Takara 14 is an authentic Japanese restaurant located in Washington, Dc. We not only serve delicious Japanese food, and sushi, we also offer vegan options and take-out!

Randomly chosen Sushi Japanese restaurant nearby after running errands in the area…
I found a hidden gem… it was upstairs, small cozy atmosphere with nice decoration- not too much- …not too crowded which I like…
We had nice drink” Lychee Sake” . It was super smooth one we ended up 2 bottles … and we had white wine , it s ok …
For food , we don’t eat much … “ Baked Mussel is a must pairing with wine or sake… again we double order .. then we had rolls and etc…
Staffs is very friendly, they are all very attentive…
I heard there is bar and rooftop upstairs but we didn’t check it out, we ll definitely going to check it out next time :)…..

Great find while walking past. The food was reminiscent of many nights in Tokyo - authentic flavors, good portion sizes and served beautifully. The ambiance was just right, and the staff were all very friendly, always had seemingly genuine smiles and quite efficient.

An excellent spot for some delicious sushi options. The fish-to-rice ratio is excellent. The nigiri is “painted” with soy sauce. The staff are friendly and helpful. This is a great spot for a 3rd date when you want to impress! Very unassuming entrance. Look out for it!

This is a great sushi spot along 14th St. it has a lot of good options if you like traditional Japanese food or sushi. They have a good sized cocktail menu with lots of options. The food is the star of the show here, the restaurant itself you can dress casual or dressed up and it would be completely fine. It doesn’t get busier till later so if you want a quiet dining experience, I would go a little early. Their Chu Toro is fantastic. All their fish is super fresh. I plan on spending $50 per person when going here. Definitely not the most expensive sushi spot but still nice. This is our go to for sushi in the Logan Circle area.
1 Year Later Update:
My husband and I have become regulars here and I have to admit it’s still amazing . We have gone to a lot of sushi restaurants in the city and for a casual weeknight sushi spot Takara 14 never fails. We have now had the sushi to go. We’ve eaten inside. All of it is great. The staff is super friendly and it really just adds to the whole experience not to mention that their fish is so fresh. I take so many people when they come to visit here and they all are super impressed, especially since they also have an Omakase experience, which is such a fun treat. I highly recommended a year ago and I still highly recommend it. Thank you Takara 14!!

We came here on new Year's Eve from out of town. We came based on reviews. Overall the food is just ok, not the best and not the worst. You'll probably be disappointed if you're having a sushi craving and you've experienced very high quality sushi in the past. The service was very good, polite and friendly. Unfortunately, I will not be back.

For the price I'm really disappointed at the quality and taste. Ordered 3 maki rolls. Rolls were not neat. Rice had way too much vinegar such that I couldn't really taste anything else in the roll. The fish I could taste did not seem exceptional to be priced that way.
The many generic local sushi joints I've visited in my life with $6-8 maki rolls have all been *significantly* better.
Ordered take out so only got a quick look at the restaurant but it seemed to have a nice ambiance. Order was ready earlier than expected, front desk was friendly!

This review is for the Raw Omakase upstairs. It was fantastic. We visited just weeks after it opened and took a chance because of the few reviews. The vibes were curated beautifully. There was excellent music, lighting, and a comforting atmosphere. The sake pairings are exciting and complimentary. We eat a lot of sushi and omakase. Here, we were served some of the best rice and freshest fish we’ve had. The experience reflected Chef Johnny’s top-tier training juxtaposed by an endearing authenticity. I believe this sushi counter will be a heavyweight in the DC omakase/fine dining scene because of the quality of the food and uniquely unpretentious approach.

My friends and I went one evening trying out different Japanese foods and was a little disappointed with this restaurant. The waitress asked us about which water we would like (spring or tap) and we had said spring. For water alone it costed us $15 which was a little upsetting. My friends both had curry which was mediocre at best, not enough curry/vegetables especially for the price; The Chicken and pork werent well seasoned either. Overall Its an okay restaurant but I wouldnt say worth how much money you would spend.

We went to Raw Omakase, which is upstairs in Takara 14. Our experience was simply fantastic! The sushi was fresh, delicious and well prepared. The sushi chef and sommelier were both engaging and knowledgeable, and made the evening very enjoyable. We enjoyed the 17 course meal with an excellent pairing. I highly recommend Raw Omakase and will surely return.

Unfortunately, underwhelmed. The staff and menu are impeccable, however, we had issues with our order.
We ordered the Opal roll, the one prominently featured on the restaurant's social media. Instead we got something vaguely reminding of a rainbow roll. When I asked, the waiter was like - we ran out of sesame paper, so we have a new presentation. Ok...
Then we ordered the 10 pcs omakase each. Instead of bringing 10 different types, again, featured all over their photos, we got 2 of each nigiri. They tried to sell this to us as 'chef wants you to try one with soy sauce and one without', but I was not buying it. The nigiris, while fresh, were quite pedestrian. Tuna, salmon, mackerel.
All in all, we dropped $225 on this dinner and it was underwhelming. Definitely not as advertised on their photos, left a bad after taste.

I come to Takara 14 often as I live in the neighborhood. The wait staff is always so kind and welcoming. Their omakase is an incredible deal at $50 (6.25/piece) and I love their happy hour deals as well ($7 cocktails and discounted sushi). The Citrine roll is one of my favorite rolls in all of DC. You must try this place!

Owner Janice and chef Johnny have a vision that goes beyond your usual sushi spot. The care and knowledge put into the plates made me very happy! Any one can put tuna on a piece of rice, but they know how to cut and serve hamachi and mackerel sashimi properly too and to me it’s what makes the difference. I will 100% be back!

$$& HAPPY HOUR PRICES ARE THE SAME AS REGULAR MENU! $$$ Somehow the cucumber roll is MORE expensive on HH menu compared to regular menu… The server was very confused when I asked her about the weird pricing. She did not understand what I was talking about. Sushi isn’t that great anyway. Restaurant was empty the whole time we dined there. Don’t waste your time or money here unless you want a boring and bad experience!

This place rocks. Random comment but any time I order spicy sushi in my home state, I’m disappointed it’s not spicy. Their spicy tuna actually has heat, and it’s delicious! Also some delicious sake!

Was looking forward to the chef experience. Overall, atmosphere was nice, we had attentive but dismissive service, and the food was just not good. We appreciated the attempt to add courses to rectify our concerns but the standard wasn’t met.
First cold courses: tuna in tofu and tuna with fried onion strings. Both lacked flavor and color. Not bad but nothing to go back for.
Nigiri: four varieties (great!) but three were overpowered with wasabi. If you have fresh protein you don’t need to overpower.
Hot Dishes: Mackerel and mussels. Mackerel was dry with no flavor. Mussels were overall dine with jalapeño. Could not stomach either and still feeling the “fishy” smell of the former.
Service: understanding we were not thrilled with the hot dishes they brought a hand roll (eel) and soup on the house. We appreciated the gesture. The hand roll was bland. The soup (egg drop with shrimp) had no flavor.
Overall, these dishes either lacked flavor and character or spice overpowered the protein.
Have been to two dozen plus omakase restaurants and this ranks last. While we appreciated some adjustments the food was quite subpar.

A good mid range sushi place. In between the crazy expensive high end places and some of the cheaper neighborhood places, Takara 14 occupies a good niche as a place with good sushi that doesn't break the bank. It may not be as good as the best places, but for the price I think it was quite good.

We were running late and the staff that answered were very nice. We had a wonderful window seat to watch the city go by as we had some of the best Japanese !
Service was prompt , food was very flavorful and nice and hot ( temperature) . The servings were generous, we actually ordered more than we could eat ! The specialty cocktails are a must … we were treated to a palette cleanser that was refreshing and delicious… we will definitely be back next time we visit DC

Hyped and expensive restaurant but not worth it. Half of the menu wasn't available, food was decent but not great, service was rather slow and not knowledgeable, and a 20% service charge added to the bill for a party of three. We'll not go again.

This restaurant is lively and fun but the real star is the food, which is exceptionally good. We realized just how much care the restaurant puts into the food when we had the miso soup. It's clearly made on the premises with paste, not powder. That set the tone for a variety of outstanding dishes, particularly very high quality fresh fish.
Our server, Kate, was fantastic. Attentive and approachable.
Highly recommended.

The food and the place were nice…. But, I saw that the water was kept out on the open near the kitchen.
Probably wouldn’t have noticed i have to wait 5 minutes for the hostess to pay attention and take us to a table. (It was slow for a Friday, like you’d think they’d be happy).
My waiter seemed out of it or maybe new, didn’t even catch his name. Some tall Asian guy.
before he left us to wait for our appetizers, it took surprisingly long; but the food was good. The fish was fine, but the goyza was kinda chewy and not very spicy(we ordered fried spicy)
The drinks were fine, but a bit watered down. Big, but for the price, I expect alcohol not colorful juice.
The bathroom were clean, but the towels were low and the trash was a bit stinky.
Went to the bar to check it out but there was a bit of an order coming from the kitchen/back area.
All and all, I hope it was just an off day, but I was not impressed yesterday.
Especially for spending so much.

The food and service at Takara were exceptional during our private dinner. I continue to receive compliments from our guests. Chef Johnny prepared the food in the private room, and he catered to the special needs of our large group. As we frequently dine at Takara for "normal" dinners, we thought it would be perfect for our special event because of its friendly atmosphere and high quality, and Takara delivered!

WOW! We walked in without a reservation and were seated immediately on a Saturday night at 730pm. We ordered the Tuna Tartare, Baked
Mussels, Spicy Tuna Roll, and the Amethyst roll. Literally some of the best food we have had in DC/Alexandria. Everything was SO delicious! I would come again and order the exact same thing and be excited. Service was awesome, food came out timely. Do yourself and favor and try this place!

The inside was really cute. Went there last night for dinner before a concert, service was pretty terrible. After about 20 minutes of being seated we finally had a waitress come up and we said we weren’t ready to order food but wanted to put in for drinks, to which she walked off and we waited another 10-15 minutes for another waiter to come up and take our drink order. Food took forever to get to us also, what we did get was pretty good though. But after further inspection of my receipt this morning I realized there was at least $40 worth of food that we were never served on our bill.

I booked a reservation here using the OpenTable app. The reservation was for an 8 course tasting menu that the chef prepares. It was a really fun and unique experience that we really enjoyed. All of the food that was served tasted amazing and fresh, and was prepared excellently. The texture on all the food was incredible. There were also drink pairings with the food which were indeed paired very well. There was not a single dish that we did not enjoy.
The staff here is also super nice and welcoming. They checked up on us frequently and refilled our water often. They also asked us questions about the food and were very engaged in conversation with us which was fun.
This restaurant is located in DC, so you will need to find street parking. I found a parking spot 5 minutes away walking distance on a Friday night so I lucked out. Once you get to the building you go inside up to the second floor. There's surprisingly a lot of tables. The bathrooms are very clean.
This tasting experience was quite expensive, but I think it's definitely worth trying it at least once for a special occasion. The hostess also mentioned that the chef prepares different food items every time, so if you come back for the tasting course it will be different, which I think is very cool.

In my case the food was horrible - I ordered unagi-don (which should be a bowl of hot rice with unagi eel on top of it), they brought me a plastic square sushi box with cold rice and lukewarm eel. When I complained that it’s not how it should be, they kinda warmed it up - and it appeared they placed eel on sushi rice, not normal steamed rice (that’s how it should be), so after being warmed up, this rice became extremely smelly of vinegar. So I paid 26 USD for the dish in which I had to carefully separate still edible eel from awfully smelling rice… their chef doesn’t know basics about Japanese cuisine (I hope it was just sushi vinegar, not something else). The thing is, July 30th this year is “Unagi day” in Japan, where people eat unagi in the days of extreme heat. So, that was a wrong choice of place to celebrate it. Hostess was very hospitable, though, and their other food might be delicious - but my experience was negative. Waist of money.

10/10 on EVERYTHING. From the moment we walked in the door, Jenis was extremely kind and accommodating; wishing me a happy birthday, complimenting my dress, and offering the prime window table for our meal. She was so sweet and made us feel welcome. Our meal commenced, we got the 8 course chefs tasting meal, and it did not disappoint. I am a quite picky eater, and literally every dish was to die for. Also- I believe the head chef is a Michelin star chef!! The cocktails were absolutely incredible; there was a drink pairing option for only $35 which included Prosecco, Sake, and a cocktail, my fiancée loved it. I enjoyed the Lychee Geisha, which was so good that I texted a few friends to let them know they had to come and try it sometime soon. James was warm, welcoming, and shared some fun facts about the food and sake. He was a really fun time and certainly added to our wonderful experience. He improvised a mint green apple martini, which sounds odd, but again- was amazing. Everything was so delicious, I couldn't have had a better birthday dinner. Everyone needs to try this place. Thank you James, Jenis, and the chefs for enhancing our experience and making it so wonderful.
PS- the music playlist was so fire I asked for the name of it 😂

It's as if they've fallen from the second floor. Food so bad nowadays, you should be paid to eat there. The problem is the staff is nice and they know what's up so you feel bad saying anything and definitely don't want to punish them, but seriously get a new chef -- it's sushi and few rice dishes, and you've really learned just how to mess it up.

What a disgrace of a restaurant. Went there for restaurant week and the waiter told us it would be filling. It was definitely not filling at all. They make it sound like an upscale place but no, don’t believe it. Also, if you make a “reservation” they take reservation fee that should be cancelled when you’re paying at the end but if we never said anything as a group, they would of forgot. Front worker was super disorganized and just out of place. Highly do recommend this place at all. DO NOT RECOMMEND

Came for restaurant week and it was overpriced…food was okay, just okay. You can find much better sushi and ambiance elsewhere for a lot less money.

We came for restaurant week. Luckily it wasn't too busy, the restaurant was only about 60% full. Our server was James. It took our table 20 minutes to be greeted. The drinks we ordered when we finally were greeted took another 30 minutes to come out and only did after we reminded James that we were waiting on them. The cocktail they brought was the wrong one (and that should have been obvious since we ordered a hot cocktail and they brought a chilled drink). Each of the 3 courses came out wrong. They were offering 2 desserts and when it came time to bring them they informed us they were out of the one we had all ordered. I wouldn't have come if I had known I couldn't get the dessert I ordered (to be fair, it's one of the three courses and even with restaurant week, the dinner was $55 each). The appetizer and main course were decent, but not $55 decent. They knew they had messed up, so they brought us a seaweed salad, which was delicious. Overall, very expensive for decent food, an unorganized kitchen, and awful service. I wouldn't come back.

The sushi was really good. Also really liked the green mussels. Tuna tartare was ok- I liked the chips but the tuna itself was a little too gooey for my taste. Lychee cocktail was sweet and good. The snowball cocktail was tasty.
I really wanted to like this place and I’ll give it another shot, but two things left me feeling not great. First, our server seems to have never worked in a restaurant before nor possibly have ever eaten out at a nice restaurant. I know it’s tough to find good employees but whew, she really did not have the right personality for this job. Everyone else was great! Second, my short ribs came out cold. I know I should have said something so they could have had a chance to fix the problem right away. But I didn’t and I regret it. I felt bad saying anything because they were so busy and we’d already waited a while for food. Both the guy who seemed like a manager and the chef came out to apologize and they both offered to make the dish again for me. But I’d already choked down as much as I could swallow and had already ordered more food. I was full by then so I didn’t take them up on the offer. I think they’d made a mistake and mistakes happen. But I think the standards are higher in a place like this and sending out cold food should not happen. Plus this was the kind of mistake that happens more often during restaurant week. My guess is that they premade some of the Restaurant Week dishes and forgot to warm this one up. I will give it another try when it’s not RW

Good but not exceptional sushi. Focus on appetizers
Try the Pork Belly Gyoza and the Sake Shrooms are delicious.
The Jade roll (Waygu beef) is great and at a significant premium. The Opal, Peridot, and Global rolls are good and pretty standard price for special roll. Same can be said for the spicy salmon roll.
Good, reasonable drinks.

Everything I tasted at Takara 14 was absolutely delicious! Our server was very attentive and made it clear that she cared about making sure everything was to our liking. The decor was very charming and the ambiance delightful.

We made a reservation for 9 people and really appreciated them providing such great service and amazing food. We had a wide variety of dishes, the sushi was beautiful and fresh, wagyu bowl was delicious, the Takaria 14 cocktail was our favorite, and the atmosphere is so sweet.

The omakase was phenomenal. In the past I’ve been wary of mackerel due to the color but I was so glad I took the chefs suggestion as it was absolutely delicious. Ask about the corn miso as it was so satisfying. Everything about the meal was good. Quiet little places tucked in behind a Thai restaurant and just pass Jinya Ramen.
The service from the wait staff was a little lacking(no question on drinks or appetizers, slow to take menus and provide the bill), but the chef was great at the sushi bar, and kept them on top of their game as best he could. Highly recommend for exquisite sushi and sashimi!

This restaurant is decorated beautifully and the staff are extremely friendly. We loved the food we ordered. Especially the pork belly gyoza and chicken karaage appetizers. We had a great experience here!

This was so yummy! Janis helped us with a table for a large group for my sister’s birthday. She had such a great time here. The food was delicious and the drinks were stellar, we all loved what we got. Some highlights were the geisha lychee drink and the flavored sake. The staff and the location give such a warm and positive vibe. Will definitely be back.

Food and atmosphere was average at 3/5, but -1 star because of the really slow service. Sashimi we had was smaller than average size you can get with the same price and the quality/freshness/prep isn't any better than the average. Expect the service to be really slow even when there aren't that many people.

Nice neighborhood spot tucked away in a building. Sushi was fresh. Chu Toro, Scallop and Uni just melt in your mouth. Good fish to rice ratio. Rolls were creative, unique and tasty. Owner is a bit pushy - didn't love that - she wanted us to get the more expensive Sake and go for the tasting menu. Tempted to take away a star for that. Anna was the sweetest waitress ever - super nice, kind, courteous and efficient. Would definitely go back.

Fake omakase. The quality of food is horrible for what the price is. We will never come back.

Came here for date night and the whole experience was on point. Let me start by saying that my husband and I travel and lot and as he would say "I'm very picky about food". There are very few places that impress me enough to write a review and this is one of them. We found this place randomly on Open Table and booked the culinary 8 course omakase experience for $85 a person. We also upgraded to unlimited select alcohol for $30 a person (for one). If I could, I would redo the whole culinary experience and repeat the magnificent culinary journey again - it was that good. It's hard to pick my favorite dish of the 8 we tried. Every dish was perfectly crafted by Chef Johnny. The staff was very friendly and made the whole experience even more memorable. Can't wait until we are in the DC area again - will definitely be back!

My wife took us out on a date to this place and we were both beyond pleased with everything from the amazing service to the culinary work of art of chef Johnny. We ordered the 8-course omakese option and every single dish was absolutely amazing! The ambience was impeccable and the drinks they chose to pair with our meals were on point! If you are looking for an actual culinary experience, this is your place. We will definitely come back when we are in town again. We highly recommend it!

If I could give more than 5 stars, I WOULD. I planned a 16 person dinner to celebrate my friend's birthday and I could not have chosen a better place. The restaurant is beautiful from the moment you walk in, the drinks are so good, and the food is incredible! I had some cool sushi rolls like: the yellowtail scallion roll, the opal roll, and the citrine roll that were all plated gorgeously and tasted even better. My friends ordered the most delicious lychee cocktails, but I had my heart set on their Japanese whiskey cocktails - they did not disappoint! Jenis, the owner, treated us extremely well and we even got to meet the chef who came out to discuss their menu items. My friend was made to feel so special. The team at Takara14 made her birthday one to remember. Thank you all so much!

All I can say is WOW. The food at Takara 14 was amazing. The sushi and apps were unbelievable with such high quality. We ordered a few different things for dinner and I probably said "this is so good" a million times! The bartender, James, was also the best!! He made amazing drinks and made the experience so memorable for us. I will definitely be going back very soon...yum!

I love this restaurant. The food is amazing. Both servers and chef are very nice. I am so glad to a great time in this restaurant. Will visit it agin.

1. What kind of a sushi place doesn’t put the soy sauce on the table? The waiter literally just “poured” the soy sauce and left and we had to ask for it again.
2. Not good at taking your order. Asked for rice on the outside but of course they forgot.
3. Who serves sushi on a round plate!?
4. The wines were horribly bad! I’ve had boxed wines better than what I paid $11 per glass.
5. Their sashimi was half of the normal size comparing to other places.
6. I couldn’t find much of Yellowtail in my sushi, maybe you can in the photos.
Overall, won’t be going there a second time. I wouldn’t suggest it to you either. Such a bad experience when you spend $50 per person and get that food and service.

Cute, colorful sushi restaurant with a pretty big menu of both sushi and nonsushi Japanese food. We had three rolls and the pork belly gyoza. Gyoza were okay but lacked a lot of flavor. Rolls were pretty good— the one with toro (left in the picture) was the best. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was quiet for a Saturday night and easy to get into.

We had such a lovely time at this restaurant. We chose to Trust The Chef and it paid off. A very unique, exquisite, and filling experience. I will be coming back whenever I am in DC. The staff were so kind and attentive, I truly felt at home. Whatever they put in front of me, I will eat. Jenis, Thom, Chef Johnny, and Cortez really took care of us. 10/10!

The best sushi spot in the area! Johnny and Janice made sure we had an incredible experience from start to finish. Would recommend this to anyone - if you’re on the fence, just come!

The hospitality and service at this place is amazing. We did the “Trust the Chef” experience and every meal they brought out was better than the last. Janice, the owner, was so attentive and thoughtful throughout the night. The chef, Johny, outdid himself. Could not recommend this place enough!

We stumbled across this place when visiting DC. We actually had Thai right down stairs and saw the colorful entrance and had to check it out. Service was great. Sushi was on point. Prices were really fair. The owner suggested some of their signature sushi and it did not disappoint. .

Excellent food but the service and attention from chef and hostess was above and beyond! Very recommended!

Service was terrible, we recieved our food separately and some people had to wait for more than 2.5 hours. On top of that they expected us to pay double service charge, the manager refused to split the check and she irrespectfully preasured and harassed us to pay rapidly and did not let us check the bill. Even though the food was fine it was the worst meal experience I have had in DC.

One of the worst nights out in a long time. For the large amount we paid I wished we had gone to another restaurant.
The sushi was not great, looked and tasted like something I could’ve bought at Whole Foods.
The real issue was service. Drinks arrived sporadically, wrong drinks even were just set at the table. Food also was completely forgotten for two people and we even got brought orders we didn’t make. We told the waitress and she was like that’s fine, take it.
It was a mess. An expensive mess. Do not recommend.

I went last night to eat, I was so excited because my sister recommended it and It took 1 hour to get the appetizer and another hour to get the entrees the bartender forgot our entrees and we didn’t get the whole order drinks also took forever I was really disappointed not a great experience, the place has a unique interior but they need to work in their service a lot.

My new favorite sushi spot! The decor is lovely, the staff are friendly, and the food is amazing. Highly recommend the Onyx roll, eel roll, gyoza. We will keep coming back to try more and more off the menu!

A great neighborhood sushi restaurant. The staff have always been friendly when picking up my order. We order takeout at least a few times a month from here, and sushi is good quality and tastes great. Highly recommend the gold roll!

Food was good. Service not so much. First off our order took an hour to come out, but it was a busy night so understandable. However our waitress encouraged us to get cocktails, on the menu they were $9 so we ordered a few rounds (great drinks) but then we get the bill and suddenly we were charged $12 per drink when I brought this to the waitress attention she said “it was a misprint” however she avoided to tell us that until we got the bill, then when I asked to price match it because it’s false advertising she had to ask her manager for approval. And she also charged our friend for a special roll she did not order. It overall left a bad taste in my mouth because our bill ended up $30 more than it was supposed to be and had I not brought anything up the restaurant would’ve had no problem over charging us and lying.

I have been here 13 times since this place opened several weeks ago. I am a huge fan! The sushi is fresh and delicious. Tons of variety. Staff is welcoming and the service is spot on. Fun Vibe. Great cocktails. Highly recommend this place.

Okay if you like average sushi that is not that fresh. If you’re looking for high quality sushi this isn’t the place.
Visited 3 years ago
Started off with them moving us around 3 times. Ended up upstairs on the third floor alone. Felt like an abandoned warehouse. Wanted to love this place but didn’t. Food was not good. Brussels sprouts were the best part and fine. Special rolls were not good either. Quality of fish not it. The vibe was off too. I wasn’t sure if I was in a 2000s gay bar or a tiny neighborhood sushi joint that you are loyal to but makes your stomach hurt every time you eat it. EXTRAORDINARILY over priced. This place has potential, just need to refine the space, train their staff, and stick to a vibe.
