First she started with allergens which is so great for a server to ask at start, especially as we did have a nut allergy. From the moment we sat down, Ella managed our chaos like a total pro. Drinks? Never empty. Food? Perfectly timed. Special requests? Handled like a magician.
She even remembered who ordered what without batting an eye. (How?? We're still debating if she's part wizard.) Ella went above and beyond in every wayβshe kept us laughing, made sure the graduate felt extra special, and somehow never let our sheer numbers overwhelm her.
If this place ever loses Ella, itβll be like losing the heart and soul of the operation. Management: protect Ella at all costs. Pay her in gold, hugs, or whatever she demands. To everyone else: if youβre lucky enough to get Ella as your server, buckle up for an amazing dining experience!!!
I don't have photos of our food cause I was so excited to eat. Highly recommend the Mark 2 roll and the Newell Fox.

LIZ IS AWESOME!!
I often find myself near Volcano Sushi, just as I need some time to clear my head. I swing in, grab a bottle of saki, and just exist. Without fail, the staff are phenomenal. The customer service is on point. I truly feel welcomed. Sometimes I'm not open to conversation and they perfectly respect that. Then along comes Liz. Not only did she remember me, and what I wanted to order, but she asked how I was doing, compared to the last time I was in(I was overwhelmed and anxious). An extremely sweet moment from a stranger on a bad day. It means the absolute world to me. Y'all good people, thank you so much.

The sushi was really good but the service was bad and the place could use a deep clean. The sweet tea we ordered was old to the point of being impossible to drink. The table was sticky and had straw wrappers from previous patrons. The paper book menus had food all over them. The staff hung out at the bar and were not attentive at all. For the price, Iβd expect better.

A great recommendation from our daughter-in-law while visiting from out of town. Service was outstanding! Delicious food (hubby had sushi and I had the bang bang shrimp bowl). It's in a very neat area and we just missed the Farmer's Market that was going on outside. While we ate inside, the outside patio looked very inviting. Great place and we will stop here again!

Super friendly staff. I had a lot of great fun talking with the staff. The food is awesome. If you like Sushi, you need to go here and try it. I have asked the Chefs to just make me something and they have never disappointed. My wife and I eat here about once a week.
I enjoy that the staff recognizes you and is super friendly! It's a small cozy place tucked into Haile Village. You need to try the Volcano or Dragon Rolls! The soups are true to the style.

Bad quality farmed Salmon. Very conservative potions. Forgot multiple elements of our large to go order. Upon return to location they almost forgot another item which was insult to injury. The to go boxes and receipt were smeared in wasabi as if it was hastily slapped together. Cute place and nice location, everything else is zero stars. Tipped 20% for nothing, the staff possess absolutely no accountability or pride in their job.

Itβs Friday night after a long week, my wife orders sushi and I go pick it up for her. I walk in, give her name and they hand me a bag and say itβs been paid for.
I leave, drive all the way home and walk in to my wife who just got called by Volcanic Sushi saying they gave me the wrong order and I need to come back and pay.
This was her special meal after a long day or I wouldβve refused to drive back, but I did.
So another 20 minutes there and back, I arrive and am told I have to pay. I ask if theyβre going to do anything for my inconvenience.
No.
I ask for a manager. The server goes back and returns saying she said they wonβt do anything and I have to pay.
She wonβt even come out to see me when I asked for her.
I gave the young man (who did a great job owning up for his error) a message for the manager that they just lost a customer and will get a negative review over $20 of sushi.
Thatβs not how you treat people for YOUR mistakes. Rock N Roll Sushi and Fuji Sushi are fantastic local places slightly further away we will be doing business with from now on.

I really like their chicken thai curry, however, they really SKIMP on the chicken. Thereβs literally less chicken in this meal than in a chik fil A 8 count nugget meal. They add a lot of vegetables to make it seem full. Itβs disappointing, I feel like I got tricked.

Came here for a laid back dinner with a friend. Had a really good experience! The restaurant is pretty small with a relaxed atmosphere. We split the house favorite roll platter and chose the salad to go with. Basic salad and liked the ginger dressing! We subbed out one of the sushi rolls on the platter which was no issue. Our server told us that his favorite was the John I (comes with that special) which we kept and are glad we did. My favorite for the night was the Barbara roll due to the unique flavor with the smoked salmon. My friends' favorite was the Mark II which had several different types of fish and avocado on top. We will definitely be back to try some of the appetizers as well as some of the other rolls!

The food was really good and came out faster than expected. However our server was a bit rude. She never told us her name but she just seemed annoyed when we asked if we can take cream cheese out of the sushi. I donβt know if she just had a bad experience with younger customers but I hope she can learn to be more patient with us especially when it is our first time there. I also overheard her talking with her coworker complaining about a customer and what they said which I thought was a little bit inappropriate and I think her coworker knew too as she shushed her. It just felt a little weird seeing her actually smile and answer questions at other tables. Maybe they were regulars who tipped well? We still tipped her well (contrary to how she treated us) and thanked her for serving us as we understand that everyone can have a bad day. The food was really good but the customer service could be a little bit better.
P.S Not all of the servers were bad just the one we got I guess. One of the servers who greeted us at the door was super nice and welcoming and hopefully we can get her as our server next time.

Pros: nice location, decently priced lunch specials, miso soup serving was generous and tasty
Cons: the rice was dry and they used too much on the sushi and nigiri. The fish was sliced much too thickly on the nigiri making it overly chewy and paired with the dried rice made for a bad experience. Even the California roll, which is usually the most basic was not good

Update 2023 - this place has gone down hill. Like most places, staff this day under 30 yo has zero understanding of customer service and when we do get a good server, then the food is not par for this place.
Typically good portion for quality and great texture, tastes and combinations. The last time though, I had tail meat for my salmon portion, through out my entire roll and a few pieces on my second. Not typical for them at all.

Prices go up I get that! But if that is the case maintain the quality and flavor. I have been here countless times, spend over 100 every time, but the amount I get for that 100 has gone down by half, the quality half , the look and presentation half! Donβt give us half when we have to pay double this is a review for last week as well. This will be last time I ever spend money here again. Iβm going to make sure each person I have ever taken there is aware and to beware. Only reason I gave 2 stars is because it was good! Now a complete waste of time and money.

I used to go hear a lot but lately the service and food quality is going down. Long waits and the quality of food is hit and miss depends on who is back there.
I made a reservations and supposed to have two guests with me, I call one hour 50 minutes earlier and ask to make sure to have a table , otherwise I make other arrange. I specifically mentioned it doesn't matter where it is as long as it is inside since it is going to be 41 degrees that night. The host, which I guess it was Zach, not 100% sure of his name, guaranteed that I am taken care of this and no worries.
Driving to the restaurant 5 minutes before the time, while I was parking the same person calls me and tells me there is no space available, and he doesn't think a restaurant should be run this way, but there is nothing he can do and it is out of his hand!
He said there is a table available outside and if you want you can have it.
I told him, I am here and coming inside, please get me the manager. Manager came and said making a reservation at 6 PM, it is not a reservation and there is nothing she can do. In addition she mentioned that I have not confirmed my reservation! Which none of that doesn't make sense, if I called and made a reservation what do I need to confirm?
I managed to find food somewhere else that night, but I can't count on this place anymore specially when their own staff believe "a restaurant shouldn't be run like this"
Looking at answer to other reviewers, I realized in none of those, management really did truly apologize, but made all kind of excuses to prove they did nothing wrong and this is the customers that has been unreasonable. So, I don't except any results from my feedback either.
I leave the judgment on that to you.

I used to love Volcanic until I found out about their ownership. The owner and management here is extremely unorganized. They can't keep servers or kitchen staff to save their lives. Nestor, the owner, either fires them with no reason or bullies his staff into quitting. I am very close with one of the servers who used to work there and recently she got fired for getting into a disagreement with Nestor, which he then told her to get a drug test, she happily did, but they still decided to fire her before her results even came back. Nonetheless fired her over text message. Extremely unprofessional. I personally will not eat here again and support this type of ownership.

First visit tonight for Thursday evening dinner with my husband. Greeted then seated almost immediately.
Dylan was our really friendly chill waiter. Excellent customer service 11/10 π
We ordered green tea, Sho Chiku Bai sake, miso soup, tuna tataki, Volcanic beef with brown rice, and Mori B.
Soup was great, especially on a cool night (58 degrees) and we preferred outdoor seating.
Tea was OK. The sake paired perfectly with my tataki and sashimi. My husband liked the tenderness of the Volcanic Beef and had additional ginger teriyaki sauce on the side. I was very happy that all my fish and veggies were fresh. Rice was made just right.
We made a good choice on tonight's Japanese restaurant.
Highly recommend this place especially for Gainesville sushi/sashimi lovers. Levels better with umami / authentic Japanese flavors than Ichiban Sushi and better customer service than the more popular Dragonfly.
We would return here again for date night.
Overall cost was $120 including 20% tip.
Thanks for an excellent first experience π₯

The girlfriend took me to this place. I would have never found it on my own. It's tucked away off the beaten trail. Nice small and quaint. The sushi was fantastic. Our server was extremely nice and attentive. It wasn't a big deal but the only piece of advice I would have is to keep the employees quiet about their complaints. We could overhear other servers (not ours) complaining about customers wanting to sit outside or some other bit.

I had hopes for this place. Drove from Palatka to try since I had heard good things. Place was clean. Our server didn't tell us his name but I feel it was Zach? Gave me my drink and didn't return to the table to ask the my guest what she wanted to drink. It wasn't busy. Then we had to go find him
To ask him to come take our order . My meal came with a salad that didn't come until the entrees came. Had to remind him I had a salad. He wasn't very attentive with the drinks ran out multiple times. The sushi came out warm from is sitting so long. It was supposed to have a drizzle of spicy mayo and it was covered. Had our service been better I wouldn't be complaining about the food. I very rarely give out zero dollars for a tip. But I did here. Didn't ask us how we liked anything, nothing. Maybee he's having an off day, but nothing that happened was reasonable. Customer Service is a thing. I could've been happy with the Mediocre food if the service was better.

I have eaten here several times when my in-laws have taken my wife and I to this place over the last couple of years and I can honestly say that I have NEVER had an enjoyable meal here. I can give this place 1 star because of the nice outdoor seating but beyond that the food is straight-up lousy. The only reason that this place remains in business is because they have absolutely zero competition from other Asian restaurants (because there are none in Haile Plantation). Zero competition means they can serve whatever deep-fried cat cr@p or sauteed mush they want. Also, it's important to never rely on reviews from typical Americans who have no idea what good ethnic cuisine tastes like (and that's most of Gainesville). The sushi is subpar at best. You'd honestly be better off just getting some at Publix. The side dishes are even worse. I made the mistake of ordering the "ramen" which had the most diluted and flavorless broth I've ever had the misfortune of trying. I wish I could refer you to a better Asian eatery but sadly there really aren't any good options in Gainesville. Your best bet is to go to an Asian grocery store, buying the ingredients yourself and teaching yourself to cook your favorite dishes at home.

I ate here with my family yesterday evening and it was delicious. It was a UF game day and our server Zach let us know in advance sushi might be a bit slower than usual. We were there to relax and enjoy the outdoor seating with our dog, so a few extra minutes on one of our orders was no problem. We were impressed by how hard everyone was working to keep things running smoothly! Another server Yanna stopped by to say hi! Overall a very friendly and relaxing place to eat amazingly tasty Japanese food.

If I could give 0 stars I would. I have been here plenty of times and have had great service. However, the server Zachary B is the worst. After waiting 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge are table we tell him our order including sauces on the side. 15 minutes later we get our appetizer we ordered and still no drinks. Finally the drinks come and our food shortly after. One of the rolls had spicy mayo drenched over the entire thing. When asked to remake it he said βthat will take 30-40 minutesβ. I asked for my sauce for the haile roll and was told it will take a while I have other tables. At this point I didnβt care about the food I wanted to leave the service was absolutely the worst. While waiting in line to speak to the manager I was told by the waiter if I leave theyβll call the cops for theft of services. Even though Iβm standing in a line. I have never in my life dealt with such disrespect. I will never return to this restaurant.

Some of the rudest customer service I have ever experienced. The waitress was extremely rude in every aspect of her demeanor, even from the start. She was extremely condescending to me and my friends in her tone. We brushed past this and then they took more than 1 hour to get our food out. During this time, we saw people who came after us getting their food before us. When I complained about the wait time, they told me they were backed up (even though barely anyone was there) and that sushi was prioritized over regular entrees. I asked for a discount for wasting so much of our time with mediocre dishes, and they very harshly denied me. The manager said the waitress was "nice enough" to take the lunch upcharge off our tab, which did not happen. I was so sick of their deceptiveness and laziness that we simply left. This is a joke of a restaurant and there needs to be a serious evaluation made to the absolutely horrible staff. If someone could please reach out about this, that would be appreciated.
Edit: I should have expected this reply based on the others you gave people π. I got charged an extra $3 for my dish by the way. But at this point, I'm only angry about the rudeness. I work as a hotel receptionist, so I know it is difficult to deal with complaints sometimes, but please do not be rude to guests. I really did try to listen and I let it go and that could have been it. There was no need to re-explain rudely and lie to me. Do better. Thank you, that is all.

Good food great service. However they have not updated the tables and the chairs or the outside in ages. They really need to upscale it to match their quality of food there.

Absolutely love their sushi and the variety of food. It's the best we have ever had. Plus, we think that they are very reasonably priced. The wait staff is great especially Dalton.

If you order from a place with SUSHI in the name, you should order the SUSHI. Love this place, love the sushi. Got the tonkotsu ramen tonight, and they nuke the pork. Not a problem except I only know this now because there were pieces of plastic wrap left in the meat lol! I highly recommend this place, just don't be dumb. Get a roll, you're gonna love it

This is one of my most favorite sushi restaurants in Gainesville, but for some odd reason this location is not as good as the Millhopper location in food quality and taste. I can order the same exact meal from both locations and the haile location will taste different every time (and not in a good way).

Enjoy!

The server was very friendly and the food was really good. The raw bowl was great as was the duck curry. They also carry the larger bottle of Sapporo which was a super pleasant surprise. Will definitely be back!

I have had sushi from here and Boba tea and it was not a good experience. The Boba tea was so bad I couldn't even drink it.

One of my favorite sushi places with a variety of non-sushi options. Caroline bites are our favorite appetizer, give them a shot! They also have an outdoor (covered) eating area. We eat here fairly often since they moved to their new location. Every time we've gone to eat in the patio area we've had a wonderful experience and we recommend it to the everyone!

My favorite sushi place in Gainesville! You canβt beat the incredibly fresh and flavorful sushi and quality customer service that is Volcanic! Some family favorites include the Crab Rangoon, gyoza, spring rolls, the Alexander Roll, and my personal favorite: The Stobbie Roll. It has shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, and is wrapped in lettuce with pink sushi rice paper and topped off with a drizzle of spicy mayo & a sprinkle of scallions. So light and fresh. Volcanic sushi never disappoints. Give it a try if you havenβt already! π£

This rating is for the service at the Haile Plantation location. We sat outside under the covered patio. The sushi was great, however it took forever to get our sushi(two of us dining) & majority of the time our waiter was nowhere to be seen. Had to ask a few different waiters several times for drinks to be refilled. When we got there, one group was leaving & their table still hadn't been cleared off by the time we left almost 1.5 hours later. If you want good service & sushi, go to the Hunters Crossing location. The Hunters Crossing location may be a smaller restaurant but the service is excellent as well as the sushi.

Hello, I am posting through my other email since people cannot respond through reviews. I posted through my account under the name Silverglow. In the response, the owner assumed I was a "driver from bite squad." Okay, I didn't know the person worked for bite squad? I thought they worked for door dash since that's what I use to order out?? I wanted to correct this. I am literally a 19 year old customer who was there with my family. I don't even have my license yet!! π How could I work for delivery? Why would I need to work while in college when my parents said I don't have to since they have really good jobs? My mom is a doctor and my dad a lawyer. I did not need to know all the details of said "incident," I didn't even know everything that happened. Total TMI. I only overheard some of the conversation and did not like it. My dad encouraged me to write a review since he didn't hear what I did, and I'm old enough. I handed my phone to him to read the response I got and he told me to correct the mistake. Please do not assume someone's identity just because they post a review of an event they simply overheard. I just wanted to make it known so that people should know that this isn't the right way to act towards someone, whether it's a customer or worker.

There was an employee who takes orders there and I've visited twice so far. She doesn't wear her name tag (everyone else had theirs on) which is utterly unprofessional and awkward, and I saw her being absolutely rude to someone who seemed to be picking up an order. She was rude when the person was simply asking small questions about food. She mentioned a job so I assume she was talking to someone who was doing deliveries. She said the person could quit the job they have and come work at this restaurant because she can hire them, which is honestly a bad insult. She was absolutely unprofessional and rude. Immature. If her manager was there, honestly she probably would've been fired. She went as far as to tell the person to go back there and help them cook if she wants them to go faster, and accused them of disliking the job they're having to do. I will never visit this restaurant again, and I will personally file a report if I have to. This woman does not deserve to work there if she's going to treat the people she serves so harshly and rudely. That's the opposite of customer service, it's jail treatment.

Pretty solid. The sashimi was okay but they kind of messed up making my nigiri. Along with he sushi being relatively solid, the ramen was also. Overall solid place, but def not the best.

Ordered take out. The food was cold and the portions were small. The spicy tuna roll was the worst sushi I have ever had in my life. The tuna was rock hard and made my stomach hurt. I would not recommend.

I was given the wrong order and had to make an additional trip to return it. The hostess tossed my correct order at me then walked away. I still didn't get what I paid for but left anyway because it wasn't worth the hassle. Definitely will not be giving them my business again.

If you know me, you know I adore Volcanic Sushi and Sake. However, my boyfriend and I have always gone to the other location. But we decided to take a stab at this one. The location is in the cutest plaza and has a great ambiance with indoor and outdoor seating. We both opted for the lunch combos, a GREAT bang for your buck. I got the combo #5, which was 13 or so dollars for 3 rolls, 6 pieces each (pictured). A normal roll will be costing around the same amount depending on your choice, so the lunch combos, while limited roll options, are the way to go. We got our green tea cheesecake to go this time. Highly recommend!

We ordered off GrubHub for pick up and were told it would be a 15-20 minute wait by the app. When we arrived to pick up our food the woman at the register was very kind and apologetic and said that it was supposed to be a 40 minute wait time. I don't even remember how long we actually ended up waiting because the woman was just so amazing at her job that it didn't even matter. She checked on us multiple times and really made us feel like she cared that we had to wait. We ordered 6 sushi rolls and a bunch of appetizers. The food was amazing, but the service was top notch.

Awful service. Rip off price.
Drove all the way from downtown Gainesville to try a new place. Absolutely awful service. Itβs like they were trying to save money by cutting all the sushi SUPER thin but charging premium prices. The salmon nigiri was paper thin. My partner got massago nigiri and they filled the seaweed cup less than half way. We were even planning to ordered more food if the server would have just came to check on us one time but that didnβt happen. Waited another 10 minutes trying to flag down our server for the check. Definitely not coming back here.
