Great food, chill atmosphere complemented by a saltwater tank as decor. We arrived for happy hour, and enjoyed the pork belly (slow braised beef with Stilton cheese, eel sauce, and shaved red onion, amazing!!) and steamed shumai appetizers.
The Himalayan roll with spicy scallops was great & not overly spicy. The yellow tail was exquisite.
Our server Wyatt took excellent care of us. This was our 2nd time here, we’ll definitely be back next time we return to Boulder!

Hands down the best sushi I have ever had. Cody our sushi chef was masterful. The depth of taste and flavor was unmatched. The Ottoro was like butter. Okay I found a word, SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPEALADOCIOUS!

Really nice atmosphere. Sat at the sushi bar and had a really nice solo meal. Happy hour prices are great, otherwise a bit pricey. I ordered two apps, a hand roll, a specialty roll, and a drink - about $60 with tip. Make sure to order a lot, as the portions are small. Overall I left pretty satisfied but I would recommend coming for a date or an occasion to take advantage of the ambiance.

Best sushi we’ve had hands down. They have great specialty rolls that actually taste like they care about what’s going into it vs. just throwing in a bunch of random ingredients. Sushi bar was great, chefs were very nice and very helpful when it came to making sure we steered clear of gluten for allergy reasons. Everything was phenomenal.

Had an incredible dining experience at Japango thanks to our server, Jordan. In all our visits (and there have been many—probably close to 50), Jordan stands out as the best we’ve ever had. From the moment he greeted us, he was warm and genuinely friendly, making us feel at home right away. He knew the menu inside and out, guiding us with perfect recommendations and sharing detailed knowledge about the dishes and wines, which made our experience so much more enjoyable. His attentiveness was flawless without ever feeling intrusive. We’ve always loved Japango, but having Jordan as our server took it to a whole new level. If you go, make sure to ask for him—you won’t regret it!

We drove an hour from Littleton to try this restaurant and we were not disappointed! Jordan was out server and he was fantastic. Super patient and willing to answer all of our questions. The menu had some great choices and I loved all of the non-alcoholic drink options. Their yellowtail nigiri is a must-have. We'll definitely be back!

Great date spot, nice atmosphere, good service, and excellent food. On the busy Pearl St mall, with nice outdoor seating when the weather cooperates. Extremely expensive, though.

Went for dinner for the first time last night cause we heard from our friends that this place was good for a date night—it ended to be very disappointing.
We had the cod, which was recommended by our server and honestly very good. But the shumai and gyoza were atrocious at $15 a plate. Tasted worse than Trader Joe’s. The Manchu jalapeño plate looked like it had been chewed on before it got to the table. The drink menu was creative and all seemed really tasty; the rolls were okay—expensive— but I suppose that’s in-line with mall sushi in Boulder.
The worst part of our night wasn’t actually the pesky flies surrounding the food, though; my date and I kept getting interrupted by a pesky manager coming to our table and the ones next to us. We weren’t able to enjoy our conversation or food. He had the most obnoxious laugh. The table next to us who said they come to have dinner often told us it that this was unusual.
Server was a highlight but they also came to our table 9 times (we counted) during the night. Lots of interruption between management and staff. Felt like we talked to staff more than to each other. Food was mostly a miss. I did enjoy the Himalayan. Our date just felt ruined by the manager. Willing to give the place another try. Maybe it was an off night.

Natalie was amazing. I came in a few nights ago and told her about my chicken/chicken egg and mushroom allergy and she was SO on top of me. We were at a table of about ten and even then she saved my bacon a couple of times. Thank you so much Natalie! I've never had a waiter or waitress so attentive to my allergies and I really appreciated it! Also, I never knew fake crab had egg in it, so now I know to watch out for that.

Last night we gorged ourselves on a cornucopia of sushi and cocktails at Japango sushi restaurant in Boulder on Pearl St. Our waiter was indubitable Jordan V. who could not have been more professional, helpful, accommodating, and charming. We required a constant flow of ginger and ponzu sauce and Jordan was there before we depleted our supply.
His sushi and liquor recommendations were spot on and much appreciated as there is a plethora of delicious possibilities to order from the menu, it’s nice to have some guidance. The ambiance was chill and intimate and the service seamless. We are rabid fans of both the restaurant and Jordan and will surely be back soon to again sit in his section.

Stopped here for lunch without a reservation on a Saturday game day. Sushi was delish. Def recommend the tempura battered rice roll with tuna. We also enjoyed a roll with truffle honey, and a fatty king salmon nigiri. So good.
Miso soup was delish too. Sometimes they can be so basic but this one was super flavorful. Great service, nice atmosphere.

Back in February, my partner and I happened onto Japango while visiting Boulder for the first time. We intended to stop for one drink and one roll, and wound up not being able to tear ourselves away. The shishito pepper appetizer, the cocktails, the roll that we wound up ordering 3 times and the service were all incredible. We found ourselves back in the area a couple weeks ago, and knew we had to go back. This time we sat inside, and we were pleased to find out everything was as wonderful as we remembered. Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu and suggested her favorites. We made our way through 4 rolls and every one was better than the last. Fresh, creative flavors, great portions - everything was perfect. Am I gushing? We'll be back again!

PLEASE BE BETTER! I know you can!
I am a Boulder native. I was born here and I am sad to say its changed from being the Professional Welcoming Diverse comunity that it used to be. My experience shows that Japango and its owner must embrace Professionalism, Kindness and Authenticity if they are to really achieve any meaningful goal. This is just the humble opinion of a local.
I am writing a review for July 1st of 2023 at approx: 2:00 PM. Sat at the large diagonal table with small steps around it, located near the bar.
The place is nice. The service needs work, as the servers were in fact racist. As a world traveler, the level of discrimination we experienced at this "Japango" eatery in my hometown of Boulder, far exceeded any discrimination experienced elsewhere.
We were denied water for over 1 hr. I had to go back and beg multiple servers for water for our 7 person group. One replied: "that is not my table", as they stood at a nearby table resting. As a european-american family walked in, they sat them, brought them a water jug, food, the bill, etc. And we still had no water. The only reason we stayed after an hour was because we had just completed an exhausting hike and also had a guest from out of town. The restaurant was not full and there were servers shooting-the-breeze and ever so often passing a silent but deep and condescending stare at us. No words, just staring. It was very very weird. We were polite and kind with everyone. We were not disruptive nor loud at any point. We were waiting for service. The employees and the manager's behaviour on the otherhand was unfortunately not to standard of restaurateur etiquette.
I proceeeded to look for a new person as multiple waitresses had already decided they would rather ignore us.
The manager came out and I tried asking him for water. He visibly ignored me and made a sour face.
I would describe their behavior as unprofessional in the purest sense. Most of us are locally born Mexican-Americans with professional backgrounds.
Apparently it seems our race created a drift for the uneducated staff for some strange reason. You can't always expect people to have intelligence. Some people choose to be narrow-minded and chauvinistic as their way of life.
Finally after waiting for the waitress to clean-up the table next to us, I decided to confront the initial waitress one last time and ask her if she could either take our order or bring us some one that could. She then shrugged and reluctantly began taking our order and only gave each one a single cup of water (no jug).
We have been to Japan multiple times and eaten in Japan. We also have many Japanese friends who have had us over for dinner many times. One of my Mexican friends is also fluent in Japanese. We came to enjoy an authentic meal (as the reviews are high).
I asked the waitress for Furikake. She didn't even know what it was and then she lied about it and brought me a completely different item.
We waited another hour for our food. We had some appetizers. The Edamame was ok.
As for the food, the dishes could use a little more seasoning.
I had to ask for Soy Sauce. However the waitress had now understood her job and brought out what needed to be brought out.
I was glad about the ku-cha 苦茶 tea selections though 👌 and about the opportunity to try some Sushi at a new place.
My Rating:
Service: 0/10 🤡
(worst most discriminatory service in my life + The owner: PLEASE BE BETTER! I know you can!)
Location: 7/10 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (very nice/cozy building)
Food: 6/10 ⭐️⭐️

Japango has been the go to place for a decade now and never disappointing. The food is always amazing as well as the service. The drinks are next level. Jake just created a new drink to the menu called The Long Shot pilot and it’s a work of art. It’s a whiskey based cocktail with earl grey infused along with Pliny the Edler “simple syrup”. There are so many pieces to this drink that fit together so perfectly. Such a well balanced drink that I couldn’t order anything else for the rest of the night. Thank you japango for never letting us down on your service and the overall experience. See you soon!

Japango is a luxurious experience that can also cater to the more casual sushi enjoyers. The ambiance is very moody and sophisticated no matter the time of day which is well complemented by the wait staff who show knowledge of the menu and drinks while also having a social personality. Love to come here on Mondays for their all day happy hour. The drinks are outrageously priced but you should be spending your money on the food anyway because it is high quality and fresh. A favorite in Boulder.

Food was pretty good overall but menu was a little confusing. I hope the staff reads this review, so if you work here, please repeat after me: It is not the customer's fault that even though we have *three* hostesses on staff on a moderately busy week night *we should not stack the seating of tables to a point where three sushi rolls takes 55 minutes to arrive*
There is no point of a reservation system if your staff cannot handle four walk-ins (2 at bar, 2 at tables) in a half-full restaurant.

Lovely place for some sushi or other tasty Asian foods. The mackerel had a lovely crispy skin without drying the meat. The sushi was perfect temperature and texture.
Deserts are delicious with the bento box desert being a sampler of their popular deserts. Loved the mochi ice cream with great tasting options like carrot cake.

I came here with a company card totally prepare to splurge. I ordered three appetizers, a sushi roll, and a soda. I walked out of the restaurant barely paying $30. The food was incredible, so they must not realize how much they’re undercharging for it. I’d definitely recommend coming before they realize and bring the prices up to where they should be.

Supremely disappointing experience. We came here to celebrate Father’s Day all having had good experiences with Japango prior.
There were flies buzzing around our table for the entire meal; I would be willing to bet this restaurant hasn’t had a proper cleaning in years, if ever. The appetizers came out quickly and were delicious, but our party was so grossed out by the bugs we couldn’t really enjoy our food… It was all downhill from there.
Our food took over an hour to come out, and when we asked our server about it, he sent a “manager” over. This individual could not have been more unprofessional, and only made the entire experience that much worse. Whoever this “manager” was had no interest in retaining our business, and if he did, he couldn’t have been more smarmy, rude and condescending.
Then, the food came out; they got our order wrong on top of everything. We had planned to order more food after the first round came but instead we left hungry and went to Shake Shack; thank God for that!
Never again.

Although, I couldn’t eat there today, I was interested in a future date soon. I meet two kind and welcoming young ladies who offered me a menu to take home. I also asked for some advice, what would be good starters for beginners. One of the ladies, Sammy graciously showed me some good recommendations!

I went here because of all the star rating. For the price of their sushi, I thought I would be served with top notch highest quality type of sushi. But as my orders were served, I realized I'm paying for the cost of transporting fish to Boulder.
The sushis reminded me of those prepacked sushis one can get in a supermarket- The rice texture, the amount of ingredients. I'm happy to pay for great sushi but sadly I left disappointed.
I just can't connect the price to the quality.

Great location and ambiance. Very good service. However, the food was not as good as I expected. The miso soup had just too much salt. The dipping sauce for the tempura was very weak, had no taste... almost felt like I was dipping in water. The salmon teriyaki was just average. The sticky rice wasn't sticky at all. A little disappointed.

Life happens even to the best of us, and how one reacts to a “situation” is actually more telling about the true character of a place than simple smooth sailing. We had a little incident where the kitchen left in a little jalapeño in my daughter’s roll - it resulted in my kid crying in pain from it. Our waitress noticed immediately and moved swiftly to help alleviate the burn and calm her down. The manager also came out to apologize and made sure we were well taken care of. In the end our kid was back to her happy self in no time, giggling and laughing, ending dinner on a good note. Japango has been our go to sushi joint in Boulder for a few years now. In all this time, after countless visits, this is the first “issue” we’ve ever had. While this might have technically broken their otherwise perfect record for us, how well the staff and team all addressed the issue actually built our confidence in the team. I mention this as a positive example of a place well run. We’ll continue to be back for sure. Thanks for a great dinner!

I was a little alarmed to discover that some of the sashimis have green "wasabi" horseradish IN them in addition to on the side - it was tasty but I would've liked a warning? Decent fish quality for being in a landlocked state though, overall very impressed.

I got the Loch Ness roll and the mile high tofu- my sister got a Philly roll. When I tell you the service and food were top tier! I don’t live in Boulder, so the staff being so aware and accommodating of vegan diets was so refreshing. Any question I had was answered with confidence and I didn’t feel like I had to worry if something wasn’t vegan. The tofu was honestly some of the best I’ve ever had. The inside was beautiful, and the hostess was very kind. We sat down and the waiter came over telling what not to order. He was very over bearing going through the entire menu, circling and crossing items off. He questioned my drink order. We got the pork belly appetizer. It couldn’t have been more than 1oz of meat and it was cold when it hit the table. The quail egg nigiri was ok. The sushi was fine. Between the egregious
service and horrible cold food we will not be coming back. Plenty of better sushi restaurants in Boulder if you need to get your fix.

The Jasmin tea was burned and over steeped. Which tastes bitter and burnt.
Our rolls looked great.
The rice to fish ratio is perfect. I had a hand roll with eel. It was lovely. I also had a cooked tempura eel roll. Yum!
Never ever going to eat raw sushi here again. I haven't had raw fish ever in Colorado. (Five plus years living here) I had to detox from parasites that had gotten me very sick. You are taking a risk eating raw fish in the mountains where the fish is not always the catch of the day! That was my bad I knew better than to eat raw fish!
Our server was accommodating when we needed something and also learned about the delicate Jasmin Tea brewing process.
We spent at least $300 on our meal.
This is a place for ambiance at night because darkness hides the weird deco and unfinished parts of the building
Love the jelly fish tank. It reminds me of Vegas
But we are in Colorado so no more raw fish eating for me. I will not tell you what we ordered that made us all get sick with parasites. Just so t eat raw fish from the ocean in the mountains....

I think this place is doing too much with its decor to compensate the fact that the food is lackluster. Sure it’s sophisticated and spacious and there’s couches for having a drink or two, but this just tells me that they’re not really giving the food much thought. It’s way overpriced for a few slices of fish that aren’t even fresh. All of mine was dry and one even looked like it was falling apart, a sign that it was not fresh. Happy hour in fact won’t save you tons of money. For what they’re charging, I can get better quality stuff in the area, or I could get a lot more portion for the same type of quality in the area for cheaper. The plates they use also don’t measure up to this place’s apparent sophistication. It’s plain white ceramic that had scratches on them. In any case, I won’t come back again and don’t recommend people to try it. Whoever thinks this place is good must have never had real good sushi. Sorry but not sorry. Source? Me, someone who’s lived in coastal cities for almost my entire life and know what fresh sashimi tastes like. That is how much I think this food is too underwhelming for what they’re visually trying to achieve with the price point and atmosphere. Honestly, if one really wants to try a good Japanese restaurant with good atmosphere, there are plenty of options in Denver, or go across the street to Izakaya Amu, which is actually the same price point. The only reason I did not give a 1 star is because service is not unfriendly. Would’ve been a 3 star if it weren’t for the ridiculous price point and under delivery.

We came here for my husbands birthday and what a mistake. Covid is over and we were told because we didn’t have a reservation we had to sit in the back out by the alley and suck cigarette smoke for the whole meal. I have eaten sushi all over the world including Japan. I love when some college kid thinks they know more about sushi and on top of that can’t even put in what I marked on the menu. Hey let’s get into this review, the food! A version of spicy lobster tempura at $18 resembles deep fried mushrooms down at your local sports pub and tossed in some kind of weird sauce that was supposed to bring the heat with lava in the name but in the end soggy and just really a waste of lobster because you can’t even taste the lobster. My husband ordered a cactus roll which tasted like a bunch of fish chopped up and fried or baked in a wonton with jalapeño and covered in eel sauce was seriously like eating a big chunk of paste. Next was supposed to be a “grilled” scallop mixed with mayonnaise and tobiko just thrown together with raw scallop and mayo. We ordered my daughter the children’s beef teriyaki plate which showed up cold with some kind of hacked up veggies and a slice of shriveled cabbage. Then to top it off was charged for each glass of iced green tea which was bitter and tasteless. Seriously for $200 dollars and resembling a knock off sushi place in the mall, I will NEVER come back here.

Been a go to Sushi place for years. El Corazon roll is a unique treat. Can't go wrong with the basic Cali roll either. Trendy and hip atmosphere.

Good sushi and noodle dish options. Ramen was good. Limited options for diners with allergies. Gluten-free bento box was very poor consisting largely of raw kale.

Waited 30 minutes past pick up (ordered food at 3:15 — not a busy time) and the food looks terrible. Way overpriced. Got 5 sushi rolls and they fit in a single to go container.

Nice ambiance and really good service. However, like many other reviews mentioned, the portions are very very small. When the portions are small, I’m hoping the taste makes up for it. The spider roll was not that great. I order this roll everywhere so I think I can give it a fair review.
However, I do want to mention that the miso soup is the best I’ve ever had. I just ordered it because I wanted something hot. The calamari with mushroom was also pretty good.

No place is like Japango’s in CO! We were having happy hour and decided to bring home dinner, it’s a long story, but I got home and noticed we were missing my mother in-laws dinner! I called, spoke to a manager and the next thing I knew, they were driving it out to me - AMAZING! The entire experience there is AWESOME.
Thank you Japango’s for stepping up and going to great lengthens to keep your community happy!

Awesome food and staff that goes over the top to deliver a 5 star service! Evelyn was so friendly when our order was not 100% correct and even complemented my fiance and I after our meal was done - she wrote "thank you!" on our receipt too. it's little things like that make the experience so much better
The ambiance of the restaurant is awesome too; very intimate lighting and a super rad jellyfish tank in the dining area

A great sushi place that maintained it's friendly atmosphere after their expansion. Pro Tip: Watching a Bronco game there is awesome, the staff are engaging, the TVs are big, and the drink recommendations are spot on.

You should eat here! Very vegan friendly - they have a vegan version of the miso soup if you ask for it (one of the best I've ever had). They also have quite a number of simple rolls - the tempura sweet potato is my favorite - to more complex ones, like the Loch Ness (that has a whole bunch of stuff in it).
I I took one star off because I wish they had sushi that offered more vegan protein - whether that was some kind of spicy or teriyaki tempeh or a vegan "meat". I think that would make a $$$ meal feel a more substantial than just having to eat vegetables and mushrooms, but it is what it is. Their vegan and vegetarian options are generally pretty good.

Sushi was fresh and just melted on your palate. Flavors were amazing together.

Stopped by for First Bite restaurant week.
The first bite menu consisted of 3 pieces of sushi. We didn't realize that it was only going to be 3 pieces, and for $30 it was way more than I'd ever knowingly pay. However, no denying they were delicious. Would have been nice if the waitress called that out but wasn't necessarily expected of her.
In addition we ordered basic yellowtail rolls and some specialty spicy shrimp rolls (which summed up to be cheaper than the prior 3). Both were good, I especially liked the shrimp one.
Ultimately rating on this experience alone, the value was not there so I'll go with 3 stars.
However, next time I think I could make it a 4 star experience.

Good atmosphere only got better. All cuts beautifully prepared and Boulder fresh, except ikura tasted old. Not bad caviar (or it wouldn't have eaten it), just getting stale & mushy means chef should have caught it and opened fresh-or stocked better. They were also out of silver needle tea.

Delicious, inventive, fresh, complex - I mean, seriously - what else could you ask for in food? Service (by Kelly) was first class with solid menu recommendations and attentiveness. The place was hopping on a Tuesday night, so I'm thinking I am not alone in my opinion. Definitely a place to check out!
-- oh, the Serrano Splash cocktail was fantastic!

Stopped here for lunch while visiting Boulder with my wife and kids. It has an upscale yet casual vibe. It was busy, but not overly so, and we were seated right away. Really fantastic service. Our server was friendly, prompt, and helpful. The kitchen was fast. Great cocktail menu too. I'll return next time I'm in town.

But it’s very nice inside also. I thought the sushi and negimaki was good but and it was excellent.

Can't speak on food but after we were sat we weren't helped for 25 minutes and we just decided to try another restaurant.

I’ve lived in Boudler a year and haven’t found my favorite reasonably priced sushi restaurant, until now! I came for lunch and ordered the Nigiri 🍣 + California sushi plate. Came with soup, High quality fish, and great service. The indoor atmosphere would be lovey for a romantic date night, and the outdoors was great for a summer lunch.

A fun Japanese restaurant on Pearl street.
They have a whole bunch of tables outside if you like people watching. But it’s very nice inside also.
I thought the sushi and negimaki was good but I didn’t think it was excellent. Not sure why but it just lacked flavor.
But a fun place to hang and enjoy the vibe.

I ordered food, but I've never got my rice for "dinner plate", and they served it for me "appetizer plate" instead of "dinner plate", sorry I didn't like your food, not the flavor at all... . Actually,my husband said that I cooked better than you guys, and you charge too much for your plates... It was my 1st and last time in your place! I've never recommended this place!

Even for sushi, this place is more expensive than it should be. My cocktail was good, but not worth $22.
Sushi was just ok. The brussel sprouts were good, but too salty (miso was also way salty). Some of the dishes were presented nicely, but others looked like nobody cares.
Service was exceptionally slow. There were periods of 10-15 minutes where we sat around with no food and no drinks because we were waiting for our server.
And there were so many gnats. They said they've been having problems with them this summer, and obviously they haven't found a solution.
There are better places to get sushi, especially in Boulder.

Rolls and sushi were good, but not exceptional, especially for the price. Dessert was though, as was a cocktail. Attentive waitstaff and a cosy atmosphere made the experience comfortable and worth a recommendation

Unfortunately, we had to wait for 45 minutes from the time we ordered the food to getting it. The sushi order that was the main lunch for one of us was served about 15 minutes before the other meals were served. This is unprofessional. The food was ok, but nothing special, especially the sushi. Udon is not always a soup, so when it is under the ‘Entree’, you should add the word soup on the menu. It was 98F outside (we were sitting outside), so ordering hot soup on a day like this is less than ideal. The waitress was great, none of this was her fault.

Sat for 5-10 minutes and was not given a menu. Two white girls sat next to me and were immediately helped. For a Japanese restaurant all the staff is white and seemed uninterested in serving an Asian customer?
Happy hour deals are the only reason I stayed.

Japango is my go-to Boulder sushi spot. Freshness is their #1 priority. Creative rolls, very tasty sushi. Great location On the Pearl Street Mall

The food are way over priced. The $42/each Unagi Don tastes just same as everywhere else.

I loved this place, but my wallet's not as much of a fan. You get what you pay for and here, the classics are well-made and there are also innovations worth trying, but the portions can be small and costly. My family of 3 spent about $200 and if we had decided to splurge, get drinks and not worry about prices, we could have probably spent around $500.
