I don’t know why my friends keep dragging me to sugar fish when there are sooo many better sushi spots near by. The ambience is nice, but the servers are a bit rude. The food like all my other sugar fish reviews is just okay. Nothing to write home about, but at least it’s consistent throughout all of their locations.
If you don’t ever want your mind blown , come to sugar fish.

Very little selection. No hot sake. No soy paper for the sushi. The sushi we ate had no taste. I would effectively call this restaurant chain the “Denny’s of the sushi world.”

I come here every time I visit my family who live walking distance from this town center. There is usually a wait but you can shop or relax in the courtyard space. I've never had a bad meal. It's a very limited menu (not your typical sushi restaurant). It's sort of a flight of sushi is the best way I can describe it. I usually get the The Nozawa Trust Me. I don't care for salmon and they always swap it out for me free of charge. Their toro is amazing. Sometimes they have specials (one of the times I went they had monkfish liver which i had to try). The saki options are solid, we always find one we enjoy. The space is very small, there is limited bar seating. Always a great time and I keep coming back!

Expensive and tasty, but the service is a big, fat minus of this establishment. I had to wait 50 minutes for my order and it was only one of the plates. Each subsequent one was brought with an interval of 10-15 minutes from the previous one, although everything was ordered at the same time. My husband and I left hungry, as we aimed to taste what we ordered first and order what we liked the most, but the wait overcame all desires. + fi service, taxes and some unknown establishment fee essentially almost corresponded to the cost of the order...

It's only takeout now due to covid but the sushi is well packed and there are instructions for which sauce to use with which fish. Excellent sushi as always and the rice is perfect. Update 9/2024 Sugarfish has moved to the Sportsman's Lodge shops. Parking can be hectic but you get 90 mins free parking no validation needed. Sugarfish adds a 16% charge to their bill but does not allow tipping.

tbh, i hadn't heard of this place prior to being invited by friends. apparently i've been missing out this whole time (which is weird considering i love sushi).
i would go as far as to say that for the price, it is the best deal in LA rn. Not only is the food great but the ambiance, coupled with the high level of professionalism, makes this place so loved by others (i get it now). Trust me— friends and i paid $50+ per person elsewhere and here i are similar portions for $30 even. The other place had mayo and whatever secret sauce they use on 'funhouse' sushi nowadays.
This place had all-natural goodness (or so it seemed, don't quote me on the details).

This place is so laughably terrible. I had always heard about Sugarfish so it had been on my radar. I decided to go with my family when I found out about their 16% auto gratuity no tipping or add on fee policy.

To start the servers are all miserable, I get that there’s auto gratuity, but that should make you appreciate your job not to take it for granted. They were constantly huddled up together laughing and talking while multiple guests had empty drinks clearly looking around hoping to be helped. Then when they would finally arrive they would act like they were doing you a favor. When my wife walked to the restroom our waiter crossed her path, he rolls his eyes and looks to the sky and then points in the direction she’s walking to give her the right of way lol. At the end of our meal I had a question about one item as the name of the sake was super close to nigiri so I thought they accidentally added an item. I nicely brought it to a different waitresses attention (as the first person that treated us terribly had left without telling us, we only knew because we saw him walking out wearing headphones) and she condescendingly says “oh you mean you didn’t get that bottle right there in front of you?” with her eyebrows raised scolding me. Like dude I obviously misunderstood the bill and i asked with a smile saying that I probably forgot I got something. Anyways, in short the service was honestly the worst service I’ve ever received at a sit down establishment. Transients are made to feel more welcome at a fast food restaurant.

On to the meal, it was pretty bad. All three of us got the “don’t think, just eat, trust me” they rush you through your dishes to try and get you to eat faster (would be nice if you got the same service when you actually needed it) all three of us were unable to eat multiple items. Rolls were gross cheap mush, shrimp was inedible, the rice was HOT, we were just looking at each other like we were on a hidden camera show. I would literally prefer to go to the conveyor belt sushi place down the street.

We ended up dropping $300 between the 3 of us which would have been reasonable if it was decent, but between the awful service and inedible fish we felt super ripped off. I’m giving two stars only because I want to support the auto gratuity/no tipping model but they honestly need to get rid of the entirety of the depressed and entitled staff they have working for them, they should all be embarrassed.

Sushi Experience №37

My family and I have been eating at Sugarfish for a long time. The sushi was very good, the service was decent, and the space was pretty.

There is a definite problem since it has moved to the new Sportsman's Lodge Studio City location.

There doesn't seem to be a dedicated host at the door anymore. As my family and I arrive we have to wait for whatever service staff was assigned that role. That means we are standing and watching the staff member serve tables and eventuality when they are not busy come over to seat us. It certainly doesn't present a high end restaurant vibe when you are seated by whatever service staff happens to be stuck in the host role.

The second problem also presents itself at the front door. The minute one walks into the space one is hit with a cacophony of sound. Mostly it involves the bar and kitchen area. Whoever designed the space didn't seem to take sound mitigation into account.
The dirty table dishes are collected in bins and the staff preparing and plating food, all done in the bar area. They make a LOT of noise. The prep and bus area is open to the small dining room. As a result it makes the entire space very noisy. Also there is relatively loud music playing in the background. The closer you are seated to the kitchen area the louder the noise gets.

My family and I arrived at 5:30 and the dining area was only half full but it was already hard to talk and hear at conversational decibel levels. By the time we left at 6:45 the dining area was full. We had to shout to each other to be heard.

To maximize the small dining space the tables are very close to each other. This choice compromises the sound levels even more. So be prepared to shout to your dining companions the entire meal, especially if the restaurant is full.
Regrettably the sushi appears to have suffered as well and doesn't have that melt in your mouth feel anymore.

This Sugarfish doesn't have the care, consideration, or the luxury feel of the previous location. Between the noise and the absent host, no one appears to be in charge. There is more of a loud cafeteria vibe than a high end restaurant one.

I am willing to pay a premium for a premium experience. Sadly the dining experience at this Sugarfish is subpar. It leaves one unsatisfied if not downright unhappy.

Sugarfish is a great restaurant, however, this location lacks in customer service and staff training. I placed an order, but after 20 minutes of wait time I asked one of the wait staff to check on my food. It never takes that long for a sit in food order at Sugarfish. They said “you’re all done there is no more food coming out for you”. To which I replied “I haven’t gotten anything yet, I’m still waiting for my order to come out”. They never entered my order in the system. This location never fails to disappoint.

Food was good tasting and fresh. Rice was falling apart and hard for me to handle with chopsticks.
No tips are accepted! Perhaps this is why service was mediocre.

One of my favorite sushi spots!

It's always such a treat at sugarfish. The service is attentive and great. The courses are delicious. And you can't beat the price for an omakase style course. Every plate is delicious. The Trust Me course is perfect for 1 person and the equivalent of one specialty sushi roll at your typical sushi spot. There is a 16% add on fee for operations. You do not need to tip so I think the 16% is fair and is actually lower than what I would have tipped, especially with the kind service.

The interior is intimate, small, and cozy. Parking is free for 90min + a fee for anything over. There is an ice cream spot next door that is perfect to end the night with.

We were not able to get the taro, because the server said something about chef's choise, we didn't fight it much. So we stayed with the replacement, which was yellow tail. We had no problem with it. But then came 2 ladies and sat next to us, they ordered the same thing we did, the server said the same thing to them. But he let them have the taro after all. Same server by the way. That was not fair.

I love Sugarfish. I have frequented their downtown location and have always found myself savoring every bite. I bring all my out of town visitors here as a treat. I was excited to try this location which is closer to my home and check out the new collection at Sportsman's Lodge. The restaurant is quite nice, cozy, and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Sadly, my food was not up to the standards I have come to expect. Specifically, more than one piece of fish was chewy with stringy pieces (suggesting that maybe the chef is still learning his cut?) and the final hand roll had bits of shell in it. I mentioned this to my server who offered me more sushi, but I was turned off enough that I didn't want to try any other options. She was sympathetic, but I guess there was nothing else to be done. There was no offer of a discount or an invitation to come back when they had their kitchen sorted out. I hope these are just growing pains and that this was a singular happening, but I'm not sure I'll be back to Studio City Sugarfish.

Sushi Experience №73

I have been to multiple Sugarfish locations in LA and NYC and usually the experience is excellent, but the latest experience in Sugarfish Studio City left something to be desired.

Food: The food was delicious, as always. My partner and I each ordered the Trust Me - can't go wrong with that! This, and the other set menu options, are very reasonably priced for omakase and offer a variety of dishes: edamame, sashimi, sushi, and hand rolls, with different types of fish.

Service: Our main(?) server was quick to greet us and take our drink order, shortly followed by our food order. We informed him that my partner is allergic to shellfish, which we've never had issues with; Sugarfish's kitchen has always been able to accommodate and substitute the dishes containing shellfish with another item, and it was the same in this case too. After ordering, he didn't stop by the table much, but we were able to get his attention when needed (such as refilling drinks). The runners, however, were another story. There appeared to be sooo many people running around to deliver food to tables. We wouldn't have minded that, EXCEPT for a few things:
- Runner service started well. We had both ordered the Trust Me, which should've been the same except for the one item substitution. After the first couple of dishes arriving at the same time for both of us, the rest kept getting delivered to one person at a time. Uh, WHAT, why would they do that? It got confusing and they missed one of the dishes so we had to follow up with our server. He remedied the situation, but it took additional time for the kitchen to remake it, and it's something that should have been straightforward if things were delivered at the same time as they had started.
- For the final dish, the runner mis-served the shellfish-substitute dish to the wrong person. Since the second dish didn't arrive until later and we decided to wait until both people had food (again, WHY was this even a thing?), we didn't notice until right before eating them. This lack of attention to a food allergy is messed up. They didn't even notice the swap and it was only because we've been to Sugarfish before that we noticed the difference (it's harder to see what's inside of the hand rolls). I mention this because a newcomer coming in with a food allergy might not have noticed, and this could've been more serious situation.

Ambiance: We arrived before 9pm on a Sat. There was a short line and we were told it was about a half hour wait. No problem. It seemed reasonable for a weekend evening. In the end, we probably only ended up waiting around 10-15 min. By the time we sat down, the line was gone and there were even some empty tables around the restaurant - i.e., it was busy, but not that busy. It was a bit loud, but again, not totally unreasonable.

Overall, excellent quality food, but the service slip-ups with the service did not make for a thrilling experience and, though we are usually agreeable with it, we did not appreciate the pre-added tip in these circumstances.

I had always heard great things about SUGARFISH and finally had a chance to try their takeout boxes. Honestly, one of the best “presentations” in take out form I’ve ever seen; from the aesthetics of the food itself to the genius packaging, I was really impressed. The quality of the fish here is undeniably premium… and though it’s not necessarily the cheapest around, you truly get what you pay for when it comes to quality here. Mind you, I already had a $70 order for myself alone, and the manager is trippin over a $5 order of rice proof of child like it's an ID for alcohol. I went and got my kid.

Honestly, some of the best sushi I have ever had, definitely stands up with Nobu. I went on a Tuesday so didn’t have to wait for a seat at the bar. The staff were very happy to help me decide what to eat and very helpful with describing how ordering worked. I ordered the Sushi Nozawa Trust Me Omakase. It was a large amount of sushi, some sashimi, and two outstanding hand rolls. I’ve never really like hand rolls, because the seaweed can be chewy on the outside. However at Sugarfish, the seaweed used for the roll is toasted and the rice inside is warm. These hand rolls were, far and away, the best I’ve ever eaten. I sat at the bar and had a great conversation with a retired Hollywood producer while waiting for my meal (he produced big hit “Trading Places.” Very nice guy). VERY nice meal.
I tried to eat at another Sugarfish on a Saturday, and it was a two hour wait at the Pasadena location. I would have eaten it every night to be quite honest. I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Terrible for pickup. I ordered on Postmates for pickup for a birthday lunch. At the time of order it said 35-45 mins, but after placing the order gave me a time just over an hour later. I drove there and arrived on time only to receive a notification as I was parking that the order had been cancelled. No explanation and you can’t reach the location by phone. I would have gone in for an explanation if their parking lot weren’t such a nightmare. Really disappointing to arrange my plans around their pickup time only to arrive to birthday lunch without any food. Would never order from this location again. The parking situation alone is prohibitive without the terrible experience and total lack of communication and customer service.

Great fresh sushi, amazing atmosphere. I really enjoyed it, couldnt wait for the next one. Service is very polite and amicable. I just wish they put more lights and lighter furniture. Dony like dark environments or dark places to dine in. The lighter, the happier the customer is.

The sushi is always consistently good. You can't go in expecting a bunch of fancy rolls. It's very simple. Lets the quality of the fish speak for itself. Do the Trust Me or the Nozawa Trust Me. It's a good amount of food. Been to 3 different locations, and they're all a little small, but I think that might even be intentional to keep the service level up. There's no tipping. It's just included as part of the price, so it's pretty reasonable for good quality sushi.

Hands down, the best sushi, and cheaper than many omakase places. I would eat here every day if I could. It’s worth driving through LA traffic for. Hell, it’s worth flying to LA for if I’m honest.

What an experience this was. All the fish was so fresh and delicious. The wait staff is really on it with coursing out each dish so you can savor it and disgust for the next course. The first was plenty for me but it is fun to add from the a La carte list. Would definitely recommend

Long wait time and the food was mediocre. Fish did not seem fresh and plate options were limited. There is no ambience and the location is small - at night it’s also too dark in there. Very disappointing since my experience at the other Sugar Fish location in LA was great.

Absolutely delicious sushi in a beautiful ambiance with an extensive menu of sushi specialties. We got the Trust Me Nozawa and loved it along with some sides of uni, anago, engawa, albacore belly, ikura (salmon eggs) and more. The toro was amazing. All the ingredients tasted so fresh and the flavors really popped. Highly recommend you visit, the wait is pretty short and they don’t take reservations. Excellent staff as well!

I'm sorry for the 2 stars but a business that charges automatically 7 dollars fees to order online for pickup? and there is no way to make an order or have a question over the phone as you get redirected to a not so lovely message that says you must use the app which basically will force you to pay a fee for a pickup...
Your fish is not all that and your way needs improvement.

Had an amazing experience the other night. Good atmosphere, good sushi and wonderful staff. Tommy the manager was really helpful and professional when it came to choosing the menu and making sure we liked our choices. The wait can be long to get a table but I will say it is worth the wait for the sushi and prices you get.

Great sushi and a great selection of three introductory entrees if you don't know exactly what you're looking for. This place is not cheap, but that's probably to be expected given the location. I left feeling a little bit hungry, but nothing that ice cream nearby wouldn't solve. The Saki was typical but the prices were reasonable. If you're a novice to sushi restaurants this is the place to go to get a little experience.

I'm giving 3 stars based around what SugarFish once was, and how it has fallen. I hadn't been back to a SugarFish in 10 years--I dined several times at the original location and a couple times at the (at the time) only other location downtown. Back then the quality was exquisite--every morsel that came out of the kitchen was impeccable. The rice was perfect, the temperature contrast of the fish and rice was always spot-on, the marinades delicate, the fish was top notch, hand rolls bursting with flavor and the nori crisp to the point of exploding. Service was attentive and came with suggestions on how best to enjoy each dish. It was, once, a top-level experience.

Now, it's merely good. Lack of attention to detail, quality has slipped. Rice was a little mushy and fell apart when picking up the pieces. Hand rolls were less flavorful, the nori a little damp. Dishes weren't bussed and piled up around me. Marinated dishes were overly sauced and a bit soggy. The flavors were still familiar and nothing tasted bad. Is it worth the price? Not anymore. I suppose this was inevitable once they decided to expand and increase volume. The spirit of reverence and care has been replaced by branding and turnover. You'll still enjoy the food, I don't doubt. But if you, like I, knew it 10 years ago, you may feel a little sad at where it has gone. On to the next, thanks for the memories, I guess.

The most terrible, horrific experience I have ever had in the studio city area. I have been living in Studio City for quite some time and have had nothing but good reviews for every place I’ve tried..it’s always a class act in this area. However I just went to Sugarfish at this location for my first time today and it has changed my view on Sugarfish across-the-board. Once we arrived we were prompted with a server by the name of Crystal who had such a nasty and terrible attitude from the time we stepped in the door. Upon arriving everyone was very kind and sweet. We were then sat down and was not greeted by our waiter by the name of Crystal. She looked at us up and down did not give us a warm welcoming and said “have you been here before” as she slammed the menu on the table giving us a very rude welcoming. We decided to just ignore it, we figured she maybe had a bad day and we proceeded with ordering. We ordered a few hand rolls between me and my friend and was very eager to try the rolls since we had such great reviews about sugar fish and the KazuNori chain. Starting off with the service the service was the most horrible service I’ve ever had in my life. After 30 minutes past, my friend was given her first hand roll and I was waiting with nothing on my plate which I found very odd. After about 25 minutes Crystal comes out and gives me a completely different order it was the cut rolls when I in fact ordered the hand rolls. After I told her that I think there was some miscommunication she looked me dead in my face and told me “you said you wanted the cut rolls.” It wasn’t a sorry for the miscommunication I’ll get that right up it was just simply rude and ghetto . We we were given our hand rolls about 30 minutes apart, so while I was eating one hand roll my friend didn’t have anything on her plate vice versa. Our waiter Crystal never once asked us if we were doing OK we were out of water she never asked us if we wanted a refill. Finally after an hour of eating about four rolls Crystal goes up to my friend asked her did she need anything else and then walked away. I love Studio City Studio City like I said is nothing but classy but I don’t think people like Crystal should work at such a classy establishment due to such a negative and nasty behavior.

Came here for lunch. The food was great but the service was terrible. Waiters stood by the kitchen and talked to each other rather then help costumers. We constantly had to get their attention to get more water, napkins, ginger, wasabi. When we asked for more water the waiter looked very annoyed as he is doing is a big favor refilling the glass. It looks like they don’t care at all about costumers. Very sad because the food is great.

It's my husband's favorite sushi place. I think my favorite time to go is before the afternoon idk I think it taste extra good. The service is excellent very attentive staff and informative in all the dishes your having. Very nice place to have a one on one conversation, my husband has taken coworkers here and they share their love of sushi here too. It's more a traditional take on sushi, so because of that a better experience for a veteran sushi eater rather someone who is being introduced to sushi. I also love the green tea.
