Fantastic assortment of handrolls on the menu, but be sure to check out the specials -- always delicious. The decor is nothing to write home about (needs some personality infusion), but the food definitely is.

The first time I went to Handroll Project, I was a little underwhelmed—I ordered the set menu, and while it was good, I didn’t love everything. But on my latest visit, I went à la carte, and wow—completely different experience. Every single handroll I ordered was fantastic.

Their dine-in-only special handrolls are the real stars. The Unagi with Salsa Fresca is perfection—the torched eel with shiso, pickled red onion, and a little heat from serrano? So good. The Ikura & Ankimo (salmon roe and monkfish liver pâté) is insanely flavorful, and the Smoked Uni with Ikura is smoky, buttery, and just melts in your mouth.

The vibe here is energetic and fun, with counter seating that puts you right in front of the chefs as they prep each roll fresh to order—it makes the whole experience feel interactive and special. The bar also has a surprisingly good sake list that pairs beautifully with the food, so take advantage of that.

If your first visit didn’t wow you (like me with the set menu), go back and do à la carte. Do your research, pick the specials, and this place will totally win you over. Handroll Project delivers big time when you order smart!

Hand rolls were good but pricy. We ordered the foods around 7pm, but they pushed us to return the table at 8:00pm. What!!! We spent over USD350 for dinner but only got one hour. Well, we might not come back again.

Nothing horrible but nothing good - especially for the price. The quality of the fish was mid and I felt like the rolls were overloaded with toppings that were also poorly balanced. In and out in 30 minutes, I didn't feel like there was much of an experience, but the staff were excellent, so they get a star.

I don’t understand how people are giving this a 4*. This spot is truly fantastic.

Ultra fresh fish, smooth Yuzu beer and milky sake, delicately layered miso soup… and wasabi that made me realize that every other wasabi I’ve had in my life was a big fat horseradish lie.

With veggie options, and a small ~20 person location, this restaurant is a gem.

Thankful for vegan 5-pc menu. The veggie set gets a 4/5 from me, delivers a solid experience, but lacks a wow factor. $6-$9 for a single roll is also a bit expensive considering how small the portions are.

We first dined in here when it opened back in May 2022. We don't often find ourselves in this part of the city so it took us a bit to return., this time for takeout. We remember what we missed - it was the quality of the handrolls. Fresh fish and excellent combinations. Even take out was good. Nothing lost on the experience!

I had been there before and really wanted to take my friend there. We say down 10 minutes after our reservation because it’s impossible to get parking in that neighborhood (not the restaurant’s fault). I ordered a bottle of sake while we looked over the menu. We were never told that we had a time limit. By the time we had our 3rd of our 7 rolls, we asked to order another bottle of sake. We were denied because they had another reservation coming in for our seat in 15 minutes. We pointed out that we were not even halfway through our meal and when we sat down we were asked if we wanted to add starters and specials to our meal. Thank goodness we didn’t opt for that. It probably would have been put in a takeaway box and kicked us to the curb. The couple next to us asked to order another course and they were told that the manager said they could order only one more if they really wanted it because they needed to vacate their seat as well. It was really unpleasant and stressful. I understand that they are trying to squeeze in as many seatings as they can but it’s ridiculous when you aren’t even halfway through your prefix and made to feel that you need to leave. Our next couple of courses didn’t even come out until after the time they wanted us to be out. It’s really unfortunate. I enjoyed my first visit very much and wanted to bring my friends back. It’s a good thing there are other places in town to enjoy.

The food is good. Nothing innovative. The price is right. The service is there. The location is prime and with how little the seating capacity is, I think they have more potential: more wine selections (they only have a few option in cans), draft beers and some small dishes other than hand rolls would be nice.

I didn’t have a bad roll. However, for the value, there are better places in SF for tasty sushi. I also found the service a bit lacking. Unlike at most sushi bars, when you sit at the bar, you chat with the chef and can vary your order to your taste. There are no substituting or altering the rolls.
Make sure to scan the QR code on the menu to check out the specials.

Trying to get an affordable omakase in this city is next to impossible, but I think Handroll Project got it right. Not necessarily named an omakase, but you can opt for a prefixed 5 handroll $36 or 7 handroll $55.

We went rogue from the prefix and tried all the specials. Don’t sleep on the smoked uni. It was packed full of flavor with the soft buttery texture you expect from quality urchin. The monkfish liver handroll was the unexpected star of the show. They freeze the fatty liver and shave on top a bed of sushi rice and roe. It’s delightfully delicate and must be eaten quickly before it melts like a savory shaved ice. My hands smelt like monkfish all night, and I’d do it again in a heartbeat. I mean, we did- we ordered a second round of it.

The hand rolls were enjoyable, but for having to make a reservation early at the time (this was nearer to when they first opened, not sure if that’s changed now), I’m not sure anything stood out much. I think the service paid good attention and we were able to get the next rolls fairly quick after we finished. Wasn’t a fan of the shiso personally as I felt they overpowered the flavor, and it was used in many rolls, but that’s just personal preference. More of a place I could enjoy again but probably would go out of my way for, would rather enjoy something more simple like Kazu Nori, unfortunately there isn’t one nearby.

We did not want to send the CC number via email as requested for obvious security reasons. A few hours later we arrived but our spot was giving away. Bummer. Beware.

Overall it was decent. I ordered 7 rolls preset and the price is okay for sf restaurant but not for what you get. The hand rolls have good amount of fish and the fish is really fresh. I would say it needs more texture tho. They all have the same chopped up fish on top. I was expecting more. The vibe is very casual and they kick you out after 1 hr. Like their brought our coats to hint to us to leave. Maybe it says it on the reservation but it was kind of abrupt.

Had a 7:45 reservation. Handrolls did not do a good job of showing the fish or fish quality. The chef preparing the handrolls did not make any effort in understanding or even once asked if we wanted more wasabi or soy sauce in the rolls based on preference. For the price, I expected a lot more. The seven standard rolls on the menu were all mediocre at best, the chopped up nature of the fish left texture as something to be desired; in the matter of 2-3 minutes of being served to eating, the nori was already unmanageable in terms of being able to bite through without making a mess of the roll. The smoked uni w/ ikura was the best thing, but $22 for a single handroll; you can do a lot better elsewhere. Dinner for 2 w/ drinks for $180… look elsewhere as I left here desiring for much more

We went here for a an anniversary and oh boy did they hook us up. We sat in front of the chef extraordinaire Darel (spelling?). Darel is only 4 months in to his chef job but made the experience really fun for us. He even brought out a sushi roll. What a guy!

Now the food, was pretty fantastic! I’m particular I loved the pickled but real wasabi they served. I find it exceedingly hard to find this and it really brought the meal together. That being said I would recommend you use it sparingly as the rolls really can stand alone. I did a thing where 50% of the roll I had no wasabi and the other 50% I put it on for fun. I ordered the 7 roll tasting and my favorite was the Kari roll with the miso aoli. I also liked the special A5 wagyu roll. I didn’t take any photos because I was so immersed in the food but would recommend you do.

Hope you enjoy as much as I did and don’t forget to ask for Darel!

Cool concept, great for a date night or solo dining.

Because it's all counter seating, it's not ideal for big groups. It hits the mark in describing itself as a more casual joint.

Food tasted good. Flavor could be more elevated, so i wouldn't say it's special, and not the kind of spot you'd go to taste the quality for fish, for instance.

The food, in my opinion, was over-hyped. Everything was under seasoned which made every handroll kinda taste the same. At this price point I expect significantly tastier food.

The service was great, though. And the music was fun.

I think it is too expensive for the food and service you are getting. I tried KazuNori in Manhattan recently and I thought I should try this place when I return back to SF. I am already kind of against the price of a handroll as it is almost a glorified sea weed burrito (there are places doing it in the Bay Area) with $12.

- food: Not impressive. Fish is not as high quality as a nigiri or a sashimi would be. Cutting the non good parts and serving the best is much important for nigiri and sashimi, but for this most stuff is very small pieces or almost grinded. Also, the required skill for a chef is much lower than the sushi chef.

- atmosphere: the décoré is not super nice as you are looking towards a wall when you sit. I can understand that it is a bar, but other places and sushi places are much more transparent as you can see the chef working. They created a fancy vibe, but there are issues in the wall and waiter station doesn't look good. I can see labels of the seats etc.

I think the handroll should be much cheaper than this. As I said, it is a glorified burrito. The same price, you can easily eat nigiri. I think KazuNori and many others like here try to convince us that this is fancy and we should pay a lot for this. I don't think it deserves the price, I can go and get some poke bowl with a lot of

Stopped by for dinner and ordered the seven hand roll set. The server recommended the pickled wasabi too!

I thought everything was very tasty. My favs were the scallops and the toro! I like that they offer a slight twist to the standards.

It's weird but they ran out of the Aji special and they ran out of hot tea. We must have come on an off night.

About the service and atmosphere 😟. The workers were very polite. Just didn't feel very welcome. It's hard to describe. Our sushi chef was also not engaging... By comparison, on the other side of the room, the chef seemed more friendly.

This was an entertaining experience. I had to book a couple weeks ahead, on account of it seems to be very popular, and ended up with an early meal slot even so.

I ordered one of the set menus of hand rolls, plus a couple of in-house specials.

These are open, almost taco-style rolls, not the ice cream cone shape I associate with the term hand roll.

I appreciated the cadence: wait a while, receive a roll, eat it quickly as per instructions (it spoils if you don't, for reasons I missed), cleanse palate with ginger, then go back to waiting. It made me pay more attention to the roll when I had it in hand.

There was a strong smell of fish that was off putting in the restaurant. I did have the first seating on a Wednesday after being closed for 2 days. I was seated by the door and people were waiting for their seat with the door open in a small space. Great casual experience, value for the cost is pretty good especially if you like handrolls. The only filler pieces were the crab and spicy tuna, they could really stand to spruce those up. Everything else was pretty good. Stand outs included the three ikura rolls (especially the smoked uni one), hotate, otoro, hamachi. The pickled wasabi is also delicious and a really nice touch.

You have the option of 5, 8, or 10 pieces, but the best pieces are for the most part in the 8 and 10 options. So if you come here and just get the 5 piece, I can see how you might not think too much about this menu.

Handrolls are satisfying and filling in a way nigiri sometimes arent. Glad we have an upscale counter only option now where you can get them fresh one piece at a time. Would definitely come back.

The bar is set high and they fail to meet it. Overhyped, overpriced, underdelivered. The rolls are stuffed with rice and extras instead of the fish, which should be the star of the show. It feels rushed, like they just want you in and out so they can churn more customers. It felt like I didn’t get to enjoy the rolls.

Only getting a three star because the scallop rolls was ok, the rest I would never eat again.

Very tasty but some rolls weren’t as amazing as I’d hoped. The Wagyu was incredible but the uni and monkfish liver weren’t my favorite. The wasabi was so good tho! Ordered extra.

Excited about a Ju Ni extension in my own neighborhood. Friendly staff. Liked that we were able to make a reservation. 10 pieces was way too much for me. 7 pieces with maybe the wagyu roll added would have been the best route. Nice short sake selection with good options.

Had 6 course rolls which seems enough and filling for one. Extra wasabi pickles is not necessary since the rolls are much marinated.
My fav was scallop roll!
We added wagu roll and uni roll but it was not that worth the price and quality.

Kazu nori is better and cheaper.

The best thing about these handrolls is the seaweed and how perfectly crunchy they are.

There was shiso in 3/7 handrolls we had. I personally think shiso has a very distinct and strong flavor that can overpower a lot of other foods especially the delicate flavors of raw fish. The courses definitely felt repetitive because the shiso was used in so many of the rolls without enhancing the unique flavors of different types of fish. Not that I am looking for sushi here, but was expecting the combination of various ingredients to enhance the taste.

Worth going if you can get a rez, otherwise, don’t wait.

Over-hyped and not worth the cost!! If I’m being honest, my favorite part was just the pickled wasabi.

We had to wait about an hour total to be seated after arriving about 20min before opening on a weekday (which isn’t bad compared to what some other people described the wait to be) However the entire experience felt extremely rushed so they could cram in as many people as possible. In terms of the atmosphere, I found it a little weird to have counter seating where the counter is so high such that you can’t see over to the other side. I would’ve loved to be able to watch the chefs do more of the preparation.

While I did feel there were many creative dishes like the “dip n dots” style roll, overall the fish itself did not stand out and didn’t taste the freshest (maybe some is batch prepared?) - would encourage you to take a bite of the fillings plain to see what you think.

If you were planning to get the 10 piece hand roll set I would recommend going to Wako instead which was much better for the same price point. If you insist on still trying this place, I would get at MOST the 7 piece set but personally I do not think it is worth coming here.

Having tried Ju-Ni we were super excited for the opening of this restaurant. My wallet definitely suffered but our stomachs enjoyed the experience. I recommend coming here at least an hour before opening if it hasn't changed since July. We showed up maybe 40 minutes before opening and the line was already well around the corner. Unfortunately, we didn't make the first wave of seating. Anyway, I highly recommend their 10 pc hand roll option. My favorite one is their ikura & ankimo hand roll. Ju-ni/Hand Roll Project is the only restaurant that serves ankimo (monkfish liver) in this fashion. The flavors that come out while it melts in your mouth is impeccable. I ended up getting another roll and I'm sure you'd too!

Side note, the wasabi is made with fresh roots but it’s not really worth the $4.50.

HRP was a really good experience. Well maintained environment, great and attentive staff, service was great, interactions were pretty good too.

After our meal, we went to Bi-rite close by for a quick dessert after a great meal 😁👍

Thank you HRP!

Great vibe and food experience. Yes, there’s all the hype. The 2 hour wait in line “used to be true” but they now offer reservations through Resy, which makes it so much better.

Once seated, you quickly realize why reservations are this hard to come by; the place is tiny! Counter seating only, and 14 people max.

Deciding on whether to order a la carte or the fixed 5, 7 or 10 pieces…the latter seem to be the norm. I ordered the 7 piece, with the wasabi. This was surprisingly filling, I think it’s because there’s a lot of rice in each roll, and it’s spaced out during the entire dining experience.

I’d go again, may do the 10 piece…or just add a Wagyu beef roll (which isn’t in the 7 piece).

Highly recommend, hit Resy for a reservation!

This place nails it!

Seriously one of the best deals for the quality and integrity of the refined ingredients and service.

Everything seriously is wonderful; and I never say that. That said, the outstanding items/not to be missed are:

- Kizami Wasabi (deep, rich wasabi flavor with a truly wonderful burn)

- Spicy Tuna (makes you wonder why you would order Spicy Tuna other places)

- Smoked Hamachi (fragrant, delicate, deep)

- Toro Takuna (fatty and delicious yet elevated)

Had the 10 piece Handroll set. The hamachi and uni was probably my least favorite. The standout for me was the spicy tuna. The seaweed was crunchy which was great but I kind of expect it to be that way if youre not fully wrapping it into a roll. The monk liver one was trying too hard - I think I would’ve preferred it in chunks? Overall probably won’t be coming here again with how expensive it was but it was a good one time experience and my server across the table was a delight. 🙂 the waiter was over attentive imo - came over too frequently to check in on water and how the meal was going when the water vase was full the entire time. 👀

I recommend getting here 30 min before opening to catch the first wave. The waitlist closes out fast for each day.

The simplicity of HRP is striking: it is about good food. It lands in front of your eyes in style and good pacing. You can share the rolls. They make for two big bites. Loved it... Great addition to the hood.

Giving this a four star because of the creamy scallop hand roll.

Went on a wednesday. Arrived 45 min prior to opening and was fourth in line when they opened.

I had the miso soup (👍🏻👍🏻), and the 10-piece (with an 11th scallop). Most of the handrolls were a bit underwhelming. I will say the wayu, uni, and scallop are the best three in my humble opinion.

Overall, not as great as NYC’s Nami Nori or even Kazunori. But would visit again because of that scallop one. I hope that, once they look to refresh their menu, they will look for handrolls that are a bit farther apart in taste, have stronger, more flavorful ingredients, and where other elements of it don’t overpower the meat.

We arrived Friday at 8:15 and we’re able to be squeezed into the last seating, usually around 8:45/9pm.

Service was incredible- staff was super friendly, attentive, and really fun to talk to.

Handrolls were divine, I would say definitely worth it for a great price point. Some of the rolls like the spicy tuna and chefs poke could have used better presentation (they were mixed into a paste for better consistency in flavor) but overall the taste was delicious, and my favorite aspect was actually the nori - it’s rich, crisp, and fragrant.

I was very excited to try this place because of the hype and it's by the Ju-Ni team.

We arrived 30 minutes before opening time on a Friday evening and got the first seating.

I got the 7 pieces and felt that they were redundant. For instance, Spicy Tuna and Spicy Kani tasted identical. I couldn't really taste the freshness of the fish as it was overpowered by other sauces. I also got the Ikura & Ankimo which we were told is the head chef's signature at Ju-Ni. It was good but not memorable. I would say my favorite was the Chef's Poke Handroll.

Service felt very rushed. I feel like the hand rolls could be spaced out a bit more. I understand that the place is busy, but for this amount of money spent, we should be able to enjoy the experience and not rushed out immediately after we finished our last bite.

Compared to Nami Nori in NYC, which has similar taco-style hand rolls and similar vibes/decor, Handroll Project did not meet my expectations.

Sister restaurant of the Michelin starred Ju-Ni, Handroll Project has a simple menu of 10 hand rolls and a few appetizers and drinks. Got the 10 piece hand roll set which covered all the rolls on the menu - all of them were great, my favorite was the smoked uni and ikura. The pickled wasabi was also a very good addition to put on the handrolls.

Would come here with a group of at most 3 people. Is a very good spot for solo dining since everyone faces the hand roll chef. Wait time is very low - showed up at 4:50pm to join the Yelp waitlist and was seated at 7:30. Service was quick, meal took 1 hour.

Came here on a Friday night. Arrived first in line around 4pm for the 5pm opening. The wife and I both ordered the 10 piece set (basically every handroll on the menu) for $95 per set and the pickled wasabi add-on. Standout handrolls included the soft scallop, toro, a5 wagyu and the ikura with monkfish liver pate shavings. Every handroll was delicious though. And the pickled wasabi was a must get. The pickling subdued the wasabi kick just enough and added a nice balance to the richness of the fish.

5 ⭐️! Worth the wait and hype! I am a big fan of handrolls and this place definitely hit the spot. Amazing food, great service, and good price point.

The fish were well fresh and paired with aged soy sauce and the in house wasabi. Staffs were attentive and service was fast. The itamae serves each roll to you so you are getting each roll as fresh as it gets; no soggy, condiment soaked sushi here! Another must have here is the miso soup; it has a hint of sweetness to it that was quite unique.

I loved the experience at the HRP. Getting a spot is quite challenging so be prepared. We showed up at 4:30PM and the line was already long. Note that they don’t open the waitlist on Yelp until 5:30PM and, by that time, the waitlist is already full.

We sat down at 8PM. The staff was nice anf attentive and our chef was awesome. He made us delightful rolls, my personal favorites were the ankimo, toro and uni ones. Honorary mention to the poke and scallop rolls. The chef recommended the spicy tuna roll but I didn’t get around to try it. The miso soup is very tasty and it’s the same they serve at ju-ni. I had 7 rolls and could have gotten to 10, but I love food so don’t take me as your reference 🤣

Random facts: they will soon start offering hot green tea and they serve upon request pickled wasabi which is delish.

Fantastic “elevated” hand roll spot. Difficult to get in as of summer 2022, but they have plans to expand their hours of operation. You’d be doing yourself a disservice if you didn’t try at least one of their “specialty” rolls - my favorite was the Ikura Ankimo. The pickled wasabi is unique and worth the $4 add-on to add a new flavor to each of the rolls.
