An industrial-chic omakase destination that serves seasonal seafood sourced from Japan, plus sake.
One of my favorite omakase experiences I have had was at The Shota. Jason was our chef and we talked with him about his experience training in Japan and how he was a San Francisco native. Every course was amazing but I really enjoyed the sashimi course! Aside from the food the place is beautiful and the plating is so well thought out.

A special experience that highlights resourcefulness and unrelenting focus to details. Although I will not say the taste of everything I had was to my liking, I am grateful for the hospitable warmth that The Shota brought to my palate. Throughout the meal I could feel the Chef's desire to give me unique tastes while highlighting how important it is to stay in touch with the ingredients. The service is truly excellent, constantly trying make us feel pampered and appreciated for dining with them.

Came here for a birthday dinner. We walked into a shared lobby and then found their symbol above the door. We were greeted warmly by the staff and seated promptly. They have the same mannerisms as I’ve had from other omakases in the city. I appreciate seeing the fish used for the night. Everything was fresh and beautifully done. I appreciate a carafe option given we came on a work night.
I also appreciated the music playing in the background and the manga check book at the end with the bill.

The Shota offers some of the best nigiris that I have had. Their handling of the blue fin tuna is impeccable. I recommend trying all cuts of the tuna. The squid in uni sauce is another amazing dish. I usually do not care much for the rice in nigiri, but they take rice to a different level here. The rice is seasoned well. The presentation of each dish is gorgeous. Service is very attentive. I usually find sake a little too sweet for my taste, but the sommelier/sake person helped me find a couple things that are just right. The chef and staff keep the bantering going well. The interior is well decorated. However, during my dinner, a young chef/helper was scolded in front of the diners. I found that kind of off putting, and it kind of took away from the experience and vibe a little. I think the reprimand should have happened behind the scene. Otherwise, it could have been another perfect experience.

One of the best meals/experiences I've had. From the moment we walked in to when we left, everyone was super attentive and constantly checking in on us. We did the drink pairing and they were very generous in keeping each glass topped off for each course. The sake selection was truly fragrant and tasty!
Now the food was just superb. Amazing Japanese flavors and the presentation was sublime. There wasn't a single bite that I could criticize at all. It was enjoyed thoroughly by everyone in our dinner party! Hands down I would come again.

It was a truly enjoyable evening. From the minute I stepped inside, I felt welcome. Chef showed us the fish they will be serving for the evening. The sommelier was knowledgeable and we ordered a bottle made by Mr. Naohiko Noguchi, so-called "The God of Sake", as a living legendary sake Master Brewer. The sake was made without going thru pasteurization. It preserved the sweetness of the sake. Tasted a bit fruity as well. The omakase met expectation and was well executed. Most impressive sushi of the night was surprisingly the scallop. It was cut 80% thru vertically then horizontally. Because it was cut this way, the texture of the scallop was transformed. It literally melted in my mouth.
Well deserved 1-Star experience but came with a price, ~$1,000 for 2.

Dined at The Shota in July 2024 for their summer menu. This is my 4th time at The Shota.
Long story short - there is a clear reason why The Shota is the sole remaining Michelin-starred omakase in San Francisco. This is not a dig at all to amazing restaurants that have previously held a star(s) - I love you Omakase, Ju-Ni, & Wako - but rather, a reflection of The Shota's amazing consistency, warmth in service & team's knowledge, absolutely flawless execution of food & pairings, & in general bar none excellence of adhering to edomae style omakase while being innovative & creative.
I previously dined with The Shota & experienced their Fall 2022 menu, Fall 2023 menu, & Winter 2023 menu. Every experience has been 5 stars & dare I say 6. I've dined at omakases in Honolulu & Japan (Tokyo, Osaka, & Kyoto) ranging from Sushi Sho, Sushi Gyoshin Omakase, Sushi Ginza Onadera, Sushi Murayamna, Hihimanu Sushi, Gion Sasaki, Mizai, Harutaka, & more. The Shota proudly sits amongst the top of this pantheon. Of course, keep in mind omakase styles are different & to each chef, their own!
The Shota is nestled in a beautiful Art Deco building next to The Treasury (which has amazing cocktails btw) & in true New York IYKYK vibes, a glass door with bronze & gold accents is a gateway into a truly unique experience. Walking in, you're greeted with a wonderful cement floor to ceiling factory-like decor but contrasted with a pale white, CB2 style minimalist setup with a sweeping chef's counter.
Special shoutouts to Chef Seth Ridgway (who was on The Next Iron Chef Thailand season 2), Shar, & Tida. The team led by Chef Shota is absolutely spectacular & they are a key reason why I have returned & returned. For me, the people at The Shota are are standout reason of why you should go, & go again.
The team are all fountains of knowledge who are so warm, approachable, & chill that it feels like you are just hanging out with friends in your living room with a Netflix trashy show (or quality show) playing in the background. I really appreciate this ambiance of omakase where it's informative without being condescending & stand off-ish. The Shota is definitely "tshirt or polo & chinos vibes" versus "tuxedo & sit in a temple of silence formal vibes."
The menu is an absolute reflection of seasonality. Every time I've dined at The Shota they've had seafood that I've never had before or seafood that you think you know but is brand new because it's prepared in a very well thought out & executed technical manner.
Chawanmushi with shaved black Perigord truffles? Mhmmm. Instead of "dump a lot of truffles & expect fireworks," the dish is a representation of The Shota's clear, technical execution of a beautifully set egg custard with ingredients that add clear "nose, body, & finish" elements. Instead of overpowering each other & turning the dish into a 1 dimensional truffle bomb, rather, all of the ingredients work in harmony & elevate each other. It's a fantastic reflection of their ethos.
A gorgeous Hokkaido scallop (hottate) but made playful with a zest of yuzu & textural crunch from a fleur de sel? Yup.
Ora King salmon that melts in your mouth with freshly grated wasabi for that touch of spice & oomph? Yeah.
A "mini tasting menu" of different cuts of tuna (ahi) from amaki, chutoro, toro, to otoro. It's remarkable to taste the differences from least fat to most fat. On one side of the spectrum you taste the unique taste of fresh ahi & then it becomes progressively fattier & truly a wagyu of the sea where you borderline don't even need to chew & the ahi melts in your mouth.
A5 wagyu topped with Hokkaido uni & Ossetra caviar & gold leaf? Good God. The definition of indulgence & Jesus take the wheel.
The Shota also has absolutely spectacular sake pairings. I could write a separate review on how every sake served as a "cut" to the dish or "rounded it out" with secondary & tertiary notes. Also, the pairings are unexpected & out of left field which add a wonderful playful wink to the menu.
Thanks team.

Awesome experience here. The food is amazing. They don't try to impress you with expensive but boring ingredients like uni or caviar. Instead, they offer fresh, delicious fish and well-designed and thoughtful recipe. The servers/chefs are super nice and we had some good discussions on food.

This place is pretty inside and the food was fine, but for $800 omakase, I’m a little mad about it. Been here twice and forgot how forgettable the first time was.. till eating the same menu again 3 years later and wondering, wait why did we come back for this?!
Ok ok the fish is from Japan but like.. if I time it right, I could fly to Japan for $800. Maybe I missed the complexities or intricacies of each dish when the descriptions were given muffled, behind masks.. enthusiasm of staff was mixed, to say the least. EXCEPTION was young woman with glasses who deserves a promotion, a raise, and much praise.
30% of the dishes are above average good, 60% average good, and 10% below average (that kimbap looking thing specifically, among others..). Interior is intimate and pretty, but it’s inside a random building with a loud bar next door so vibes are slightly above average at best.
Overall I am very lukewarm. I would go if someone I don’t like very much is paying.

One of my fave fine dining experiences ever. The space itself is nothing to write home about, but everything other detail was exceptional. The service was warm, personalized, and seamless. The china and glassware was unique and beautiful. The drink pairings were well selected and generous (a little too generous the next morning…), and they had an extra pairing ready for two add-on pieces of sushi which was a nice touch. Our sushi chef was generous with his knowledge. Lastly, goes without saying but the meal itself was delicious, and the menu was well-paced and nicely organized.

Hands down the VERY best restaurant in San Francisco.
Everything from the moment one walks in until the moment one leaves the restaurant is a cherished experience.
From the seasonally-curated ultra fresh omakase to the champagne and sake pairings… the tiniest details are all perfectly thought out.
Given how crazy and volatile the world is… the fact that Shota continually, consistently deliver excellence day in and day out is truly amazing.
Nourishing for mind, body and spirit.

It just beats Sushi Sho in Honolulu for my personal favorite omakase! Simple ingredients, great quality, and you can taste the love from the chef here in each course. My taste is on the saltier side so I love how popping their rice is here.
Great the pace throughout whole dinner.
Staff here are fun and kind.
Very casual and very comfortable dining experience overall.

Amazing omakase and sushi chef expertise. The GM/bev manager was very over the top. She thought she was cute and friendly but she made our dinner awkward and less enjoyable. She needs to figure out how to cater to all guests the same and not make some regulars feel special and others feel ignored or awkward. She also spent so much time with others that several of our courses went by without the drink pairing. Overall the meal was amazing because of the food. She dragged the rest of the experience down.

I honestly can’t believe I’m writing this tonight but here I am writing about MY PERSONAL experience that I experienced today while eating here.(2/16/24) If I was giving a review of just the food today hands down this would have been a 5-star review so if your reading this to see if this restaurant is worth your money and time it absolutely is and you can stop reading here. But unfortunately for me today when I sat down to eat here at their 8pm time and I was gravely disappointed in the customer service I mean I WAS STUNNED. At first everything was fine but I right away noticed the waitress was friends with one of the customers sitting right next time me and as they kept ordered sake (alcohol) the waitress also took shots with them and I don’t mean just one shared rounded I mean WAY passed 5 maybe even closer to 10 shots and I wish I was exaggerating but unfortunately for me I watched her take shot after shot and she became more and more loud with every round. She was obviously intoxicated and I even overheard the second waitress ask her in the back if she was okay because she was being so loud I’m sure EVERYONE in the restaurant heard her yells. I’m just disappointed because I understand these are her friends dinning here while she’s working and she wants to join in on the fun but she’s at work and I’m sorry but this was very unprofessional AND THE ONE TIME I’m here because I’m here on vacation and I probably will not come back to the city in a long time and this absolutely ruined my experience and I’m genuinely devastated, I can’t believe I paid what I paid to have the customer service be so horrible and genuinely ruin my experience. My ONE TIME coming here was not what I expected. If you read this I hope your experience is nothing like mine because it makes me so sad that this was my experience.

Lovely experience. Minimalist aesthetic. Engaged, warm, and fun staff. Great service. High touch. Went above and beyond remembering little details about us throughout the night.
The food was delicious, fresh, beautiful, fun, and educational. So many things stand out but need to check the QR code to write the names. The sake pairing was just as lovely! The crystal and platter aesthetic was beautiful and I wanted to steal a lot of it and bring it home. They counted the spoons 😜
So grateful. Thank you 💕💕✨✨

I went to The Shota with a friend of mine for my birthday dinner and I wasn't disappointed.
We both picked the omakase experience and added some supplements and a la carte items throughout the experience. Their service was exceptional. Let's talk about the service first - it was exceptional. Any small detail you could think of, they provided service for that - taking care of your coat, getting you seated, putting the napkin on your lap, pourig drinks, cleaning the plates after every sample... you name it. The staff was very friendly.
The place was packed when we went. There was only bar dining experience from what I could tell, but still, each group was seated far apart that it felt like a private dining experience. The music choicd and the ambiance were great as well.
Now let's talk about the food. Here is all that we got per person -
1. Aburi Toro (seared tuna belly)
2. Uni
3. Mategai (razor clam)
4. Hamo (conger eel)
5. Tako sakura ni (japanese octopus)
6. Asari & Soramame (neck clam & Fava beans)
7. Kanpachi, hon masu & shiro ika (young amberjack, cherry trout, white squid)
8. Kasugodai (young sea bream)
9. Hotate (Hokkaido sea scallop)
10. Uni (Hokkaido sea urchin)
11. Kamasu (baracuda)
12. Ayu (sweetfish)
13. Honmaguro akami (lean bluefin tuna)
14. Honmaguro Toro (faty bluefin tuna)
15. Saba (mackerel)
16. Anago (sea water eel)
17. Honmaguro temaki (bluefin tuna handroll)
18. Akadashi (aged miso soup)
19. Tamago (savory egg custard)
20. Hojicha (roasted green tea)
21. Hokkaido ensui uni
We also ordered a bottle of Senkin classic muku, tochigi (sake).
The presentation of the food was amazing. The plating was very vibrant and appealing, and every cut of the fish that we tried was super fresh. Miso soup, temaki, and mategai were okay (have had better), but everything else was delicious. Uni and tuna were buttery, smooth, and so light that it would melt the moment you put it in your mouth.
They encourage you to use your hands instead of chopsticks for eating fish, so they provide you with wet napkin to clean your hands.
Overall, it was a great dining experience. I knew when I made my reservation that they don't do anything special for any sort of celebrations (except lighting a candle towards the end so you can make a wish), so keep that in mind when you make your booking.

Had my birthday dinner here and everything was perfect!! Not only was the food very fresh and delicious, it was absolutely an art, service was awesome, could tell that our chef and waitress were very passionate about their job. The overall vibe of this place I’d say it’s both traditional and modern Japanese, they even played classic Nintendo music ( animal crossing new horizon and super Mario’s !) loved it sooooooo much a big ++++ for me!

Food was great, fresh, and creative. The chef was so attentive and patiently described each dish to the customer.
However there is a female staff (dont know her name but she was the only female staff tonight) and she had a serious attitude problem and needs to be trained. I asked for tea and cold water and she came back with only tea (which is fine I can ask for water again). I tasted the tea and it tastes like hot water so I asked her is this really tea to which she insisted it is. I tell her it taste like plain hot water and she keeps insisting its tea. I asked her to get me another tea because i am a tea drinker and i am 100% sure it is NOT tea. She asks if I want hot water instead and Im thinking I asked for tea but got hot water so why would I want hot water? Thankfully another waiter came back with a REAL cup of tea and this time it actually tastes like tea. Pretty sure she forgot to brew the tea and not to mention bring me the water (had to ask a different waiter for it). The female staff never came back to apologize. When the meal ended, she told us that our meal was over and we can go whenever we want so we decide to finish our tea first but within 1 min, she came back and repeated what she said before. Basically telling us to GTFO. If I am paying 20% service fee I don't need to deal with an attitude like hers.

Look no further. This is the best omakase in SF, hands down (@others: I'm sorry I love you all too, but The Shota is simply too good). The quality of fish, ambiance, creativity, service, and beauty are all unrivaled. Come hungry, seriously. You're gonna want to order the add-ons from the a la carte menu at the end.

I have been to many highly rated omakase restaurants across the world, and The Shota is hands down my favorite. It’s hard to describe everything amazing about this place, but it really is a breath of fresh air. I respect everything - the attention to detail, the food, the atmosphere, etc. The chef is humble and friendly and makes you feel comfortable, while still upholding the high standards that good sushi needs. It is rare to find somewhere that isn’t elitist but still upholds the virtues of tradition, and expresses creativity while prioritizing flavor and balance.
It feels very considerate of the guest’s experience, versus expecting you to blindly appreciate extravagance, innovation or tradition. The fish selection is always balanced between fatty, mild and flavorful, and the courses and side dishes are top notch and leave you satisfied. The flavors are balanced and delicious (rich, sour, umami, salty, sweet, etc.) and everything is thoughtful and harmonious. The fish’ flavor and texture are great, and the toppings complement the fish instead of being distracting. The details are wonderful, from the ginger, wasabi, to the rice.
The decor is also clean without being sterile, and there are cute and creative touches like a rose on Valentine’s Day, and the check given to you in manga and the anime music remixed in jazzy/classy styles. The Shota is a wonderful and memorable restaurant, and if you enjoy good sushi, I am sure you will love it here!

Yeah, best sushi Ive ever had, period. Even as a "1 michelin star level" I think this resteraunt deserves all its 5 stars. Service is completely perfect. Its not grating, its not annoying (as is a typical complaint from higher class resteraunts), they come at the pefrct time to refill your water and leave, simple as that. Food it goes without saying, amazing. We got the winter fish course, and Its just mwuah perfect. Personal favorites of mine where the squid noodles, and the barracuda sushi, so packed with flavor its actually insane. Best part of all,the meal is very light! It fills you up, but doesnt weight you down. Also: Get. The.Wagyu. This wagyu option was not only the best wagyu ive ever had, its also the best sushi ive ever had, period. Good lord, even nearly 2 weeks later I can still perfectly feel its flavor. Wish I could taste it again.
Not sure if staff reads this, but if they do: Kudos! I hope to see this resteraunt in the page amongst other fellow 2 stars :) Cannot imagine why they are holding back on that second star!

3 stars for the customer service and environment - but then, keep in mind they charge 20% mandatory service fees so they’re just doing their job. However, it’s just not great value. When I pay $300+ for an omakase, I expect to get sea urchin and caviar included, but they actually would charge another $60-90 for sea urchin / caviar / truffle. Wish I had known this before visiting.

First off, parking, the nearest public parking is St Mary's, 2 blocks UPHILL from the restaurant. Best to inform your guest if they plan on wearing heels.
Once inside, you'll be welcomed in and can take a seat if anyone is late.
Onto the menu, all of the fish are flown in from Toyosu market. The summer menu in particular has ayu and our chef stated that the winter à la carte can include shirako, so plan accordingly if you're looking for something specific. At the time, the menu did not include abalone in any of the dishes.
Standouts for me were the kabocha puree and tako appetizers, golden snapper nigiri, ribboned squid sashimi with uni sauce, and the hoji cha dessert.
The A5 wagyu we had this time was from Miyazaki and had a BMS score of 10 on the certificate.
Highly recommend if you're looking for traditional edomae sushi with small deviations that make a big splash.

unbelievably attentive and courteous staff, unbelievably decadent food. the chefs also enjoy educating about why each cut of fish is chosen and where it was procured, along with fun photos! this was the most memorable and delicious omakase experience of my life. the attention to detail is a marvel to behold, down to the unique and beautiful flatware that accompanies every course. oh, and the uni! you haven't had uni until you've tried it here.

Phenomenal experience eating here. The setting is intimate with contemporary decor, all seats are counter seats. The chefs are very approchable and friendly - we learned about the food as well as enjoying eating it. The drinks pairing was very nice as well - a good mix of wine and sake and was well chosen with the dishes. Would definitely come back!

The food and the chef (Seth) were excellent! The flavors for the sushi were creative, balanced, and made to taste. Best Omakase I've had!

We came from out of town for a special anniversary trip to the west coast and this was one of the highlights ! The service was top notch without being stuffy and the food was as beautiful as it was delicious. You will not be disappointed with the beverage pairing either. Hands down, the best omakase of our life and worth the splurge.

We had a wonderful dinner experience here. The food was incredible and the service was impeccable. Wonderful conversation and even a very informative tuna anatomy lesson from the staff that we quite enjoyed. The choice of ambiance music was also very well curated and truly enhanced our already fantastic dining experience. Would definitely recommend!

The Shota took my expectations and absolutely blew them out of the water.
From the flavour and plating to the service and personality of the staff, everything was spectacular. Every serving of nigiri was sublime. From the more nuanced plates, every component had a reason for being there. The more complex dishes allowed you to explore multiple flavour combinations, but every single item stood alone as well.
If I think back on my favorite bites... The firefly squid with perfect seasoning, the squid noodle in uni sauce, the fatty tuna that melted in your mouth, the house marinated roe that I could crush a bowl of... I could go on and on about every plate, but this review is already getting out of hand.
You will not regret dining at the Shota whether you live in SF or are visiting. Treat yourself.

I have visited the Shota for 5 times now, ever since two months after their openings.
Though they are revising their menus to keep up with michelin ratings, it never took away how fresh and how elegant their food is. I am amazed every time and have a great time with the chefs and servers. looking forward to my next visit.

First of all, congrats to them for their first Michelin star and roaring success despite opening almost right before COVID began. My expectations for sushi are probably higher than they should be, so I came with pretty high expectations (especially given the newness of the restaurant and the big ticket price), and The Shota did not disappoint.
Shota-san came to SF having previously worked at Morimoto in Napa, and brought Seth (my favorite!) with him to open his first namesake restaurant. The pictures don't do the food justice.. beautiful, fresh, flavorful and some of the highest quality out there. A few things that make The Shota stand out from other top tier restaurants in the area like Kusakabe, Omakase, etc., is the service. The Shota is serious about their food, professional in their mannerisms but still manages to present a warm, family vibe when you're dining there. The chefs are knowledgable, attentive, and take a genuine interest in getting to know their clientele.
There was a birthday while we were there and the birthday boy knew one of the sushi chefs, Seth and it was clear how they care for those they consider friends and family (he got a ridiculous amount of caviar and continuously flowing alcohol). I ended up getting the restaurant to sing happy birthday to him and they thanked me by giving me endless sake. That example is reminiscent of the ambiance -- it's not rowdy and still maintains that Japanese elegance, but isn't so stuffy that you feel uncomfortable being yourself and chatting up your neighbors or sushi chef.
Shota-san also brings out the fish head that they've brought in for that week, I've had a lot of sushi but I've somehow never seen a tuna head in person.. it's... huge. They also have a model tuna fish in the back which they use to walk you through which cuts come from where so you have an actual understanding of what you're eating. It's clear that they know their stuff and their passion shows through when they're going through the explanations of the dishes and cuts of fish.
Probably my new favorite sushi restaurant in SF.

This was my first omakase experience, and after trying a couple other spots in SF, I can confidently say that the Shota was worth every penny. The dishes were so unique and delicious, and the staff are super friendly and attentive - right down to noticing that one of our party was left handed and subtly switching the orientation of everything in front of them. For bonus points, ask about their little tuna fish model that they have on display behind the chefs - they're very proud of it!

How can you not like this place? It's pricey, but that comes with the quality. The food is top notch, the service is wonderful. There are a few one Michelin starred sushi restaurants in SF. This one is easily my favorite, thus far. I hope they get that second star.

Well, I broke a personal rule and took an Omicron risk and dined in because I need to hit all the Michelin stars in the city.
Very enjoyable. Everything was creative and well-made and I had time to eat it slowly and really experience it. Sake pairings were varied (and included champagne, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Tokaji).

Had one of the most amazing omakase experiences here a few days ago. The aged tuna is absolutely divine and will redefine the experience of having sushi. The wagyu add-on was amazing as was the barracuda. Basically everything was amazing and I’m sure this place will have a Michelin star soon (edit: it has one star!). Service is fantastic, seeing the preparation is great and I enjoyed the explanation of the meal and fish.

I remember when this was a lunch spot in the FiDi and now it's a fancy sushi spot. It's still very minimalist and white, just more upscale now, and even more minimalist with the variety of ceramic pots on the shelves being one of the only decorative elements in the space. We came to celebrate our anniversary and indulged in a $275 omakase.
We were greeted with friendly smiles and they pushed our chairs in once we were seated in the padded bar stools, something I've always appreciated because there is no graceful way to scooch yourself in on a high chair. There was not only a hot towel, but also a towel ball for the sushi courses.
To start, the appetizer trio was beautifully presented in a woven basket and adorned with golden mesh leaves.
Chawanmushi - steamed egg:
Great! silky, custardy egg soup with mushrooms and meaty fish
Sawara - Spanish mackerel:
Great! succulent and plump
Hotate - scallop:
Excellent! sliced into a checkerboard and topped with a bit of sea salt
Ji Kinmedai - golden big eye snapper:
Great! meaty and toped with a dollop of chive seasoning
Katsuo & Shiro Ika - seared tuna with dip, squid noodles with uni sauce:
Good! Three pieces of tuna were browned outside and red on the inside, went well with the katsuobushi and chive dip. The squid and carved radish on the side wasn't necessary, but presented nicely.
The squid noodles in uni sauce were delicious. After we finished the noodles, the chef offers a ball of seasoned rice to help polish off the uni sauce.
Next we were presented with a trio of beautiful tuna, as well as the giant tuna head. Apparently the guy was 300 pounds, and then was aged for 3 weeks. I tried my best to refrain from naming the tuna.
Honmaguro Akami - lean tuna:
Good! delicious, shiny and blood red
Honmaguro Toro - belly fat tuna:
Great! can't go wrong with fatty tuna
Honmaguro Temaki - tuna handroll:
Great! tasty tuna mix with perfectly crisp seaweed. Mine unraveled a bit when I put it on the plate to take a photo of it, so chef put the next handroll directly on my plate as long as I promised to give one handroll to Mr. Joy. What a fun chef!
Ebi & Uni - shrimp & sea urchin:
Good! crispy fried shrimp with a side of shiso leaf and lemon wedge The uni nigiri was on a bed of salmon roe. I could have used a little more rice to balance out the salty roe.
Kohada - gizzard shad:
Great! meaty silver skinned fish
Anago - saltwater eel:
Great! very tender teriyaki eel
Akadashi & Inari - miso soup & sushi in tofu skin:
Okay! soy broth and sweet tofu skin to taper off the savory dishes
Hojicha - roasted green tea ice cream:
Good: refreshing and cool green tea flavor with chestnut shavings
Our chef concluded the meal with a toast in green jade goblets and a single candle on the side.
Lastly, our bill arrived in a Japanese comic about a dude named Shota.
The sushi was great, and the service might have been even better. When I was hopping off my stool, our waitress was actually hurrying over to give me a hand. Everyone was not only accommodating, but also very entertaining.

Easily one of my favorite omakase place in SF! It was our first time to celebrate a special occasion and looking forward to dining with friends very soon. All the dishes were spectacular and Chef Shota explains the dishes in depth. Refreshing and minimalist atmosphere and all the staffs were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Highly recommend!

The fish were very fresh and delicious. They add something special to each nigiri, be it something simple like seasoning, or more creative like soy curing. Each dish tasted unique and their attention to detail and quality truly showed.
Service was perfect. Our chef was very friendly, informative, and warm. He even gave us a complimentary nigiri which he described as "the sum of his experience", which was very touching. I recognised the head chef from an Eater video, and he was happy to take a picture with me which was also very nice.
Some other patrons might be loud when talking to the chefs, but personally I see it as a special connection omakase offers.
Coming here is definitely a pricey experience, but if it's a special day, I'd say it's worth it.

Easily one of my favorite high-end omakase meal in the city. The ambiance is quiet and clean with their all white decor. The staff is exceptional and the food is even better! The aesthetics of the food delivery from plating to the dishware always leaves me wanting more when the meal is over. Fresh fish, friendly staff, amazing experience — what more is there to ask for? Not my first time and definitely won’t be my last 😛

Literally sitting here stuffed and was like, "Tiff - write your review"
(+) I've had YUBU by The Shota twice, and both times were incredible experiences.
(+) Treasure Box - super cute little double decker container with uni, negi toro, unagi, ikura, and special rice with tamago bits.
(+) Treasure Box comes with miso soup and seaweed.
(-) It only comes with 2 seaweed sheets, which is definitely not enough. Luckily we always have some nori in the house, so we wound up using our own.
(+) Inari Set - YUM, and so cute! 4 piece inari - lean fatty tuna, SO GOOD
(+) Crab with tobiko inari - really good, also had a layer of avocado in it. Nice lil' surprise.
(+) Crispy Shrimp inari - good, the shrimp aren't necessary crispy by the time they get to you, and there was a little too much sauce on it, but still good.
(+) Mushroom inari - super good. I love those lil' mushrooms; they're so cute!
I also ordered it for delivery; it got to me a nice 6 minutes before the estimated time. Great delivery experience.

Plenty of care and attention goes into the gorgeous Takara “treasure” box and the elaborate inari. Premium ingredients and the caviar supplement, plus the add-on of toro and ikura inari were a very abundant and luxurious meal. Service was kind. Overall a fine meal option and it delivers the value you expect from this level of pricing.

Of the many omakase restaurants in this city (and there are many of them), this relatively newcomer (Nov 2018) is one of our all-time favorite. The attention to detail, the freshness and flavors all stand out. We splurged for the special Uni menu which gives us 6 extra Uni courses from Hokkaido - definitely worth it.

The Shota is easily the swankiest omakase spot I've experienced in the city. Although the interior design is beautiful, I found it a bit cold and intimidating. I didn't feel the warm welcome that I typically receive during an omakase, which was so surprising because I feel like it's the opposite of other reviews. Maybe it was because we were seated at the end? I'm not sure, but I just didn't feel like we (The Shota and I) vibed at all. I do love how they paid great attention to every last detail - we even get to select our own set of chopsticks. I opted for the pink - DUH!
Our chef was informative, he even pulled out a fish diagram at one point to show us which part we're eating-- but again, I didn't feel that we shared any kind of special bond with him. It was also difficult to hear at times, and it felt like we were just so far from him.
The course changes were sometimes overwhelming -- with a couple pairs of hands taking and placing things in front of us simultaneously. Shamefully, I even had one course where I had such a hard time picking up the food with my pink chopsticks.
I won't go into details about the courses, since it changes, but I will say that everything I had was delicious. I was most impressed by the beautiful presentation of some of the courses and the uni pate sandwich.
I went for the uni hand roll supplement, which was delightful, but also a tad forgetful.
The signed menu as a parting gift is a nice touch.
I came in knowing that this meal would come with a hefty check, and I do feel that it was worth the experience. It is unlike any other omakase places in the city. I think it is worth a try, especially for a special occasion.
Tip: I had some difficulty with locating the restaurant because the entrance is actually inside of a building.

Prob the most amazing Japanese place in SF. Best sake I have ever had. Amazed by the attention to detail, delicate flavors, and attentive staff. Japanese truffles with caviar and sushi ... :) So much flavor and many pleasant aromas without being overwhelming. Reservations a must.

What can I say about this fine Japanese restaurant.. the quality of food speaks for itself. For the omakase courses, you must get either caviar or white truffle, or both! It will give you better tasting. I also had wagyu beef with uni at the end.. it is so good that it should be the last piece tasted in my mouth.

Became to my top 10 Japanese restaurant in city now! Open at November 2018, getting more and more popular, and also hard to make a reservation then. It's worth a shot for sure! The chef is knowledgeable about Japanese cooking method and will answer all ours questions in easy understanding way. The food decorations are amazing! Food presentation is stunning! Can not miss this one if you are a sushi lover!

Pretty amazing sushi tasting with sake pairing. Great views of your personal chef preparing food right at the counter. Had great variety of fish as well as soups and breads. Descriptions don’t do it justice, pictures are slightly better. But nothing like being there taking in the flavors.
Started out with a waffle sandwich served in golden globe. Bite down into it and taste the squishy delicious sea urchin. Yum. Take a sip of refreshing citrusy sake. And then the meal begins.
Wide array of fish I had never heard of before. They came out one after the other each with a pairing of sake. There was a delicious eel served under a smoke globe. Was a visual delight and had a tender Smokey flavor. I won’t go on. You get the picture. Quite nice sushi restaurant.
One thing to note is that your sushi chef can make a huge difference. Ours was fine but definitely not talkative. Felt very sterile compared to the more jovial experiences that I’ve had at other places.

The dishes are beautiful tasty surprises. We loved that they offer a sake, but also a tea pairing (might only be on weekends). If I were to compare the food to the omakase menus in town, the Shota wouldn’t win. We were seated at the side bar (despite reserving months in advance), which might not have offered us the full experience

Amazing omakase experience with kaiseki touch to it as well as French influence. This is not your traditional sushi omakase restaurant. Highly recommend trying this restaurant - bring a special someone on a date here!
We were lucky to have been served by Chef Shota. Just watching him work was like watching a show - every move done so precisely and delicately. The flavors, ingredients, and presentation of every dish was impeccable. There were definitely a few dishes that were surprising and tasted out of this world. Every dish was very well thought out and the combined flavors created many great moments in my mouth.
Price of the menu was $150/person and the sake pairing which was really worth it is $80/person. I would not recommend the tea pairing...it's really good but didn't seem to elevate the food more, felt quite separate, so if you want tea, I would just order a tea instead of the tea pairing.
Ambiance is more on the romantic side. I personally prefer warmer lighting when it comes to sushi omakase but doesn't deter me from going back to The Shota.
