Although the selections were plentiful
The expectations were high, and we left disappointed in the food selections & the service from the bar . We were asked to move seats for a bartenders friends & that put a real damper on things afterward .
The food was alright , not great but not bad . The daikon special could have done without .

Disappointed!! We are here for the Drag brunch. However, they canceled the 10 a.m. show without any notice. We have been waiting outside for 20 minutes in the extreme cold weather. Whoever managed the reversion did POOR work. There was NO communication at all. The manager did NOT even apologize for the inconvenience.

I reserved this morning on 10 am for the drag show. But I came to the restaurant and found out it cancelled. It’s really ridiculous without informing me. It’s the worst experience I ever had. Totally disappointed!!!

Sushi Experience №22

Extremely disappointed. We specifically chose this restaurant because of the advertised show, only to find out it was canceled without any prior notice. No email, call, or update on their website. We traveled quite a distance and planned our morning around this, only to be left with no explanation or apology. Poor communication and lack of professionalism. Will not be returning.

We did not end up eating here but we had a reservation for the 10:00 brunch show on Sunday 12/22. When we arrived, we were told it was cancelled and that only one show (13:00) was available. We did not receive any communication about this change. The restaurant staff tried multiple times to get in touch with the manager. When the manager finally answered the phone, he did not want to take responsibility for the miscommunication and stated that he tried to call. There was another group waiting with us that also did not receive any notification regarding this change. Please, in the future, notify people via email and make sure to connect with them when making such significant changes to someone’s booking!

Just two large wooden doors mark the entrance with teeny tiny writing on the bottom of one - we seriously walked past it several times! Maybe the “P” shaped door handles should have tipped me off?

The dining room is small - it is a tight space that they cram a good number of tables into, which means it is on the louder side, but we didn’t need to shout to be heard across the table so all’s good 😊

If I would have had the wagyu burger, I would have given 4 stars - my fellow diners said it was good but average. But… I say, this is a Japanese Sushi place, you picked wrong! lol - for $100 buckaroos - 20 pieces of high quality, expertly prepared sashimi is a steal and it was quite good! I will call out the fresh, creamy, delicate uni which was superb — I have had stinky, fishy uni at a few other high end restaurants in DC that was simply not good (not going to name names here, but message me and I will 😉) — so this tells me the chef know what they are doing!

Also - I have to call out my ice cream sandwich dessert, which was a little kiss from heaven! Lately I have had too rich, too large or just too complicated desserts at places and this was none of those (definitely not too large - I ate 3). The creamy ice cream paired well with the sweetened, airy whipped cream and with the crunch of the shell, the tiny hint of mint and the acid from the slice of strawberry - it was perfection in 2-3 bites, which is really all you need after appetizers and a dinner … well maybe you need triple that when it’s this good!!!

We had the Japanese breakfast here today. Highlights: great food and a pretty darn authentic experience that reminded me of the time when I lived in Japan. The flavors and the quality of the food were top notch. The trout was perfectly prepared and the skin was like perfect slightly crispy bacon. Lowlights: the hostess was about as unfriendly as you could be especially with as empty as they were. Also, we were on time for our reservation so it wasn't that. The only stumble on the food was that the crusts on the egg salad sando were a little stale. The servers didn't refill our water once during the meal. I had to flag a server down before we left to get a refill. The servers also did not explain any of the dishes to us but they did for every table around us. The 20% mandatory fee (not a tip as the restaurant tells its patrons 🙄) kept us from being able to ding the front of the house staff for their subpar performance.

Bottom line: come here for the food, which is great, not the service.

PS: I really wanted to rate this place higher based on the food.

Fun Japanese restaurant with lots of interesting fusion dishes. Casual but you will not feel out of place dressed up for a date.
Very good service.

Recommended: udon carbonara, garlic edamame dumplings.
Also good kabocha squash and very good quality tools and sashimi even if it's worth trying at least some of the more fusion dishes.
Enjoyed the sake toro, the spicy crunchy tuna maki, and the element maki.

Drinks: the Japanese negroni is sweet! And the not an espresso martini, as per the disclosure is more a Bailey's.

Came here for the drag brunch with 5 friends. We ended up being seated at the bar, I think because the larger tables were already taken. I recommend getting there early enough to be near the front of the line if you have a big group to snatch a table. The food for the drag brunch is buffet style. Everything was delicious, and I especially enjoyed their pesto pasta and the fried chicken. The spread included something for everyone. I'm sober, but my friends who had drinks said they were very good as well. We had ample time to eat a few plates and socialize before the show started. During this time, the servers walked around with a ton of cash to break larger bills into $1s if you didn't come prepared, which was really helpful. The queens were great, and I had tons of fun. I will say it was a small room and thus extremely loud, so I would highly recommend bringing earplugs. You'll definitely still be able to hear everything, but it will be way more comfortable (my ears were ringing pretty bad after). Overall we had great time. Pricey but super fun for a special occasion!

As a Black South African woman visiting from the UK, I experienced racially discriminatory treatment here. I was the only person asked for ID before being served, while my white friend and the guest beside us were not. As the only Black person in the restaurant, I felt singled out and unfairly scrutinized. When I questioned this, the manager only added to the humiliation by claiming everyone was asked for ID, which was simply untrue. His condescending tone made the experience even worse.

I came here expecting to enjoy Washington’s renowned hospitality, but this experience has tainted my view of the city. This was a painful reminder of South African apartheid, where people were treated differently based on skin color. My evening with my university friend, which was meant to be a special reunion, was instead spent discussing this incident, overshadowing any chance to reconnect.

I hope the restaurant values inclusivity and fairness and that the management will take this incident seriously. No one else should have to experience this kind of treatment, and I hope the staff will reflect on this moment to ensure all guests feel respected and welcomed.

Truly unfortunate.

The only reason for 2 stars is the roof top deck which is really nice. If you’re going there for sushi you will disappointed. We ordered delux sushi and salmon skin hand rolls. It was almost inedible. Hand rolls were dry and tasteless, sushi had old rice and some of the fish cuts were less than fresh (spoken diplomatically). The wait staff was friendly and competent, service was top notch. If you’re after the atmosphere and great service go there. If you’re after good sushi definitely skip it. If you really want an amazing sushi go to Sushi Toro in North Bethesda. It makes Perry’s taste like gas station sushi.

We went here for my son's birthday. The quality of the fish in the sushi was good but the rolls were mediocre. We enjoyed some of the other things we got but some of them were underwhelming. It was a mixed bag overall but not worth $350 when we were all still hungry when we left. We were put at a "special" loft table that gave us all the noise and none of the attention from the staff. We couldn't wait to pay the check and get out of there.

Visited 6 months ago

Sushi Experience №122

I gave Perry’s a couple tries, but have no reason to return.

The food is ok, overpriced for the quality- typically looking better than it tastes. Very bland flavors in comparison to some of the other Japanese restaurants in DC.

On our last visit, we tried their Japanese breakfast special. The trout was decent, cooked well. The pickled veggies were a couple of slices of carrot and cucumber- maybe “pickled to order” as they were simply raw and sad on the side of the tray. The wagyu beef stew was ok, but not quite Dinty Moore quality. The mushroom/veggies in broth was my favorite item. We ordered roe and nattu on the side, having to remind the server after it didn’t come out with our tray. We also ordered a fruit Sando they forgot about but didn’t charge us for- the time waiting for the food was long as well and the mediocre quality didn’t help when it finally arrived.

Cocktails lacked flavor/balance as well, nothing special about the couple we ordered one being a tequila/margarita type and the other a watered down michelada type.

My partner and I went because our friend caught COVID and couldn’t use the reservation of 5 booking he had made. We assumed his deposit would be applied to the bill- it wasn’t. They credited us for two of the initial $42 dollar breakfast trays and pocketed the rest. So he paid around $200 to make the reservation and we had to pay an additional $80 on top of our credited breakfast trays, assuming his initial credit would be applied. Please don’t repeat our mistake.

I understand why late cancellation policies exist and that sometimes you’re stuck forking over a prepaid deposit due to illness/unforseen circumstances. The rationale sort of disappears though when you not only pocket the deposit, but take in over $300 in total for providing 2 breakfast meals. 20% gratuity always added, of course. The manager double downed after asking if the lack of credit was a mistake- that’s fine. If your goal as a restaurant is to milk your customers for all they’re worth they’re certainly doing a decent job.

The breakfast tray is probably worth $25 for fair value- we have no interest in returning and will pass along to our friends so they can get their sushi elsewhere if they ever had the misfortune of considering Perry’s

She refused to sit me at a table with the view stating they are reserved, but the atmosphere and window views were what drew me to the restaurant at the place and the entire hour I was finishing main course not happy hour oders, I was the only customer. In the end the space was empty and fill with employees chattering. It was quite a disappointing experience. Especially when they required a 20% service charge.

I love coming to Perry’s for happy hour. They have a great variety of drinks and food on their HH menu. Very good waitress let down by appalling management: disorganised, with preference given to walk-ins over existing customers. Perry's Restaurant is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Adams Morgan. From the moment I stepped through the door, I was captivated by its charming ambiance and warm hospitality.
The menu offers a delightful array of Japanese dishes, each one showcasing the chef's culinary artistry. I was particularly impressed by the Salmon Lovers platter and the Edamame and Parmesan Dumpling. The flavors were perfectly balanced, and the presentation was exquisite. The Udon Carbonara was a standout.

This place was great. We made a weeknight reservation but the restaurant was not crowded when we arrived. We sat on the rooftop, which I would highly recommend doing during good weather. The view of the surrounding area is stellar!

Our server was very attentive and friendly. They have a varied menu with some creative options (the Japanese take on Carbonara sounded incredible) but I opted for an assortment of sushi instead (various types of maki and nigiri) and everything was very fresh and good. My partner ordered udon and also enjoyed his meal.

I wasn't sure how "upscale" this place was going to be and we were a bit worried since we were out all day and not dressed up, but we didn't feel out of place. I would describe it as "elevated casual".

Myself and three friends had an 8:15pm reservation but unfortunately we were not seated until just after 9:00pm leaving us only an hour to order and eat our meal before the restaurant started closing down around us.

The manager sent out several appetizers of his selection to apologize. It was a nice gesture but I would have preferred if we could have chosen ourselves- especially as we had dietary restrictions to consider.

When it came to the food we had a selection of sushi. It was all good but not great. We did not get any entrees so if I were to go again I may try from that menu perhaps that’s where they really shine!
A few of us had cocktails and we felt they were really well done. I particularly enjoyed the sweetheart.

The restaurant itself is beautiful!

I think our dinner was really soured by being made to wait 45 minutes beyond our reservation. Our entire experience was rushed as a result.

Note: This review is purely based on my experience and observation of my body. I’m sure everyone else had no problems after dining at Perrys.

After two days dining here for restaurant week, I found parasite eggs in my stool. I never had raw fish or food since a month ago or after. I couldn’t find any other reason where I might’ve gotten the parasite. However I do have a sensitive stomach, and I haven’t had sushi for a while.

Had dinner here with my wife and a friend on a Friday evening. It was very crowded and loud, but slowly got more calm as the night went on. Food/drink service was extremely fast, almost curiously fast. We had a couple lychee and dirty Martinis. We enjoyed our shrimp tempura, California roll, and Ngiri. The Shishito Peppers had good flavor but weren’t charred enough for my liking (I think they were fried, but not crispy). All of us had the garlic fried rice with chicken and shrimp. The rice was delicious, very garlic-y, but nice flavors. My only criticism is that they only have me 4 shrimp, so I thought the protein add-ons could have been more generous.

Perry’s really popped up on my radar when chef Masako Morishita took the helm last year. Since then, I’ve heard wonderful things and seen quite a few interesting dishes on Instagram. Had to try it.

It took a little while to find a weekend reservation that lined up with my schedule, but it was worth the wait!

We started with a tasty cocktail - the “Dragonfly.” And my wife had a sake.

First, a couple of sushi rolls. We went with the Chesapeake and the Spider Roll. I am not the biggest fan of fish, but the sushi tasted fresh and delicious.

Next, we tried the garlic edamame dumplings. Delicate little dumplings, blanketed in soft Parmesan they were great.

The star of the show, and the dish that really caught my attention, was the udon carbonara. The texture was really interesting and the flavor was great.

My wife and I split all of this. I’m glad we did, because some of the very rich dishes may have been overpowering on their own.

The service was great throughout. No complaints.

What an incredible dining experience!!
I have been going to Perry’s every few years for the last 25 years but Chef Morishita has taken the restaurant to a whole new level!
No surprise that they won the James Beard award after experiencing her culinary artistry. Every dish we tried (and we tried a lot 😀) was a flavor delight.
A special note of thanks and kudos to our server Devin who amplified our experience with his love of food and expert recommendations. Thank you Devin for your attentive service and for creating such a fun and memorable dining experience!

What we ate: Tamari Roasted Peaches, Tamari Dashi Butter Mishrooms, Seared Mackerel, Soft Shell Shrimp Karaage from the Specials.
Uni Mac & Cheese, Udon Carbonara, Miso Butter Clams, Miso Chocolate Brownie with ice cream, and Red Bean whipped Monaka with black sugar coffee gelato from the regular menu.

I reserved the Japanese breakfast for my 6 y.o.'s seventh Birthday. It was a set menu. Appetizer and meal were good. Then dessert came out. My daughter was eating what looked like liquidey bread pudding. I asked what it was when the waitress came back. She said it was a cupcake. My daughter spent her birthday and the following days with food poisoning cramping pain and diarrhea. I never followed up because I was too angry and nothing can make me feel good about it. My daughter reminded me today that it was "The worst day of her life" and asked that we never go there again. This is not a cheap place and I am heavily disappointed. In Japan you would be shut down for a week and humiliated for something like this. I don't want a comp meal out of this. I expect better. So, a bad review it is. I am also angry at myself for not catching it. Service also gets 1 star for not noticing it. Multiple people failed us that day at a Perry's. A place we will never return to.

Excellent food and prompt service. That udon carbonara is something else.

Be mindful there is a 20% service fee.

Food is really good and worth the money paid. The service was ok but could be more helpful and faster. For the Japanese joint, unusually decent selection of European wines.

This spot was recommended by family who live in DC. Was lucky to find a table at short notice, and when we arrived we were greeted by the friendly staff - which I suggest you chat with to get an insider’s look into the best dishes on the menu (& the specials for that day). Best was super attentive & helped us choose the very best this charming place has to offer. Don’t be fooled by the variety of options, as everything these guys serve is perfectly prepared. The sashimi is fresh & simply melts in your mouth. I would definitely recommend the Hamachi Crudo (amazing) & Fried Rice. Critics are raving about this place, and now I know why. Excellent all around.

Came here after a long bike ride and absolutely loved the rooftop vibe on a nice summer evening. All of the food was great! I thought the Japanese sangria was just ok--very refreshing but the flavor was lacking, imo.

Service started out good, but we had to flag down our server after waiting 10-15 minutes for them to come back to take our order (to be fair we weren't ready the first two times). We also waited a very long time to be checked on again so we could ask for the check. Since we essentially had two servers (one was in training), this was a bit surprising.

Again, while all the food tasted great, it was a bit pricier than I prefer for what I got--I think there are better places to go in this price range. The rooftop is really nice so I'll probably come back for apps/drinks sometime.

We went to Perry’s for our anniversary dinner tonight. The service was underwhelming and the food was mid. The edamame dumplings starter was by far the best thing we ordered but for our entrées, I got the shrimp katsu burger and my fiancé ordered the Uni Mac and Cheese. The burger came out quickly but not the Mac and cheese. 10 minutes later, her food finally came out but was overcooked. The shrimp on the burger was good but the bread was too chewy and not good. The servers weren’t friendly and we felt rushed the entire time. We were expecting a better experience but probably won’t be back.

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!

We recently went there and had a really disappointing time. We sat at the bar and ordered drinks and food. After waiting for over 30 minutes, we asked the staff about our food and found out the chef had forgotten our order. The service and staff were terrible.

We decided to cancel the order and leave, but they still gave us a bill with a 20% service fee. As we were leaving, the food we canceled finally arrived. We had also ordered some edamame as an appetizer, which arrived, but they didn’t even bring a plate. The service was more than awful.

The interesting part was that the restaurant manager offered to cover the bill, but the waiter went on and charged us for it. At the very least, they could have deducted the 20% service fee 🤦🏻‍♀️

Overall, it was a bad experience with poor service and organization. Wouldn't recommend it.

Came here for Sunday HH. We tried spicy tuna, salmon skin (not bad!), crunchy shrimp, spicy salmon and shrimp katsu burger. Imo, the only thing that stood out was the burger. It was delicious albeit quite messy to eat. The atmosphere was great, but nothing too special. I think what caught me off guard is that the bill had a mandatory 20% service bill for the “workers up front” and they ask if you would like to tip on top of that.

My wife and I had dinner at Perry's Saturday evening. This was our first visit to Perry's and we decided to give it a try after reading they had just won a James Beard award. The only available seating was their last of the evening which was 9:30, but it worked for our schedule. We sat in their rooftop dining area which is a fantastic space especially since it was a nice evening. We ordered the Garlic Edamame Dumplings, Garlic Fried Rice with shrimp and Miso Butter Clams with Udon Noodles. All the food was on point and amazing. The dumplings were executed perfectly, with very clean flavors and a balanced finish. The clams were great but the miso butter was the star of the dish. the flavor was over the top and worked well with the udon. My wife had the fried rice and said it was probably the best fried rice dish she ever had. She especially enjoyed the crispy texture of the rice. Service was good, although they were paying too much attention on preparing for the next day's service instead of the current customers. I had to go find our server at one point because she forgot to bring drinks we had ordered. All in all, a great restaurant and experience. I would recommend to anyone looking for an outstanding dinner. I would just recommend not choosing the last seating so you can have the full attention of the staff.

So so so so incredibly good. The udon, salmon poke, and every one of the sushi rolls I tried were fantastic. The service was very fast, and the restaurant had a great atmosphere, a little on the loud side. I’d definitely recommend.

My husband and I came to Perry's for the Japanese breakfast and it was wonderful. They have an option of ordering a full breakfast or you can order a la carte as well. We both opted for the traditional breakfast.

It was absolutely delicious, with fish, miso soup, rice, some little light pickles, a beef stew and some sort of mushroom eggplant dish.

I highly recommend their breakfast, my only criticisms are that for a nicer place I wish they didn't use disposable wooden chopsticks and their service was a bit messy. We didn't really know who our server was and we waited quite a while to be served.

My favorite sushi place in Adams Morgan. It has a very nice rooftop space on the summer. The food was great, the service was awesome and atmosphere was lively. Ordered sushi and sashimi for two and I’m not disappointed.
Definitely included in my rotation of regular restaurants in Adams Morgan.

Adams Morgan feels like an embarrassment of hidden riches sometimes, like the low key 40 year run of Perry's which features some of the most innovative Japanese cuisine anywhere. Paired with the service by Devin in a bustling and energetic dining room, it was an incredible experience from start to finish.

We enjoyed everything we tried, there were zero disappointments on the entrees and appetizers. Some of the sushi felt a bit pedestrian, but there was plenty of strength elsewhere on the creative menu.

Asparagus & Whipped Ricotta (Ramp pistachio pesto, sesame zucchini pickles, amazake focaccia, togarashi) - superb blend of flavors and textures, one of the most memorable starters

Shrimp Katsu Burger (Deep fried shrimp patty, togarashi tartar, potato buns) - Really delicious shrimp katsu flavor, accented well with the tartar, and soft sweet potato buns.

Udon Carbonara (Sanuki-style udon, parmesan, jidori egg yolk, crispy prosciutto) - definitely one of the standouts, quite indulgent

Garlic Fried Rice (Dashi steamed Koshihikari rice, poached egg, butter
w/ pork)

Shiokoji Wagyu Steak (Aonori hash, spring green salad, Ponzu jus, chili oil) - most tender wagyu I've had in a while, and the hash was next level in terms of flavor per bite

For dessert, we loved both the Matcha & White Chocolate Tart (delicious!) and their take on the Matcha Chocolate Chip Cookie with Vanilla Ice Cream concept was a mini masterpiece.

Cocktails were also superb. Very creative and pretty well crafted, slightly on the sweeter side but within bounds to keep it balanced. We enjoyed the Rising Sun, the Dragonfly, Sweetheart, and the Cherry Bomb. All exceptional.

Last but not least, to be served by the friendly and knowledgeable manager Devin who's been there for 25 years was quite a treat and honor. What a great experience, and he was a big part of it.
