Kay was our server and she specifically made the entire evening by making us feel right at home and and not only answering our many questions but she took the time to get to know us and treated each of us like family. We tried a little bit of everything and nothing disappointed. I definitely will be going back!!

Absolutely Delicious sashimi and hand rolls!
We spent the day in DC and wanted some great sushi and Umai Nori did not disappoint.
The large Sushi Mori sashimi selection had so many different fish in it (12 I think) and they were all high quality and delicious.
Everyone sampled their hand rolls which come in sets or a la carte. The flavor combinations of the hand rolls were stunning and I really enjoyed the spider roll.
We were with a gluten intolerant individual and the restaurant did such an amazing job ensuring he could order safely and without issues.
To top it off we got some oysters which were fresh and served with a spicy topping.
I'll definitely be back next time I'm in DC!

I had the pleasure of dining at this exceptional sushi restaurant, and it was an unforgettable experience. From the moment I walked in, the ambiance was inviting, and the service was impeccable. The staff was attentive, friendly, and made me feel truly welcome.
The star of the evening was undoubtedly the food. Every bite of sushi was a revelation—fresh, flavorful, and crafted with precision. Just piece of art! But the highlight of my visit was meeting Chef Mr. Lee. His passion for his craft is evident in every dish. As a special treat, he served me a roasted fish that was not on the menu. It was simply exquisite—perfectly seasoned and cooked to perfection.
This restaurant is a gem, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. If you're a sushi lover or simply appreciate top-tier cuisine and service, this is a must-visit. Five stars all the way!

The food and service was amazing! Top tier presentation and the fish is super fresh. My favorite was the handroll of Uni from Hokkaido! I would go here just for that, it's that good. My only tip is if you prefer to sit at the sushi bar, clarify it on your reservation and when checking in with the host/ess. I did on my reservation, but host didn't honor it and my friend was upset. So be sure to mention that you want the sushi bar! I will be back for the grand opening.

Words cannot describe how excellent this sushi restaurant is. Only been there twice and every time, exceptional service and welcoming atmosphere. Service is always making sure you have everything that you need. The food while pricey, is worth it in the end. A wide variety of options to choose, each outstanding in there own way. All menu items taste very fresh, especially the nigiri and sashimi options. Highly recommend the broiled fish head, perfectly cooked and delicious. Only superlatives can accurately describe this restaurant. Highly recommend to anyone and everyone who like sushi.

Absolutely delightful sushi restaurant with some of the kindest, most friendly staff you'll ever meet! I randomly dropped by Umai Nori for a quick Saturday lunch, but I will absolutely back very soon -- I was so insanely impressed by their food, quick and friendly service, and the vibes.
It was quite busy when we arrived, even though it was ~2 PM, so we were taken up to the second floor to one of the last available tables. We were initially seated at a two-person table in the corner, but shortly after we arrived, a four-person table opened up. The staff quickly cleaned off the table and offered to move us to the larger table so that we would have more space -- so incredibly thoughtful! We ended up moving over and were situated directly beneath their lovely blue skylight, which flooded the entire space with a cool bluish purplish glow. Each of the tables also had a lovely little lamp, creating a remarkably cozy and intimate vibe throughout the entire restaurant.
They have a pretty expansive menu, including both classic and fun specialty sushi rolls, as well as other Japanese classics. However, our server was super helpful in offering recommendations, so we ended up splitting their takoyaki, a tuna roll, and two of the sushi tacos (one of Umai Nori's specialties). The food all came out super quickly and was outstanding. However, before our food arrived, our server brought out several surprise rounds of free food, including a miso soup, small salad, and edamame. All three were solid; the soup was comforting, the salad was pretty standard, with iceberg lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, carrots, tomatoes, and a lovely carrot ginger restaurant, and the edamame was topped with a delightful savory, umami, and spicy togarashi.
After our surprise round of free starters came the takoyaki, which was nice and soft, with a great crispy crust on the outside and generous portions of octopus in the center. These little dough balls were topped with Kewpie mayo, takoyaki sauce, and bonito flakes, and were all around a solid representation of this classic dish.
Then came the star of the show -- the sushi! The fish was super fresh and really well prepared. I loved the tuna roll (it's a classic for a reason), and it was so clear why the sushi tacos were Umai Nori's specialty. This unique, slightly fusion take on the classic temaki, or hand roll, was comprised of a crispy sheet of roasted nori, slightly warm, sweet, and sour sushi rice, and a generous helping of beautifully prepared fish. I got their hamachi and scallion taco, and my friend got their salmon avocado; both were absolutely incredible, and I would love to come back to get one of their 3, 4, or 5-taco sets in the future. I also loved that they included a little plastic sleeve on each of the nori sheets that you remove right before biting down; it helps to protect the seaweed from the rice and keeps them nice and crispy until the last bite.

Great sushi, sashimi, and specialty rolls - no doubt one of the best I’ve tried in the area. We ordered Sashimi set, sushi/roll combo, two specialty rolls, and chicken bento box. They were all solid. Salad and miso soup was provided before each dish. I took out one star because they charge you for credit card processing fee: cash price and credit card price are different but my server didn’t inform me before I paid. Other than that, very pleasant experience.

Got greeted by hot green teas upon being seated by the bar which was lovely. Ordered a bunch of rolls, nigiri, skewers and the chef’s sashimi platter as a main to share between two. The fish was so fresh and the cuts varied in texture and flavor profiles which was fun to eat. Service was amazing too - everyone was friendly and helpful. 10/10 recommend!

I have chosen this place to rejoin for the evening with my old good friend who lives overseas now. We hardly could make a better choice. It is a wonderful blend of superior food, cozy atmosphere and smiling stuff that never pushes you out although you finished your meal and others are still waiting for their places to be vacated.
Their food is not a culinary gem, it is however perfectly fresh, well balanced, reasonably priced and artistically presented.
Their layout and absence of loud music makes your conversation easy and you don't feel or hear other people's talking.
Staff serves you in a perfect sync with how you go through your food and through your conversation. THANK YOU KAY, YOU ARE THE BEST

We are really looking forward to visiting -all the appetizers, salad and soups were delicious. The sushi was... I have no other adjective: disgusting. The rolls were extremely large (we did not order futo makis). The avocado was brown on some. The fish was sad (and tasted weird) and they were just disheveled. It really was one of the most horrible restaurant/sushi experiences I've ever had and as a member of the service industry I understand that there's good days / bad days and things can happen, but those dishes should've not left the kitchen and it was more than one dish. The handrolls that came from suhi counter were great. The rolls that were served were awful. There was also a roach that came to greet us at the table AND one up the wall. The service was outstanding. Sad this happened. This was in October 2024.

Love this place immensely. Service was top notch and food is SO GOOD. I got the spicy salmon roll and the Ninja Turtle specialty roll and neither disappointed. Probably the best spicy salmon roll i’ve had, ever. Period hands down, no competition. Ambiance is great-standard sushi bar spot.

One of the only reviews I’ve ever written - this is the best restaurant I’ve been to in a long time. Absolute warmth from the staff (Kay was incredible!!), super high quality sushi at good prices with a wonderful vibe. I wasn’t drinking and Kay brought me out a butterfly pea tea for free. I went with three friends but this would also be a great date spot or bring the family. Set and forget type of reservation for any fantasy football heads out there, couldn’t recommend more highly

I’m an old sushi fan, but I’ve never seen this quality chirashi ever in the US (even in Japan/Korea). Not only for the food but also their service was super great! Kay and Peter provided really warm-heart deep-care services toward our family. Special tempura udon for kids were exceptional… and the house hot sake on the chill-windy day was truly a life-saving warm relief!! If I were a local, I might be here every week.. super impressive!!

FOOD IS AMAZING - SERVICE WAS TERRIBLE! Please read for details.
Let me start by prefacing, literally EVERYONE but our server was amazing and deserves 5 stars.
My boyfriend and I came here for his bday; we’re new to the area and did research on a few places and landed on Umai Nori. When we arrived, we were greeted - EVERYONE was so nice and welcoming and we got there right at 5 and were the only ones there for a while. They sat us at a table in the corner upstairs where once my boyfriend sat, our server finally came over. Not talkative, didn’t go over the menu; at one point, my boyfriend was asking him a question and he just walked away (mind you, we’re the only ones here in this small space upstairs, so it’s hard to believe he didn’t hear him). We asked questions about the menu but he didn’t seem to know much, only directed us to the higher priced items.
We got 2 of our 3 apps out rather quickly, and when I kindly asked about the 3rd (which was edamame), he went to the computer then began to do something behind the bar. My roll was delivered and our edamame came almost immediately after that. During this time, it was another server that checked on us (the gentleman helping our server open the bar). Asked us how the food was and commented on our choice of sake. This was also the server that cleared our table in between our apps and entree.
When my boyfriend’s entree came out, he simply dropped it off and kept walking. Never once asked if he needed anything or how it looked… He spent most of the time leaning on the bar or ducked down where no one could see him (on his phone). He did finally come back and ask how it was (towards the end).
I never do this, because my boyfriend and I have both worked in hospitality and customer service for years and we’ve all had jobs we hate, but there’s no excuse for the lack of customer service or dismissive attitude we experienced tonight. It was a pretty terrible first impression and if it weren’t for the amazing food and other friendly faces, we wouldn’t come back.
I don’t want to not recommend anyone here because the food and the vibe is amazing. Maybe just ask for someone other than the gentleman with the nose ring and red tips.

I've visited twice and each time has been a fantastic experience! First and foremost, a big shoutout to Peter for his incredible service and positive energy. He’s so warm and welcoming, and his service is always quick and top-notch.
The food is consistently amazing! I've tried a few of their chef rolls, and they never disappoint. The nigiri is full of flavor, and I noticed they add just a touch of wasabi on the rice—such a thoughtful detail that shows true attention to quality.
Highly recommend reservation before you head there cuz this place is so popular!

Fresh fish but the flavors do not impress.
Must try: seared salmon belly, delicious and fun plating.
Tuna poke dip: generous amount of food but lacking a lot of flavors.
Rolls: I tried the salmonn avocado, roll me a fatty, torch me slowly, and tuna trio: all very fresh but hard to tell apart from a flavor profile.
The salmon and yellowtail sashimi were also very good
Only beer, sake, and wine for drinks

Bad sushi experience, didn't felt good, fruit flies, on top of that server asked me "no tip", yeah hell no, I am not tipping, so annoying.
Although front desk lady was really kind to assist us, and void our bill.

My wife and I have been to Umai Nori several times since they opened. This is by-far the best sushi spot in Washington DC!
If you're looking for an intimate, cozy atmosphere, with unique sushi (the crunchy hand rolls are super unique, as are all of the rolls that we've tried so far), this is the place for you. Chef Sonny & his team are wonderful - both in food preparation and hospitality.
This has become our go-to Sushi spot and favorite restaurant in the city! Cannot recommend more highly. PS. If you want a bit of dinner theatre, order the seared salmon belly and watch it light up!

This place has an incredibly cozy and homely vibe that instantly makes you feel right at home! I’m obsessed with the temaki style of wrapping—it's such a fun twist! I tried a variety of hand rolls, and they looked absolutely mouthwatering. The flavors were just as amazing as they appeared! The sashimi was a highlight, boasting fantastic texture and a taste that screamed freshness. It pairs perfectly with sake, making my dinner feel truly special. I can't wait to come back; this will definitely be my first choice! Huge thanks to Chef Sonny and the outstanding service from Peter!

We went for lunch right as they opened on a Saturday. The service was EXCELLENT, our server was very attentive and the chef even provided a few extras in addition to what we ordered which was very thoughtful and unexpected. We ordered the tempura appetizer, the nigiri special, and 6 hand rolls, all of the food was beautifully presented and delicious. We lived in Japan for a few years and I must say the tempura and nigiri were top notch in comparison; and while we never really ordered hand rolls while in Japan, these were fun to eat and delicious as well. Overall, the price was fair and we were very satisfied and would definitely return again.

The food was good but the service was extremely disappointing. After not even an hour, they came to our table and told us they had someone they'd reserved over us and they needed to rush us out the door immediately after we had spent a fair bit of money. Didn't even bring the check to the table. I have never seen such a thing happen at a restaurant before. It was strange and unprofessional.

How a restaurant treats its clients speaks wonders about the values of the place. Umai Nori failed majestically -- keep this in mind, if you are planning to go there. The short story: last night a friend and I dined there. Shortly after we finished our meal, the waiter (or maitre d') came to the table and asked us to leave. The reason? The place was full, and the restaurant had to accommodate other patrons who made reservations. This practice is dubiously legal, clearly unethical, and just plain rude. I will never go back there!

DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE!!! They only accept reservations have to wait 5 days to eat there and the food isn’t really that good is a average sushi honestly too expensive for the size of plates, nasty The service is terrible, they take too long to bring you everything including water. All parking around are busy and the ones available across street

In town for work and I walked to this cute restaurant from my hotel. I walked it during dinner rush and only waited a few minutes for a spot at the bar. It was delicious! I got the 3 set hand roll and a scallop nigiri. The sushi chef gave me a crispy rice tuna. I was very full and satisfied by the end of the meal. The salad had a home salad dressing, which was light and delicious. The miso soup was nice and warm, not too salty. Ingredients are tasted fresh. The ginger and wasabi was even delicious. Service was great. The chefs and staff know what they are doing and it shows through their food and service.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this incredible sushi spot in Washington DC, and I must say, the experience was top-notch. The highlight for me was the torched salmon belly—absolutely out of this world! I wasn’t expecting it to blow me away, but it was a delightful surprise that I’ll be dreaming about until my next visit. The balance of flavors, the melt-in-your-mouth texture—it was perfection. The rest of the menu was equally impressive, with fresh ingredients and beautifully crafted dishes. I’ll definitely be returning next time I’m in DC

We had an absolutely delicious dinner. The ambience was amazing-down to the beautiful wood and resin table. The food was awesome- our nine year old son said the miso soup was the best he’s ever had! My vegan husband had some great options, all of which he loved. The best, though, was the service. Kay was so personable and offered us some extras which was so unexpected. Highly recommend for fresh sushi, amazing service and an overall beautiful setting. We will be back!

Mara was amazing, I don’t get service like this at home. The sake, the crab wonton, and the sushi was amazing, I will definitely be back. It also doesn’t hurt that is has that aesthetic quality, and the pictures came out cute too. This has been my favorite meal visiting DC!

This new Dupont sushi spot feels like DC’s best-kept secret—a place that, dare I say, outshines Nobu without the fuss or inflated price tag. If you’re looking for the essence of truly great sushi—freshness, flavor, and a warm, inviting vibe—this place has it in spades. Our server was super friendly and had great recommendations!
The seared salmon belly here is nothing short of spectacular, rivaling anything I’ve tasted at high-end spots. It’s rich, buttery, and perfectly seared!
Finally, a DC sushi spot that delivers where it counts: flawless fish and genuine hospitality.

The hype is real! New fav sushi spot in DC hands down!
Vibe is casual and approachable. Went on a Saturday night. There was a mixup with our reservation but I called beforehand and they were still able to accommodate us around the same time as our original reservations. We sat at the bar which I preferred as we were able to watch the sushi chefs in action. They even gave us a few extra dishes on the house which was so nice!
We ordered WAY too much food but all of it was so so good!
What we ordered:
- The seared salmon belly
- The nigiri collection (11 HUGE pieces of the freshest melt in your mouth fish)
- 3 hand rolls (hamachi crudo, toro negi and suicide squad)
- The sunny sunshine roll.
The seared salmon belly is a fun starter dish to get with a group because they light the plate on fire which sears the salmon. The pieces of nigiri were so generously sized (think 2-3 bite sized pieces, not 1 bite sized pieces like at other places) that my husband and I split each one. The hand rolls were also enormous with so much fish. The sunny sunshine roll was also really fresh and yummy but I only had one because I was so stuffed at that point so we took the rest of the roll home with us.
Favorites were the nigiri pieces of tuna, fatty tuna, scallop, salmon and there was this white fish (can’t recall what type of fish) with tiny black roe on top that was soooo good. The fish is so fresh (like melts in your mouth fresh) and the nigiri is HUGE! So much fish and at such a reasonable price!
Service was both friendly and incredibly fast. I’d say we were in and out within 45 minutes and we weren’t even trying to eat fast. We never felt rushed. Overall 5/5 experience. Would highly recommend and make sure to make reservations (can’t go wrong with calling for a rezzy to be on the safe side). We will definitely be back!

I have been to every sushi restaurant in DC. This is easily one of the best. Phenomenal sushi rolls, fresh fish, excellent specialty rolls. This is a much needed addition in the sushi market in DC. We have been twice in the last week. The service is also excellent—they are a small team working really hard to provide a great experience. 100% recommend and I am difficult to please.

Umai Nori is my new favorite spot for sushi/sashimi in DC, and I’ve tried them ALL - the Michelin rated ones, the hyped up popular ones, the ones on the foodie lists… this place stands above all of those. The price-for-quality is incredible. My friend and I were very impressed by how amazing our sashimi and sushi quality was, and had to double take the price on the menu because we’ve easily paid double for far worse cuts at other places in DC. The hand rolls are also very unique and chef Lee creates some incredible flavors that compliment the fish (the roasted sesame one is perfection). I can’t recommend this place enough - it is SO GOOD!
Aside from the food, the staff and ambience were also top notch. We had very attentive service, and the waitstaff were very polite and kind and the space has a great vibe. We also had a chance to talk to chef Lee since we opted to sit at the bar and learn more about his vast experience as a sushi chef. He was an absolute delight to talk to. Easily one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in DC, hands down and one that I’ll be recommending to everyone I know! Thanks for the amazing meal and experience, Umai Nori!

Our server/host was friendly, attentive and a superwoman at the same time, tending to take-out orders. Our order was preceded by an unexpected house small salad and the best miso soup we’ve had,,,the broth was light and not overpowering with miso. We were then served with a piece of yellowtail that was cooked with the skin and as a peace offering for having us wait too long! We didn’t even notice…the sushi bar was so delightful! Our sushi and rolls were generous portions and the shitake hand roll was simply unique and delicious 😋. You gotta go there!

The chef cheated on toro by regular tuna. Beware of this so-called Japanese restaurant operated by Korean!

Had an amazing birthday dinner!! The fish was SO fresh and flavorful. Kay, our server was incredibly friendly and made our experience so special. The seared salmon belly was delicious and it was really fun that they torch it right in front of you. I cannot recommend Umai Nori enough. We will definitely be back!

Went there to try out some sushi, the food is really good but the best part of my night was a service. Zaya was my server and she really paid attention to my request and checked with me with a proper amount of time and it went really well. Such a amazing experience!

I think the only regret of coming here was not having more room in our stomachs! Umai Nori was right around the corner from our hotel, and after a long day we decided to peek in and see if we could grab some dinner on a Tuesday evening. We did not have any reservations, but they were able to seat us immediately at the bar and I would say they were the best seats in the house for the two of us. The head host, our waiter, and our sushi chef were all extremely friendly and got to know us a little as we bonded over the sushi, our recent trip to Japan, and even our camera haha, but aside from the quality service, the price, size, presentation, and quality of the sushi far exceeded our expectations and we're all amazing! The sushi chef even gave us a couple complimentary nigiris, miso (full of umami), and salad and they were just the cherry on top to an excellent meal! If we're ever back in DC, this will be our first stop!

Super fresh sashimi and beautifully sliced! Ordered takeout of Chirashi (very hefty!) which included beautifully cook tamago and a slice of otoro! It deviated a little from the traditional with seaweed salad as a topping instead of pickled vegetables but each piece of fish tasted super fresh and they do not skimp on the rice! At $32.00 prob one of the best Chirashi deals in the city!
I also ordered tempura - the vegetables are super fresh and it came with two pieces of shrimp. What a steal at $12.50.
Loved that I could select between domestic and Japanese uni. Got the Japanese and it was super creamy and of great quality.
Will be ordering again and visiting in person.

Baffling incompetent service, mediocre food that looks better than it tastes.

This place truly cares about their food and how the food is presented to you. I ordered a shrimp roll & inari sushi - the tempura shrimp roll was the largest shrimp roll Ive seen in my life. They were generous with the ingredients - it had avocado, crab stick and cucumber. The bento was nicely packed & I liked that they cared about their presentation. The takeaway chopsticks, napkins, were of good quality, and everything was just packed so nicely. I also enjoyed the miso soup, light but flavorful. I highly recommend this place!

Possibly the worst restaurant I’ve ever been to in DC. I don’t normally write negative reviews, but I’ll make an exception for this place. We had a reservation, the hostess said their “system” isn’t working and sat us at the bar. Then, we had the worst waiter I’ve probably had…ever. He was rude, forgot our orders multiple times, picked up plates when we weren’t done. Just so rude. They also had no cocktails, no beers they claimed to have in the menu. Just an absolutely terribly run place. Oh and the food? I’ve had plenty of sushi and fish in my life, the food here has no flavor. Go to Perry’s, Zepplin’s indeed. Or order from Umi in woodley park. So much better. I hope this saves someone from coming here. I can’t think of a worse experience in dining I’ve had in the city.

First time visiting DC and we stumbled upon this place after seeing their website saying they were voted Best Sushi In Town. Well its true! This sushi was by far the best we ever had! The staff and chef had heard we were new to visiting DC and they did nothing but surprise us with complimentary marinated tuna and dessert. The rolls were bigger than rolls we've had before. While watching the sushi being made, you can tell they put grate care into creating their dishes. This place is worth eating at not just for the food but for the wonderful and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

After seeing Chef Lee's You tube videos, my wife and I made reservations in DC for a celebratory dinner on a Wednesday night. We arrived to an attractive and bustling establishment and were greeted by the hostess who seated us at the end of the bar despite our special event. Turns out that the couple who followed us were seated upstairs, so alternative seating was available. This unenviable location turned out to be loud and quite unpleasant as there was a continuous flow of individuals/delivery people congregating around us as they came and waited to pick up their take out orders. We were surprised that our kind and hard working hostess was also our waitress, among many other jobs she was performing that evening including bar tender and controller /assembler for the non stop take out orders. This was disruptive to our dinner as we were rushed to order over 3 interactions, delayed in receiving our initial beverage, and were later served by a rather unpleasant server/bus boy/garbage disposer. There was a full display of top shelf liquors but we were perplexed to learn that we were limited to wine and beer (and the Sapporo draft was too foamy to serve). We ordered 2 starters (edamame and a custom Maguro Rose made with Toro (pricey but SCRUMPTOUS), 2 specialty rolls (Hirame shiso and Mango Tango) and a hand roll. After a significant delay, a hurried server arrived with the hand roll rather than 1 (typically edamame ) or 2 of the starters we ordered. When asked about the starters, he rudely replied that the Maguro wasn't one and he later brought the edamame, which was spicey but lacked a salt flavor. Soon after that, the large fish filled rolls were served (YUMMY) and we finished with the hand roll which by then had been sitting for the course of the meal. The food was nearly all FABULOUS, but clearly, the haven't worked out the staffing and workflows for a relaxing and enjoyable dining experience since opening in May '24.

They give you huge portions but there is better sushi in the city. We made a reservation but they seemed to have over-booked or gave our table to someone else because we had to sit at the bar upstairs in the corner (they had to add a chair to the bar to have us fit) instead of a table or the sushi counter downstairs per our reservation. Wasn’t that big of a deal but a mild bummer considering we planned ahead and were expecting a better seat / experience. They microwaved the sake in front of us which I was surprised by considering it’s not the best method of heating sake. Overall the staff were very friendly but the food itself was mediocre. I wouldn’t come back and I wouldn’t recommend this above some other great sushi places in DC

We saw their IG posting and decided to try it out. This was our anniversary. The food was amazing and the presentation was incredible. They offered a few items for free to taste them. I will cone back again.

Wonderful service from all. I ordered the amaebi nigiri, egg sampler hand roll, and nigiri collection. Hand roll is a little difficult to eat when sliding the wrapper, but that’s the only small critique I have. Nigiri is very fresh, and the front of house gave a great sake recommendation. At the end, they kindly gave complimentary baked yellowtail.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Made a reservation for 7 pm. Arrived at 6:50, no table available. No seating at the bar. Had us wait at the pick up counter, not being served any water or drinks for 10 minutes. Then we were seated at the bar with no option to move to a table. Food was incredibly fast and amazing. Great quality for the price. However, our server was very slow. Hope they can improve this.

We ordered a lunch roll set (caterpillar roll, torch me slowly roll and California roll) and a chicken toriyaki / skewer, and it’s sufficient for a two people lunch. The caterpillar roll and torch me slowly roll were both delicious, but the chicken skewer was a bit not tender enough. It took us a while to wait for the bill during the peak hours in lunch time.

Good sushi, flashes of greatness in need of refinement.
Took the family to DC for a long weekend getaway. We stayed near DuPont Circle and Umai Nori was a well-rated sushi restaurant within easy walking distance.
We arrived at a nondescript entrance where a sign was posted mentioning a "soft opening." Inside, the decor was modern and clean and we were seated right away. Having traveled, we were hungry and so decided to indulge. We were not greeted with the traditional "irasshaimasei" welcoming to the restaurant and neither did the counter staff really acknowledge us as we walked to be table at the rear of the ground floor. Hospitality -1.
We ordered an assortment of nigiri, sashimi, special rolls, a hand roll, and chirashi, more than enough food for us to get a sense of their sushi chefs' skill with fish.
The takoyaki was good with enough pieces of octopus and a savory mayo drizzle. Could have used perhaps twice as much shaved bonito. Wonton soup was tasty and dumplings done right. The salad was fresh with the bright, savory sesame dressing a highpoint. The miso soup had plenty of seaweed and some tofu but was considered too salty by all.
The sushi and sashimi portions were ample but the cuts were a bit inconsistent in thickness. This was especially noticeable in the chirashi where multiple slices of each fish are presented together. The ikura (salmon eggs) were fresh and plump with no popped or flat eggs. A good sign.
Their signature item, the hand roll is a creative variation on the traditional maki handroll which is cone shaped. You can see that it draws from the packaging design of pre-packed ready-to-eat onigiri (triangular rice ball) as you might find in a Family Mart in Tokyo. In particular, see the plastic film that supports the taco-shaped roll and separates the nori wrapper from the moist fillings.
However, this curiosity is quirky and not entirely successful. First, the toppings heap over the seaweed wrapper and tends to topple when the hand roll is lifted for the bite. Second, if you hold the uncovered end and pull on the wrapper to remove it, it unsettles the fillings causing you to have to pinch the roll to hold on, further squishing out the fillings. It's also awkward to bite and, finally, expensive for the quantity.
The special rolls were all uniformly good. Well-rolled, well-filled and attractively inside-out construction. Notice again, however, the very obvious variations in cut thickness. Each section, aside from the ends, should be of uniform width. This may seem a trivial detail, but is an essential indicator dedication to the craft of sushi as opposed to simply being instructed to cut fish.
A special note on our server, Peter K. He was attentive and solicitous throughout if noticeably hyper. Training should focus on establishing a sense of ease and comfort, relaxing you and preparing you for the experience. And although his eagerness to please was never in doubt, we could tell that he was trying perhaps a bit too hard and coming across as less than confident. Peter has potential, though.
The food, already good, has potential. The setting, modern and attractive, has potential. The staff, professional as they were, have potential. The overall impression of Umai Nori is of a sushi restaurant with aspirations above its current level of execution. It is refinement of the noted points and more that will raise Umai Nori to that level.
Reveiwer note: My family and I have traveled throughout Japan for leisure and business over the years and love all manner of food from sushi to yakitori to ramen and izakaya.

Came to DC for a conference and luckily found this exceptional restaurant for sashimi and sushi. Kay, our server, is knowledgeable, attentive, and answered all questions that my colleague and I have. We ordered the Sashimi Mori, a set of 4 hand rolls, one extra "torch me slowly" hand roll along with a regular bottle of hot sake, and two special dishes from the Chief. All came extraordinary and super fresh. It was enjoyable and incredible. We hope to have another chance to come back and try other items in their menu.

This place has ruined sushi for me forever. Nothing can surpass UMAI NORI ever again. Please order the set of 6 so you can experience a wide range of absolutely mind-blowing flavors. Normally, I don't love miso soup normally, but this miso soup was INCREDIBLE. Give 10 gallons to go so I can have it every day at home.

Went in for dinner and ordered the 6 set hand rolls and they were all pretty unique. I really loved 5/6 of them with the exception of one(believe it was the scallop) that tasted a bit too much like mayo but still enjoyable. Also ordered the seared salmon belly which was amazing and awesome presentation. And probably my favorite was the lady killer which was packed with salmon and guacamole. Miso soup was also seriously good for it being such a simple item. I’ll definitely be coming back here again and thank you to our waiter for making us feel welcomed and for being really attentive.

I'm Korean and had quite a lots of opportunities to have Japanese sushi. This place is real sushi. Every elements of restaurant and dishes is perfectly balanced. Tbh, I don't like some sushi which have too big fish but tiny rice. This place provides balanced combination of rice and fish. Also rice itself is also well cooked and seasoned, not a dry cold rice.
Servers are kind, atmosphere is great, and food is fantastic.
We had a lunch sushi set A, avocado fried shrimp roll, and a sushi on the lemon. The fire show made me I’m treating myself.
Even salad and miso soup was great!
I really hope you to visit here.

TLDR: Fresh fish, bomb service, badass kimono and mural
AMAZING!
I LOVED the experience I had at this restaurant and will definitely return the next time I’m in the area.
I walked here from my hotel and arrived about 45min before closing. I had some worry that they would turn me away. The exact opposite happened! Everyone was extremely warm and welcomed me in happily.
The interior is small, with a a couple of tables and sushi bar seating. There was a beautiful ceremonial kimono framed and hanging, and in the back there was a lovely mural (picture added).
The service was fantastic from start to finish. If you go, ask to be served by Peter. He has a great personality and even better energy, he is the vibe check.
Down to the food! I ordered the Sashimi Morí and Snow Angel sake. I’m not sure if everyone gets soup and salad, but Peter brought it out to be even before I ordered so I was a happy camper. The dressing they use on that salad is AMAZING. I want to say it’s peanut-based but I’m not 100% certain.
The serving size was quite generous and I received 3-4 slices per type of fish. The quality was very good. Probably top 5 that I’ve had. I was so happy lol

I have never left a review before, but Umai Nori absolutely deserves to be the first.
Went at lunchtime during their soft opening, and it was the best sushi I have ever had. The 4pc Hand Roll Set was out of this world and the included miso soup and salad were excellent as well.
Service was excellent. The manager Kay was lovely to talk to and clearly was trying to coach up her staff to be even better (if that’s possible).
Will be visiting every time I visit DC from now on!

Excellent quality sushi, and the specialty rolls offer creative and tasty combinations. I ordered a variety of the taco style handrolls and all were extremely good (the softshell crab was exceptional); the only issue is they can be challenging to eat neatly as they are packed with fish (which is a really good thing!) - as we were a group of close friends it was no issue to be a bit messy. The service was professional and friendly, and very responsive. We ate upstairs- nice lighting and decor, and the music was at a lower volume than most restaurants, which I appreciated. The quality/value is the best I've encountered in DC in the past years, and this will now be our #1 sushi destination.
Update: we have since ordered take out, quality was just as exceptional, and shout out to the environmentally friendly packaging - all sushi was in cardboard boxes instead of hard plastic that most restaurants use - thank you!!
