Food was excellent! Truly enjoyed the flavors and freshness of the fish.
Beverages-Sapporo and Large Sake- yeah! It rocked for end of work day drink.
Service- Our server was so kind, explained the menu, and made us feel like we were the only ones on the whole place. (Even though the restaurant was full).
Ambiance: Hawaiian theme and I felt like I was in Hawaii.

This is my favorite Sushi place in SD. Unfortunately, the place was sold! My message to the new owners: please don’t change the menu, don’t replace the menu, flavors, decorations, the people responsible for the kitchen and don’t go crazy with increasing the prices! Please take care of the employers who work here because they tend to do such a good job!
The place is unique to every single thing they have and that is why it’s busy and has many loyal customers. Please keep it this way. Thank you, loyal customer since 2016!

I love this place!!! Considering I don't really like sushi, that's saying a lot. The evening is always busy, and be aware of their hours because they close for a while during the day and stop taking orders 15-ish min before close.
I always order to-go. The food is incredibly delicious, but the monkey brains are my absolute favorite. The prices are great for the quantity and quality.
They have a very friendly, relaxed, and laid back style. The place is small for both customers and employees, large parties would be better off ordering for pick up.

I have alwyas been a fan of sushi diner1. Been there for few times and never had a problem. Today was my first time visiting sushi diner2 since the closure.
I experienced a less-than-friendly atmosphere during my visit. The white server's attitude who seats down the customers seemed unwelcoming, affecting the overall dining experience. It would be great if the staff could enhance customer interactions for a more positive environment.

We showed up here at 8:40pm on a Friday night and it was not busy whatsoever. They close at 9:30pm so you would assume that they would still be able to seat us considering that there were multiple empty tables inside. Instead, we waited outside for 20 minutes. We assumed the waitress might have not saw us waiting but then her friend (I assume her friend because she hugged the customer) walked into the store from behind us and was able to be seated immediately. We were being patient assuming that maybe the waitress was catching up on finishing orders until I saw multiple customers finishing and leaving the store. Not once did the waitresses think to let us know that they weren't accepting anymore customers as we waited outside (which is odd since she was able to seat her friend immediately). Instead, we were waiting outside in the cold for 20 minutes as I catch glances of the waitress looking in our direction and laughing lol. Just a terrible situation overall and I would not want to return whatsoever.
It's really a shame because I used to frequent their other location when they were both known as Sushi Diner and it was one of my favorite sushi places.

This place has went down hill in management. When they had the restaurant on Mesa college drive the environment was better all around this second location being the only location now is just not the vibe the Sushi Diner 1 had. The waitress was respectful but the management was disgusting and rude and made the experience hostile. That lady needs either retraining or to find a different career because talking and being rude to paying customers is simply disgusting. I will miss the food here because the Sushi is really good but being disrespected by staff and the shady work the management was on I will happily find a different sushi restaurant who has better customer service. This is the second time I have went to this restaurant and was disappointed by the services.

I have been eating at Sushi Diner for 15 years. This is hands down the best sushi in San Diego. Surf videos, Reggae music to add to the chill, relaxing atmosphere. Can't get any better than Sushi Diner. Try the Smokin' Jamaican (smoked salmon&cream cheese) and Hang Loose Roll (has bacon!) youll be hooked!

3 parties waiting to dine: 2 party of 2 and 1 party of 4. Opening at the bar, 2 tables for 2, and 1 table for 4.
One party of 2 sat at a small table. One party of 2 were sat at a booth which can accommodate 4 people. The party of 4 left standing outside waiting while a table for 2 is empty, the bar has 2 empty seats.
That made no business sense.

Quality and affordable sushi plus poke bowls, plates, and more. Recommend spicy garlic edamame, avocado tempura app, create your own sushi roll (request with your server and they bring you a paper to fill in), spicy jawaiian roll. Sometimes at lunch you can walk right in, but normally you add your name and party size to the sheet outside and wait outside until called in. Tip- The rolls are large pieces, ask for 10 piece cut and it will be cut smaller.

EDIT: After reading the other negative reviews from at least 6+ months ago. It seems this is not "a bad day" for this waitress, she is always like this. And based on the managements lack of addressing this issue. I am forced to change my 3 Star, to 1 Star. Her attitude is unacceptable and given no changes made. She must be owner so I will not recommend or return.
We came to have a birthday lunch at what was supposed to be a good vibes ragea sushi place, but instead, we got a very bad vibes waitress who completely soiled our dining experience.
She was very visibly under duress and would come by asking us if the food was good every couple minutes, then go duck around the kitchen and loudly complain about the guests.
I guess she thought she was being discreet, I don't know if she just needed to hit a joint or what, but she was the worst wait staff dining experience I've had in YEARS.
The islander woman was great. She was friendly, but the blonde woman with glasses was a total karen and honestly a bad fit for the kind of lax atmosphere they were trying to go for.
Otherwise, the rolls were good. I wish there was a little more diversity in the rolls instead of 2/3rds being the same base cream cheese, crab and eel sauce and crunch. Poke Roll was probably the best roll we ordered.
I was extremely disappointed with the 4:20 Crunch Roll as it's completely inedible as a single bite, it's the size of a hockey puck. They just fell apart, tasty on their own but I had to dump most of the crab just to enjoy the individual parts and overall was a bad experience and a huge waste of ingredients.
Gordon Ramsy would probably do a whole new episode of Kitchen nightmare if he saw these rolls and the waste of crab (imitation or not)
The tempura avocado roll was unfortunately the same.
It might have been an off day for the waitress but she honestly seems like she hated all the customers based on how she was loudly badmouthing our table and the two take out orders and the young couple who walked in after us.
Hope she lightens up and, maybe she was out of 4:20? Either way, hard pass on going back.

It's a cute atmosphere, but the last time I went there, their sushi made me sick. Sometimes the rolls are cut too large and hard to eat. Another time they were quiet and the waitress plopped down next to me on the bench and started talking about her day. I didn't know her.

I really have to give it to the girls that were working Monday evening 6/28. There was a full house and they were hustling! Our server was so sweet and made sure we were taken care of. The food was fresh, delicious, and I was surprised at how affordable it was. I really love the surfer decor and the vibe. Definitely coming back here again, I loved everything we ordered and 10/10 service.

1st time with the sushi diner2 (my husband knows the owner since he operated the original sushi diner1), the food was good but the service was really bad😮💨. We saw an empty tables but the server didn’t call the customers on the waitlist even though it was not busy at all (Tuesday night) . We waited around 20 mins and after we sat down , we were ready to order right away. We ordered about 7 items with simple rolls / miso soup and hot tea. Hot tea came late (they said they had to boil the water , ok it is fine) and kept waiting almost 30 mins. But the tables came after us and they got all their rolls, and the server just noticed that we got nothing on the table. She came to the kitchen at the time with our first plate out without our miso soup (boiling water again? 🙃)
We complained to another server about forgetting our food. She said the chef tried to do it all at the same time and serve.... for real? Because we got one each and waited and one each and waited. If you forgot, just tell the truth. We very disappointed with the service , servers should take more action + attention + attitude with their job and we WON'T COME BACK AGAIN. I have been a server and did for service industry more than 10 years. The owner should pay more attention to this point to avoid your restaurant from falling to the ground.

Service can sometimes lag so just be prepared it could take a bit longer to get your food but it’s well worth it.

I used to go to the original Sushi Diner often, and have been here before, too, but the situation with one of the servers on Tuesday was beyond horrible service. If you scope the other reviews here and other places you'll see that there's a server who keeps being mentioned (older Caucasian woman). I don't know her name because she tried so hard to avoid us so I couldn't see if she had a name tag. Anyway, let's break it down:
Situation: Tuesday night. No line, no one left on the waiting list. Great. We pop into doorway to let the servers know we're there since it's nighttime and I wasn't sure they could see us through the door. The server mentioned above proceeds to tell us to "WAIT OUTSIDE." Wow, ok. I get the message but didn't need the raised voice. We wait outside, seeing the restaurant empty out, tables cleared to the point there there are so many available tables to sit down. Cool! But somehow this lady keeps coming to these tables to clean them, even the ones right by the door, and avoids letting us in. Even as she chatted with some people who were leaving and walking out the door I tried to ask her about the wait and she quickly scurried away. Like she was right by me as I was next to her in the doorway...
She kept going to the back and chatting and doing anything else. I went back outside and then, later, inside again to get someone's attention. Made eye contact with a chef who mouthed if I'm still waiting and they went to talk to someone to check on us. Waited some more and the person taking phone orders eventually checked outside after his calls. He asked if we were waiting and we said yeah. So almost 20 minutes later at a place that had no wait and had plenty of clean, empty tables we were allowed inside. The scurrying server silently slid the menus on our table from behind me and scurried away again--said absolutely nothing. Huh?
Luckily the person who served us during the rest of the time was nice. One part of our order was missed even though they mentioned it was coming and even though we mentioned we were still waiting for it when we got the check. Had to ask about it like 3 times to get the roll after I was done eating.
Food: food was ok. I liked my rolls as they have been ones I've ordered since forever. But for a sushi place that is just ok, not even as fresh as I remember it at the original location, it doesn't have much to offer. For what I paid here I could have gotten better quality fish and way better service for sure.
Overall: That server is going to run this place to the ground. It's already happening. It's a shame because there are some OGs from the original location that I really like and do a good job, and I saw some other staff step up when the rude server lady didn't. I feel bad for the other staff working alongside this server and I wonder if this server is the owner or something because with that kind of behavior I have no idea how she's still working there. The food is just ok and for the price with such awful treatment from that server who was avoiding us it's like... Why even come here?

Went for a friend’s birthday dinner and it was amazing! We had regular and vegetarian sushi rolls and both were delicious. It is a little smaller so if you have a bigger party just make sure to have someone ask for a table ahead of time so you aren’t waiting too long. 100% recommend!

I will say, I’ve been here several times and love their food. But the last two times my friend and I got the same server. There was a tiny wait, but was busy. First time with her (white older woman).. thought maybe she was having a bad day or stressed and silently let it go, but my friend and I gave each other eye contact seeing it was clearly off... but still didn’t understand her immediate attitude that was not provoked.
She was rushing us, and even cut me off as I was ordering. I got firm and said we were still putting in orders. She seemed to get nicer after that.
Second visit time… same waitress, and it was the same situation with this attitude with inconsistent behavior from what we even ordered the time before with her. This time it was empty with zero wait at the location. She seemed to be in a rush mode still, and just a condescending feeling.
But then back to being nice, while suggesting an appetizer. It was really weird. Then just disappeared at the end having someone else help us.
I have been a server for a long time before, and I’m extremely understanding and patient. But her shifty attitude had made both of uneasy not want to visit again. Or at least have her as our server.
I hope the owner can get that under control.

Cozy small sushi restaurant with great customer service and great fresh sushi. The prices are reasonable and the menu is huge with many meal options other than sushi. We used to love coming here, especially for the salmon nigiri which had beautiful thick pieces of salmon at a great price. What has become very disappointing is that it is not consistent. Sometimes you get the perfect salmon nigiri, sometimes you get it at half the size. Like everything, the prices have gone up a lot but it used to be worth it because it was so good, now it is not as worth it to take the chance and possibly miss.

The lady in charge of the list was a TIP HOG, we were a party of 7, before we got seated at the line outside, we ask to make sure we were skipped. she commented, “we dont really cater to huge party, we’re a small restaurant?” Like she couldve just said theyre working on it, AND so we ate about almost 200$ so our homie tipped 40$ cash on the table. Put in 1$ on the receipt, i think he just wanted to even out the number or something like that. So we head out, and she approached us and asked “is there something wrong with our service? Cuz? The 1$?” She couldve just ask if we can leave a review about the service blah blah but she asked why 1$, but We just said its on the table. Like? I get it they make money off tip, but since when did tip become mandatory, tip gratuity, if i dont feel great about it then it is what it is. Plea she wasnt there to get our order or give out our food it was a different lady, it was the asian lady so why this white lady come up to us asking about tip when she wasnt even there for the most part she just sat us down, so if anything, our tip should go to the asian lady. I shouldve known is was going to be bad when a white lady works at an asian restaurant. Lol will not be coming back. Or maybe i will but will have to check if shes there or not.

Work just down the street. We eat here quite often. Food is great and we love it. But what we are always afraid of is getting the one waitress that is so rude we will often times find a different place to go. She is extremely rude and condescending. Her attitude and body language make it very uncomfortable to go inside. She treats customers absolutely terribly. And heaven forbid that you ask extra soy sauce for your to go order, she will let you know how much of an inconvenience it is for her and then proceed to tell you, in a very rude manner, "there's some in the bag!" Lady, there is 1 dang packet in the bag!!! If something is not done with that waitress, we will stop eating here. Love the food, complements to the sushi chefs!

Nice casual sushi spot, prices are good for decent rolls if you want something casual. If you're looking for quality fish and diverse flavor though, don't let the high ratings fool you -- it's not a "must try" or even among the best in San Diego. Quality-wise it's like a great "fast food" version of sushi rolls.
This isn't like a high-end/fancy date night spot, but good for a quick fix if you're craving and in a pinch.

I have dined here 4 to 5 times. Lightning-fast service and great lively atmosphere. While I was impressed with the quick seating and friendly service, the quality of the food was a bit inconsistent.
On my most recent visit, I found that all of the sushi rolls had too much rice, which affected the ratio of filling to rice. However, the nigiri was fresh, and it's what I would recommend ordering if you decide to dine here.
Despite the fluctuating quality of the food, the restaurant is always packed, and I've never had to wait too long for a table.

Delicious Japanese food!
The place labels itself as Jawaiian, which I believe is a mash up of Jamaican and Hawaiian. There’s a strong Bob Marley theme.
The staff are very friendly and capable. It’s a busy place, but everyone, including the other patrons, are very friendly, but also working very quickly.
We did not have a reservation and the place was above max capacity when we arrived- apparently a very popular restaurant. While we waited (about 10 minutes) for our table, we learned that the origin of the restaurant name comes from the founders dream to create a family atmosphere often found in small town diners. Despite the fact that the word diner is nearly never associated with sushi or other Japanese cuisine, the family atmosphere prevails. We received entree recommendations from fellow patrons and observed that everyone was being treated kindly.
We ordered the Trenchtown and Aloha sushi (we both preferred trenchtown, but both were superior). The mixed tempura was delightful, light and tasty. The miso soup was a great appetizer. We were so full we could barely tough the seared ahi salad. All of it: Sooooo good!
We loved it and will return. We’re even making a mental note of where Sushi Diner1 is located, just in case we find ourselves in their neighborhood during meal time.
A lot of to-go orders go through this place as well.
Generous portions at good prices.

A coworker invited me here for lunch and he says it's one of his favorite sushi places.
Service gets 2 ⭐⭐ because she wasn't around much and didn't check to see how everything was and just a general lack of friendly.
Atmosphere ⭐⭐⭐⭐ and the only reason not 5 stars is the size of the place. It's small and we had to wait outside to be seated, and when our server asked if we signed in, we were confused because the hand written sign said please wait outside to be seated... So we did.
Saving the best for last.... Food ⭐⭐⭐⭐... The menu is full of choices and they all sound amazing! I chose the Tiki and the 96 degrees... The flavor was there and my mouth was happy with every bit that made it that far! But these rolls weren't really wrapped tight enough to manipulate with chop sticks. I'm no chop sticks pro by any means, but I don't usually have a problem getting my food to my mouth! But.... The food was good!

Jennika was the best server I’ve ever had
Also Teresa the manager is definitely not racist. She’s fabulous. I’m POC and she treated me like a queen. Thanks sushi diner 2

Food was good. Our waitress was friendly, but I have to complain about the manager/owner. We were third on the waitlist list, she called everyone in, and there were about 6 empty tables, while we were still waiting outside to be called in. We never did get called in, so we walked in and we were finally seated. The entire time in the restaurant, I just got nasty glares from this manager/owner, though she walked around greeting all other customers. The only time she approached our table was to take our empty plates and check. I do not want to be that person, but we were the only Hispanics during our entire stay.

Second time I’ve been to this place
The food is great but the service was not up to par
Being the only Mexican couple there it was obvious we were ignored and left outside to be seated after half of the establishment’s tables were empty. throughout our stay we felt unwelcomed by two of the staff members getting uncomfortable glares by them.
Not cool

This is the second time visiting and have felt like I wasn’t treated right again. I don’t want to say this word, but it felt like racism. I think it was the manager or the owner, who’s attitude and service was horrible. We felt extremely unwelcome like it was wrong to be our color. The food is good, but how uncomfortable it was to dine there.. they have lost my business because this has happened multiple visits.

Great local sushi spot. All the classics and some fun "reggae style" rolls that make it unique.

We have been buying sushi here for a long time now but since the place is small, we had never really dined in. We have always just ordered to-go. In addition to that, my husband has always been the one to place the order for us. Well, today I had the misfortune of placing the order myself and was greeted by kind people behind the bar (the guys making the sushi) but when I went to actually place the order I swear I almost didn't. The waitress was so rude. For starters, she didn't even offer me a menu and so I went off the top of my head. I asked for extra sauce on a teriyaki bowl and she said "you'll just pay extra for that." I said okay and mentioned that sometimes it has very little and sometimes a lot. She replied with well you will get it in a container on the side, but in a condescending manner! The amount of attitude I got from her in the 2 minutes it took me to order was enough for me reconsider me ever going back. Turns out she is always like this, even over the phone.
The food is great, and it makes me sad to say this but I really don't know that we will be going back after this. We spend more than $50/visit regularly at this location. Another reviewer said it perfectly. This person is "running this place to the ground" and pushing away even the most loyal customers with her poor people skills.
And in case anyone needs clarification her name is Teresa. All the other employees there have been perfectly nice and accommodating.

This is my go to sushi place, the prices are good the fish is fresh and the sushi rolls are flavourful. I tried the sushi bowl for the first time and it did not disappoint, way better and cheaper then going to a poke place.

This was my first time here and I must say, as someone who loves trying new sushi places to find the best deals for my money, this one has prob landednin my top 3. The quality of food was great as well as the pricing. I ordered the lunch special and I walked out of this place full, which usually only happens after a ton of rolls, I will be coming back here for sure!!!

Ok to begin this review is being based on 2 visits both happened on the same day of the week and a week apart. To begin when I walked in this evening me and my girlfriend were given a table but we basically waited for about 5 minutes until a server saw that his coworkers sat another party down and gave them menu's before we got menu's. He apologized and gave my girlfriend a free sprite. After ordering our food it came mostly complete and was very good but a roll we orderd and our pot stickers never came out. We told the server that's been most helpful and he said he apologized on behalf of the restaurant and removed the items off the bill but still was going to bring the food out. This also happened the first time we came out last week. The roll took about 5 minutes but the pot stickers took about 10 to 15 minutes to come out. I was quite mad about the service tonight although i tried to hide it as much as I could. Kaydence (sorry if i misspelled it) the server was above and beyond when it came to customer service. He helped alot on service and helping coming to peace with my bill. the other servers where very shy to even say anything and made me and my girlfriend feel invisible. Although Kaydence was the star of the night I probably wouldn't go back again I would give him a 5 star if I could but only giving the restaurant a 2 star rating.
