Welcome to Ozumo, a Japanese restaurant located on the stunning Embarcadero in San Francisco. Step into a world where culinary excellence meets captivating ambiance, where traditional Japanese flavors are elevated to new heights. At Ozumo, we invite you on a journey of tradition and authenticity, offering an unforgettable dining experience like no other. Ozumo offers exquisite robata grilled items and masterfully crafted makimono. Ozumo was one of the pioneering establishments to combine sushi and robata cooking under one roof. It invites you on a culinary adventure that celebrates the rich traditions of Japanese cuisine.
I recently dined at a Ozumo. The sushi was outstanding, with each piece prepared with precision and care. The gyoza were perfectly crisp and flavorful, serving as an excellent appetizer to the meal. I was also impressed with their old-fashioned drink, which was expertly crafted and paired surprisingly well with the sushi.
A special mention goes to George, the sushi chef, who made the experience even more memorable. His skill and attention to detail were evident in every bite, and his friendly demeanor added a personal touch to the evening.
Overall, this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone who appreciates high-quality sushi and a well-made cocktail. I'll definitely be returning soon!

Despite not having a reservation, we were able to walk in and find a table. It was our first visit, and we were warmly greeted and seated in the main dining room. The waitress promptly arrived with menus and offered us drinks.
The food was excellent, with the exception of the tuna tartare, which lacked a strong tuna flavor and was overwhelmed by other ingredients. I particularly enjoyed the Ozumo Unagi and Shrimp Tempura rolls. The atmosphere was pleasant, and everything appeared clean and tidy.
Overall, we had a positive experience. While the nigiri and sashimi offerings seemed a bit overpriced compared to some other restaurants, they were still delicious. I would definitely return for the rolls.

Great experience overall besides the $10 water! Bring your own water or ask specifically for tap water (i thought “still water” was free)
Fish was creamy and fresh, and I especially liked the otoro and gindara (miso black cod). Food was served decently fast and well-timed.

Ozumo in San Francisco has been my favorite sushi spot in the country since my first visit in 2012.
The restaurant has a fantastic atmosphere that instantly makes you feel welcomed and relaxed. The staff is happy and friendly!
The nigiri here is incredibly fresh and of the highest quality—each bite is a reminder of why this spot is my favorite.
The rolls are unique yet maintain a simplicity that highlights the flavors without drowning them in sauce. The focus is definitely on the quality of the ingredients.
If you’re looking for sushi that’s both exquisite and true to its essence, Ozumo is the place to go.

Ozumo is one of San Francisco’s best Japanese restaurant. Located in walking distance from the ferry building, the views from the restaurant are stunning.
I tried the teriyaki tori, the only chicken dish on the menu. The food was good and delicious. Ambiance and service is top notch and they deserve the fame they have in SOMA.

I went to Ozumo on a Monday night for a 7:30 reservation. We were visiting from the east coast and were super excited for some great sushi. We were sat at 7:30, no problem. Once we got to our table it was probably 10 minutes before someone even came over to give us water, let alone take our drink order. It was busy, for a Monday, so we understood that service might be a little slow, but this was unacceptable. Once we ordered drinks they didn’t come for over 15 minutes, with no communication from our server that things might be a little slow.
The drinks were good, nothing special, but they were good. We put in an order for shumai when we ordered our drinks and I had finished my first drink by the time the shumai arrived and I am a very slow drinker. I’m usually nursing a drink for the whole meal. We enjoyed our Shumai and then waited another 10 minutes for our server to come and take our food order. Our server was incredibly disinterested in our presence and barely made any eye contact, didn’t introduce herself, and rushed through every interaction. There were multiple times I tried to get her attention for like a water refill and she just brushed right past us.
Once we finally ordered our food at 8:15!!!!! (We sat at 7:30), we then waited another 30 minutes for 4 nigiri rolls which were just okay. Nothing was wrong with them, but for the price of this place, I expected something delicious. After that, we then waited another 30 minutes for our 2 sushi rolls which came out 10 minutes apart. The presentation was pathetic. My college dining hall had better sushi and I’m not exaggerating. It tasted 4/10, and was quite pricey. As somebody who has worked in the service industry, I understand that things can get busy and the kitchen and bar gets backed up and sometimes there are unexpectedly busy nights, but nobody came over and even acknowledged the fact that we had waited an hour for the most mediocre sushi of my life. That’s where the problem lies. And the spacing of the food was just bizarre. I was already hungry again every time some new food came because I had waited so long between the small portions.
Our server barely spoke to us all night and once she came over with the check she practically threw it on the table and walked away before I could give her my card. She then sharply asked if I wanted a receipt and as I said no she just turned and walked away. Very weird experience with our server and even worse experience paying $200 for 2 people, which I don’t mind paying for food that is worth it. I will never come back here or recommend it to anybody. Find a better restaurant with servers who will actually talk to you and food that will be worth the price.

I sat at Ozumo for a solo lunch date and what an amazing experience. Everyone was super friendly and professional. Luke, my server was the best! He helped me pick out some items off the menu and all of his suggestions were DELICIOUS! The fish is so fresh. The wagyu nigiri is to die for! The Giddy Geisha?… give me 14 more please!! lol The host(unfortunately I can’t remember her name) even stopped by to check in on me and make sure I was doing ok. Just a great experience overall. Would definitely recommend this place and will definitely be stopping by whenever I’m in town.

The food was fantastic, and our server was incredibly professional and friendly. However, our experience took a turn when a bug flew into my cocktail. After asking another server for help, Manager Louis came over, but he dismissed our concern because he didn't see the bug.
I felt disrespected and accused of dishonesty, especially after spending $500 on our meal. It's not about the $10; it's about basic respect. While another manager and our server later apologized and took care of the drink, the initial interaction left a sour taste.
Louis's attitude earned a 1-star rating from me. A great dinner should never be ruined by poor customer service!

First time visiting. I came in for my birthday.
I ordered 2 of the musaka mules- delicious
1 order of crispy rice with tuna tartar - I didn’t like the tuna . Tasted like it had mayonnaise. But I still ate it
1 order of gyoza - delicious and the sauce that came with it too
1 order of Senmu roll- taste like fish . Not what I expected but pretty good
1 order of there new roll -kitakori I believe it’s called. Had the a-5 steak in it. It was good but super tiny . And it was the most expensive item
Overall a delicious meal

I come to Ozumo for business lunches sometimes and I'm so glad they are in the neighborhood. They have a delightful staff, the food is excellent, and it's a nice ambiance for a business conversation.
On a recent occasion I left behind a reusable coffee mug. They noticed and actually chased me down to the entrance of my office building (both the server and the restaurant manager) to ensure didn't go without it. Most places would just place it in a lost / found. They really do take extra steps to ensure the experience is perfect.
They're great anytime, I come for the happy-hours and the dinners but I particularly appreciate the mid-day group over there.
Thanks Ozumo!

One of my favorite Japanese spots. If you get a window table, you may have a close up view of the immensity of the bay bridge - pretty with lights at night. The sushi is excellent - varied, and of high quality. All the rolls I’ve tried have been good.
Went there again recently. The food is still excellent but our waiter tried to upsell us on Sashimi multiple times to the most expensive items on the menu when I had not asked for advice. He also recommended more sashimi than we could possibly have eaten (I accepted some of his recommendations and it was still way too much). For 4 people I wanted 2 orders of each - I was naturally assuming 2 orders of 2, not 2 orders of 3! We had a ton of food left over. To begin with he had discouraged us from ordering the sashimi since the kitchen was slower and heavily pushed some of the other cooked dishes. Maybe that was true, but we were with guests so the push was awkward. I’ve also rarely experienced that. On the flip side, he was very solicitous and helpful. And the sashimi and rolls were both great - but I’ve never wasted sashimi before and I did here. The correct thing would have been to say - if that’s not enough you can order more.
The atmosphere was also not as good since there was one very loud birthday group that made conversation hard for everyone else. Still - excellent food and I’ll be back but probably with a different waiter :)

While Ozumo has been one of my favorite Japanese restaurants, I was extremely disappointed at the service and nonchalance of the staff during my last visit. We ordered a few items from their happy hour menu and kept waiting for a dish to arrive for 30 min. We asked 4 different staff members about it, and they used to disappear and then ignore us. Finally the server came, saying that it's not available, behaving as if this service is the new normal at Ozumo.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Ozumo in San Francisco, and it was an extraordinary experience from start to finish.
From the moment we walked in, we were greeted with warm hospitality and an inviting atmosphere.
A special mention goes to the manager, Enrique, who was super nice and constantly checked if we needed anything, ensuring our experience was seamless. Our server, Ben, was excellent, serving us with great care and attention to detail. Jonathan also made sure our table was always clean, adding to the overall pleasant dining experience.
The menu at Ozumo is a testament to the art of Japanese cooking. The flavors were clean and delicate, showcasing the high quality of the ingredients. The sushi rolls were innovative and delicious, each bite offering a perfect balance of textures and tastes.
The beverage menu at Ozumo is equally impressive, featuring a wide range of sake, wine, and cocktails. Our server guided us through the sake list, helping us choose a bottle that perfectly complemented our meal.
Dessert was the perfect ending to our culinary journey. We loved the chocolate cake with ice-cream.
Overall, Ozumo is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience top-notch Japanese cuisine in San Francisco. The combination of exceptional food, impeccable service, and elegant ambiance makes it a standout restaurant that I can't wait to return to. Highly recommended!

Would be a higher rating if the sushi were half the price. Slow service, overpriced, underwhelming sushi. The ume set sushi course for $60 came with only the cheapest fish despite the server telling me there would be bluefin. They made up for it by offering me a complimentary serving of bluefin nigiri, which was nice. Overall, there’s better and cheaper sushi elsewhere.

Our experience started great. We ordered some sashimi that was delicious. Then we ordered fish and sushi. They were both decent, but then we saw a mouse running around. There were three other tables that saw it. The waiters acted like they didn't see it, even though the mouse was going back and forth between different tables and getting a reaction from the customers. I asked one of the waitresses if she knows there's a mouse and then she responded it's fine. No one was comped for anything given for the bad environment, we all loved our appetite. Will never go there again after how they dealt with that situation.

I had the most awful pickup experience at this place. I placed an order to go and I was told it’ll be ready in 20-25 minutes. They made me wait for over an hour and when I asked them what’s taking so long they simply shrugged it off by saying they prioritise in restaurant dining and cannot tell me how long it’ll take. Finally after just over an hour they hand me the food and the dessert is all melted. Clearly it had been outside for too long. Absolutely awful experience. The least they can do is be transparent with the customer so the customer can decide if they want to place an order in the first place.

Ozumo is an exceptional restaurant that offers the best Japanese dining experience in San Francisco. If I were to describe my impression in one word, it would be "amazing."
First and foremost, I must mention the quality of the food. The dishes I ordered were made with fresh ingredients and prepared using exquisite cooking techniques. The sushi, in particular, stood out with its remarkable freshness and deliciousness. I highly recommend the fatty tuna nigiri and the tempura shrimp.
Furthermore, the service at Ozumo is outstanding. The staff is incredibly friendly and provided us with attentive hospitality tailored to our needs. They took the time to explain the dishes and offered suggestions for sake pairings.
The ambiance of the restaurant is also exceptional. The modern interior design skillfully incorporates traditional Japanese elements, creating a serene atmosphere. At the counter seats, you can witness the skilled hands of the chefs and enjoy the experience of having fresh sushi prepared right in front of you.
Overall, Ozumo is undoubtedly one of the finest Japanese restaurants in San Francisco. The quality of the food, the level of service, and the pleasant ambiance all contribute to an exceptional dining experience. I highly recommend visiting Ozumo.
レストランの雰囲気も抜群です。和の要素を上手に取り入れたモダンな内装で、落ち着いた雰囲気が漂っています。カウンター席では、シェフの手さばきを間近で見ることができ、新鮮な寿司を目の前で楽しむことができます。

Convos too good to take photos lol
Out of 2 cocktails, shrimp pork gyozas, hamachi small plate, tofu small plate, some sort of fish or tartare rice chips small plate, fatty tuna/scallop/uni, egg plant yasai, and black cod… the most surprising was the eggplant — it was sweet, slightly sugar coated thus a little crunchy/chewy. The best was the bluefin tuna haha it was sooo delicious.
On the other hand, the black cod and the tarutaru was mediocre (can’t taste the ingredient to the tarutaru)
Overall, everything, except sashimi/nigiri, was a little too salty. It’s definitely a “modern spin” to Japanese, as they advertise.
Between their izakaya and sushi options, I personally liked their sushi a lot more.
The cocktail Giddy Geisha was really delicious tho!
What we ordered (9 items + sparkling water + 2 drinks) was the perfect amount for two. Neither of us eats that much so it’s pretty easy to spend a lot LOL

It’s hard writing this review. If Ozumo was a bar, I would give it 5 stars out of 5. The drinks are amazing, and the sake availability is better than many restaurants in SF.
However, the food was so terrible that it completely ruined my experience. Japanese cuisine, Americanized, is just American raw fish with sauce. The food completely lost the Japanese culture emphasizing simplicity and natural flavor of top tier fish/meat/rice. My toro nigiri was not topped on sushi rice, and it didn’t even have a dash of wasabi in the center to help accentuate the flavor. The A5 wagyu was soaked in sauce that I couldn’t taste the tenderness of the wagyu itself. The nori didn’t smell of the ocean, and there was cheese sauce topped on shishito.
The service was just as American and I had expected more from a restaurant advertising itself as Japanese in origin.

Our first priority on return to San Francisco! Got an early seating and had a long relaxed dinner. This is a busy restaurant, but our table was fine and service was superb.
We started our meal with the Hanabi appetizer, featuring sliced Hachimi, avocado, shredded daikon, and leeks, poured with warm ginger-chili ponzu. The flavors were a delight, offering a perfect balance of freshness and warmth. We paired that with the 49er roll (respectful) also delicious.
The premium sushi platter is expensive, but includes Chutoro and Otoro, premium bluefin tuna belly cuts, a Hokkaido Uni negiri and a sashimi plate to follow, finished with a tray of Unagi! Yes we had a premium Sake, but they have a wide selection available. We also had a bit of the waygu negiri.
The quality of the fish was outstanding, and everything was exceptionally fresh and flavorful. Some of the best I have been able to find in the States.
Overall, wonderful! Service impeccable! Can be expensive but worth the cost for a special occasion.

We originally made a reservation for outdoors but there was a rainstorm so we called to change it to an indoor reservation at the sushi bar. We arrived at our scheduled 8:30 time and they said sorry we don’t see your reservation but we can give you the original time. It was already 8:30 and they had heat lamps so we said ok.
We ordered their pre fixed Valentine’s Day menu and got our first dish within the first 15 min, then it took over an hour and a reminder to get the second. Then it started getting cold and I put on my jacket but my right sleeve was soaked, there was a drip in the patio roof. Then we saw mice running around. Bottom line, the food was ok but not enough to get over all the other variables. Glad we tried it but bummed with the overall experience. We were expecting more.

Our experience at Ozumo Restaurant in San Francisco was truly delightful. The warm welcome from the hostess set the tone for an enjoyable evening, and we were seated promptly.
To start our meal, we opted for the Hanabi, a dish featuring sliced Hachimi, avocado, shredded daikon, and leeks, poured with warm ginger-chili ponzu. The flavors were a delight, offering a perfect balance of freshness and warmth. The edamame glazed with tamari & garlic made for a tasty and satisfying starter option.
The Otoro, premium bluefin tuna belly, was a highlight of the evening. It was incredibly fresh and practically melted in my mouth, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to quality ingredients.
For the kids, the California Roll and Spicy Tuna were a big hit, providing a familiar yet delicious introduction to sushi. We also enjoyed the Senmu rolls, featuring hamachi, salmon, spicy tuna, tempura flake, cucumber, tobiko, and sesame sauce. The combination of flavors in this roll was outstanding.
Overall, Ozumo Restaurant delivered a memorable dining experience with its warm hospitality, flavorful dishes, and a perfect blend of traditional and creative sushi options. A definite recommendation for anyone seeking an exceptional sushi experience in San Francisco.

Quick lunch at the end of the street.
Chirashi doesn’t have a lot of fish slides, but the selection with is fairly nice, with scallops and botan shrimp. The rice is good. The grains are slightly sticky and bouncy and subtly sweet.
Tamagoyaki is actually the highlight. I don’t usually appreciate it in chirashi bowls because they take the space of more expensive fish cuts, but this is one of the best tamagoyaki I’ve had— Eggy, earthy, not too sweet at all.
The seaweed salad exceeds my expectations. It isn’t the usual thin seaweed strings and there are refreshing radish pieces. The ume shiso dressing has a prominent shiao flavor, though I’d prefer the it to be less sweet and more citrusy/sour.
Service is minimal and minimalist. It’s lunch time and everyone is in a rush. I didn’t even have time to request less rice.
It’s a little odd to be the only person placed at the sushi bar but I do enjoy watching the chefs.

The service staff are very friendly but appear inexperienced a server would have repeatedly come back to our table and hesitate literally stuttering in his steps as if deciding whether to serve us or not.
The food was astonishingly mediocre. The beef was cooked just fine, but nothing notable. Same with the fish. The specialty rolls were surprisingly flavorless given the amount of sauce drizzled on top.
The brussel sprouts were delicious.
It's depressing to spend $70 per person at a meal and still come up with mediocre food. They certainly have the prices and atmosphere of a high-end restaurant, but the food does not close the deal.

Despite pricey offerings, the dining experience was off. The room was very cold and drafty, the portions were disappointingly small, and the flavors were balanced but meek. Service was kind and careful, but did not make up for a serving of just two small sea scallops on a $30 plate. Also, $8 for a bowl of standard miso soup does not beckon me back. In addition, no brown rice. You won't get what you pay for.

This used to be my favorite sushi place in San Francisco, and it’s still decent, but after not going there since before Covid, my wife and I went back and I was disappointed. It was totally fine and the fish was fresh, but not the five star place it used to be.

Everything was awesome, only thing I could ask to improve is the bar service. Took too long to get our drinks but the taste was good. Nigiris and sushi rolls were delicious, crispy rice with Mayo salmon was incredibly good. If you’re ordering desert, choco-chan is a must!

Some of the best sushi and japanese appetizers I have had in the country. Went based on a recommendation from a co-worker while visiting in town and did not disappoint with flavor and fish quality

Came here on Saturday for the first time to celebrate my cousin's engagement. Immediate 5 stars for him throwing the party with appetizers and an open bar. The food was spectacular and my wife has to constantly remind me to share with the rest of the party-goers (just kidding... kind of lol).
Our bartender for the evening was Nicole, and she was very cool! I asked her about the house sake and she gave me a brief history of the restaurant's in house sake sommelier, and let me do a quick tasting. I have never been much of a sake drinker, but I now understand the appeal! If I didn't live across the bay, I'd pop in more often!

First off - an amazing service by the bartenders and management. They welcomed us in as soon as we walked in the door. Carlos is so kind and funny we notice he’s really close with his customers. Enrique, the manager, was so welcoming and attentive!
The food is amazing and fresh and the happy hour is one of the best in the city. Will be coming back

The first round of my drinks was right but the next one was not. I don't drink my whiskey with ice because it ruins the taste. Even if you ask the waitress and waiter that the drink isn't correct and they still serve it back. Maybe the waiter thought that I wasn't paying attention, so he still served it back. The food was great but make sure it was right too. It was super busy because of some big conference happening in the city. It's expensive and not all listed in the menu that we ordered was served so have someone keep track of the tab. This is my 1st time so maybe next time will do better.

We had an amazing service experience at the bar , drinks were fabulous and food was fantastic. I feel like we tried at least half the items on the menu , it was so good. We tried the new dessert they added to the menu and it was out of this world by flavor and textures.

Not great sushi for too much money. I paid for the view and proximity to ferry. The service was charming and pleasant; the plating was elegant. The fish was just not up to par with the price point. We had poke, gyoza, futomaki and the house named roll. Not fresh tasting at all. Kind of a bummer.
But the Hitochino was delicious.

The food was good (not outstanding). The servers did not know what dishes/drinks they were serving.

We chose Ozumo because we only wanted to have sushi for lunch, while there are not many options in San Francisco that offer lunch time. The atmosphere was cozy, the service was fantastic and the food was absolutely worth the money. Our favorites were karaage, gindara (grilled fish), matcha ice cream and black sesame mochi. The food was so delicious and authentic that we even ordered the second dish for Gindara.

This is a very confused resturant. they are playing gym music (why??)
The food is okay - nothing to write home about, but the portions are very small which makes it bad for the price.
Service was kinda spotty, they got my order wrong.
If youre super hungry and every other resturant in SF is closed, I'd go here.

The food was sadly average. I ordered two rolls and both were not well packed with the rice not rolled properly. The rolls themselves were equal in flavor to any sushi place really. The bass special we got was a laughable portion (about two dime sized bites) for $33!? The fried tempura was decent, but it’s fried veggies and hard to go wrong there! The winner was the miso soup which was actually pretty fantastic and was a thick rich broth. The service was good and our waiter was helpful and attentive. Maybe go for a cocktail and a miso soup on a cold day?

Service was ok... Considering the menu was in Japanese the waitress didn't have any insight or recommendations. It's like she didn't enjoy the restaurant she worked at. Food was ok. And I've been to high end places in Vegas and Chicago. My expectations for prices were high. Spent $20 on pork belly that was definitely smaller than my app of gyoza. The eggs in my dish were gross, hard plastic like outter shell and flavorless. If you're a normal person who comes here hungry you won't be satisfied. Sushi is super expensive. My co workers got 2 fish dishes they said we good. And expect a 5% food tax in San Francisco to account for the minimum wages of $15.... You aren't supposed to tip but they ask for a 25% tip anyway .... It's astonishing really.

One of my favorite spots in the city. I love to sit at the bar (former bartender) and Ben is one of the best bartenders
You can't tell but the back side of the restaurant is HUGE so it might seem chill at the sake bar side but they might also be SLAMMED without you knowing it.
Anytime I'm in the area though I come see if Ben is working. Right by embarcadero it's a great stop for a meal and a drink.
The food menu changed up a bit so here's the recent one. Everything is pretty good, not too pricey for what it is and where it is.
I normally get something salmon or kama and add rice. Today in particular we did some shareables. The vegetable sashimi was surprisingly good. The desserts were amazing.
I had a rice pulp drink as a non alcoholic cheers beverage as I gave up alcohol recently.
Kanpai!

This is the spot for delicious sushi at lunch time, the rolls are huge, we sat in very comfortable couches.

The sushi here is next level. This was our second time having dinner here and both times were were blown away with the quality of sushi. If you sit at the sushi bar it's fun to talk to the head sushi chef and watch them make sushi. We talk about how good the food was for days after. Highly recommend.
