Shizen is a truly unique and extraordinary Michelin Star dining destination in San Francisco, redefining what vegan cuisine can be. As a completely plant-based sushi bar, Shizen masterfully uses innovative techniques, faux meats, and plant-based proteins to create stunningly realistic imitation seafood. Even as non-vegans, we were blown away by the depth of flavor and creativity in every dish.

We started with the Body & Soul Roll, which quickly became one of our favorites. The combination of fresh vegetables, creamy elements, and expertly seasoned plant-based proteins created a roll that was both comforting and exciting.

The Secret Weapon Roll was another standout. It packed a serious punch of heat—perfect for spice lovers—and the eryngii mushrooms added an interesting, chewy texture that we absolutely loved. It was bold, spicy, and perfectly balanced.

The Missing Piece Roll was a more classic option, offering a solid and satisfying experience. It was a great way to balance out the more adventurous choices we made.

Saving the best for last, the Candlestick Roll was a showstopper in every sense of the word. Not only did it deliver the most complex and delicious flavors of the evening, but the dramatic fire presentation elevated the dish to a whole new level. The upscale touch of the flaming plate added a wow factor that we won’t soon forget.

Shizen is proof that vegan cuisine can be elevated, indulgent, and unforgettable. The use of plant-based proteins to mimic the texture and taste of seafood is nothing short of genius. Combine that with their elegant ambiance and stellar service, and you have one of the best dining experiences in San Francisco. We can’t wait to return to explore more of their incredible menu!

A very sought after vegetarian restaurant in SF where you shouldn’t go without a booking. Reach on time with a booking else you would have to stand outside in line. Food does live up to the hype. My suggestion is to try new food that you may not commonly see/ have. It is on the pricier side (with alcohol added), so definitely a place for a special event. Spicy Miso Ramen and vegetable tempura were pretty usual, but the veg ceviche, secret weapon special rolls, and the cocktails were new, refreshing, interesting. Service is good, and staff is friendly. Tables are very close together so it’s hard to find a place to keep your stuff - esp jackets and backpacks.

** Harrasment Alert!! **
The servers literally HARASSED US FOR NOT TIPPING THEM!!

To the one who followed us with a death stare even after we left the restaurant: you are not entitled for a tip automatically + you proved me right just from the way you behaved that you didn’t deserve my tip either. In the way you and your team behaved - you don't deserve a single penny. If that’s your livelihood, learn to ask for tips properly.

To the server who incessantly argued with me for not tipping - if you’re underpaid, then you should ask your boss to raise your wages, s/he gets a 90% margin on the already expensive foods sold at the restaurant.

Tip is not an entitlement & harassing a customer clearly shows why this practise shouldn’t be encouraged, besides most countries in the world do not tip!

The food here is wonderful — it’s one of my favorite restaurants in SF, and I’m not vegan and have also taken many non-vegan friends who’ve thoroughly enjoyed it.

However, they turn the restaurant over all at once for reservations (5pm, 6:30pm, 8pm), so on our most recent visit we had to wait in line outside, and were seated at 6:45 despite arriving at 6:25 for our 6:30 reservation.

Then at 8:05 while midway through dessert we were asked to leave to accommodate the 8pm reservations.

If they’re going to schedule reservations like this, it would be ideal to leave some more buffer time between reservation slots (eg plan for 1 hour 45 mins instead of 1 hour 30 mins) as it wasn’t great to both get seated late and then rushed away less than 90 minutes later, especially for a meal we paid over $150 for.

Delicious food & sushi! I loved the Brussels sprouts, the candlestick roll was really fun (comes with a little flame on the plate), and the boddy & soul roll was so yummy! Attentive service. This place was on my list for so long and it was totally worth the wait! The food, ambiance, service, rates everything was amazing! We had the Open invitation sushi, it was a little sweet but very unique. Then Body and Soul sushi, I loved that one. So flavourful and different! Must try! We had the Spicy Ramen as well. It was nice, the quantity was a lot! Wasn't spicy though, so maybe you should ask them for a higher spice level than the original. The Gyozas were also nice. The place felt totally worth the hype! I will definitely go here multiple times!

whether its an intimate evening or a family affair, Shizen will not disappoint. One of a kind vegan dinning, it will introduce you to classic vegan sushi but also unexpected delights for your palette. You do need to reserve a week in advance and don't be late because reservations are only held over for a short time. Parking is not always east to find but there is street parking.
A zen, minimalistic decor with close tables, lends to its intimate setting, where boisterousness is not fitting. As you peruse the menu you may wonder if some of the names of dishes are akin to a popular board game. Overwhelming though the choices may be, asking your server for advice is advisable.
We tried several dishes and except for 1 they were all worthy to try again. The shio ramen was not a favorite for any of us. The smoked flavor imparted a meaty flavor which being vegan was not appealing, although the depth of flavor was impressive.
Marinated tomato nigiri, yes, tomato, was surprisingly delicious. as was the bean curd katsu.

Came in w out reservation they were able to take us but gave us an hour limit. Everyone is seated very closely together and it was very loud. Could hear everyone’s conversations. As a vegan the best thing I had was the avocado roll. I am so sick of being served a mixture of shredded raw tofu and mayo. It is not good. Was also very disappointed by the ramen. Super bland no depth. Like no ingredients. Crap noodles and the bbq tofu in it that tasted like tofurkey ham was inedible and tainted the whole thing. The type of ramen I’d expect from a reg restaurant with one vegan option you settle for (for $20) I’m sure they may have things that are good on the menu but I can’t afford to experiment and find out with these prices. Im sorry I hate to leave a poor review for an all vegan restaurant but the lack of honest reviews made my experience so disappointing.

TLDR; RUDE STAFF, BAD SERVICE.

Got a reservation for dinner on a Wednesday night. It was surprisingly very busy. We waited around 10 min get checked in and another 20-30 min(!) until someone came and took our order - both drinks + food all at once.

After less than an hour of eating, we were told that we have reached the 90 min time limit, and they needed the table back. I explained that we were just sitting and waiting for first 30 min. They said "unfortunately it happens, we're busy." They asked us if we needed boxes when we were obviously still working on the food and still had a lot left AND dropped off our check without us asking. We felt extremely rushed and uncomfortable.

A few minutes later, another person came by and very rudely said "We need the table. You need to leave!" We were shocked.

I understand it's not their fault it's busy. The restaurant needs better reservation system/management, but they didn't have to be so rude about it.

It was my second time here, and I would never come back nor recommend this place.

It was ok. We ordered several items and everything looked beautiful and tasted good .. not necessarily like sushi but good. We felt rushed when the server asked if we wanted a togo box after only minutes of giving us our order. She let us know that it “ is time for our next service”. We didn’t get our service yet!

I guess because they only want to stay open for 4 hours they have to rush everyone. This was a birthday dinner and we wanted to enjoy a glass of wine and appetizers... this is not the place for that. We will most likely not return for any reason.

I got five separate recommendations for Shizen, so obviously, I had to check it out on my trip. My friend even said, “Michelin-level sushi.” And honestly, it’s AMAZING. Shizen is a fully vegan sushi bar, and the creativity in all the dishes blew us away. It was the best sushi I’ve ever had in my life 🥲 Both my omnivore partner and brother were impressed!

The appetizers were great with the karaage and katsu as our top picks. The ramen was good, but we all agreed we’d rather go for more sushi rolls next time.

Definitely make a reservation—it’s super busy! If you’re in the SF area, regardless if you’re vegan or not, you HAVE to visit. It’s mandatory 😛

I ordered:
- Surprise ending
- Secret weapon
- Kaarage
- Bean curd katsu
- Shizen shiitake
- Plot twist
- Spicy garlic miso ramen
- Missing piece

Really cool vegan sushi spot with a variety of dishes. We started off with the kaarage and the eggplant nigiri. The kaarage was super crispy and came with a very flavorful sauce. the eggplant nigiri was also good, but i liked the kaarage more. After that we got the "green roll" which were cold rolls with a variety of green vegetables. i found it okay since they were plain, but my friend liked them a lot more. we got 3 special rolls. the hidden agenda (my favorite) was super flavorful and crispy and had a great overall balance. the secret weapon was unexpectedly spicy, so each bite was a battle against spice and took a while to finish. and for the final, we got the surprise ending, which i will say i had a great experience with (my friend begged to differ). As this one has a surprise, i won't say much more than you should try it ;) . we wrapped up the meal with their desert of the day which was a "cheesecake" topped with blueberries, strawberries, and caramel sauce. Service staff explained the dishes well and gave recommendations to our tastes, so that was nice. Ambience wasn't really my style but it was clean, minimalist, and enjoyable. just personal preference. would come back here to try the other rolls for sure

There were so many creative and delicious ways that veggies were used in the dishes here. I've been to a handful of vegan sushi places, and it's hard to nail a beautiful, well-balanced, and enticing cut roll. Not only are there so many versions of this at Shizen, but the side dishes and appetizers are equally enticing.
My favorite dish was the Yuba Salad- I'd reorder that upon return for sure. I loved that the rolls all had the different textures and mouth-feels I would expect from sushi.

Food was ok, came out quickly and service was great but it was busy and relatively loud while we were dining. The ramen was the most disappointing to me- noodles seemed borderline overcooked and the broth was just salty but with little actual flavour. I found it to be some of the more blah vegan dishes I’ve had in a while. It was either super spicy or just tasted like rice. The vegan cream cheese seemed a little off to be honest but that’s on me for not saying anything. I will say they’re great at accommodating allergies as I’ve heard they’ve accommodated gluten free + avocado allergy.

We did not have reservation neither they had anything available to book for another week. You can tell how much busy this place is and famous for their food. Had walked in and asked if we can get a table, the host is amazing and said that if someone else cannot come, she might consider and since we were open to the open bar, she took our name. We finally got the bar area within an hour and we ordered many dishes. Every single one was unique and amazing in taste. I would highly recommend this place for any locals and visitors. Other sushi’s that we have liked are Secret weapon & candlestick. Prime suspect & hidden agenda were okay. Surprise ending was style over substance.

We also love kin-sangria, basil mojito & hot sake.

What an amazing vegan restaurant. I would never have expected a vegan sushi roll to be my favorite ever (having been in many, many sushi restaurants), but the “secret weapon” roll in this place may be the best I ever had (or it’s at least top 3). It was sour from the pickled jalapeño at first, then spicy from the habanero sauce, and then when I got to the sweetness of the mango it completely blew my mind!
Apart from that, we tried “foxy scarlet”, which was pretty great, but the impression faded a bit after we tried the secret weapon. For a starter, we had “da kine ceviche” which was pretty standard - ceviche is usually tasty. For drinks we had their homemade lemonade and soda - they were way too sweet for us though. The restaurant uses quality ingredients and the staff is nice. I would 100% come back here again :D

Hand down the best vegan sushi spot in the Bay Area ! As a vegetarian it’s hard to like a sushi place because what you really get is avacado roll and if people get very creative - tofu roll - but Shizen does an outstanding job of creating vegetarian flavors that’ll blow your mind. You cannot really go wrong with anything you order here . Over the course of couple of visits we’ve tried pretty much all the speciality rolls and all of them are great . Our favorite is Boddy and Soul . Each of the flavors have been uniquely created and it’s hard to be disappointed with any of them.

Garlic edamame is also amazing . Highly recommend to anyone who’s looking for a no fuss place with outstanding food .

I'm usually used to regular sushi joints that are made with real fish so I wasn't sure what to expect with vegan sushi. This place however broke any preconceived notions. Everything was made really well. The tofu karage was on point with the texture and flavor. The nigiri sushi was pretty good as well. We got the Boddy and Soul specialty roll which was surprisingly good, it had a slight spicy kick to it which I liked. This is definitely a must visit spot for anyone that wants their sushi fix but is veg or vegan. They did a great job of incorporating that sushi experience.

Incredible sushi. Go for the rolls rather than the nigiri. Vibes are great too.

As of July 2024, reservations open up on Yelp 1 week in advance. I reserved a table for 2 on a Wednesday at 6:30pm. My friend and I split the yuba salad with dressing on the side and marinated shitake nigiri. I ordered the missing piece roll and my friend ordered the candlestick roll. The candlestick roll is a fun one to order because it comes with a small fire in the plate. The portions are on the smaller side but everything tasted delicious! This is a great dinner spot for those who have dietary restrictions, vegan or gluten free especially, or who, like me, prefer their sushi without raw fish. Note they are very strict on time limits and will ask you to leave once your 90 mins are up.

Phenomenal take on vegan sushi. It's extremely evident from the entire dining experience that the folks at Shizen have a very deep understanding of flavor and texture. We had five different rolls, two orders of marinated tomato nigiri and a couple of other appetizers. Can't recommend all of this enough. If you have friends visiting SF, bring them over, regardless of whether they're vegan or not. This place will not disappoint.

This place has a reputation for a reason. The food is innovative and exceptional. There is truly no wrong thing to order here, it’s all that good.

I know it’s a small space, but the only thing I’d change about the experience here is how pushy our server was about reminding us how much time we had remaining in our reservation. It felt like we were racing against the clock to get in and get out, when an hour and a half is a perfectly reasonable amount of time to not need to be reminded constantly. Every time they returned to our table they were saying “one hour left in your reservation,” “45 minutes left,” “30 minutes left,” etc. We get it.

I was expecting more. Food was hit or miss. The ramen not good at all, sushi rolls were good. Cocktails were ok, cheesecake dessert was way too sweet. Our server was great but the food runner was rude. Love the vibe of the restaurant however

I didn't get to try almost many highlights on account of sharing with someone with an allium sensitivity but even then it was quite good with attentive service. We sat at the bar but should've waited for a spot in the main room. I will definitely be back for more.

The shiitake was oke we didnt like to shredded tofu too much but every component of the missing piece was so so perfect… it comes together so so well like actually a carefully crafted masterpiece in a bite. We also got body and soul for take out its like their most fav order

Very good food, fun atmosphere. Prices are similar to what you would pay for standard sushi (~$19 for signature roll), but the taste and freshness of ingredients was amazing.
Service was a bit slow today, but it felt like they were not having the normal number of waiters, because sitting in front of the sushi chef table I could see them making the roles very fast, but they were simply waiting for waiter to pick them up and deliver to table.

Still, I would highly recommend this place!

While they had great & quick service we found that the sushi lacked flavour and was quite bland. Coming from Montreal we have some of the best vegan sushi spots so we had high hopes but were left very underwhelmed.

The good: if you're vegan or vegetarian, I think Shizen does a good job of elevating vegetables' flavor in the sushi context without doing imitations.

The meh: flavor-wise, I realized after the meal that I couldn't distinctly recall which roll was which aside from the Surprise Me roll because of the Russian roulette gimmick. Everything kind of blended together. It's good for what it is, but unless I'm going with a vegan or vegetarian friend, 10/10 times I'd choose regular sushi with fish.

The ugly: unfortunately, all accounts of rude service are accurate. We were constantly reminded of our time running out and when our 90 min were up, we had 3 different people in a span of 30 seconds come to tell us we had to leave so they could turn the table over for other guests. Fair enough, but it turned out there wasn't anyone waiting for our table. We spent 20 min at the entrance finishing our conversation and goodbyes with our friends only to see several empty tables with no one waiting. Why down guests' experience for no reason?

Phenomenal food and ambience! This vegan place is just heavenly. The service is always great. I absolutely love the boddy and soul sushi - it's better than ever other option on the menu by 10x. I usually just eat that (almost always). The litchi drink was amazing too, I'd pass on the Brussels sprouts thought (had tooo much vinegar).

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Shizen in San Francisco with a party of three for an early dinner. Arriving at the opening time of 4 PM, we were the first ones to be seated. It's important to note that Shizen requires a prior reservation, so be sure to plan ahead.

The reason for our visit was Shizen's reputation, being a Michelin 2019 recommended restaurant. Shizen specializes in vegan sushi, and while it's hard for vegan sushi to truly replace the traditional kind, Shizen comes remarkably close. Every dish we ordered was top-class, showcasing creativity and exquisite flavors that left us thoroughly impressed.

Despite the restaurant seeming a bit short-staffed, the service we received was excellent. The staff members who were there were incredibly polite and attentive, ensuring that our dining experience was smooth and enjoyable.

The ambiance of the restaurant is also worth mentioning. It provided a cozy and welcoming atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a leisurely meal. The meticulous presentation of the sushi added to the overall experience, making each dish a delight to both the eyes and the palate.

In conclusion, I would definitely recommend Shizen to anyone in San Francisco looking for exceptional vegan sushi. Whether you're a vegan or simply someone who enjoys innovative cuisine, Shizen offers a unique and satisfying dining experience that is well worth the visit.

A Vegan sushi experience 🌱🍣
The high-end food was very tasty and enjoyable, and there are many options that everyone can eat.
If you want to get a reservation, be sure to do it with time (maybe 1 week in advance). We were able to walk-in early and sit at the bar.
We tried the surprise ending and fortunately I did not get the spicy piece!

Heard about this place from a lot of friends and thought we'd visit this top rated place.
It's best if you get a reservation for this place since there is a decently long queue for it.

I wasn't too impressed by this place considering how highly revered it was. The prices were high while the quality of the sushi was good but not spectacular which I was expecting. I think this place is great for vegans and vegetarians who don't usually get good sushi since traditionally sushis are not vegetarian. However, for non-vegetarian folks I'm not sure why these sushi's would standout compared to other sushi joints. The service and ambiance was pretty good so full points there.
