This place is a total hidden Gem. I went for the first time last night and it was a total experience. Sushi is amazing and Rodger the Sushi Chef was entertaining, knowledgeable and hilarious. This is a must do if you like Sushi.

Sat at the bar for my wife's bday omakase dinner and Roger, the sushi chef/owner, did not disappoint! Some of the best fish I've ever had, great conversation as well, Roger is very knowledgeable! Some of the major highlights. 2 kinds of uni on soft tofu (Roger prefers it this way and wow it's good), yellowtail nigiri, blue fin tuna a few ways , soft shell crab hand roll and last but not least a5 Japanese wagyu nigiri with shaved foie gras! Had about 15 courses each, came out to about $200 each and that's with a big bottle of sake, tax and tip. Worth every penny!

ABSOLUTE MUST 🍣 Hands down the best sushi I have ever had in my entire life. Food, service and atmosphere 11/10. I’m truly not exaggerating one bit. Doesn’t look like much on the outside, but make sure you get a spot AT the bar with Chef Roger (sits about 6 people). The fish is so fresh, he will provide three different variations to a fish, coaching you on how to properly eat each dish, with a lesson on what makes it special. Each fish comes from a different part of the world, Scotland, Japan, Korea etc. He puts so much love and care into each dish, he explains that good food comes from the heart, not the mind. He has different sauces and garnishes, and it really changed my perspective on how I have been eating sushi. He has an amazing personality, very funny, you really connect with him, and it feels like a vip experience. We got lucky and got same day reservation but they told me, as well as reviews I saw, you need to call ahead. Wasn’t a cheap meal, but we did not care one bit. For this experience, it was worth every penny. He ended it with a wagyu sashimi with foie gras garnish, and we don’t eat dairy and he gave us sorbet for dessert as alternative. He also starts off asking for allergies and is very accommodating.

You go here for Roger. You say "omekase", tell him what you want to spend and anything you're allergic to or don't like, and then you eat what they give you. This is the Way. If he tells you what sakes to drink, you do that too.

Probably the most amazing sushi experience I’ve ever had.
I’m definitely not a sushi aficionado or expert…but this was an incredible meal and experience.
The omakase with Chef Roger was all so delicious - but my highlights were the aged toro sashimi and the wagyu sashimi with foie gras shavings to finish the meal.
The salmon roe and soft shell crab handroll to start the meal are also notable mentions, as was the wasabi ice cream for desert.
(And I’m not longer an “uni virgin”, according to Chef Roger.)
The most expensive meal I’ve had in San Francisco this trip, but I can’t recommend this place enough!

This was by far the best Sushi experience I've ever had. We sat at the sushi bar and Chef Roger gave us a totally unique and well-curated Omakase tasting full of the best fish I have ever tasted. He sources his fish from all over the world, and is more than happy to tell you about where it came from. My advice to anyone who goes here - do NOT ask for a reservation at the sushi bar if you just want to order specific items off the menu. There is a whole seated section for ordering off the menu, but the sushi bar is meant to be for customers who want the curated Omakase tasting. If you do sit at the sushi bar and let the Chef curate your meal, you will not regret it! It was the culinary experience of a lifetime. I went to 2 michelin star restaurants during my stay in SF, and this place blew them both away.

I’ve been to a fair share of Omakase experiences in SF and Omakase with Chef Roger at Zushi Puzzle blew my mind! The fish was impeccably high quality, mouth-watering, and experience was very personable and educational.

I enjoyed fish I had never even heard of - monkfish liver, Korean halibut, aged toro and more. The lampchop lollipops, spider crab handroll and home made wasabi ice-cream were dishes to remember as well!

He is so thorough with each guest and I promise you, you will NOT leave hungry! Omakase with Roger will change your mind and shift the baseline of an Omakase experience for you - I promise 😋

We had an amazing omakase experience at the bar with Roger. The service was excellent, Roger is fantastic both to watch and to engage with, and the food was unbelievable. The best sushi I've ever had and maybe ever will have. Imaginative preparations, exciting fish that we'd never tried before, incredibly cool side-by-side comparisons and spectacular flavour combinations.

It's not cheap, but this kind of great experience isn't, and it's worth it. Roger's passion really shines through, and he's truly a one-man show behind the counter.

Wholeheartedly recommended.

It's been a long time Roger, maybe 15 years. But my days at your Sushi bar are still some of the best Sashimi experiences of my life. You may not remember the random Australian that lived around the corner, but I will always remember your hospitality, the quality of your food and the excellent service. One of the best experiences in the world, just let Roger make you a Wasabi Bomb at the counter, and pour you an incredible Sake. Still one of my best memories of SF.

We picked Zushi Puzzle due to the great reviews particularly about the experience with Roger, the sushi chef. We were not disappointed. We did the sushi bar omakaze experience. Not an inexpensive but a truly unique experience. Roger led us through a culinary adventure of creative, fresh, high quality fish from all over the world! We had a range of Korean halibut, Hokkaido uni, Norway mackerel, New Zealand snapper and so much more! Even dessert was inspired! We had matcha wasabi ice cream, POPCORN ice cream, and lychee pineapple sorbet!

Roger introduced us to things we would never think to try (such as delicious monk fish liver, “ocean foie gras”) and taught us how to eat the sushi. It was educational and fun. John was our server and he was kind and gracious.
We will definitely return!

Ask for the sushi bar seats - you will not regret it! It is your very own omasake experience, but better because in addition to really good sushi, you get to enjoy Roger's company. Highly recommend the aged tuna, Norwegian mackerel, and Wagyu nigiri! Also, make sure to leave some room for their in-house ice cream and desserts!

This is one of those places I would rather keep to myself — I honestly don’t want to write a review and lead people to this hole-in-the-wall slice of perfection. However, after an amazing omakase over 3+ hours Rodger mentioned that post Covid business has been slow to recover so here I am.

This unassuming restaurant is build around Rodger, sitting at the back counter. His technique, knowledge and talent are absolutely unmatched and result in the single best dining experience of my life.

What a fantastic experience!!!

We had been to Zushi Puzzle probably half a dozen times over the past few months, but decided to sit at the bar since there was no one there. Best move ever! It was just the two of us and the Chef, Roger. He asked what we do and don't like then walked us through each dish for probably 14+ courses over two hours.

Absolutely blew my mind!

This was the best omakase and overall sushi experience I've ever had.

This seemingly innocuous hole-in-the-wall was hands down the best sushi experience I’ve ever had, even relative to places that are 5x the price. I would highly recommend sitting in back with Roger and letting him guide you through different items. It’s not a formal omakase, you are free to order off the menu, take his recommendations, or let him choose everything. It’s a very light hearted and fun environment.

Food: the fish quality is exceptional and Roger is not afraid to serve simple preparations that highlight his excellent product. He also serves a wide range of rare cuts including Kama toro, white salmon, and aged toro. With that being said, every dish had tremendous layers of depth that were carefully thought out. Roger’s decades of experience come through in his ability to expertly layer flavors without using gimmicks.

Beyond the food, the service quality and ambience is what sets Zushi Puzzle apart. Despite the casual feel to the restaurant, service was on point. Roger puts on a show and his passion shines through. He’s funny, easy going, and charismatic. He memorized everyone’s name and was telling us stories about his favorite customers from years before. Everyone at the table was there for their first time and were strangers to each other, yet we spent hours laughing together and sharing stories.

Zushi Puzzle completely exceeded our already high expectations. They accommodated our special request upon making reservations. Our table was ready right away and our server was very attentive. We ordered the Omakase and Rodger slayed course after course. We asked him to recommend a bottle of Sake to pair with his offerings and it definitely elevated the experience. I'm sure there are other sushi restaurants in San Fransisco that are amazing but the value Zushi Puzzle offers would be hard to compete with. I only gave Atmosphere 4 stars because that is clearly not the focus here. You will get fresh creative sushi served by great people who care.

This place Sushi restaurant, I read reviews and thought its good, but I'm wrong, I orders Sashimi, most place I went, the Chef cut sushi very nice pieces, this place, chef cut sashimi in angle and small pieces. And time waiting was so long, I stay there more than 2 hours, I have to cancel the last order, I was keep asks, but waiter says not done, but restaurant look empty few people there.
Time bill come cost me $170, I'm very surprise, Because I'm in hurry, so I let it go. But will not come back here again for sure.

Unassuming place, stellar sushi and service. The decor looks like it’s stuck in the 80’s but don’t let that fool you. The place has been running smoothly for decades. Highly recommend the omakase and letting Roger take care of you at the bar (you’ll need to reserve). He gave good guidance on how to eat what he served or in which order to gain maximum impact on your palate.Fairly priced and frankly, the freshest tastiest fish I’ve had so far in the Bay area (believe me when i say I’m a sushi fanatic). Dessert was also excellent, who would have thought matcha ice cream made a good pairing with wasabi? Also, the wasabi here is the REAL THING shipped from Japan. I’ve traveled across the country for certain meals by certain chefs, and have had my share of beyond incredible dining experiences. But the omekase by Chef Roger at Zushi Puzzle, a neighborhood-y spot just a mile from where I live, is the most memorable of them all. Sitting in the back room in what looked and felt like a sushi master’s workshop, this was omekase at its supreme, unassuming, authentic, original, and delectable best. It felt (and tasted) like an honor to be there, as Chef Roger presented dish after dish to us, introducing fish from around the world, and some I had never seen served before. We were utterly charmed (and obedient) as Chef Roger gave instructions on how each dish needed to be savored, and which bottles of sake we needed to try. It was all perfection. We now know what the “Puzzle” refers to - but you’ll have to sit at Chef Roger’s sushi bar to discover that secret wonder yourself. Do it (now), before you lose your chance. Chef Roger seems to be thinking about retirement…...let’s not let that happen.

Get a seat at the sushi bar with Chef Roger and let him work his magic. Roger is a character and a half and it’s part of the experience. If you’re a sushi purist and a stickler about what sushi should or shouldn’t be, this may not be the spot for you. But if you’re looking for low-key unpretentious good food and a great time, you can’t go wrong here. Chef Roger isn’t afraid to get a bit quirky with his sushi preparations and it’s part of the fun. Favorite dishes from the 2.5 hour omakase included:
- spider crab hand roll
- uni nigiri
- aged toro nigiri
- New Zealand salmon nigiri

Also, the wasabi here is a star unto itself.

Tab came out to about 170 per person pre-tip, which is not cheap but honestly very reasonable for the amount of food we got and especially compared to many high end omakase places that have popped up in the Bay Area recently.

Outstanding fish quality, freshness, and variety. Chef Rogersan gave us dish after dish that were all superb. Sitting at the small sushi bar is a must if you want the full experience, so call ahead and make a reservation. All of the people in our party have been eating sushi for decades, and we all were blown away. Do the Omakase and you will be glad you did. From the outside, the restaurant doesn't look like much, but don't be fooled. This is without a doubt one of the best sushi restaurants in California. Note it is not for the IG see and be seen crowd, so if that is your jam, there are plenty of other good options in the city. But if you want the freshest fish possible prepared in ways you've never experienced at any other sushi bar, with a chef beyond compare, this is the place for you.

I tasted his wasabi green tea ice cream, popcorn ice cream, wagyu A5 torched beef sushi - so different. I have eaten from a few Michelin restaurants but this was extraordinary. If you come to SF or live here and haven’t tried Zushi Puzzle, you are missing the best sushi/dining meal.

I do not like fish, that being said my wife adores it. I threw myself on Roger’s mercy and he delivered unto us bite after bite of sheer ecstasy which he assured me was actually fish. I believe this man is an actual wizard. If you do not try this you have not lived. -Adharsh McCabe

Are you kidding me! If you like sushi then you MUST go here!!! This is not just a place to go on vacation! In fact, it's a reason to go to SF for anything even if it's just to go here! The fish was unbelievably tasty, fresh and extremely well prepared!! It doesn't matter where you live on this planet, if you like sushi, you MUST go here!! Roger is welcoming, helpful, knowledgeable and extremely kind! One of the best food experiences of my life!

BE AWARE!!! The bills are not matching the prices at this place! I am an experienced traveller and foodie and was completely shocked by the attitude: I was given 155 USD bill instead of 89(!!!) USD... And was not even offered any apologies! Absolutely no go place - they thought we didn't understand anything and we literally just put together the food we ordered... I am so upset with this situation, I was never treated this way before. I would not recommend at no cost. TRAP!!!!

This is more than omakase, it's a conversation. You sit at the very small sushi bar as Chef Roger leads you on an adventure complete with story time. I've had omakase a couple times, but this was the most FUN I've had with omakase and/or sushi. He basically serves you dishes until you tell him to stop, so the bill is variable. If you wanted a monthly omakase type place, this would definitely be my choice. Just so much fun. And tasty!

We had the omakase at the bar with Chef Roger and I believe it might have been the best meal I've ever had! Roger was a joy to listen to as he explained each fish and gave us tips on the best way to enjoy it. Each plate was seemingly more unique than the last - I will definitely be back!

Dined 8/27/22 at the bar. First time back in what feels like forever. Very happy that Chef Roger is still around and survived the down years of the pandemic. His Omakse (quality, taste and uniqueness) has not changed, meaning it's still pretty amazing.

The price is not for the faint of heart and varies based on what he's making that particular day, but if you're looking for an awesome Omakase experience, this is still one of my favorite places to dine and highly recommended. Bar seating is a must here as well. The interaction with Chef Roger as he explains what he's making and the story behind it is not experienced the same way in the main dining room if you're there for the Omakase.

Zushi Puzzle had always been on my radar living in the city for the past several years. I finally made it last week and I'm kicking myself for not having gone sooner! We were greeted by a warm and outgoing staff. My friend and I sat at Roger's (the owner) bar for omakase, which I can't recommend enough. I have been to a lot of omakase experiences in the city, but what Roger delivered was a flavorful and deeply personal experience. He created an entire menu for us tailored to our specific tastes and dietary restrictions from the top of his head. The fish was fresh and delicious. But what left an impression on me was the creativity and unique design of Roger's style and presentation. He is a true showman and culinary craftsman. We will definitely be back.

Simply the finest omakase in San Francisco. I've been coming to Zushi Puzzle for about 14 years and it's the only place I will go for "fancy" sushi in the city. Chef Roger is a master of the omakase, continually surprising me with fish I've never tried before and inventive dishes sauced to perfection. During one course on my most recent visit he treated us to a sashimi platter featuring a beautiful fish (see pic) as the center piece. He seems to have no shortage of varieties of salmon and tuna and toro and mackerel. He also prides himself for having only the best A5 waygu for dessert. Not to mention his five, or six, homemade ice creams!

The longer you remain loyal and keep coming back the more surprises you are sure to get. And, if you're really lucky, you just might graduate to royal status and be let in on his famous fried chicken or his lamb chops!

I always come back to Zushi expecting to be amazed and, so far, I haven't been disappointed.

Prob the best omakase experience I’ve ever had. Incredibly high quality & tender fish, ingenious flavor combinations, all handed to you casually by the chef. The vibe is like a high end dive bar - the bar only seats 8, and Chef Roger stands in front of the guests cutting / torching / seasoning fish. Chef Roger is very friendly and warm.
The high price tag was worth the crazy amount of fish we ate. We were told to wave our napkins in surrender if we couldn’t eat any more, and no one did.

I had never even heard of this place when I made a reservation.I was in from out of town and happened to be almost across the street from my hotel....so I figured, why not?. After I booked it I mentioned it to somebody and they told me to just sit at the sushi bar and let the chef/owner work his magic. Chef Roger clearly has a passion for food! I love the way he took so much of the wonderful tradition of sushi and raw fish preparation and elevated it in such a forward thinking and interesting way. He serve many thing I had never eaten bin 20 years of sushi consumption, and that's before I even mention the five different kinds of ice cream that blew my mind. I won't tell you everything I had because I don't want to spoil the surprise, but I will say if you have a date (or just a night free), a few extra bucks, and a passion for food in this style, you should definitely plan to spend a couple hours here. I let one of the servers pick all of my sake selections as well and I couldn't have been more pleased.

This place is great! I went last week for the first time in ~10 years (was living on the east coast during that time) and it was incredible. My friend was in town from London for one night so I wanted a memorable dining experience and remembered this place. No frills but we sat at the sushi bar 2 feet from chef Roger and it was incredible. He took us on an amazing journey talking to us and the other 4 guests at the sushi bar all along the way. My wife was jealous so we went there two days later and it was just as good. Chef Roger is world class and has been in the same spot at the sushi bar for 19 years. THE GREATEST SUSHI ON THE PLANET!!!!!

Sitting at Roger's table is the single greatest dining experience of my life and I've now been there over a dozen times, not a single let down.

Sitting in the dining area is also phenomenal, the rolls are unique and perfectly designed to bring out all the taste buds. The head waiter who has been there forever is such a nice guy, he always greets me with a huge smile, remembers me and tells me about some of the specials Roger is serving to folks sitting at his table that night, so that maybe I can try those rare items Roger has flown in from all over the world's oceans.

Having eaten sushi for over 30 years all over the USA, Japan, Thailand, Philippines, Korea and in many countries throughout Europe; Zushi Puzzle stands out and will forever be my favorite restaurant, favorite meal and favorite sushi on the planet!!

Thank you for everything you all do to make the food exquisite and the dining experience phenomenal!!

Best,
Matt

Have loved this place for over a decade, and still consider it one of my fave secret spots for impressing die-hard sushi lovers. It might not be the fanciest place, but if you are a true seafoodie, you'll appreciate this place and it's no-frills approach. It's not the same experience at a regular table so to clarify, I can't say that I recommend that or not (I'm sure it's fine, but that's not what I'm here for) - I'm talking about omakase with Chef Rog at the bar. Absolute Legend. I've taken a few folks here who are extremely difficult to please or impress when it comes to a great sushi experience, and you get it all with Roger. He's charismatic and charming, which elevates the meal and the entire night, as we usually end up ordering wayyyyyy too many courses of sushi and sake with zero regrets. I mean maybe a twinge when the bill comes. Lol! I heard he may be retiring soon but I hope that's just a rumor. But it definitely is motivating me to make a another reservation ASAP!

Sat down at the sushi bar and he started feeding everyone. He didn't give us an option on whether we wanted to eat what he was serving, just handed it out. By the end of the night, a tab for 3 people was $550. Not orepared for that. Felt like we were taken advatage of by the chef.

One of the best meals I’ve had. Chef Rodger has a non intimidating sushi bar where he carries the conversation, asks likes and dislikes, and provides some of the best hand crafted sushi you’ll have. So much dedication and thought goes to the ingredients and technique, and it comes thru in everything you eat. Came on a friends recommendation and while there I could see why Rodger has a little cult following. Amazing.

For the best experience sit in the sushi bar and let chef take over. Didn’t take many pics, was busy eating, but here is a trumpet fish head. Also had uni from Japan, monk fish liver, roe, toro, and a bunch of seasonal things that depending on how he prepared changed the entire taste and experience. Mind blow and thankful for the good meal.

I went to Zushi Puzzle based on the great reviews but was very let down after eating there. The restaurant was mostly empty when we arrived but our appetizers (gyoza and tempura) took an extremely long time to come out and we didn’t get them until after our meal had arrived.

The sushi we ordered was terrible. Fish did not taste fresh and was warm. I couldn’t tell if it was because the rice used in the sushi rolls was hot or if the fish was not being stored at the proper temperature, but either way it was not good.

Two people at our table ordered teriyaki instead of sushi (one chicken and one steak). The steak teriyaki was sent back because it did not taste right. When the waitress was informed that we wanted to send back the teriyaki because it tasted bad, the waitress said that it looked like it was cooked perfectly and nothing was wrong with it. About 5 minutes later she came back and offered to swap the steak teriyaki for chicken.

Overall the food was disappointing and it took over two hours for us to eat because the food was so slow to come out. The restaurant was very dirty and dingy. The bathrooms were dirty and the soap looked disgusting (as if it had been sitting there since the restaurant opened). I’m not sure if something was off the night we ate here but I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and will not be returning.
