This was our second time at Matsuhisa. My wife and I liked it so much that we brought my parents who lived in Japan for a while and have high standards for sushi.

They loved every dish we tried (and so did we)! The service is excellent. Our waitress was attentive and had great suggestions for dishes and sake. The music was also not too loud which my parents very much appreciated. It's easy to have a conversation.

We'll definitely be back.

While some dishes are amazing others are a bit lackluster. Seared salmon is really good, Albacore with truffle = good. The lambchop is weird and just not very good at all. Service is excellent. I've had several Omekase menu dinners here. There is better high end sushi in Denver for the price.

Sushi Experience №11

I want to preface this review by stating that I have dined at an incredible number of tasting menus, Michelin-starred restaurants, and fine dining establishments around the world. During this particular Omakase or tasting menu experience, three things happened that I have never encountered before:
1. There was an inedible piece of fish in the second course served to her.
2. There was a bone in the third course, which cut her mouth.
3. I was interrupted while taking a bite to ask if my plate could be taken away—within three seconds of putting the bite in my mouth.

Regarding the food, the dessert was not balanced. The jelly in the tiramisu was very overpowering.

On the positive side, there were two memorable bites during the service, and the iced tea was excellent.

First time at Matsuhisa and everything was delicious! Our waiter was great and gave perfect recommendations. There were several items on the menu we didn’t get to try so we will be dining again. Yellowtail jalapeño and Black Cod are must tries, as well as their selection of nigiri/sashimi. Restaurant has two entrances, one off the road and the other in the garage if you wanna use their $7 convenient valet parking. Very similar to their Nobu restaurants if you have ever been, this place is a must try!!

I went to Matsuhisa in Denver to celebrate my wife's birthday, and it was a great experience. My wife is Japanese, and we met in Tokyo, where I lived for few years. For reference, we visited Nobu Tokyo and Itoh Dining by Nobu in Hakone in Japan. The quality and customer service is just as I remember it in Nobu Tokyo. Similar dishes with more extensive dish options friendlier for American taste palette. I would highly recommend Matsuhisa for Japanese style fine dining and sushi for special occasions. Quality, customer service, and ambiance were perfect for the evening.

It’s always a special occasion coming here. We’ve done the omakase-style or the server-guided menu several times and remain very impressed with everything. Our most memorable favorites include the black miso cod, the Aspen roll (only $22!!), tataki and the avocado crab roll. The whiskey list is fantastic too if you like Japanese, scotch or bourbon. Can’t wait to come back.

My wife and I wanted a special date night and Matsuhisa was exactly that. We were seated quickly and the whisky list was extensive. I enjoyed the Kaiyo-The Unicorn.
Our waiter was quick with a recommendation. We split the Udon Soup, and we tried a couple of specials. We had a sashimi trio (Tuna, Salmon, Whitefish) and the iced presentation was really cool.
We finished with some Mochi. This worked out well as we were not stuffed, but really satiated. The place has some amazing sushi, and we will be back!

We celebrated our 10th anniversary here with Omakase. The service was phenomenal, the atmosphere was a nice combination of upscale and casual, the presentation was phenomenal. But, it was still quite good!

I recently attended a charity gala and sat at a VIP table which was upsold in part because it would feature a five course meal from Matsuhisa. You could literally afford a down payment for the price of this table. The “five course meal” turned out to be more like five bites. We were all starving and wistfully looking at the plates of other guests the entire evening. Worse, Matsuhisa’s on-site staff was slow, unresponsive, and rude when asked if there was any more food coming. No joke: we ended up ordering Chick-Fil-A and pizza to the event. It turned out to be a funny story but if this is how Matsuhisa treats its VIPs imagine how they’ll treat you. This place will NEVER receive my business.

The food was great, it has that relax ambiance which i found very inviting. The service was “overservice”, they taking turns come and ask how you doing every 5 minutes and waiting to change out your plate as soon they see you put down your chopsticks. I find this to be very annoying, it interrupted my diner with “ can i take those plates”.

Chef Nobu has a spot in Cherry Creek and it has a strong lineup. The Black cod is exceptional and the best dish on the menu. Highly recommend the spicy tuna with crispy rice appetizer. The sushi, like most spots in Denver, was slightly underwhelming and forgettable. Will return for most shareable dishes and mains only. Expect typical higher prices for smaller portions

Visited 7 months ago

Sushi Experience №63

If you know, you know. I think this is in the top 3 sushi spots in Denver and they each differ slightly depending on what you’re interested in. Sushi Denver, Maysuhisa, and Uchi. I know this is an oversimplification, but between the three, I think Sushi Denver is the most traditional, Uchi is the most experimental/haute cuisine, and Matsuhisa is somewhere in the middle. Incredible food and service. I’ve never had anything but an omakase-like dinner and don’t see a reason to do it any different.

The black cod is a signature dish for good reason. The Maguro and Copper River salmon are both outstanding. The seared albacore sashimi with miso crunch and shaved truffle with ponzu should not be missed either.

With all of the outstanding sushi options, I’m disinclined to order the wagyu or even the lamb (as much as I LOVE it) just because the flavors are so strong compared to the sushi and sashimi, but they are outstanding if that’s your preference.

It pains me greatly to write a non-fabulous review of Matsuhisa, as I have raved about it so many times to anyone who would listen, but unfortunately our last visit left a bad taste in our mouths. We have always done the Omakase, and the previous times we have come the food has been spectacular, and the service even more so. This time, we again opted for the Omakase only this time our waitress told us we couldn’t submit any preferences, the chef gives us what he wants and would only avoid allergies. This was strange because prior to this visit we were able to put in a few tastes we like and do not like to tailor the experience a little. We didn’t really mind because every time we have come, we have LOVED every dish, so we weren’t super worried. The first dish comes out and it’s a salad hand wrap that was absolutely divine, then a 3 fish sashimi that was also amazing, after that there was only one other course we really liked, and the rest was just okay. At any other restaurant I wouldn’t be too upset, but it was not on par with the price and certainly nowhere close to the quality of our previous visits. Our waitress did not come over very often (the girl and guy delivering our dishes were more helpful than the waitress) and when she did come over, she would ask how everything was and then quickly walk away before we could order more drinks or ask for anything. The final dish before dessert was a veggie puree foie gras and it was absolutely disgusting. As someone who loves foie gras I was very excited, but after one bite I couldn’t stomach eating any more. The Foie Gras itself was similar consistency to a lump of spam, and the veggie puree was bland with an odd taste. Not a single person at our table took more than one bite and even our waitress commented that when she cleared the plates. We expressed we did not like it at all and she just brushed it off and walked away. We all kind of assumed she would offer something, but then our dessert came out and at that point it seemed onerous to bring it back up (the dessert was very good though). Overall, the experience was super upsetting as we live in MD but come to visit our CO friends regularly and Matsuhisa is always on our list. It is unlikely we will ever be back but if we do, I don’t think any of us will ever want to do the Omakase again which makes me so sad and is truly a shame.

I have been wanting to come here for awhile and I was able to finally. I will start off with saying the service is here is amazing! I had Nick and he explained things perfectly! He went over the menu and gave excellent recommendations. As many others said here the portion sizes were astronomically small. I will say that this would be an amazing culinary experience but 100% not a place to have a fulfilling meal without paying $150 a person.

We started off with the Lobster tacos and ordered 3 with each being maybe 2in in length. They cost $19 each which was crazy! I could tell the lobster was fresh but honestly the flavour was lacking. We also ordered the Gyoza and got three for $13 each and it was amazing! The three of us ordered the Maine Lobster and Palm Hearts which was $50 and was about half a cup of food, the fillet which was marinated in teriyaki on a bed of vegetables was the largest portion of the lot with a 6oz filet and LOADS of amazing veggies, finally a spicy salmon roll that was not on the menu however they specially made it for my friend which measured about .25in in diameter that cost $22. We all also ordered desert the lava cake and ice cream, sorbet and ice cream by itself. These each cost about $15 and were probably the best part of the entire night.

Overall, again the experience would have been a great place to taste great food then go across the street for a full meal. The service and staff were amazing and I can't express that enough!

It was my first and groups first time dining here for a graduation celebration. I expected the cost of each dish to be pretty expensive but was taken aback by the portion sizes of everything. Now I understand that this is fine dining but was not expecting the pricing of things on the menu to be per piece.. I have been to places that spent the time to go over the menu, recommend dishes or explained how things worked if it was our first time dining there. We felt we were searching for our main server many times to place an order, it was very chaotic with the many servers that were bringing our plates and taking our plates. I would give this place a try again if I want to experience the culinary tastes but I would not come here again if I was hungry, def not a place to fill your tummies for the price you are paying. The food was good but not worth what was paid. Overall, if you want the fine dining food, and a bit of crammed space between tables, try it out for yourselves. I much would spend the money I spent here at other local places with higher return in portion sizes such as Sushi Den for example.

A few days ago, we visited here. We really love Japanese food, and we like Nobu in LA. The place here in Denver wasn't as good as expected, but overall, it was okay. However, there were some shortcomings in the service system. Most of the waitresses and waiters were friendly. It's not that they weren't friendly. But at this fine restaurant, the assigned server didn't seem to have enough time, appearing busy or rushing in the middle of talking. And there were three people bringing food, and three people clearing tables, all different, which was confusing. Sometimes, the person bringing the food wasn't the assigned server, so we ended up eating without knowing what the food was. Is it my greed to expect this kind of service for a dinner that cost over $200 per person? It's questionable.

As a resident of the building, we have spent thousands of dollars at Matsuhisa. And up until the last visit we were very pleased overall. Although the quality on some items declined slightly, and the portions appear smaller, there was overall satisfaction.

That said, my last visit a few weeks ago was extremely disappointing. For the first time when sitting at the bar, a place I have sat at dozens of times, I was told I would be displaced if I was not on the wait list; even though the bar was not full! First time ever sitting at 2 empty seats, I get told that right off the bat. The bartenders there should have remembered I am a frequent customer who has always been kind and generous with tips. But they disregarded my existence, and I decided to close my tab after one round of drinks.

Then, I thought, hmmm... why I don't I get on the wait list for the bar. I tell the manager I would like to get on the wait list for the bar, and sure enough, we got seated.... AT THE BAR! It may be some semantical rule they had, but it was a slower Tuesday night, and it was disappointing to get treated that way. The servers treated my rudely thereon after; but I could not help but laugh at how less and less crowded the bar got to where there were 6 seats in a row moments after we got "off the wait list." The manager was so rude and disrespectful and I was being kind the whole time in explaining how after 20+ visits I had never been treated so rudely. He must have been new.

The sushi is good but does not meet the value of the pricing. Unless you are getting all the top level orders off the special menu, you are getting AVERAGE sushi. Smaller rolls overall, the lamb has dropped, but I will say drinks are always SUPERB. There is one really nice bartender there but the other guys who are normally there were just simply out of line. There are plenty of excellent sushi places to go to such as Sushi Den (which is much more modern and pleasing inside, and Hapa to name a couple. These places use more fish in their rolls, cost a lot less, and they don't have the arrogance that precedes Matsu. I think Matsu had an overhaul with their chefs, and are maybe relying on the name and celeb status. But if it was so good, where's the Michelin Star???

Be smart with your money. You'll thank your wallet!

If it weren’t for the food, I would give one star. The food is outstanding but the service at the bar is really hit and miss depending on the bartenders moods. Multiple times they’ve told us they’re comping us something but they still leave the charge on the final bill and who has the energy to point out they charged you for things they said was on the house. It’s awkward. And there’s one bartender who always is grumpy and mopey, he needs to go. It’s an upscale restaurant with amazing food, the service needs to step it up with consistency and attitude.

Visited a year ago

Sushi Experience №113

First off, as expected the food was great! I would give it 5 stars if I was able to even enjoy it. So they let us book a 9:30pm reservation, when we sat down they told us the kitchen will close in 20 minutes? So they rushed the hell out of us and we had to quickly scarf our food down. This is a place where the average dine time is around 2 hours. So if you can’t serve food past 9:30 then don’t allow people to book a reservation at that time! This was for a 30th bday, so a VERY special occasion, and this was my very first time here. And unfortunately this just has to be my first time dining experience.

UPDATE: they still have never even offered to remedy the situation. I will literally never be back.

Really cool experience and great staff to help you along the way. The sushi was tasty the caviar was good and the dessert was worth it! We also tried the beef skewers and the scallops if you had to pick, go for the scallops.

We always enjoy the fantastic food and service at Matsuhisa. Have been to the Denver location many times and never been disappointed. It’s a bit pricey but worth it.

Some of the best food and service I have ever experienced! If and when you go to Matsuhisa, ask for Hannah G! She's incredibly nice and extremely knowledgeable about the menu. She helped us order the perfect slate of dishes, and thanks to her, we had an excellent evening. I'll be back!

I recently had the pleasure of dining here and I must say that our waitress truly made my experience exceptional. From the moment I sat down, Jenna's warm and welcoming demeanor set the tone for a delightful evening.

Jenna's knowledge and passion for sushi were evident as she guided me through the menu, providing insightful recommendations based on my preferences. Her expertise not only enhanced my dining choices but also made me feel confident in trying new and exciting dishes.

The best high-end sushi in Denver. Amazing, high-quality food and huge menu. I recommend asking your server to pick some menu items for you. They’ve never stirred us wrong!

It breaks my heart to be posting this. My wife and I come to Matsuhisa frequently, 1-2 times a month. It’s our favorite place to eat. We went last night 12/4 at 7pm. About 12 hours after eating we both became very ill. Vomiting, diarrhea, chills, fatigue, and very achy. We reported it to Denver County Health Department this afternoon. If there is anyone else please leave a review or report it so they can investigate if it is food poisoning. Thanks.

A bit disappointed. We’ve been trying to find a nice sushi place here. Matsuhisa came well recommended. The nigiris come fresh but bland and without garnish. Where is the flavor???

The exception was the ootoro which was great.

The black cod was nothing special…I don’t understand the hype. For me it was like a teriyaki fish. Good but not something I would go out of my way to order again.

The hamachi sashimi had great flavor but lacked finesse in the way it was cut. Felt a little clumsy.

Spicy tuna crispy rice was tasty but seemed overpriced and more of a “casual” dish than one at a high end sushi place.

We ordered the two off menu rolls because we were hungry and the nigiris weren’t cutting it. They were tasty (new salmon roll and tiradito roll) but if I wanted good rolls, I could get them at a casual sushi place. I come to nice sushi places for the nigiri.

Atmosphere and service however was great. So if you are looking for a nice restaurant experience and having a good time without worrying too much about the food you’re getting, I would recommend this place.

Absolutely AMAZING sushi place!!! Eric was our server. We looked over at the next person's food and asked what it was and Eric explained it was a secret item menu! The shisihito peppers were excellent. All of their dishes are shareable. I really loved the flavors. They all complemented each other. For dessert, i made a comment i was lactose intolerant and Eric said they could swap the ice cream for sorbet. Talk about excellent service!!!! ❤️

UPDATE 11/30/23 - this place is STILL delicious!! There is an off menu menu, so definitely ask about the items on that menu. Their wine selection seems to have grown! I tried the scallops and wild mushroom salad and it was delicious! Got the shishito peppers again! Tried the mango-passionfruit sorbet and it was so good. It's less busy during the week and much easier to get a reservation than the weekends.

Absolutely phenomenal dining experience and food. The ambience and atmosphere is well crafted, though it is very open and can get noisy.
Parking around the restaurant is not easy, but there is a valet option. We ordered some chef inspired random sushi dishes that were delicious to say the least.

This is probably one of the best restaurants in Denver, if not the number 1 restaurant. The menu is incredible and has so much flexibility to get any portion size desired. The food is truly incredible, every bit of every dish was absolutely to die for. The best dishes we had were the Black Cod with Su Miso and the Lamb Chop with Anticucho. Our server Jeremy was super friendly and knowledgeable and provided fantastic recommendations and guidance with the menu which helped make the meal even more enjoyable. If you want to experience an amazing meal for a special occasion or just to treat yourself or a loved one, Matsuhisa is a fabulous choice. I will be returning as soon as I can.

Everything was perfect! Being from Chicago has been challenging to find really tasty food in Denver. Tried some bib gourmand recommendations and was disappointed with the food quality, service, and experience. I was starting to think my standards were too high. If I'm shelling out I want to be wowed. Thankfully came across Matsuhisa and was like Nobu in Denver? I've been to Nobu 57 in NYC and was excited to try the Denver location. It did not disappoint, the service was top notch, very attentive and on a random Tuesday night no less. Water constantly refilled, cutlery replaced, and plates refreshed without asking. The cocktails were perfectly balanced and delicious. All the food was delectable and really reminded me of what I am used to back home. The tacos were fun and seasoned really well. Also if you have room for dessert the rice pudding is amazing, very delicate balance of ice cream, fruit, and crumble. If you are visiting Denver from Chicago and struggling to find a good restaurant this will hit the spot.

The service is underwhelming to say the least. We chose this restaurant because of the wine list and the reputation, big mistake! When looking to dine out you would have better service at a Texas Roadhouse, it’s unfortunate but the reality having had the same experience multiple times in a row. I wish the same attention to detail went into the front of house as the back!

We don't do a lot of fine dining, and when we do we want this kind of experience. Impeccable service with fantastic suggestions and dish selection. Attention to details from the kitchen to the table.

I’ve lived and traveled globally and have eaten at world class restaurants all over, and I have to say that my meal at Matsuhisa was one of, if not the best I’ve had. We asked our waiter to build a meal and cocktail experience for our table of 6. What ensued was interesting, delicious, fun, and genuinely inspired. We had out of town guests joining us for my husband’s 40th, and we were all completely awe struck by the end of our experience. Kudos to the chefs, wait staff, and bar team for making a beautiful and memorable night. We will definitely be back.

I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to eat real tasty seafood, who works hard to make every dollar in their pocket, or whoever understand the name “Nobu” doesn’t equal to good food.
I’d recommend this restaurant to someone who has too much money to waste, who’s never been to the coast and tasted fresh fish from the water, who wants to impress their date with a fancy entitled restaurant brand.

My sushi experience has been in Vancouver, Hawaii, California, Seattle, Chicago, SF, and LA. For Denver, people usually compare Matsuhisa with Sushi Den. Matsuhisa is also Ko mostly casual in atmosphere and dress. Service was great. Food came out quick. Fish was very fresh and tasty. To compare with the Den, it has similar prices and a smaller selection of rolls. But the Nigiri and sashimii were better than the Den. But the Den has more creative roll combos. Def try the crispy rice with spicy tuna tartar.

We had arrived later then our reservation but the service was outstanding. Julian the bartender was great and very knowledgeable. But the food was not fresh and the overall feeling when I left was a upset stomach that made me nauseous and $200 bill on top of that made it even more nauseating. The drinks were the only thing I could say were amazing. But $200 for stomach ache and loud drunk atmosphere was not worth the money. There are lots of good reviews but the food I would not eat there again.
