Zen Sushi + Robata Grill

This is a hidden gem in the Lazy Dog Plaza off of Glades Road.
They serve incredibly fresh sashimi and sushi, hubby loves their chicken pad Thai, and I’m always trying something new.
Prices are very reasonable and they have super good happy hour specials.
Highly recommend if you are a Sushi fiend like me.

We love Zen! We’re regulars, and the staff always makes us feel like family. The food is incredible (the lobster bomb roll is to die for), but it’s the friendly and attentive staff that keeps us coming back. Recommendations for food include the lobster bomb, of course, dumplings, tuna pizza, and the tuna tower with salmon skin. But regardless of what you order, you won’t be disappointed!

Title: Fantastic Sushi Experience at Zen Sushi!

Review: I had a wonderful dining experience at Zen Sushi! The service was top-notch; the waiter was exceptionally helpful, recommending the Diamyo Roll and Red Dragon Roll. Both selections were absolutely delicious, offering a perfect blend of flavors that left me thoroughly impressed. I also tried the Miso Soup; while tasty, it was a bit too watered down for my preference and could have used a bit more salt. Nonetheless, the overall experience was delightful, and the quality of the sushi rolls more than made up for the soup. I'm genuinely happy with my visit and look forward to returning to Zen Sushi soon!

Decided to do the omakase on the recommendation of my friend, and I was not disappointed. Chef was very polite, respectful and professional. Food was authentic and beautifully prepared. Taste of the food was delightful and our whole party was extremely full and merry by end of our dining experience.

If you want to have authentic Japanese sushi experience, this experience has to be tried at least once.

I am very particular, so difficult to please when it comes to sushi. Keep that in mind. The rolls had flavor, but the seaweed was chewy, which tells me it was not dry when made, too moist, or not prepared right. The salmon, shrimp, and tuna was flavorful, but the rice at times was chewy, so again, not fresh or not prepared right. I was given five or six small slices of pickled ginger. Really? Pile it on, man! The service was top notch, but the fly whizzing by me was a minor annoyance. The music and decor however, was great. I won’t be going back though. The quest continues.

So disappointed…we had been going to Zen Sushi for about a year now. Always a good experience. This week, we went and I ordered the Orange Roll with a simple glass of ice water. The water had the most VILE taste ever. Almost a joke! I asked, and they said it comes from their soda machine. Which makes me wonder how clean their machine actually is…it was disgustinh. Then, my roll had crunchy, chewy and cold rice which was evident that the sushi was not freshly made. Clearly it was refrigerated, or the rice wasn’t fresh, or one or both. Also, the service is just “ok”. The servers just don’t seem happy to be there and it shows. Bad food, dirty water, and just “ok” service = finding another go-to sushi restaurant. What a bummer!

Stale products! Rude staff! There was glass in the food, I cut myself on a sharp piece and the waiters didn't apologize! Smoking is allowed outside and all the smoke goes into the restaurant.

The place looks brand new and has very friendly staff. It was empty when we went so I couldn't really speak to the normal speed of service. The food was not what we were hoping for. It was not bad, but compared to other local sushi spots, it's not as good. We ordered a hot dish as well, and the flavor was also a miss. Beautiful location, but we won't return.

Not bad, but not amazing. Your definitely paying for it being in the trendy "uptown boca". Have had better sushi with more flavor at hole in the wall places. Overpriced to sit in a big sterile boring room crowded with tables with no atmosphere.

Worse sushi I have ever had. They should be ashamed of themselves. No wonder it wasn’t busy. Had a Dragon Roll and couldn’t find the shrimp. Complained to server and he could barely see a sliver of one and apologized but couldn’t do anything.

This was our first time here. My inkling that something was off, was there were only three other customers there during lunch time. I ordered the pad Thai chicken lunch meal. When it arrived, I could not stand the dirty diaper smell. Esthetically, it looked disgusting but the smell was unbearable. The chicken was hardly cooked and still pink inside. No thanks, I did not feel like throwing up! The waiter was unbothered and moved like a snail. We could not wait to get out of there and never return!

One of the best Japanese sushi places here in South Florida. I won’t miss good sushi now that I know where to go.
If you are looking for “authentic”, “genuine” high quality fresh sushi and sashimi (and many more), this is the place you must go. These photos won’t justify enough, you gotta be there and experience yourself :)

1) FOOD QUALITY: I tried special Chirashi. sashimi is so fresh and some of them indeed come straight from Japan! I never thought I would be able to have fresh sashimi from Japan in south Florida! (I haven’t tried others yet but I saw many people orders and restaurant is crowded!)

2) CHEF and STAFF are FRIENDY AND PROFESSIONAL: I was sitting at the counter this time, and I enjoyed seeing how the chef prepared our food. He placed the Chirashi bowl on the counter but told us to “hold on” (not yet) with smile … I could almost feel he was designing chirashi artwork on this bowl, and you see, this chirashi was beautifully done!! Just so detail, delicate and perfection, so first, you enjoy this art visually, and then taste this amazing mouth melting fish! Mmmm I appreciate ocean! lol (I mean it)

3) LOVELY AMBIANCE : I also love this restaurant set up! Its indoor restaurant yet it also gives ambiance of open environment, as if you are at some beachside bar. Very lovely atmosphere. There are plenty of seats outside as well.

We used to love coming to this place for sushi but unfortunately the service has declined came here today and waited 15 min for a waiter that never came by to at least get our drink order we just got up and left there are better sushi places with much better service.

I was rushing in from the airport, arrived eleven minutes before closing and was told I couldn’t place an order because the kitchen had already shut down. The server was pretty dismissive. In my opinion, if you state your hours of operation, why not actually operate in that timeframe? Or lock the doors if you close early. Not sure if I’ll go back or just try one of the many other sushi places in west Boca with higher ratings.

The location is good, the food is ok, the price is good. I went there around 4pm. They took some time for anyone to come and say we could sit anywhere, then another time to come and bring the menu, another time to ask about water….. The place wasn’t busy. So I was a first timer, and l ordered takeout. I got beef tataki and volcano roll. The order was ready when I got there, the hostess completed the order. When looking at my order I realized that it was missing the ponzu sause that was supposed to come with the B.T so I turned around and went back asked the hostess for the sause and she told me I had to request it it does not come with it. Now obviously, I found that odd, considering it litterly is the only sause that comes with it and says it on the menu, so I did mention that, and she said oh. But just having to go back and being told that kinda proved she didn't really know the menu or what goes with what. Ok, honest mistake, hopefully that won't happen again . The beef was cut a little thick for my liking was good, but it's usually much thinner. This was like slabs of raw steak cut way too thick . They could have 3 or 4 thin slices in each one piece easily thats how thick it was .the volcano was pretty good and had a strange, almost grill flavor to it. It was pretty good. Also, presentation was OK, nothing special. I'm not sure I would spend 40 on lunch again anytime soon. The atmosphere was really nice, but I'm on the fence if it was worth it. But I'm sure depending on what you get would be great might not do takeout just to save time in having to return if something was missing.

Very disappointed with the food. Have never had Japanese so bad. The shrimp tempura roll was bland. The Miami roll with snapper, the snapper was bland and not fresh, the only flavor was fishiness. The spicy mayo tasted off as well. Also ordered the steak teriyaki- the steak was grey rare, had a slight sour taste and the Teriyaki was on the side. $65 down the drain.

For sushi, I’m sorry but they get 1 star. My wife and I have been 3 times and you’ll honestly get better sushi at Publix. For Thai dishes, they get 4 stars. It’s such a shame regarding the sushi because they pay probably the most expensive rent for a sushi restaurant in all of Boca, you’d think they’d be first class on the sushi game. But not even close to other options in town. Yakitori in East Boca has the absolute best sushi.

Do not kill the ducks for no reason!!! The poor bird does not deserve such a bad cooking. My shoe leather probably more chewable and tastier. worst Thai experience I had for a while. Feel really bad for the duck.

I ordered from this restaurant on Uber Eats. I got the fried pork dumplings (gyoza), house green salad and the pad thai with pork. It was DELICIOUS!!! Everything was fresh, sustainably (and beautifully) packaged. This was some of the best Thai food I've ever had!! I looooooove pad thai and this was some of the best. A curated omakase experience for $95 with Chef Yozo was the best way to spend a Saturday evening! Chef was very observant and made sure to pace out the courses, which we were very appreciative of. The service from Mae (May?) was also excellent. Will definitely return again!

It was a terrible experience from the start and we will never go back.
We got our table but didn't get our menus for 15 minutes. Waiters were passing us by back and forth still no menus. We got our menus and after a long wait we ordered.

This is not the worst! We ordered the calamari appetizer, there were 8 skimpy rings, not that we wanted a bucket but really! and maybe the equivalent of one tablespoon of the dipping sauce, What a rip off.
My husband ordered the volcano shrimp dish... Totally tasteless and the shrimps were very chewy.
His order came 15 minutes before mine if not more. I ordered the Usuzukuri and was almost going to send it back because by then my husband was almost done with his and I didn't want his dinner to get cold. Now that I think about it we should have sent his back until mine would be ready to come.

Now my plate was extremely skimpy.
Usuzukuri are very thin slices of sashimi, however if you lump it all together I was served the equivalent of 4 pcs of sashimi! It's overpriced, the service is terrible, and the food not that great. So NO, we would not go back. A wasted Saturday night dinner and waste of money.

I was having a particularly bad week, and I stopped in alone to relax and eat my feelings. The sushi bar was reserved for a group, so I sat at the regular bar. Chatted with several bartenders who were friendly, witty, and attentive. They gave great suggestions. The food was fantastic! I had something called "NYC Sashimi Platter" which was a beautiful boat for one. All the fish tasted fresh and delicious. For dessert, I had a Korean Donut with a side of vanilla ice cream (as suggested by one of the guys) and it blew my mind! Maybe it was the laid back elegance of the place, maybe the food or service, or a combo of that with the bottle of sake I drank? But, I felt much better after my meal there. So much so, I left a 100% tip. Really great place to eat!

We have now eaten here 2x. We live just down the street, so it is also very convenient. I love the outside seating. It’s very simple yet elegant at the same time. Their prices are decent, especially at lunch. They have a huge menu with lots to choose from Thai wise and Japanese.
The sushi is fantastic and they are happy to accommodate a child whose eating sushi like smaller cuts and leaving out things like “Masago”.
My oldest is very picky and they Always accommodate her!
For these facts alone I adore it here. Not to mention the sweet waitress we had who had a lot going on but still managed to get all of our food requests and extra items.
I had the Spicy Tuna Roll, Tom Kha Veggie Soup and ginger salad, my daughter had the Cali Roll and my oldest had some noodles.

Great Happy Hour from 3-6! Stumbled upon this little gem when I was going to another restaurant in the shopping center. This is a nice addition to Uptown Boca.

Nice bar area with indoor and outdoor seating. 1/2 price drinks during Happy Hour and discount appetizers. Shrimp Shu Mai is one of the best in the area. These dumplings are amazing. Sushi was good and very fresh. The bartender, I think his name is Brian, is excellent. Friendly and helpful.

Finally, a sushi restaurant in Boca where the chef is Japanese! I lived in Japan for several years and have extremely high standards when it comes to sushi. Chef Yozo-san knows how to make his guests feel special and appreciated. Every time we dine at Zen Sushi we have a wonderful experience. The sushi is always fresh and delicious and the service is excellent!

We just left the place went there for the first time, set at the bar Sunday around 5 pm, place was pretty empty, still we had to ask for a menu and a drink after we set there for awhile… ordered a sushi roll that
as appetizers and waited for 40 minutes when asked what happened the server said” oh sorry someone stole your roll” and said it would be some time before they can serve it… also no mention about the main dinners we ordered after the appetizers

Why a server deliberately sabotage our dinner experience? I have many theories but I rather to tell the story

We were a party of 7, with high hopes to have a great time after work but our server Emilia, was rude, unkind, impolite. She repeatedly ignored us, not even for a second did we have a great experience in the restaurant, due to the fact that she repeatedly made distasteful faces, Forgot our orders and even worse, forgot about us.

Anyways this is a high class restaurant with a good reputation, and a profitable menu, however those things aren’t enough to ensure diners keep coming back. This was one and done for me.

Food was really good but like many restaurants they were under staffed. We will be back on off hours until the labor markets become more favorable. The food is very fresh and of high quality. Prices were very fair for a Boca location. See you again soon!

The happy hour was really nice and the best thing to go there for... as I found my soup and my entree to be overpriced and under quantity, but I will be back again for happy hour and the bartender and ambience.

I highly recommend ZEN SUSHI and Robata Grill. We have gone numerous times since they opened in June and love introducing this great restaurant to friends… They offer a large menu of great fresh sushi options along with Japanese and Thai cuisine and we find everything to always be fresh and tasty… There is something for everyone’s palate and the staff is pleasant and efficient…along with a full bar with a great indoor outdoor setting.
We love the fact that is a great large outdoor covered eating area as well.

I highly recommend ZEN SUSHI, authentic Japanese Sushi restaurant complimented with Thai dishes, in Uptown Boca.
We can count on freshness and high quality fish any day of the week. Sushi counter is the biggest I've ever seen, and the service is great. Omakase (chef's choice) sushi served at sushi counter by Yozo, owner and sushi chef, is delicious and beautiful; also an interaction with Yozo at the sushi counter is an experience in itself. It is fun and the kind of Sushi Dining Art and culture that we enjoy in Japan. We also love Alex, the Thai Sushi chef, who always delights us with our favorites. Zen Sushi is my new go-to favorite restaurant in Boca Raton.

Excellent, excellent. A fine dining experience. I'm partially to anything salmon. I really liked the dainty presentation. Everyone was so nice and so the ambiance was a pleasure. A lot of sweet and kind people here. I give it a high recommendation.

Brand new in Uptown Boca Raton shopping center that mainly features restaurants and a new Amazon grocery store.

Very large modern setting featuring Japanese, Thai and sushi items, Huge menu and large outdoor area.

My wife ordered two appetizers, Shrimp Eggplant, eggplant stuffed with shrimp and Vegetable Tempura Appetizer, assorted vegetables tempura .

I opted for the Sashimi Tokyo –Authentic Japanese style of sashimi with conch & octopus and choice of Miso Soup or Green Salad ,iceberg lettuce, cucumbers, carrots with ginger dressing. truly a beautiful display that came on a wooden boat.

Definitely returning.

Our first time here and it surely exceeded our expectations. The outdoor bar seating area had a nice vibe and ambience especially on cooler evenings. We also had the best service from the bartender on duty; wish I could have remembered his name.
Had to say the dumpling was amazing. Everything else we ordered was also tasty.
As an Asian, I would truly recommend giving this place a try!!

Really enjoyed the food. Specially loved the dim sum menu choices. They also have a full liquor bar with with Happy Hour on drinks and appetizers. Definitely check them out ,a great addition to the Uptown Boca Plaza.

This place was terrible. The food had no taste. The staff was nice but that is about it. This place won't last. I give it a few more months. I saw a couple walk out after not getting service. I also noticed several dishes being returned to the kitchen. Take my word that this is not a good place. You've been warned. So many great sushi places. Don't waste your time or money. Also, many empty tables for a Saturday evening in Boca Raton. Big disappointment

They need a new hostess. We couldn't sit @ the empty sushi bar because the spots were supposedly reserved. So we sat @ the bar counter outside..not the best service that we have recieved @ this restaurant. We got some happy hour shrimp dumplings, egg rolls & a couple beers. We left after that to go get crab legs.. This used to be our sushi date day spot. The service is amazing if your able to sit @ the sushi bar when the invisible people havent reserved their seats & experience the excellent service of Alex & Rich. I hope that yall get there after the invisible people that reserved the entire bar have left so you can sit @ the sushi bar & enjoy the service of Alex & Rich.

Amazing sushi and sashimi. Great atmosphere and very friendly service. We had a sushi boat and it was packed with the most delicious and rare sushi from Japan. Went back and it got even better. Ramen with pork belly. Japanese Snapper and Blue fin tuna. 10/10.

My family and I love this place. The owner and head chef Yoso often has hard to find top quality Japanese specialty items like Snaz, mountain yam, Japanese Yellowtail... The chef special dinner is an experience to have.

It’s an ok sushi spot with a sizable menu of additional Japanese dishes and Thai food as well. Sushi tasted pretty fresh though some cuts were a lot more jagged than others. The shumai dumplings were the highlight of the meal. The rest of the hot dishes were ok but could have used a lot more flavor. Service was friendly, they were very busy.

New gem in town. Best sushi spot I've found in Boca since going to Rise Sushi for the past 15 years. Fresh fish, huge menu, nice bartender. They also have a Robato grill which is rare down here. More like Japanese BBQ than hibachi style. I say go enjoy this place when you get the chance

Great place, great food. Love to sit at the bar. But to hot as they keep the windows open during the hottest months. Would recommend to wait till it cools down before allowing all the heat in.

We just ate here the whole family and we enjoyed our food very much. They are still new and didn't mark vegan options on their menu but they are extremely accommodating to vegans. We asked the waitress and she helped us choose vegan dim sums, also on the tofu and vegetable menu most things can be altered to vegan easily. Overall I'm glad to find another restaurant with good vegan options.

Wife and I sat at the open-window bar which had a nice cool breeze coming through. We shared pork dumplings, tuna tataki, and two rolls. It all tasted super fresh and delicious. We also had some apple saki which was also really awesome. The only thing better than the food was the service at the bar. He was a great conversationalist, very respectful, and kept a clean and tidy bar. We will definitely be back.

Lazy Dog was packed, the wait was too long, and there were people lined out of the door. We were going to check out Olive U but as fate would have it, we ended up here.

It's nice that it's on the far end of the plaza, it was less busy and there was a lot more parking. There was no wait, but they were mostly full.

First of all, this isn't a restaurant for your friend who feels lukewarm about sushi. This is a sushi restaurant through and through.

The service isn't friendly and it's slow. We waited for so long to get our order taken. I will say that when they did take our order, it went directly to the kitchen and our toddler's order came out a few minutes later.

The food was great! It came out perfectly warm and the portions were fantastic. The chicken dumplings were all right, not great, not bad. The sesame chicken was great, and you get a lot of food. The general tsos chicken was adequately spicy. The chicken katsu's portion is HUGE.

On the note of the chicken katsu, that's exactly why I am rating this place one star. The chicken katsu is served on a piece of paper, that's right, a piece of paper! My husband realized halfway through his meal that there was paper on the bottom and that it was ripping and in his food.

My husband NEVER complains at restaurants, EVER! I'm 10x more likely to complain than he is. He told our server and that's how we found out that the paper was intentional. She spoke to him for a good few minutes before offering him a replacement without the paper. It was absolutely ridiculous, to be honest. We 100% gave food to our toddler from his fork and it was completely imperceptible because of the sauce and the size of the chicken, etc.

It was nice, we'll be eating our leftovers but it's not a place I'd crave and it's not high on my list of places to eat at.

First off, my wife and I sat at the sushi bar. In doing so, we were each given 3 pieces of their tuna tataki for FREE. Apparently, it is an ongoing thing when you sit at the sushi bar. Not sure if this will always be the case. Regardless, it was a nice surprise not to mention that the tuna tataki was really delicious tasting. I ended up ordering the daimyo roll, as I had ordered this roll last time I visited this place and it was very fresh tasting. However, this time around, it wasn't as good. The avocado in the roll had spots in it, which meant it was starting to spoil. The sushi inside also did not taste as fresh as last time. On a more positive note, it happened to be happy hour, so my wife and I both ended up ordering a glass of their house red wine, which was only $5. Hard to beat that happy hour price anywhere around this area. Lastly, something else I really appreciated about this place is the natural light due to all the windows in the restaurant. I really don't like dark and dingy restaurants. I hope the freshness issue I had during this visit is a one time issue, as I really do like the place overall but when it comes to sushi, it always needs to be very fresh. If you have not been here yet, do give it a try.

Went on a Saturday night, the service was really bad. They missed multiple items from our order. The hostess was doing it all, from arranging tables, cleaning, etc. The waitress didn’t check on our table.

I would give this 6 stars if I could. The entire restaurant is spotless. The food is authentic. The service was phenomenal. All of the staff are hospitable and you can tell the chefs really care about their craft. The kitchen is an open concept so you can view the experts at work.
Sushi and pad Thai were amazing. Not sure how this place has 4.1 stars, it does not reflect the experience I just had for sure.
Will definitely be back!

I love all these great new restaurants in Uptown Boca. Only wish they had a little more parking. Lol what can you do? Anyway, this is a fabulous sushi spot. Quality of the food is excellent. My husband had some sort of sushi lunchbox and he loved it. I had shrimp pad Thai. Delicious! The restaurant was spotlessly clean and the service was perfect. We will definitely be back.
