Wow… what a gem!
We absolutely loved this spot.
For starters, the ambiance is great — it’s cozy and lively too.
The servers were warm and friendly (especially considering we got there right as they were closing up!)
And the food… well, it was incredible. The fish was delectable, and every dish was scrumptious.
Personal favs were the sushi cones (crab and tuna) which are also on special during happy hour @ the end of night ($5)
Gyoza had an incredible pesto flavour to it — who woulda thought to combine them?!
We will definitely be back.

Omakase experience. Excellent food and conversation. The chef was detailed in the food, region the food was sourced from, and why they were ordered in the experience. Our host provided a lot of detail on each sake before pouring. Pricy but the entire dinner was ~2.5 hours and unrushed. Totally of about 18 distinct dishes so it felt like a good value all things considered.

My first Omakase experience and what a delight. This raised the bar for sushi. It’s obvious how much of an art sushi making is when you go to this place. I remember being in Tokyo and locals telling me that sushi was considered high end or fine dining which didn’t make sense to me at the time. Now going to an Omakase I really understand the difference between the art of sushi making and basic sushi. Both are good but they’re very different.

Dined at Sushi Hon last night and it’s nothing short of a culinary journey. Each dish was meticulously prepared and presented, it’s an intimate showcase of chef Yong’s artistry and expertise. The ingredients are of the highest quality, the pacing is just right and service was impeccable (shout out to Mac & Gigi, thank you guys so much!). We added the premium supplement which was so worth it. 22 course omakase for $170 is a steal for such a memorable experience, we will definitely be back!

My partner and I were excited to try our first omakase experience. I saw a good review of this place and made a reservation right away (over a month in advance 😅).
We went on a Sunday night, early at 5:30 pm. We were the 4th couple to arrive. The staff greeted us warmly and directed us to our seats. Everything was delicious. I normally don't eat eggplant, but enjoyed the dish they served. I also ended up getting the beverage pairing. It was my first time having that much sake. It was interesting how different, but pleasant it was compared to my usual, which is wine.
We both left feeling full, but not overly so.
Highly recommended.

Sushi Hon in San Francisco is an amazing gem nestled in the heart of mission District, offering an unforgettable culinary journey for sushi enthusiasts. From the moment you enter, you're greeted with a warm ambiance that blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort. I've been to many sushi restaurants in SF and every dish was truly wonderful.
The attention to detail at Sushi Hon is evident in every aspect of the dining experience. The decor is sleek yet cozy, with subtle nods to Japanese culture through carefully chosen artwork and furnishings. The intimate seating arrangement ensures that each guest receives personalized attention from the attentive and knowledgeable.
My favorites of the night are:
Zuke Chu-Toro ,Bincho tataki , Zuke masunozuke ( I would eat 100 of these if I could!)
The food was beyond fresh, each piece a masterpiece of flavor and presentation. The staff “GG” was attentive, knowledgeable, and made my dining experience truly memorable. Especially “Chef Yong! “ He is really friendly, kind and accommodating. He explained me in every single detail of sushi. Great for special occasions or if you just want an amazing meal. Definitely a must-visit for sushi connoisseurs.

Genuinely the worst Omekasa I have ever had, and somehow one of the most expensive. Dinner for 2 supplemental + alcohol was $800 with tip. So, it's pricing itself with the best. We reserved a sushi bar seat, when we arrived, they say us at a table and told us the bar was closed. That's ... Fine. We were then seated next to the loudest BOOM BOX blasting music, genuinely dumb struck by that decision, when I think omakase, I think loud music, we had to request to change seats because the speaker was a foot before my chair. Rip the person who took our seats after we moved. The sushi itself was mostly good with the single exception of spoiled Uni which I literally ran to the restroom to spit out. Other than the literal spoiled fish the meal was good I guess. 1.5/10, avoid like the plague. Worst in the city, does not justify $800

One of the BEST omakase experiences we ever had!
My husband and I celebrated our official wedding anniversary at Sushi Hon. Thanks to their lunch service, we were able to enjoy fine dining during the day while the toddler was at school. We weren't expecting much since it was during lunchtime, but we were completely blown away by the quality of the food and service.
Chef Yong was one of the most creative, down to earth, personable, and thoughtful chefs we've ever interacted with.
He not only blessed our senses of sight, taste, smell, and touch with beautifully presented dishes, perfectly balanced ingredients (especially rice), and amazing sushi/hand rolls, but also complemented our hearing and hearts with his passion for sushi, detail behind how he prepares each ingredient and menu, and his philosophy behind serving the best food and meeting each customer at their eye level.
We will definitely come back again, and we highly recommend taking a visit to Sushi Hon if you haven't already.

A place has to be egregiously bad for me to bother writing a bad review, but this one definitely cleared the bar. This was a frustrating and awful dining experience that got worse as the night wore on. We were dressed appropriately for a normal SF outdoor dining experience, expecting it to be a little brisk, but the restaurant had zero functioning heat lamps so it was pretty frigid. It took ages for us to even be given menus, forever for our order to be taken. Food was dropped agonizingly slowly, at times we waited almost 40+ minutes between courses. The nigiri was fine, but certain courses were pretty disappointing. The uni tofu came with a smudge of uni (in images from past diners, this dish apparently used to come with two whole pieces of uni—shrinkflation at work). With the torturously slow service, this omakase took from 7pm-10:30pm and by then all four of us were actually freezing. This is sushi, not Noma. It should not take 3.5 hours to deliver twelve pieces of nigiri and a handful of other bites. Unless you’re dining inside, save yourself the hypothermia and go elsewhere.

We ordered omakase to-go for Father's day, when I arrived the chef was preparing our order, he explained in detail the origin of the fish and how it is prepared. I am in awe of the chef's expertise as I watch him slice the fish with precision and prepare the dishes with an artistic flare. The hostess was warm and welcoming, I truly feel the "omotenashi" that encompass authentic Japanese customer service.
The to-go boxes were also meticulously put together, it even comes with a thoughtful note to explain the order of enjoying the dishes. The sushi is fresh, full of umami and you can tell a lot of thought has gone into the perfect combination of ingredients and flavor in each piece of nigiri. My husband and I really enjoyed the meal even though we have to bring it home. I can imagine the experience will be even more elevated if we eat at Sushi Hon. We have tried many places in the city but Sushi Hon is the only one that brings us back to the memories of authentic sushi in Japan. Thank you Sushi Hon!

I’m a firm believer in sushi rice being as important, if not more so, than the fish, and I was a big fan of how they make it at Sushi Hon. Chef Yong proudly declared that he washes the rice for an hour the night before to remove extra starch. Combined with a bold dark-light vinegar ratio, I thought that the perfectly defined rice grains and bright acid made for an incredible nigiri base.
Though I am team vinegar, I could see their liberal use being a bit much for certain palates. The mozuku starter, for example, was silky seaweed strands in a sweet vinegar broth that was like a refined gut shot. And a decadent uni and chopped toro rice bowl supplement shared the stage equally with the tangy vinegar rice. No complaints from my sour-loving palate though.
Let’s not forget the nigiri. Some highlights for me included the hotate, or fresh scallop from Hokkaido, carefully scored to yield both a visually impressive and textured bite. Seared 14-day aged toro (fatty tuna) and A5 wagyu nigiris, perfectly melted in their respective fatty goodness. And the engawa (fluke fin) nigiri supplement had a nice snappy chew to it.
After the many nigiri courses, an early summer corn tomato jelly “ceviche” was a refreshing palette cleanser. And dessert was a creamy, but not too sweet, kinako panna cotta that had a savory touch from the toasted soybean.
The inviting counter service from Chef Yong also made the meal more memorable. He enthusiastically shared his sushi knowledge and preparation details, and his proud, yet humble energy was infectious. He also excitedly gave us a taste of the in-house MG rice lager.
Dinner edomae omakase starts at $135 for 18 dishes, 10 of which are nigiri. And I appreciated that the omakase menu was actually printed out beforehand so you could plan and pace yourself. Sushi Hon also offers a smaller lunch omakase for $65, and they do delivery as well.

The restaurant’s hours are listed until 3PM. After calling in prior to confirm, we made our way there and arrived at 2:35 PM. We were then told the server already left and that we couldn’t eat anymore. Pretty disappointed by the unreliability of this place on the day I graduated from UC Berkeley.

Finally getting around to this but wow! One of the best omakase experiences I’ve had outside of Japan. From the friendly greeting by the staff to the manager-san checking on and serving the guests alongside the waitstaff, the service is indicative of true Japanese hospitality.
We decided on a delicious bottle of Junmai Daiginjo Sake to accompany the Valentine’s day menu!
The fish was an amazing experience around the world with fish from Japan, NZ, Spain, Jeju and beyond. All expertly put together by the chef who had a great personality! It’s my personal preference when you can meet and chat with the chef as he prepares the course.
Also for all the sushi lovers, the fresh ginger was so good we had to get refills because we kept snacking on it.

My girlfriend and I visited last year and it was the best omakase experience we ever had. 5/5 rating we would have given it then. The food and service were so top tier so we were easily excited to come back this past weekend.
Unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed with the meal experience this time around. For a near $500 meal (2x omakase, 1 bottle of wine, tax and tip), they were bringing out dishes out of order, the service was slow, and the worst part was that the rice was stale and dry! I’m not sure if it was underseasoned or undercooked, but it really took away from the high quality fish. My partner and I also noticed big differences in each bite, as she commented on tasting wasabi on certain nigiri where I didn’t (and vice versa).
In a city that has so many good omakase options, we probably won’t be coming back since it was so disappointing.

We went there for the date night and the experience was great. The services is phenomenon because the server is so helpful and active.

Overall, great experience with great food.

Great dinner experience. Thank you for superb food. The vinegar for the sushi rice is different but good too. We had a good time. The people at adjacent table probably had too much alcohol and were a little loud. Overall it looks like a small operation with two waitstaff and one sushi chef and a couple more in the back kitchen.

The food was AMAZING - Chef Jay prepared our exclusive omakase menu with a deft hand and thoughtful touch. My favorite items were the Spanish tuna and Tofu Custard. Chef Jay truly provided exceptional care for our meal and was graciously friendly. Our waiter was also extremely thoughtful and they catered to my partner's left handed preference without saying a word. We dined on Sunday evening and the ambience was quiet yet enthralling. Pros: Dope Sake, delicious food, perfect rice, good fish. Service dialed. Love it.
Cons: Allergy deviation can be lacking. Dressing of fish can be reppeatative. Sake pairing: (while some of the best food sake pairing) One, does not deviate with allergies, so you can miss out on how excellent the pairing is. Two, can be way too heavy of pours. For example, a full pour for a two bite a course into another full pour.

If you go, make sure to get seating at the bar - otherwise you'll get a bunch of your sushi all at once rather than a piece at a time per normal omakase experience. I disliked how cold the rice got by the time all the sushi was made and placed before me - I've never had cold rice omakase before in all the times I've gone in NYC. Rice was also a little more mushy than I liked. The quality of the sushi was superb and pairing of flavors was good/as expected of omakase. The only quality issue was the scallop which was fishy/clearly off. Not sure if it was purposeful but the Uni was not cleanly taken out so it was a mushy mess on the rice so that impacted the visual (but flavor was still on point). Service was good and vibe was on point for a restaurant (but a bit noisy & impersonal for omakase which is meant to be more personal chef/customer experience). Overall these detracted from the 5 stars they would otherwise get.

Delicious fish and a wonderful evening. The yellow tail and Spanish mackerel were our favorite. We had the omakase with the sake pairing. I've never really been impressed with a pairing (it's good sake so I will like it no matter what I'm eating :)), but some of these combos were spot on.
We particularly loved the chef and he was extremely personable! He even came out to explain one course on the menu. Our server was very good and lightened the mood, so it did not feel stuffy.
Only one note - change the music! They had some kind of smooth jazz/Kenny G playing all night. Anything would be better. Maybe something rooted in San. Francisco jazz history? Could sill be instrumental but it would not feel like you are at a mall, and contribute to the somewhat muted and milktoast atmosphere of the restaurant.
We are really happy we got to experience the great food and service!

Came here on a Monday evening with last minute reservations at 6:15pm. We made the reservations on OpenTable just 45 minutes before the seating, and they had it available yay! We came with a party of 6 so we weren’t easily able to sit at the bar, but it was a good dinner with good people nonetheless. The omakase was $115 per person not including tax and tips, but is reasonably priced compared to other spots in the city. We didn’t opt in for the supplements since most people were full, but if I was paying myself, I would have! They had uni and a5 wagyu on there that I definitely would’ve liked to try. The miso at the end was very pleasant after all that rice, and the soy bean panna cotta was so perfectly made. Not too sweet and perfectly creamy yet like a pudding with textures from pistachios and crispy rice balls. Service was on-point and timely. The lady coming around with ginger refills really made my colleague happy! Overall solid and not overly seasoned. Would love to return and try the supplements and sit at the bar next time :)

I think the best omakase I’ve ever had.
The dishes were all extremely flavorful and well tuned and balanced. Every bite did a service to the fish.
I really enjoyed the pacing and breaking up the sushi with the second round of small bites.
The service was honestly impeccable, so attentive, on top of it and kind. I feel really welcome and at peace here. One very small note, at one point someone from the staff asked us a question mid sushi bite and it distracted from savoring the tuna.
On the other hand, the staff noticed I was left handed and flipped the dish order for me. This made it a lot easier to things in order, I actually really appreciated that gesture.
To be brief, Sushi Hon is an impeccable dining experience, and I think the base omakase at 115 is actually a very good value. Dinner for 2 was around 350 all in.
I don’t think you can find a better experience at this price.
Sushi Hon sets the bar so high I don’t think another Omakase can beat it..
We’ll be back many times 🙇♂️

Service was 4 stars where staff was very attentive and prompt with service. However, they tried to oversell you by saying 'this salmon is Alaska which is the best in the world, this tuna is from Spain which is one of the best in the world' and on and on. The quality of the fish was B where some were great and a few tasted fishy. The worst dish was this chawanmushi which had uni on top and it was cooked which tasted bad. What a waste of uni. I don't think I will be going back.

Truly a spectacular experience.
I came here on the recommendation of my friend who’s a SF local and this place did not disappoint.
Every part of the evening was like an artistic performance. Every little detail- in how the food was made, plated, served- how each cup and glass was placed- how each server was so attentive and graceful.
Each course was so well executed and the details and story behind each piece was concisely narrated.
I cannot even begin to recount what each piece of nigiri was- but it was a wide range of different fishes from all over- each piece was fresh and flavorful and well thought out.
I highly recommend getting the supplement- those were my favorite nigiri of the evening.
Price wise, I can’t speak for the Bay Area, but generally, omakase where I’m from (east coast) will run you about the same, or even a little more. Do know that they include a (very WELL deserved) 20% service charge.
I will recommend sushi hon to all my friends and family!

Food: 11/10
Service: 11/10
My. Jaw. Dropped!
This is now my favorite sushi spot in the bay. Let's talk fish--tender, flavorful, absolute YUM! I was speechless. And the uni is a m u s t try!
Now the service--unbelievable! 1) They noticed my long coat and quickly offered to hang it for me so it doesn't touch the ground. 2) They were so kind as to describe multiple sake options for us given our taste preferences. 3) They took notice of everyone's dominant hand and rearranged the plating for my lefty friends. How courteous! 4) They strive for synchronous service where each plate is set on the table at the same time. This only worked for the first course since it was a busy night, but love the effort. 5) They beautifully explained every piece in the omakase in great detail.
Some side details: Their music selection is very vibey. We loved it so much, we asked the manager for the playlist. Street parking only, so good luck!
100% recommend to all sushi lovers. Can't wait to come back here again!

Food and service were beyond words, just impeccable! We booked a table on OpenTable for 5 pm on Saturday. We were seated at the counter with a great view of the chefs doing their thing. The wait staff is very courteous and attentive. Water filled all the time. Spot wiping in between courses. Simultaneously placing dishes for both of us and explaining the pieces. Check-ins on quality of food and whether rice or wasabi portions need to be adjusted. I recommend keeping it the way it is. Chef knows best!
All the cuts are delicious and high quality. The rice to fish ratio is the best I've had so far. The presentation of each element, not just the dish, is so intentional and executed well. The caviar supplement comes on top of two dishes already on the omakase list. The course supplement comes with three extra pieces at the end before dessert.
Highly recommend!!

I used to love this place but the quality has declined so much after Covid. They were overbooked and it got really crowded inside. Nigiri were made in a rush and qualities were variant, service was super slow and we waited a very long time between dishes. Some nigiris had too much sauce or too much wasabi. I don’t think the omakase meets expectations given the price. The highlight of the night was wine pairings.

Amazing omakase experience that does not require dressing up or planning. Excellent wine and sake pairing that rivals the Shota, Omakase, or Kusakabe. Definitely top choice to enjoy an amazing meal with consistent offering and at a relatively reasonable priced omakase.

You cannot fault Sushi Han for the quality of their ingredients, or for the skill of their chiefs, or for the attentiveness of their wait staff. However I blame management for the disconnection between the cost and value. Everything was way overpriced for what you get. I can’t in good justification recommend dining here until they find a way to get their prices to align with what you get. Expect 200-400 a plate of you dine here currently.

Really good selection of fishes for omakase and the servers had good knowledge of the tasting and pairing

Most of the food was excellent. Delicate and flavorful and a bit creative.
But I had to subtract a star because the ambiance inside was loud and crowded. Hard to hear anything the servers said - which was mostly just reading the menu and not adding much interesting info. If you want the vibe of a loud bar then you might dig it.
Bathroom was run down looking also.
But the big problem was that the price was not listed anywhere on the menu. Others here had mentioned prices lower than the $120 per person I was charged so that was unexpected. If they raised their prices recently they should simply PRINT THE PRICE ON THE MENU LIKE EVERYONE DOES!

great omakase experience. they use fresh Italian summer truffles not from a jar. three aroma worked so well with the torched wagyu it's perfection and it remains light like a piece of sushi should be

I came here with my friend and I am impressed with the food and service. We both got the exclusive omakase and premium selection supplement.
The cold appetizer was very nice and refreshing. The octopus was really tender and had very nice flavor. The nigiri sushi were just out of this world. Each sushi was expertly crafted and seasoned by the chef. The flavor / texture profile is just so complex and unique to each piece. I had to take my time to savor each piece. I took a sip of water between each piece to cleanse my palate so I could fully enjoy the next piece. I believe if the chef added just a bit less glaze on each sushi, the natural favor of the fish would come through even more. At the end, the soy bean panna cotta was excellent as well. The sea salt, crunchy topping really helps contrast with the silky and sweet panna cotta.
Service was excellent and friendly. We never even had to pour our sparkling water ourselves. The waitresses were very through in explaining the dishes to us. The meal was very well coursed out and paced.
If I had to nit pick, I would say that the restaurant charged too much for the sparkling water ($8.00 per person).
Overall, I really enjoyed the experience. I love eating sushi and I think any sushi lover should come here at least once to experience the cuisine here.

TLDR: come for the company you bring and for the entertainment, not the sushi.
Good, but now worth the price.
I did the pairing (not sure if they have non pairing, but tonight they only had that).
The service and fish quality are good. The “treatment” on the fish just adds too many overpowering flavors. You practically don’t taste the sushi.
I did a sake pairing. Sake was good… but also overpowered the sushi. It was like eng slapped across the face with each flavor profile. It’s not what I’m looking for in sushi.
I can see why this works. You’re a techie and Vic talking about industry. You’re distracted proving to each other how smart you are. Talking about people in industry. You’re distracted. Not in the moment of the delicate meal in front of you.
You need boldness to accompany your ambition.
(Three stars because it’s good, just not great)

Wonderful service and pleasant ambience. However, I expected superior quality (and quantity) for the price.

The omakase was different and had some definite high points throughout the meal. The king salmon was fantastic and the wide variety of fish was enjoyable! Unfortunately the Santa Barbara uni was lackluster, missing at least for me some of the nutty notes and replacing it with a little bitterness. Otherwise everything was a culinary joy.
The service was helpful, attentive, and knowledgeable about the food and sake. I would happily go back for another special occasion and would recommend it to anyone looking for the omakase experience for close to $100 per person.

The music is super loud and I can barely hear my friends across the table. We requested the staff to turn it down but she said that was the lowest volume manager allowed. But still, we have to yell at each other to be heard.
The uni was not fresh and so bitter.
The only highlight was the dessert which should be made of soy bean. (Thanks to the music I couldn’t hear the introduction from the staffs).
Overall it’s a 2-3 star experience. I will not come back.

Amazing omakase. Loved the flavors of all the courses. Excellent value, considering the quality of the seafood.

We had an outstanding omakase meal here last night, even though we lost precious minutes since we opted for outdoor seating to reduce the risks of COVID. I'm sure the meal is even better during normal times when you're just seconds away from the chef's counter. We had the best nigiri we have had in the U.S. and the meal compares very well with the outstanding omakase meals we had in Tokyo. The Chef is creative and skilled, deftly highlighting flavor and texture. We went for my eldest daughter's birthday and my younger one marveled at the texture and flavor of the eggplant (not one of her favorite vegetables but incredibly prepared by Chef). The servers were friendly, hyper conscientious, and eager to help. We came prepared for super cold weather (I had a scarf and additional jacket) but the heat lamps and our jackets were more than sufficient for the mid 50s temperatures. We look forward to returning soon!

Nice outdoor seating but not enough heat lamps. Can get quite cold, make sure you bring enough to wear!
They serve sushi omakase here and you can add on other pieces if you wanted to. Overall - very good, good quality fish, nice flavors, and we were full without having to add on any additional pieces. Only downside is the food comes out cold and the nigiris don't feel as "good" as if you got them soon after they were made. But it's covid times, so it's really great to be able to do this already.
The chef was a bit heavy handed with the wasabi but the servers were really considerate to ask if we needed any adjustments to the wasabi. :)

Disliked the service extremely.
Felt rushed to eat and compared to others that were sitting with us...my table was getting our food fast and being asked if “ thats all? “ to have our table given next people.
Omakase is suppose to be a fun welcoming experience.
Food was great.
I personally will never come back after this first time experience.

Great sushi. Their cleanliness was impressive as they took all measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19: checking your temperature before giving you a table, cleaning tables and chairs in front of us and cleaning the bathroom after every single use. Menu is also online through a QR code as other restaurants in the area.

This place was surprisingly good. I was a lil nervous when I heard that it's not owned by Japenese, however it turned out to be really good. We came on a Wednesday night to celebrate my buddy's bday. When we arrived there's already a hand written card with signatures of the staff. We had omakase dinner and everything was so fresh, our Chef was Chef Lee and he was professional yet personable. I enjoyed every piece of nigiri of the night. The service was great as well. I am a lefty and the lady who replaces plates /arranges utensils always remember to leave my utensils on my left side. It was a slow day and at some point we were the only patron at the restaurant so I guess that made a difference too. Nevertheless we thoroughly enjoyed everything there. For the price you pay in SF I feel it was worth it. Highly recommended

Great omakase! It was busy but not slammed so it had a great vibe inside. The drink pairing was also generous pours. They staff was super friendly and explained everything they brought to the table. It's omakase so it's not cheap, but it was more affordable than others in the city.
I will come back here for sure.

Sushi Hon provides a meal that transports you to the streets of Japan. Everything from the decor to the 15 course Omakase will leave you in awe. I enjoyed the Omakase at the bar (which is Omakase only) and the experience was unlike anything I've ever seen. The fish all tasted fresh caught (unlike most other popular sushi joints where the fish taste "fishy" and previously frozen). Each cut was described in detail from where it was caught to how they treated and manipulated it as the finished product. Each bite had a unique flavor and texture, some buttery and light, others were tender and salty. If I could afford to eat here every week I would.

Great sushi off the beaten path. Had a great date night with the wife there. Host and sushi chef were really awesome to us. Had all kinds of new sushi I hadn't tried before. Well worth the visit if you're in the neighborhood and want an upscale sushi dinner.

Short summary and warning: DO NOT GO HERE!!!!!!!!!
If I can request refund I would, I am not that picky but I really felt it was rip off for the money. I had pre-packaged sushi at the SF airport that tasted better than this pretentious place that's how bad it was. You know airport food never taste good and a rip off but this place was like 3 times worse.
Long Summary:
I found about this restaurant by reading on some San Francisco food critic website and had a great expectation. I had to take Uber to get here from Union Square and wasted $30 on top of their over priced omakase that cost me $120 for just me and my daughter.
Such a rip off for the money. I had Nobu omakase in Dallas to compare it to and at Nobu, it was pricey but it was special. I still remember the experience. Nobu had this creative sushi that looked and tasted like art. I was delighted at every presentation.
Here at Sushi Hon, every piece was just marinated in soy sauce for all of their sushi and I was like what the heck I am paying $100 for this? Such a pretentious place and they had like 2-3 sushi chef just standing around doing nothing because there wasn't enough customers to service. I bet it cost $100 per customer to pay for the 5-7(?) sushi chef that was standing there. I think 3 sushi chef would have been enough to service all the customers. So it was over staffed and so they need to jack up the price to cover the expenses basically. It looked more crowded in the kitchen and staff compared to actual customers.
It was half empty on a Saturday evening, that should tell you enough about this place.
Seriously felt like a rip off and I will never trust these stupid food critic again, I bet they got paid to write fantastic review on their website.
Just stay away and find another sushi place I heard there is supposed to be lot of great choices around the city.
It was my first visit to San Francisco and I really wanted to experience culinary art and great sushi and willing to spend $100+ for that special experience but all I had was soy sauce marinated sushi and one of them tasted so fishy that I had to swallow a huge chunk of wasabi to get rid of that after taste.
If you had to go here because of no other choice, don't get their special dinner option. The only sushi that was good was the fatty Toro for like $11 for one piece of stupid sushi.. Most rip off I ever experienced in my life.

The food was fantastic. The chef was quiet, but the for spoke well for him. The omakase had items like yellowtail belly which I had never had before and it was incredible, not like other cuts at all. The monkfish liver was served without rice, not unlike a foie gras terrine and was one of the best that night.
