Kappo Miyabi
About This Sushi Bar

Kappo (かっぽう / 割烹) means cooking food with knives and fire.

In simple Japanese terms, かっ / 割 means cutting, chopping and cooking food with knife, and so on. And ぽう / 烹 means boiling, cooking food with fire.

So the combination of these two Japanese characters are a different expression of cooking with a knife and fire.

Kappo is a dish that is improvised by the customer's order and can be enjoyed at the counter or at the table just in front of the kitchen without much formality.

From now on, Kappo will be held in Miyabi restaurant, Santa Monica.

So, we often refer to Japan's dictionary as an instant gourmet dish that can be easily explained in a short explanation.

We had a good dinner here. We ordered miso soup, seaweed salad, salmon sushi, mixed tempura, spicy tuna roll and a rainbow roll. Everything was very good. The seafood was fresh and had great flavor. We really have no complaints regarding the food. Our server was lovely and they were very attentive. The downside - it's definitely on the expensive side and the atmosphere is okay.

Kappo Miyabi is an absolute gem in Santa Monica! From the moment you step in, the atmosphere immerses you in a blend of authentic Japanese elegance and modern charm. The food is nothing short of spectacular – fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

The Omakase experience is a must-try, offering a curated selection of sushi and sashimi that feels like a true culinary journey. Every bite bursts with fresh ingredients and masterful preparation. Standouts for me were the Truffle Salmon Carpaccio and Albacore Sashimi – absolute perfection!

The service is equally impressive. The staff is attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, always ready to offer recommendations and ensure every detail is just right.

Whether it’s a special occasion or just a regular night out, Kappo Miyabi delivers an unforgettable dining experience. Highly recommend this spot for anyone looking to enjoy authentic Japanese cuisine at its finest!

The place is better if you have a group of 5-10 people for a night out but not so much eg if you meet with a friend for a chat over dinner over a 1-on-1.

Fun place with very gracious folks. We really loved the sea bass croquettes, and followed with two hot stone rice bowls, eel and salmon. The unagi was well prepared and their sauce is less BBQ and more subtle. Plenty of eel. Same with the salmon, not over seasoned. Rice was also fine and we will go back for raw fish next visit; their omakase choices look good. Had a nice few desserts including persimmon and ice cream and a great stout Japanese beer.

KM is a very nice, traditional Japanese sushi restaurant. The selection is extensive and should satisfy most discriminating palates.

I particularly enjoyed the lamb(top ten ever for me), garlic edamame and the ikura nigiri was fresh and excellent.

Service was excellent by a very nice server. I appreciated her traditional Japanese wardrobe and refined demeanor.

The location is very convenient just south of wilshire not far from the Santa Monica beach but in a calmer area than the touristy promenade.

I spent $127 total which is reasonable since I ordered many items. However, the $7 charge for a sprite(double most places)and their item prices in general were of below average value losing them one star in my rating.

Recommended.

Parking is a little difficult but Kappo Miyabi is right at the corner of Arizona and 7th street. It's right next to Backyard Bowls if you haven't tried that amazing açaí spot!

Came here for DineLA and left a little disappointed. Loved the presentation though!

Food was okay, I think the agedashi and miso glazed eggplant were probably the best.
The spicy tuna on crispy rice didn't seem fresh because of the post results via stomach ache.

DineLA meal set $35
Miso Soup = average
House Salad = average
Chef's Choice 5pcs Sashimi = okay but not mind-blowing
Agedashi Tofu = good
Miso Glazed Eggplant = good
Chicken Karaage = good
Grilled Salmon = okay it's definitely not wild or fresh salmon
Spicy Tuna on Crispy Rice = horrible!
Sunomono Cucumber with Unagi = okay

Service was friendly as they did check in and ensure everything was smooth.

The ambiance was clean and loved that they have two spots for outdoor seating. They have an indoor patio where it's dog friendly in case you don't want to be near the street corner.

The freshness on Sashimi & maki were overrated. The size of each sashimi piece was larger than our regular places, though. But, we are the group for better grades of fish than the size. We did not have any rolls. If people think this place sushi is good, then it must be the roll ingredients like sauces. The asian lady who took our order didn't seem to want to talk. However, the other lady and guys were working hard in there. We won't be returning.

In A Nutshell:

-I've eaten at Kappo Miyabi a handful of times & it's actually really good.
-Yes, their menu prices are on the $$ side, but their food quality is top-notch.
-I especially enjoy their Seafood Udon, you get a couple pieces of big shrimp, a few mussels & clams mixed w/ some cabbage & udon noodles.
-The pork broth makes this soup really mouth-watering & soothes your soul in the breezy, cool Santa Monica evening weather.
-Their sashimi & sushi options aren't bad either & highly recommended.

Overall, the draft beer at $10 is high, but that's really the only knock about this place.

Service was good. Atmosphere was great. Sushi rolls were so dry and flavorless. Only thing I enjoyed was the Sashimi. Oh, and if you're going to charge 6 DOLLARS for a diet Coke, at least have the decency to have a fountain drink dispenser and not bring a plastic bottle that only cost 1.89 in the local gas stations. Food is not worth the price.

As an avid sushi seeker, I came with high expectation due to reviews. However, it did not meet my expectations. We ordered sushi omakase ($100), unagi stone hot pot, and few other dishes. As for the omakase, the quality of the fish was average and rice (shari) was disappointing. When it comes to pricy sushis, I expect good quality from not only the fish but the base as well. Also for something that cost 100, I expected something better than a take out tray presentation. As for Unagi stone hot pot, it was actually decent! Unagi was flavorful, soft and juicy. Soft crab roll (current season special), I do not recommend. Bitter, dry and bland. Overall, this place has average sushi and few good warm plates. I recommend sticking to cooked dishes over sushis. Their sushis are priced ridiculously high for subpar quality and presentation.

The food is average. There are many Japanese restaurants that can be used as alternatives. The service attitude of this restaurant is shocking. After we were ready to order, no one paid any attention to us. The waitress was happily chatting with the guests at the next table and completely ignored our need to order. After a long time, she came over slowly. Our ordering machine was not working and we needed her to change it. She asked us to wait and went to serve the white guests next door. I have every reason to suspect that she discriminated against us. We were not served to order until half an hour after we sat down. After that, she rolled her eyes at us the whole time. We said no to anything we asked, and then asked us to check the menu carefully, but it was on the menu. We pointed to it and she said it was not there. Very speechless dining experience

We happened upon this place while exploring Santa Monica beach and being turned away from the neighboring Gyu Kaku (told that there would be a 2-hour wait for 6 people). We called the restaurant and asked if we could be seated sooner and were told to come right over. It was probably a 5 minute walk from the 3rd street promenade. We were instantly seated upon arrival in a cozy part of the restaurant. The server was very friendly and took great care of us. We ordered the uni box, but they said because uni is so difficult to get nowadays, they substitute it with tuna. Okay fine, but maybe you need to revamp your menu because you should not serve a dish that literally says uni in it and not serve uni with it. That was my only dislike with this restaurant and why I am deducting 1 star from my review. The "uni" box dish was still very good nonetheless. We also got the fatty tuna roll and a couple of skewers (steak and pork). The food here is excellent and the fish tastes really fresh, as it should being they are 3 blocks away from the ocean. The price is on the higher end for me though, but to be expected because of their location.

This extraordinary restaurant is LA's best kept secret! No, California's best! And I've lived in Japan.
We've been going nearly every week for years because we can't seem to find another restaurant that comes close to their exceptional standard. Every dish on their extensive menu is DELICIOUS!!!!
We dream about their sea bass croquets, their Wagyu dumplings, and the marinated pork butakaku. Their sushi and sashimi tastes as fresh as if it were caught the same day. Their miso eggplant, spicy tuna, popcorn shrimp roll and crispy rice with A5 Wagyu which are super too.
Kappa Miyabi has everything the top Japanese restaurants have on their menu, but they prepare the dishes even better! They also have loads of other treasures and treats you'll never forget.
And their staff wrote the book on outstanding customer service! We adore Narae! She is an absolute dream. Narae and their entire staff treat us like family and we feel like we've hit the lottery every time we visit!

Nice place with high quality fish. A little pricey but it's Santa Monica so pretty typical. We didn't have reservation so we had to sit at the bar which was fine. It's a little annoying that their machine at the bar beeps every few minutes when they get an order, customers shouldn't have to hear the beeping sound! Otherwise it was a good meal. Also it was really cold inside, the customers next to us asked them to reduce their AC. Dress warm if you eat here.

I left completely full with a big smile on my face. I just love love sushi 🍣

Not only was the food was good, the interior design makes it seems like you're in Japan. It's beautifully done. It is also so roomy on there. It doesn't seem like you're literally eating right next to someone.

What I ate:
• Started off with some MISO SOUP | you got to clean your palate

• got two pieces of NEGI TORO w/ CRISPY SEAWOOD
The buttery Toro is so good it melted in my mouth. I wish I didn't have to share that. you better be eating this in one bite. It be completely rude of you didn't.

• It jumps straight to the main course the HONJITSU | this is what you should really come for. You basically get to try a little of everything in this set. All chef's choice so it will be different every time. Llet me break it down for you what chef got for me.
🍣 6 pieces of sashimi
🍣 5 of pieces of sashimi
🍢 2 skewers

• vegetarian POTATO SALAD | so creamy

I got to try their beef noodle soup in a hot stone pot. It's amazing. I was able to bring this home and eat it for leftover and still good.

Would you eat this? And would you want to share it with someone?
To be honest I would get this for me alone

You know that a Japanese restaurant is legit with the majority of the guests is Japanese. ✨ First time here and I have to say I'm impressed! One of the freshest sashimis I've had. 🥹 We try:

- Premium Chirashi 🍚. This dish is like a BYO Chirashi. Great variety of fresh fish and it comes with small plates of pickles too! 🤤 I'm honestly very impressed with the freshness of their fish. The scallop and toro are soooo good. This chirashi is huge, it can feed two hungry people, I believe. Highly recommended! 🌟

- Butakaku 🐷. It's a slow cooked pork belly in glazed soy sauce. Another favorite of mine! ♥️ Love how tender and flavorful the pork is. Definitely a great starter!

- Steamed Asari, japanese sake steamed clam. It's an okay dish for us and it comes out lukewarm.

- Pork Sukiyaki 🍲. Love their sukiyaki broth because it's not too sweet. but I believe some people might think it's too bland 😆. The sauce that comes with the raw egg truly elevates the dish, it's rich, creamy, and flavorful.

Can’t wait to go back to try more foods! ☺️

I usually expect to be forgotten or left to my own devices but I was seated and not long after receiving the menu, my order was taken. The sushi was delicious and fresh! And although I didn't buy the more expensive kind, I do think it's notable that they do provide a list of the freshest fish they have and when it's available. Overall this restaurant was a very nice experience and if I ever come back to CA I'll be sure to stop in again.

The wagyu beef pot is just regular beef. This looks nothing like in the other reviews and they charge $90 for this pot. The salmon in the grilled rice pot is also stink (forgot to take a picture), and I saw they prepared it in the kitchen - the fish was dark brown. $150 for something like this is very disappointing. Christmas is not the reason for bad food. I can vouch for my words here and hope to warn people who would get treated like this.

They are very slow. I waited more than 40 mins to get this 12-piece sushi to-go order even though the store had a lot of empty seats.

The food here is generally quite decent -- some dishes (e.g., sashimi and skewers) are great but some are ok / inconsistent. We've been here probably four-five times but will not be coming back because, twice in a row, we waited forever for food / service.

Last time, the waiter left while taking orders to check if a dish we wanted was available and did not come back for 20 minutes or so to take the rest of orders. She offered no apology and was rather impatient to us. Also, that time, cooking was inconsistent because they've "changed the chef." The asari sakamushi was over-sweetened (totally different from the previous time) and we had to request to recook.

Today, most of the small dishes came out fairly smoothly and tasted good. Then, there was a huge wait for the main dish (hamburg steak -- takes 70 minutes to prepare??). One of the appetizers (ankimo) never came out after 1.5 hour. The waiter(s) checked on us once in 30 minutes. They were probably understaffed and rarely notice unattended customers. They should probably remove the curtains between tables because they block the view, adding to the poor table service.

The Service: The staffs are very welcoming. All of them are very professional and efficient, especially my server, David! The general manager, Kevin, definitely has a great team!!

The Food:

Blue Crab Uni Bowl - good to share because you don't want to get full with the rice. It is just the "starter"

Hamo Karaage - thin eel fried with tempura dressing. very crispy and it goes so well with the light dressing.

Sea Bass skewer - Super tender. The sauce is not overly sweet.

Sushi - Super fresh!! The tuna just melted in my mouth. (BTW, the sushi chefs are really Japanese!)

Ginko Nut - my first time trying grilled ginko nuts. Very interesting texture.

Scallop - prepared perfectly! Love the size for appetizer.

They are indeed using great ingredients!

Can't end the meal without something sweet.

Dried persimmon w/ cream cheese, Macha ice-cream & macha cake. My favorite has to be the persimmon!! Great combination with the cream cheese.

Sushi Experience №126

Update: I went back to give it another try last month and it was a much better experience than back in February. We went on Friday at around 7:30 pm and didn’t expect much besides seated indoors since it was super chilly outside. We were greeted into the tatami room and I believe it was because there were not that many customers at this time. We ordered our usual especially their Wagyu crispy rice and everything was superb. This time, the servers and waitress were attentive and didn’t mess up our orders. I thoroughly enjoyed this recent visit. It was a complete 360 turn from the last visit and I realized I needed to update this review.

Previous Rating: 3 Stars
I really wish I could give them five stars but our overall experience was lackluster. My cousin called the restaurant the day before regarding reserving the tatami room and the restaurant had confirmed the reservation. We arrived a couple of minutes later than our reservation but the street parking was terrible on a Saturday night. We told the host we had a reservation for the tatami room and she told us to wait outside. They then seated us outside a couple of minutes later and we were so confused since we called the day before confirming the reservation for the room. The server stated we were not listed for the tatami room and someone else was occupying it. We didn’t want to leave so we took the outdoor seating. The food was incredibly delicious and quite literally the reason the restaurant deserved stars. There were miscommunications between the waitress and our orders and they kept giving us the wrong order however, that was rectified and all was good in the end. We would come back for the food but we hope that the communication could improve to better our experience.

Great meal, horrible service. If you are visiting this small restaurant especially during a busy rainy day ordering multiple omakase, make sure to take picture of them. And be extra cautious if the server is young Asian female. She ruined our family dining experience by insisting all items were served when one premium box was missing. We also ordered hot sake and it was served without a hot bowl/container. No explanation why the hot sake was served as lukewarm sake until I called manager to complain about the sake as well as the missing premium omakase box. Sadly the manager insisted just like the server until I showed them pictures of meal… after that the manager finally apologized and didn’t charge us for serving lukewarm sake. The premium box finally served after we sat there for 1.5hr and maybe 30 minutes arguing. This is just a quick summary of my horrible experience at Kappo few months back, and even nowadays I try my best to avoid all Osen related restaurants 😖 So sad.

📍702 Arizona Ave Suite BB, Santa Monica, CA 90401

Kappi Miyabi became one of my favorite restaurant ! My friend and I ordered a lot (but there was no left over). I am really picky about sushi and OMG the sushi quality was soooo good. Especially the Uni(sea urchin) and Amaebi(sweet shrimp) were so fresh and delicious. Sea bass skewers were very soft and flavorful, I will definitely order again next time! You must try seafood chanpon udon, you will not regret. All the dishes, I uploaded, must be popular dishes from restaurant, hope everyone try all :) Oh! Their entrance is beautiful to take a picture !

A really impressive Japanese restaurant that will knock your socks off. Convinient location and fun exterior with a nice little photo op, it's easy to find and see from the street. It has the cutest little entryway the opens into a really well decorated and furnished reception/dining area. They feature several different types of seating options and the staff is extremely nice. Food quality is excellent as is the service. A lot of nice little added touches and amazing ambiance make this such a great place to dine. Menu selection is incredible as is the specials and sake selection.

We normally dine in there, but for take out wasn’t the best experience tbh. For $95 you expect a little more food or better looking at least. The seabass hand roll $15 was a joke, it was fallen apart with the size of my pinky , 4 pieces of dry chicken karaage 20$ and dry rock shrimp tempura 21$. Sat night dinner expectation and reality

One of the best and freshest sushi I've had in the US. (Believe me, I have a high standard for sushi) We ordered $90 omakase (15 pieces in total) and were totally satisfied with every piece. Each piece was bigger and thicker than expected. Rolls were great too. Excellent quality! I'll definitely be coming back.

Ordered takeout and everything was fresh and flavorful, and I highly recommend. Very good value for high-end sushi. One item was not available on the menu from my online order and management was very responsive in making it right. Highly recommend Kappo Miyabi both for their high quality sushi, but also for their customer service. I look forward to dining there again.

I don’t much like sushi or sashimi but Kappo Miyabi is special to me. I can’t eat raw fish dishes but the food that I ordered wasn’t fishy at all. Kappo Miyabi has freshest sushi and sashimi in LA. The taste of sushi depends on not only fresh fish but well seasoned rice. The rice in sushi was seasoned well not too salty, sour or sweet.

Not just sushi, but authentic foods like miso soup, sushi rice, kushiyaki, udon, nabe and the like.

Cream nakasaki udon is my favorite hot dish.
I can’t wait to eat Sushi in Kappo Miyabi!!!

Awesome place! One of the must visit place. I visted this place with my wife as this place was one of the places open on Christmas day. The atmosphere and the quality of food are better than any Sushi place I've visited. As I had many sushi before in Korea and Japan, I could tell this place only offers wild and fresh fish for their menus. The price is reasonably high given the quality of food here. If you visit many sushi places in the US, you find out they usually have high pricey menu but the quality of fish is not good. This place is different. So, you should visit this place. My wife is usually not a big fan of the sushi as she is sensitive in fish smells. Even she really liked the sushi here. Also, their other non sushi menu's like gyoza, chicken and udon were good to have.

I order $90 sushi omakase but im kind of disappointed. Although the portion is big with 15 pieces and the fish is thick, I believe the fish quality and selection could be better and then the quantity could be down to 12 pieces. The duck breast is also served a bit cold with salad. We 2 people got there on a Sunday night at around 7pm and were able to have a seat at the bar without waiting.

And to end the meal a bowl of creamy Nagasaki udon nabe or unagi hot pot. 👌👍🏽

I will definitely come back with my parents and try the private spaces they have for a more cozy and dedicated setting to ourselves.
I forgot to take pictures but I definitely recommend seabass croquettes, omakase bowl, unagi hot pot, and creamy nagasaki udon nabe to try in addition to the items shown in the pictures. THANK YOU!!!! 🥳🙏🏼
