Specialized Japanese Edomae Style Omakase sushi
This is my fav omakase place in DMV area. The chefs are professional and the food is unique. You would never have the same experience at other places. If you have anything you don’t like to have, the chef is willing to accommodate (as long as you are not being ridiculously picky like ‘I only eat Uni from Hokkaido but not from Maine’ etc). All dishes are based on the daily preparation. If you like surprise, then you should definitely come.

Sushi Ogawa is a phenomenal Sushi experience to try in DC. Reservations required/strongly encouraged. The variety of fish and offerings was fantastic and the freshness of the sushi was impeccable. The restaurant itself is unassuming in more of a residential area, and inside is very cozy (seating for maybe 20 people max, no music playing). You have a choice to order the Omakase set meal in advance ($240+ per person) and dine in front of chef, or order a la carte at a table which is what we did which range in price from about $50 to $175 per dish. They offer a variety of a la carte options and sizes (4 course, 6 course, premium etc) which usually serve 1-2 people. Great selection of sake as well. Highly encouraged Sushi Ogawa; it is among the best sushi in DC in my opinion (Nakazawa, Nasime etc)…we will be back!

Exceptional and authentic, with some of the finest sushi I’ve had anywhere in the world. Individual attention and absolutely the highest grade of fish possible make this a must for true sushi connoisseurs in the area.
If anything, I must say that the only low points are some of the meat courses of the omakase. Wagyu just couldn’t hold a candle to the fish and felt uninteresting by comparison! There is one piece of the largest omakase offering which contains wagyu, foie gras, and caviar - and just seems unreasonably indulgent. Sometimes there is such a thing.
Cost is high but the quality is right there to match. If anything, we left feeling stuffed to the gills and that’s not that common with omakase so the portioning was really generous and lovely. Would have loved to see more dessert options and integrations around something cold and savory at the end but that may or may not be traditional. Just some culinary feedback based on the menu.
If you’ve got the means, you shouldn’t be disappointed here.

Great food - one of the best sushi place on east coast! But be careful of overcharging, make sure to double check the bill.
The sake we ordered ($70) was initially labeled as $100 (which was odd because it had the same name of the sake which was on the menu), and the prepaid portion from online reservation (~$50) was not reflected.
I would visit again but beware of shady business practice. But again, the food was fantastic so I may forgive them.

Felt like I was in Japan! The atmosphere and quality of fish was amazing. Came back a second time with the entire family and everyone was more than satisfied. The chef is extremely experienced and if you come here you must get the bar seats (or else you don’t get as high of quality fish). Definitely the best sushi restaurant in the DC area even when compared to a Michelin sushi restaurant I went to a while back. If you’re a sushi fan pls give this place a try.

I’ve been dining at Sushi Ogawa for years, and it has consistently been one of the most exceptional omakase experiences in the city. The chef’s skill, attention to detail, and passion for his craft are evident in every dish he serves.
The intimate setting of the restaurant is part of its charm, and the chef works hard to create an atmosphere where guests can truly appreciate the artistry of sushi. Every meal I’ve had here has been both delicious and thoughtfully curated, with personal touches that elevate the experience.
While everyone’s experience may vary, I encourage anyone considering Sushi Ogawa to give it a try. For those who value exceptional sushi and a genuine connection to the craft, this restaurant never disappoints.

We went to Sushi Ogawa for my best friend's birthday and we all agreed that it was one of the best meals we have ever had. All of the fish was fresh, the chef was wonderful and accommodating, and everything was absolutely delicious.
I urge you not to compare the price of Ogawa to other omakase in the area. Trust me when I tell you, you get more than your money's worth.
For reference we sat at the chef's counter for lunch in March. Stand out dishes for me were the Japanese barracuda, chawanmushi, hand roll, and the dish with fresh yuzu.
Everyone at the table (3 men, 2 women) were stuffed by the end of the meal!
Thank you, chef, for a wonderful day and a wonderful meal.

We went to Sushi Ogawa to celebrate my husband’s birthday. Since he loves sushi and the restaurant came highly recommended by a friend, we had high expectations.
Unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to them. We ended leaving after the two appetizer plates. We were seated at the far side of the bar tucked away in a corner. While this wasn’t ideal, it wasn’t something that had bothered us. We had originally thought that there were going to be two chefs but when the meal began, the chef did not serve us one dish nor introduce any of the dishes to us. The host that had sat at the bar served us everything. There were no explanations about the food, and when we addressed this with the chef, his response was that that the other chef had called out sick and that the host/waiter was his assistant.
To summarize:
• Our seating was poorly positioned at the end of the bar, our view was obstructed by a blow torch, we couldn’t see the chef preparing or plating the food. The table was also cluttered with various items.
• The dishes were served by a host/waiter, not the chef. While the chef referred to the waiter as his assistant, I’ve never experienced an omakase where an assistant handles the service.
• No explanations about the dishes were provided.
• The chef would simply push the dishes toward the waiter with a gesture to serve us, which felt unprofessional.
• Even after we politely shared our concerns, the chef didn’t respond with any apology.
I don’t know much about the chef’s background or how proud he is of his craft, but I believe it’s important to first master the fundamentals of good customer service. However we did get a full refund.
I hope he can learn to accept feedback with an open mind, regulate his emotions, and reflect on his actions. I sincerely hope that my feedback helps him grow and contributes to the success of the restaurant.

The omakase was delicious, pricey but it is to be expected with these tasting menus. One annoyance was picking one bottle of sake, the waitress went back to get it, saw that they were out, recommended another similar slightly more expensive one, went to get it, and came back with a third different bottle because they didn’t have the second one that she recommended, which at that point was almost twice the price of the original bottle. Considering we were only two tables in the restaurant I’d have expected more thoroughness from the service or comping the difference in price. Also I think they snuck in a service fee on top of adding a tip line item which resulted in unintentionally tipping 40+ % tip

Had the best sushi experience of my life here recently. My best friend and I went for the sushi bar experience, and Itamae/Chef Ken and the staff made it a truly awesome dinner.
Approximately, 25 courses, and every single one was delicious (especially the oyster starter and the kinki).
Highly recommend for anyone that wants a special sushi dinner/experience!

The omakase experience here was, and I cannot stress this enough: *transcendental*. Everyone on staff was delightful and knowledgeable, but that pales in comparison to the food. Sublime is an understatement. Words won't do it justice. If you have the opportunity, I hope you have the same experience we did.

No one does an omakase better than Sushi Ogawa. Other places have popped up but there’s a reason they have been in business for over a decade. Freshest fish I’ve ever had and you know it’s fresh because they will show you the fish you are eating lol. Hospitality is off the charts and they will use ingredients you can’t find anywhere else. Chef Jin your restaurant has stolen my heart and my stomach 🥰

I went in on Friday 12 pm for counter omakase, showed up without reservation at opening and the waitress quickly seated me to the counter. Kevin explained each dish to me and made sure I was full before I left. The wagyu nigiri was awesome with the foie gras and caviar.
Discount by cash.

Given the ambience of the place — the staff completely unaware of any Japanese culinary tradition and culture — I expected nothing of the place when I first arrived. It turned out that the food was not as bad. I had ordered Matsu sushi for $60 — there was no way I would order a $240 omakase given all the inexperience staff revealed. It was okay but not to the standard the restaurant seems to aspire, given its price structure. The sake list was not exceptional. Overall, it is another restaurant I will not return.

2.5-3/5 stars
For a $700+ meal, you’d expect better service. Food is good, but with us (me and my wife) being the only people for omakase, the chef chose to bring his own guests midway through our omakase and duly forgot about us. Disappointing as this was our first omakase and he knew about it. Do not think we’ll be visiting here again.
PS - please make sure to check your bill properly

This place was way overrated. The sushi was fresh but the meal and beverage prices exorbitant. The downstairs dining area drab and very brightly lit. They had Charlie Brown Christmas music on loop, ir was absolutely maddening 🤯

Food was good but didn’t expect to pay $700 for 2 people. It says omakase is $240 per person but they add service charge? Or some kind of charge and it costs us $700 for one meal... We don’t drink alcohol so we ordered hot green tea and coke and the total was $700… I’m Japanese and are a lot of omakase sushi in the US but I felt like this restaurant was way over priced. My husband and I were shocked. The chef was nice and food was good, but you can find place to eat same quality omakase for much cheaper.

Oh My God!!! The best sushi you will ever eat! You will pay the price for the quality... it is also the most expensive sushi you will ever eat. I was surprised that on our second visit the service slipped a bit... we had to ask for soy sauce and wasabi! I was also surprised to see a 20% tip included... I almost doubled it! Be warned. The sushi is so good these complaints are nothing! Worth every penny!

I ordered the special sushi assortment for take out but it didn’t come with any wasabi or ginger. When I called, they made excuses and reluctantly apologized. Not sure what happened but quality seems to have gone down, which is unfortunate given this was a good sushi place in DC.

Overpriced fish at a temperature as if it sat in a delivery vehicle for an hour ——— I don’t know his this place is part of the Michelin guide. The fish was served with no preparation absent dabbing some wasabi on the rice. A real sushi restaurant doesn’t serve wasabi and ginger. Their 28 piece plate was a plate a mix of just 8 kinds of fish. Servers were nowhere to be found despite being the ONLY person there! Service charge if 20% is included so they probably aren’t motivated. The fish was just warm. Hoping I don’t get sick. Overpriced to the point of being offensive.

Not worth the money. Blatantly overpriced. Pay close attention at your bill: service fee included, meaning no tip needed. They do not disclose that, obviously counting that customers will overlook this note on the bill and pay extra tip. Located in the shady basement, no windows and rather gloomy inside. Some ten pieces of sushi (mostly rice, not much fish), a small cup of miso soup and a glass of water cost me $100. Ridiculous.
I do not think I will go to any Japanese restaurant after this miserable experience.

I don’t know where to start. Let’s just say in less than a year I’ve spent 5 figures PLUS dining at this establishment just to find out I’ve been getting ripped off. I was befriended so they can give me handwritten checks (and everyone else gets printed checks) with 20% tax (it’s supposed to be 10) and charge me twice for omakase while I’m drinking and enjoying myself (not once. But a few times). I feel robbed and disheartened. Jin & Kevin (The new owners) are solely responsible for this. I can go on and even say I came once and really enjoyed a bottle of wine, Jin overheard that I was surprised the bottle was $80 when nobu has it for $120. I come back the next week and order the same bottle and lo and behold my check is handwritten with $120 written next to the wine. For this spot to be THE MOST EXPENSIVE OMAKASE IN DC, it has very low standards and treat their staff as well as their customers poorly. What started out as a great find quickly unfolded into this nightmare of an experience. I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone any more after bringing them several clients, I feel betrayed. I never even got a sorry. Pls don’t waste your money here. I recommend sushi taro, or Nakazawa for a more traditional and appropriate experience.

The environment is detailed but no-frills at this yummy downtown establishment. We had the sushi bar omakase and our chef was truly amazing. Expect to have to keep your eye on them - these chefs move fast and make delicious artistry in scant seconds. What they make will surprise you, melt in your mouth, and make you beg for more. We needed help to walk home and are happy as well as full.

Had a great experience here as always! Kevin and Carlo are awesome and always spoil us with entertainment.
The sushi was presented with tid bits of information and they are also very accommodating to guests with special requests. My party had someone who was allergic to shrimp for example and were presented with options to sub it out.
Our waitress Salina was personable and was always ready with the water refills. She also welcomed us to the restaurant in a vibrant fashion. Will definitely be coming back.

I just went this place last night for my best friend’s bday celebration. It was a last minute decision so we only had dining area option. Servers were kind but they def need more training. They didn’t aware of their drinking menu, didn’t even know what they were serving while we were doing their premium omakase. The fish cut was inconsistent but still taste really good. And while their website is saying 18% tips will be automatically charged, we were charged for 20%. I used to tell my friends i like ogawa better than nakazawa, but last night’s experience changed my opinion. If you are an sushi expert that you know what you are eating without proper explanation and service, and will not going to be irritated by your servers becuz they never have an answer for you, ogawa is fine. If you are looking to have an excellent dining experience with a good food quality this is not the place for you.

Omakase is supposed to be at the counter not in a dining room. It makes no sense to do so and maybe it’s the fact I live in nyc but I’ve never seen a price point difference of double for that (in fact I’ve never even been given the option to not sit at the counter as it’s part of the expected experience). No sushi in DC is worth that when you can get better sushi in NYC at the counter for less than they charge for dining room omakase. I didn’t end up doing the omakase due to the disappointment about how they think it’s worth $240 versus $120 to sit at the sushi bar versus in the dining room. We ended up ordering some maki rolls and while the fish is fresh, the experience, service, and website all leave something to be desired.

The ambiance of the restaurant is extremely underwhelming darn near off putting. I was originally seated at a table with a dirty placemat and fruit flies buzzing all around. One landed on my partner’s appetizer. We told the waitress and the chef offered us a glass of sake. We weren’t drinking this night so we declined. I asked if there was anything that could be done about the fruit flies and the chef told the waitress that we could be moved to a private room. We get to the private room and the second table connected to ours had a visibly wrinkled dirty table cloth. At this point things weren’t going well so I removed the cloth so we didn’t have to look at the food stains on it. Then it felt like each piece of nigiri in the Omakase had wasabi on it in some way. Which I considered weird because I’ve been to several places like this and they usually always dissuade you away from using wasabi so you can actually enjoy the flavor of the fish. The food. Let’s say we got 12 pieces and we enjoyed potentially 4. The miso soup was gross. The service was terrible. The waitstaff was not friendly from the moment we arrived. Our waitress was very dry with us before we had any issues. Ultimately we had a terrible birthday dinner here while visiting DC. I am now down $314 and wishing I would have gotten Italian food or just gone anywhere else but here. Omakase is supposed to be an experience even if you’re not eating at the sushi bar. This was an experience and not a good one. I’ll never come back here again and if you want to consider coming here I’d tell you that you’d be better off burning your money because it’ll be a waste of money but at least you won’t be stuck in a dirty restaurant.

Poor service. We had 2 people and asked for an extra menu so we could choose from. The staff did not understand and just stared blankly.
The food was just okayish, the tuna was good and the fatty tuna tasted as expected. However, the sea urchin had spikes in it and had a stinky smell. The white fish was chewy and did not taste fresh. The salmon was rubbery and had no taste at all. They put a lot of wasabi in the nigiri so that I could see the wasabi through the fish.
The restaurant charged an 18% service charge for 2 people which is usually a charge for a large group of people. They also tried to get a tip over the 18% gratuity.
Went to this restaurant because they had a high rating and had their name in the Michelin guide in 2017. However, the quality must have gone down since then. Prices are expensive too, all this for 100$.

Sushi Ogawa is a hidden gem in the heart of Washington D.C. that offers some of the best sushi in the city. Located in the upscale neighborhood of Chevy Chase, Sushi Ogawa is a small and intimate restaurant that offers a truly authentic Japanese dining experience.

My girlfriend and I attended the four course tasting dine-in experience and overall it was a bit of a let-down. The food overall was good 3-4 out of 5 stars with a few stand-out dishes. However, the value simply wasn't there and we both left very hungry (that's never happened in our prior tasting experiences). In addition, the ambiance was really unacceptable. Harsh lighting, being very close to other patrons, and lack of music all made the dining space feel very uninviting. We did not do the omakaze experience, so I cannot speak for that option. We won't be returning and for half the price tag, would still not recommend.

If you only read one thing: Take an uber, there is no valet.
The food was exceptional, premium quality. The service was fast and courteous, with well orchestrated course pacing. The presentation was sometimes inspired, sometimes very "average" (which I'm not really upset about). I very much enjoyed the red ale as a pair to the tasting menu, reminding me fondly of my time in Japan. The "15 sushi" course of the tasting menu is probably a bit much, so bring your biggest appetite (and carry your bruised hubris out with your uneaten sushi).
The dining room floor has uneven floor tiles, and hastily painted walls/trim showing poor workmanship, which is unfortunate for a restaurant awarded a Michelin Star. Other artwork on the ceiling, as well as tasteful Japanese design elements with (quiet/appropriate) background music are the positives for atmosphere and ambiance. The restroom is a single stall right next to the dining room, also unfortunate (unsure if other restroom accommodation exists). The "smart casual" dress code is seemingly a very loose requirement -I saw about 3 people in joggers wearing basketball shoes in the dining room, no they were not celebrities.
There is no valet service, and parking in this area is **ABYSMAL**. Do not drive yourself here, because you'll likely park 4+ blocks away and be stuck walking. The parking situation is probably my single largest disappointment. Take an uber.

We ordered omakase and choya yuzushu (yuzu wine), and the omakase came with several small courses with a main sushi plate. The food was authentic Japanese food, and the service was good as well. However, I’m not sure that I would be interested to come back at this price point. (Follow me on IG ➡️ miss_dawang)

Easily the best omakase experience I've ever had. I've had the privilege of dining at the sushi counter several times and each time has been absolutely exquisite. The chefs are experts and go out of their way to make you feel welcome and ensure that you have a mind-blowing meal.

The fish and beef were of high quality, and cleanly executed (except the kitchen prepared lobster). Unfortunately I think it lacks omakase creativity and imagination that I expected for the $240 per person price tag.
Also, the place/bar we sat was in the front portion of the restaurant and I felt it was for 2nd class non-Japanese, or non-Very VIP guests. For some reason, it did not have any cozy or intimate atmosphere I often feel at other higher-end omakase places (translate: $200+ per person for DC area, $300+ for NYC area). I suspect that the other portion of the dining area may be nicer (?).
Additionally, many things should not have happened here at a restaurant in DC (not NYC) that charges $240 per person for its premium omakase: (1) no one offered to take our coats. we ended up hanging our own coats by looking around and finding hangers on the wall behind us, (2) no one gave us those warm, wet hand-cleaning towels (seriously, a restaurant like this forgot such basics??), (3) plates were not nicely placed, parallel to the edge of the placemat, (4) minor juice dropped on my placemat and left there for two courses until i can’t stand it any more and wiped it off using my napkin (not sure if the chef even noticed that), (5) the lobster was swimming in overwhelming, too sugary sauce. Poor lobsters died for nothing. (6) boring, unimaginative, non-creative ice cream as desserts (the entire meal was unimaginative, but this dessert dish is the worst of all)
I do not think I would come back here bc it did not have what i expect from a higher-end omakase meal. If you want to try this restaurant, I suggest you ask to be seated in the main (?) dining area, not the one close to the front door section. Maybe you would have a more pleasant experience.

Good quality food preparations and sourcing of ingredients. However, the “premium Omakase” option at the chef’s table can be described as: uninviting, unpassionate, and lack of proper seating separation. Chef will expertly prepare each dish, and deliver it in front of you without any explanation. Your curiosity with each ingredients will be diminished by the murmuring of the name of each piece of Nigiri. There were two chefs tonight at the chef’s table. One was very passionated with his interaction and introduction of the dishes to a group of 4 customers. The other chef who served me and the remaining 3 customers was quiet, and uninterested in any interaction with customers. The experience will vary by which chef is serving your meal. However, with the price I paid I cannot justify the level of unprofessional service. This will be the last time I visit this restaurant and I do not recommend its Omakase experience.

Ordered take out from here - one of the top rated sushi restaurants in DC. They fly their fish in! And you can even buy whole fish! I got their salmon special and wow. So amazing. Freshest salmon I've had on the east coast, big slices, worth the cost. Will return and maybe do one of their tasting menus....

Placed my order on 11/28/2022 via DoorDash. One of the item I ordered was Special Sushi Assortment for $130 unfortunately it was significantly different from the picture that was posted on their website. When called to complained about the discrepancy between my order and the picture next to the item I ordered I was told in a very rude tone that there was just the wrong picture and they are going to remove it but no apologies nor credit was issued for their mistake in my order that total $229 before taxes and fees. In addition order came without any chopsticks and a very limited number of soy sauce packets which apparently should be ordered as extra items. Simply not honest business that I would never use again.

Went in at a Monday noon for a la carte, and told by one indifferent waitress that they only had sets. That’s fine. And almost everything included in this $120 sushi set is shown below: all of them were rubber-like, hardly better than a Whole Foods produced one.
I don’t know if the omakase would be as good as claimed. I just saw a 1-star restaurant on a Monday at noon.

Tasty but really expensive and I’m not convinced it was worth the price. Especially when ice cream was the final course. The service was not exquisite despite the exquisite price. Server started taking away my dinner companions’s plates before I was done with my fish. The chopsticks were the cheap wooden kind that you have to break apart.

Reliably top-notch omakase. The sushi counter is expensive but well worth it.

The food is fine but I would not recommend to try omakase here. Some nigiri are not fresh, you can taste the fish is melting in your mouth without the texture that’s supposed to be. I talked to someone about the fish and she just said she would inform the chef. I didn’t get a response even when we headed home. It’s over price and the price doesn’t match their decorations.
There’s still something good: my friends said their takeout are better and toro/chutoro/otoro are good. I would probably try take-out next time. Their website is also great because I would love to know what’s in season and the latest arrival.

Food is good, but it's way over priced for what they served.

Quality of food is extremely low. I lived in Japan for 5 years, and i have eaten sushi all over the US, this probably is the worst sushi i have ever eaten. Spend your $200 somewhere else. This place will deff disappoint you.

I will start with the cost for two Omakase including tip is $400. Yes it is pricey but is worth every penny. We did order a smal bottle of sake 🍶 which I highly recommend with the Omakase course. You will get the best quality of everything, love the toro, sea eel, both uni (from CA and Japan) and the wagyu beef grilled in front of you. my understanding is the Omakase menu changes because they choose what's best and in season. Sushi chef is also very friendly and explained every piece of sushi 🍣 with us and gave us a couple of extra pieces too ☺️.

This is a great find. The staff (when I was there) are all 100% Japanese and take pride in their service and quality. The prices are a bit high, the main dining room does not match the ambiance of the entry or other parts and entry is a bit odd. I recommend sitting at the sushi bar or having a large enough party to have the private dining room. In all, 100% worth the trip.

Absolutely phenomenal omakase experience! From the delicious, fresh, and flavorful fish expertly prepared and layered on top of perfectly cooked and seasoned rice (which is honestly far rarer than one would expect), the wonderful chef and the conversations I was able to have with him while enjoying the meal, and the great selection of sake to complement the meal, every part of Sushi Ogawa's omakase was executed to perfection. The chef's selection included enough food to leave you stuffed to the brim, but you won't be able to leave a single piece untouched. If you're looking for a delightful omakase in a relatively small, intimate environment in D.C., definitely give Sushi Ogawa a try!

If I could give less than one star I would! Never been treated so poorly. Wanted to eat dinner, was greeted with rudeness from the moment they opened the door. Asking if we understood that they have things a la carte or order from a tasting menu. I said we will be dining a la carte. I had my children with me 12 and 9. They were the ones who suggested sushi for dinner. We sit down and she brings us a paper menu. I don't see rolls and that's what my kids prefer. It was sashimi and I alla she is walking away so you have another menu and she rolls her eyes to other patrons and says rudely if you looked its on the back you would see it. I got up and walked out. Never in my life have I ever been treated in such a way. Save yourself and don't go here! The place was practically empty and now I know why! Walked 2 blocks and walked into another sushi place and have had nothing but kindness since we walked in the door!

When you walk into Sushi Ogawa, you recognize that it is a humble place. The ambience is more like a mom-and-pop style sushi place, but the omakase was top tier. The variety of dishes was delightful and well balanced, and the chef was personable and engaging. It was everything we wanted out of an omakase. The $240 price point was a little steep, but we will definitely be back.

We had the $180 omakase and were not disappointed at all. Nirigi and maki were all well-crafted in traditional style with fresh ingredients. However, we were more impressed by the work that went into the appetizers. Even the deceptively-simple chawanmushi came with complex and rich flavor that you can't find in many places.
The two last photos were unagi don and sushi from the a la carte menu.

This restaurant is a total rip-off. Server was good. Sushi was good. But they were not worth $240 a person. For that price, you want the fancy atmosphere, not cracked glass door,… you want server to Wear a uniform, not jeans. Server had his cell phone nearby and washed hand with water (not soap). For sushi place, this is unprofessional. You want the chopstick to be special not a cheap disposable one,,,. The food and experience was worth $80 person. This place is a fraud and ripoff. Not sure how they are staying in business. Probably they are dependent on random tourists who come there only once. I feel really bad to provide this review specially that it is hard for restaurants to survive because of pandemic. I do believe that we were ripped off today and that is not a good feeling.

One of only two restaurants in the DC area serving traditional Omakase, Sushi Ogawa should be at the top of your list to visit on your next trip to Washington DC. We experienced one of the most intimate and spectacular meals we have ever had. The chef's knowledge of the ingredients and craft are only paralleled by his enthusiasm to share his experiences with us. We truly could not of had a better experience, and highly recommend to anyone who loves great sushi, great company, and great sake!

First, I will say I don't give mediocre reviews very often and to give something less than 5 stars it takes a significant experience. In Ogawa's defense, the food itself was good, but for the prices Ogawa commands that's not enough. I took my fiancée here for her birthday dinner and with the prepayment online of dinner, tax, and tip it was over $180 per person before drinks. The reason I mention the price is that Ogawa's not a typical California roll-type sushi place - it's a traditional omakase restaurant.
The cuts of the fish including the fatty tuna/otoro were some of the worst cuts possible comprised of the gristly part of the fish. The net effect was akin to rubber and not at all supposed to be the butter like experience of good fatty tuna.
Other sushi restaurants of this caliber give incredible attention to detail in ensuring things like the ginger and chopsticks are positioned according to the diner's arm usage, and the food is artfully placed on the serving trays. Here chunks of fish were splatted by hand on the tray before the chef went back to other tasks. I felt much like pig a being slopped.
Other small items like the cheap splintery chopsticks and sharp broken porcelain chopstick holders made the entire experience feel very cheap.
Also, I'm not sure if Ogawa is cutting food costs but I left hungry, and after a nearly $200 meal I shouldn't be hungry. At one point, we were the only customers in the restaurant, and a sous chef brought out two plates of bits of soft-shell crab and laid them down. The chef took one and sent the other one back, and then proceeded to further cut up the tiny bit of soft-shell crab.
Overall, I regret having to write this kind of review, but I wished I had seen these kind of words from someone else prior to going here. I honestly left angry at having wasted such a large chunk of change for such a mediocre meal and want others to avoid the same mistake. There are many other good restaurants to go to in DC.

I strongly discourage anyone from dining here. We were seated at the sushi bar with two young women who made speaker phone calls and played videos the entire time we were there. Restaurant staff looked uncomfortable but did nothing to assist us despite our request. I would have left but the restaurant demands that you pay for the entire meal in advance. We spent a lot of money to have a miserable experience. I have sent messages to the restaurant but not had the courtesy of a reply. Many better options are available in DC.

Superb Omakase experience. Fixed chef menu $150 per person, sat at the Sushi counter and the chef just kept serving us sushi after sushi, top notched. Had a great sake to go with. Restaurant is situated in the premium neighborhood of Kalorama, may need to loop around the neighborhood to look for a parking spot. Definitely will come back.

An absolutely unforgettable dine-in experience. We received the 25 course omakase and every piece was immaculately prepared, cut, and served alongside freshly grated wasabi and sliced ginger. If you have the dime, peruse their large assortment of Japanese sake to pair with your meal to elevate the experience. I would absolutely recommend this location if you're seeking a premium sushi dining experience. Your money will be well spent (reservations are prepaid in full).

Quality of the omakase at the bar was fantastic, and service was quite good, although a little hard to understand. I personally felt the preparation was excellent all the way through, but my companion felt the amount of wasabe on many of the nigiri was excessive. A bit hard to understand accents of the waitstaff, but they were plenty helpful and cordial. The sake recommendation paired well with our tastes and the food. $370 total before tax and tip for 2.

A lots of flying insects >.< we paid 390 for two includes tips and tax. The environment is poor, we heard a customer said it’s disgusting and then they left without finishing their food. The food is OK, but it doesn’t worth the price. We just came back from NYC and visit Yakitori Torishin, similar price and much better experience. Don’t go before they clean it up.

Food was good but overpriced. Arrived to see only omasake of $150 and $200 per person offered in the noon? Unagi don with only 2 pieces of unagi does not worth $28…environment is narrow, crowded, and seems hectic sometimes…i’d give 3 or 2 stars if not for the staff, staff were really friendly tho, explained the menu well and gave us chocolate for not offering dine-in option for no omasake customers.

I wish I could give 5 stars but I was pretty disappointed with the take out I ordered last week. It was ok the tuna was a little fishy, since there is no picture when ordering this platter online I would have ordered something else if I knew there were mackerel.

Great experience. Top notch omakase, it was a busy night so we didn't get to chat with the chef too much about the fish, and the covid screens made it hard to hear what he was saying, but we appreciate the quality and delicious fish nonetheless. Actually left feeling full, which is amazing! We'll be coming back.

Guys be ready to read a long complaint. I was SHOCKED by the omakase experience at Sushi Ogawa given the price. We booked a private dining room for $200 per person “premium omakase”. I was charged in advance of $1140: 4 people’s omakase for $800, and 20% service fee. Who wouldn’t expect to taste delicate Japanese cuisine and experience high-end services with that money spent?
Okay the story begins. First, my tea cup was leaking water, wetting the paper sheet in the tray in front of me. Told the server, changed a cup. The food was just okay, but I didn’t want to complain the food quality here because that was not the biggest thing I wanted to complain today (at lease it was non poisonous but who knew if it was clean). After finished each course and before we were given the miso soup, the server came to collect our dishes WITH ALL DIRTY DISHES FROM OTHER TABLES ALREADY IN HER TRAY! That almost freaked us out especially during this Covid time, which was the main reason we booked a private dining room.
Okay now is the most horrific thing happened that night. When she was passing the spoon for the miso soup to my son, she held the spoon with her finger on it!! Wearing gloves? Of course not.
The last course was the desert. The so called desert was two slices of watermelon, three grapes, one slice of mango (very sweet, probably the most impressive food of the entire dinner) and a tiny slice of a grocery store grade lemon cake with super sweet sugar frosting.
Overall this easily became the WORST omakase I’ve ever had. Comparing to the $180 omakase in Trump Hotel, $250 omakase at Nobu in Malibu, I felt pathetic about Sushi Ogawa.
—the end—

Here is what I’ve experienced Friday night. We four adults booked indoor private room dining. $200 per persons. With mandatory tip together we paid $1120. With this price, the service supposed to be high end. What they provided us is: 1st, the spoon they brought us is with water in it! They just washed and no high temperature drying and sanitizing, all dish wash water in spoon. 2nd, the lady who brought us spoon put her finger in our spoons and passed to us. She’s def. not trained how to serve in a sushi restaurant. 3rd, the lady who cleaned out empty dish just went in our room with other room’s empty dishes. I feel so disrespectfully and unprofessional about the service in this pandemic season. A waitress can’t bring other rooms left over food and dishware to our private dining room. I have not complaint the dishes yet, it already made me feel disgusting. 4th, one of our cups is leaking water.
