Blending classic techniques with adventurous Pacific Rim flavors, culinary pioneer Roy Yamaguchi created an entirely new approach to fine dining. The first Roy's opened in Honolulu in 1988 and we've spread our warm hospitality and passion for innovative and creative cuisine and beverage around the world ever since. Join us tonight in San Diego, CA to discover the fresh ingredients and outstanding seafood, expertly prepared by our local chefs that made us famous.
First time trying Roy's Restaurant, which is on the same property as Marriott Hotel. While walking around the hotel, my wife noticed the food advertising for seafood at Roy's Restaurant. My wife had her heart on lobster and shrimp. I noticed the reviews were all over the chart. I was lazy and didn't want to go somewhere else, so I gave them the benefit of dout, and I ordered takeout
(takeout was the wrong choice by me). Who knew?
For my wife, Shellfish Sampler* Grilled Maine Lobster Tail - Sea Scallop Teppanyaki Shrimp - Yukon Mash - Blue Crab Basil Cream - Lobster Essence $69.00.
According to my wife, the seafood was tasteless.
For my dinner, I ordered
Roy's Classic Combo Misoyaki 'Butterfish' - Braised Short Rib of Beef $55. The Butterfish was average and lacking natural taste. The Braised Short Rib gave new meaning to "Short." Short in size and two bites, I finished the rib. For the price of the dinner, you would like it to be a prime cut or a bigger portion. My vegetables were also undercooked, and I noticed salty pockets throughout my meal.
Unfortunately, I don't think I will return to this restaurant. Maybe other Roy's will have better cuisines/chefs.
Expensive lesson $$$$$$$,s.
I think they have a great location overlooking the marina, and it would be a better place for drinks and appetizers. Maybe? Epic view.

I've been coming here for years (to include the Roy's (Roy Yamaguchi) in La Jolla and the dining experience now has gotten worse.
Made reservations and we arrived at said time. The front host was nice but they all could put on a smile. Very dead in personality which to me is annoying. Greet people ask them how they are doing while you walk them to their table.
Our server was also ok. There's no "Aloha" spoken here. I also asked about edamame with the spices and they didn't offer that either. I know the other locations stopped giving edamame unless you ask for it.
Food:
Misoyaki Butterfish
Braised Short Rib
The short rib was tender and good in flavor. The butterfish? What happened? It's not like how it used to be. There was no miso flavor. The fish still was soft as how butterfish is but dang no taste at all. I'll label my photo with the most current photo.
Lastly, my friend had to ask for another wine glass because there was something floating in the cup. And no, it was not particles from the cork screw. The server ended up charging her for a different glass of wine and mind you we had a bottle.
Overall, it was a horrible experience for me.

Food is great but boy the service is as slow as the turtles they serve on the menu. Lousy service for the price they're asking. 35 mins for a freaking dessert when they told us it will only take 10 mins. Not the best place if you're waiting to go to an event and still gave yourselves two hours. Definitely going back to Sally's and not Roy's. This place is mediocre

We had a wonderful experience. We sat outside the view was beautiful. Our waiter was excellent and everything we ordered was delicious. The filet-mignon was perfectly cooked as ordered. The Ahi was just perfect and full of flavor. And the soufflé was the best. Definitely will be back soon. Excellent dining experience.

Roy‘s Restaurant is a nice restaurant right at the Waterfront area in San Diego. The Signature Drink „Roy’s Hawaiian Martini“ was delicious, the Coconut Rum adds an interesting taste to the Classic. Apart from that, the Filet Mignon was on point and even the side was fantastic. The view from the balcony is awesome, the service very good, both friendly and reasonably quick. The prices however are a little too high.

Roy’s Restaurant in San Diego offers a fantastic dining experience with a unique fusion of flavors. As a vegetarian, I was thrilled to try their vegetarian sushi roll, and it did not disappoint—it was fresh, beautifully presented, and bursting with vibrant flavors. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff is attentive and friendly. A must-visit for anyone looking for creative and delicious options!

I’m rating this Roy’s Restaurant 2 stars for many reason. Overall the food did not meet my expectations(I have loved Roy’s and I have been to many other restaurants of their locations). The food came in quickly and that was good. And overall the service was okay too. But quickly we noticed the main issue! There was flies all over us and was on are food and swarming our table. It was disgusting and quickly we lost are appetite! They were in are drinks. That had caused us to not enjoy our meal. It felt very gross and we had to leave the table while waiting for the check to come because of how many flies and bugs there were! I am not sure if they were at other tables too. Later I had talked to one of the managers he told me that they have been struggling with this issue for many months and they still can’t fix it! I was still very disappointed! To me and my family Roy’s was a very nice and tasty restaurant. But at this location it sure did not feel like it! I added photos of the flies and I still feel disappointed!

3rd and Final Attempt to contact you.
I've now reached out to you 3 times as you have requested regarding my poor experience with Roys dinner service with no response. I've left my cell number and emails to no avail.
This tells me you really have no interest in a customer's feedback and look to improve your product and services, or you are on the verge of going out of business. With the poor economy in this area it wouldn't be a surprise. Wishing you all the best going forward.
On Thu, Jan 2, 2025 at 8:33 PM:
Hello,
I'm following up again with my complaint on our experience on
Thank you for responding to my google review. I generally don't take the time to post a review unless it's to one extreme or the other but this event warranted this 2 star review.
The reservation was for a party of 6 at a round table with window seating which we did not receive. The reservation was made well in advance under the last name XXXXX. We did get seated upstairs to a sparsely decorated area with an unlit Christmas tree in what appears to be an overflow storage room. This dining room was so brightly lit it felt like we were preparing for an educational seminar.
I realize that on major holidays everyone needs to pack some patience, but this exceeded all expectations to the downside of a fine dining experience.
With that being said here is where Roys fell short:
We sat there for a full 30 minutes before a server even acknowledged we were there. We received water then an additional 15 minutes passed for a runner to ask if we would like some cocktails. The coctails arrived 30 minutes later. My daughter asked for a Bleu cheese dirty martini (more on this later) All drinks arrived and we were hoping this was going to be a better experience going forward. Oscar finally arrived to take our dinner order which we gave him. He explained he had 5 tables downstairs that he just was finishing up. I thanked him for his hardwork and said we hoped to see more of him since his workload was subsiding.
30 minutes later, our appetizers arrived and they were acceptable. We did notice a table that had come in about 20 minutes after we sat down and was already on their entrees.
Another 30 minutes goes by then Oscar shows up asking if we wanted another round of drinks and we said absolutely. Time goes by and they finally arrive and he explains to my daughter that her Bleu Cheese olive martini cannot be made as they were out of blue cheese olives and proceeds to put down a dirty martini in front of her with the olives void of pimento. How half-assed is that? Proper protocol would be to ask the customer if they would like something else as her drink is not available as she requested. Or better yet how about being better prepared in the bar for a holiday dinner?
By now we are 2 hours into a Prix Fixe dinner menu. Our Entrees finally arrive. Cold was the general temperature of all the entrees. Mine was Chilean Sea Bass and I assure you it was on the verge of being spoiled. I asked if the fish was fresh and Oscar assured me it was, let me tell you, it was not! The steak and lobster meal, steak was tough and over cooked and dry, and the lobster was greasy and slimy from sitting in the tempura preparation. The other steaks ordered were also tough, if I didn't know better it would seem they were cooked previously and reheated on the grill.
After the entrees we waited another 30 minutes for the desserts. To end this long misery of disappointments we asked for the check asap.
Total time for this dinner was 3 hours for a prix fixe menu! That is unacceptable on its own but to serve up mediocre food just adds insult to injury.
Completely Disappointed,
Place was old and tired. Went for Christmas dinner....big mistake there. Understaffed and food was of poor to average quality. Prices are high and not a value by any standard. Service took 3 hours for a prix fix menu. Save your money and time, dine elsewhere.

I paid $120 for extremely 2 small potions of salmon, few pieces of vegetables on the plate, we did not enjoy even the quality, and we left the resturant hungry, the manager said this is their headquarters policy and he could do nothing about it. adding few extra pieces of potato or vegetable or even a piece of bread would not be so costly and will make customers happier
it is unfortunate to have such experience in this beautiful location

This was one of the worst dining experiences ever. First, they failed to inform us of a fixed pre fix menu even when calling us to confirm our reservation and finally informing us when we were finally seated. Next, despite a 7:30 PM reservation we weren't seated and received our appetizers until 8:30 PM. The appetizers were so so at best. Then the entrees were not delivered until after 9:00. I've had better filets at Texas Roadhouse, better lobster at Aunt Annie's lobster shack. The service was slow and unhelpful. They ran out of the dessert we wanted and would not make other accommodations other than just offering the remaining desserts that were available. For $100+ per person (no alcohol) this was an expensive and poor tasting disaster.
Extremely dissatisfying for Roys.

Lackluster service. Not greeted at front desk / had to ask for help. Food served cold and without a steak knife. Not what I’d expect from a $180 dinner for two people. One star since I’d never go back at this price point and to not nail it.

Maybe it was just a bad night for them….
There were three of us at the table, but since the third (me) arrived later there were only two place settings and no effort made to address it. No napkin, silverware, etc.
Appetizers served without plates.
They were probably understaffed and doing their best, but the service was slow. Nice, but slow. This was at 6, so the dinner rush hadn’t started and didn’t appear that busy.
We overheard another server complain to the host that he had too many tables (6) and couldn’t take another one.
The apps I had were actually very good, so no problem with the food quality.

We came back after a wonderful lunch 3 days ago. Unfortunately, we did not have the same experience. There were five of us. Four meals came out wrong.2nd try… still wrong. The manager came over & acknowledged that they still didn’t get it right. She commented that she was going to take care of most of the meal. One of the meals was inedible. They brought complementary desserts. When we received our bill, the manager had taken off 3 drinks, but I still got charged for a glass of wine that I never ordered!! Very disappointing!! At $35 for a salad, this is unacceptable.

100% Recommend! 10/10 their food all of it was delicious! The staff is so attentive and so sweet and the customer service all around was exceptional! I went with my husband for our anniversary and our waiter was amazing! My husband has the filet mignon plate with veggies and brocollini and I had the short prime rib with the mash potatoes and Broccoli and it was phenomenal! For our appetizer we had the spring rolls and those were delicious also. We had the wedge salad I think that's what It was called with vinegrette dressing and soo good! And for dessert had the pineapple upside down cake with cocunut ice cream and the lemon tart. Needless to say we devoured everything! Will definitely be coming back!

This was a beautiful restaurant, but the food was barely sub-par. Higher prices do not always equate great food. I had the lobster bisque, and it was barely luke warm.. had very chewy few chunks of lobster. It was smaller than a baby's portion... it seemed like a sample size! Also it was on the sweeter side, which was not my preference either. Just meh!
I was so unimpressed that I didn't even order a meal. My friend did, and everything was sweet and cold. Our total meal with tip was close to $200 for one salad, my tiny soup, and sea bass entree :( The best thing I could say is..the service was great.

Had a group of 15 out for diner. Menu was fixed with fish, pork chop or chicken as the main. My salad looked like it had been kicked across the kitchen and was missing all the bacon, My main had no gravy for the potatoes or sauce for the chicken. They did bring me a new plate but the comments were flying at the table. None of the 15 would ever go back as everyone said the fish was tasteless and unless you got a thick chop, it was overdone.

Waiter staff inattentive, didn’t pay attention , rarely came back to the table, yikes

Good views of the harbor from the patio.but overall I don’t recommend dining here. I think the only reason why this restaurant stays open is the influx of company dinners from convention center. The food is over priced and the quality and ambience doesn’t match the price tag. I’m a foodie in San Diego and never seen cod on a menu for $60. The fish was overcooked, small portioned and lacked flavor. Plates were sloppy put together in presentation. There are much better places you could go surrounded this area for a nice dinner.

We went to the Bar outside yesterday, ordered drinks and WAITED.
We watched 3 groups come in after us, one group sat down 2 minutes after us and the other two about 5 minutes after us.
We ordered drinks before they even sat down and yet they all got their drinks before us.
We waited an additional 5 minutes after the last group got their drinks, we left when we watched another group that sat right before us GET their second round of drinks.
We went down the road to the Edgewater Grill in Seaport Village and spent a little over $250 on food and drinks where the service was ON POINT.
If you want to be ignored go here.

I didn’t like this place eleven years ago. Nothing changed since then. Went to the bar for quick cold drinks. Ordered Mohito and Aperol. One drink for one person. Drinks were so deluded by ice that on the second sip you’d taste ice to the end of the drink. The bill was not itemized and seemed too high to we had to request itemized bill which had additional drink item which we did not order.

I have been to Roy's many times; very disappointing tonight. Party of 5, allowed 2 hours for dinner to get to the show at Rady's Shell. Told wait staff at the start our plans. Slow service from the beginning. Constantly waving to get someone's attention. No refills offered on drinks. No refill on water. Told it would be 15 min to bring out the desserts. 35 min later after talking to two people we got dessert and had to choke it down. Could not enjoy the food. Won't be back. Expected more when I am paying close to $500 for dinner.

Worst service ever. We were basically ignored the whole time. Came here to celebrate by daughters 21st bday and they forgot get drink for over half the meal. Forgot one order and the server literally never came by to check on us. Manager let us sit at the host stand for 10 mins when we arrived no greeting or anything from her. I have to say this is probably one of the worst service experiences of my life. Food was good but nothing can make up for the terrible horrendous service. Sad thing was the table next to us had a different waitress and she was fabulous and they got great service while we sat there ignored and forgotten about.

Really disappointed. Food was not great. Had to send filet back because ordered medium and it was very rare. Also, the most fat I’ve ever seen on a filet mignon. Boneless short ribs also very fatty. Couldn’t get my kids to eat the mac & cheese. Lava cake was a bit dry. The only that was top notch was the Butterfish. Service was slow and average at best. Server was forgetful and never asked us about beverage refills, we kept having to track him down. Manager never came by our table. I’ve had good experiences at the Roy’s in Newport Beach & Scottsdale in the past but this was quite a contract. Disappointing way to start off our vacation. Especially because last time we were in San Diego we ate at Ruth Chris up the street from here and for the same price Ruth Chris was exceptional.

We went around 6:30ish today. We were placed inside where the sun was beating down on us the whole time. My husband had to move several times and I had my sunglasses on 15 mins upon seating. There were a good amount of other empty tables inside. We would have preferred the hostess to have let us know the situation beforehand or give us the option to wait for another table. The food was pretty good. The macadamian Mahi was okay. My husband got the sea bass which was amazing. Our kids got the 'mac and cheese' which were just buttered noddles 🤷♀️. The service was above average. Overall the seating made it a 4/5 experience.

8:35 pm: Got here at 7:50 pm- it’s almost 8:40pm (50 mins from arrival) and it’s still not here. We Just ordered two rolls of sushi no modifications, nothing special
The place was not packed
There was not a long wait
Trust me. I know it’s not a fast food restaurant .. but to wait this long for TWO 6 piece sushi
It’s a Wednesday evening
Not looking for a fast food style type of service, but , I am also pretty sure I don’t like to wait this long
The 2 star service is for the looooooooong wait
Rationale: private event upstairs so they are backed up
The servers and bus boys are nice.
This is a MANAGEMENT issue. If you know you are going to have a private event , then staff it properly. Anyway- I am hangry as I write this.

Tonight was sad.
It started with the two hostesses that are not the face of any business that I would own. No smile, no welcome, no enthusiasm, blah blah blah.
Reservation meant nothing. The lack of organization at the front end of the restaurant was horrible.. check in and wait. Then when it is your turn they come and whisper your name and don't look for you. Moving on, next. What a poor initial feeling. Dinner was OK. Not excellent, but ok. To see the general manager running through the restaurant with a waiter at his side was comical. He was behind from the start. What a poor excuse fir a supposedly high end restaurant. Roy's, not me again. Been there, done that. $265 for two, uh no. I'll go where my dollars are appreciated. Happy life Roy's.

Birthday dinner didn’t go well. Our waiter ignored us for over half an hour. Drinks were fair, all steaks were served beyond rare when ordered medium. For $65 steak it should be served as ordered with flavor. We needed copious amounts of salt. The mahi mahi was also very disappointing. Small with no flavor. We had high hopes for this place and will never dine here again. There were no apologies for our meals being served wrong and late. Do not eat here.

There is a little bit of a walk from the Marriott lobby. You can also enter the restaurant from the boardwalk. There are about 5 stairs go get into restaurant from the boardwalk. When we left, my husband took my walker down the stairs for me. To the right of the restaurant, you can walk down to a parking lot that is between the Marriott and the Hyatt that is near Sally's restaurant. Our Uber was able to pick us up there. It was a shorter walk than going back to the Marriott lobby.

Awful service experience because of the manager. We arrived at 7pm with a group of nine for a business dinner. Orders were taken by 7:30. We decided not to take appetizers, except for 1. At 8:00pm, some of us were informed that their choice was sold out. At 8:30, the appetizer arrived. At 8:40, I called the waiter to complain about the time everything was taking. A few minutes later the manager comes to ask us how we were doing. « What do you think ? I have been sitting here with my customers for 1h40min and we are still waiting for our first food. » then the guy explained that we needed to accept as this was to make sure we eat all together. Discussion heats up a bit as his tone was very arrogant. eventually he apologised for the situation, saying that the food was coming. Indeed it did, but it took 15min from 1st plate to last plate to be served, simply ridiculous. So it took 2 hours from the moment we entered the restaurant until we we’re all served. Credit to the waiter, he did not count our 1st round of drinks, that saved his tip. he explained that they had also to serve a party upstairs. The food was so and so. My classic four had two fishes too cooked. Bottom line, this was very poorly managed as the staff was completely insufficient to support the demand. But the manager attitude coming at the table was simply unacceptable.

The outdoor bar is pleasant, interior dining room is also acceptable. I was somehow expecting a bit more?
My plate however was quite good. Tiger Prawns with Udon. Very tasty and with a comfort food twist.
It made for a very nice dinner experience with friends.

Only stopped in for a glass of wine and it was an okay experience. The bartenderess was a bit gruff and even though the bar area was empty and the restaurant looked very slow the service was slow.

I went there three times in one week. What does that tell you?
Okay, I give this food 10/10 across the board. The tempura-fried shrimp and mushroom appetizer was addictive like the best popcorn. It was light, flavorful, and with a nice sweet bite. I tried two separate fish entrees this week, both of which were cooked perfectly so the fish was moist, buttery, and went flawlessly with every sauce and side.
My favorite entree was by the rack of lamb though. Unlike a lot of rack of lamb this wasn't super fatty. The meat was cooked exactly how I wanted it, and it had some sort of "shiso mint" flavoring that sounds intense, but it wasn't. And it was mellowed out even more with some silky butternut squash and a lovely, tangy sauce. It was the best rack of lamb I've ever had in any restaurant. Ever. End of story.
Just when you think things can't get any better, may I introduce you to the macadamia nut bread pudding. Talk about paradise in a bite! Soft, buttery, luxurious, toasted coconut flakes and coconut ice cream to really bring out the flavor . . . insert pure-happiness smile here.
Many people who work there are five-star. What helpful, kind, professional, attentive staff. The manager (a younger guy who I believe is named Ben) is responsible for convincing my party to give the restaurant a second try so soon. And the waitresses we had Christina C, Jaclyn E, and Kristen J are all fantastic at their jobs too!
The only flaws of the restaurant are that food doesn't tend to come out hot. While the chefs deserve all the awards for flavor, creativity, and quality; they need to work on the temperature that dishes are when they leave the kitchen. Also, their brunch is misadvertised. 11AM or not, a menu with only lunch and dinner items is not brunch.
But hey, that being said, even at room temp or below, the food was so good and the service was so good, I kept coming back. And I hope to come back again soon. What a great menu concept, team, and overall establishment!

The food, service, and view were all good. The sea bass was great. The pineapple upside down cake was a little disappointing -- the caramelization bordered on burnt. I would go back to this place.

Do not book important dinners here. The restaurant will suddenly cancel reservations if someone decides to book the venue (as they did for me).

New Year’s Eve Pre Fox dinner was excellent! I did miss the usual items that are served such as their sushi. We had the poke appetizer, Butterfish, filet, and finished it off with the Macadamia nut tart and triple chocolate tart. Everything was delicious. I can’t wait to go back and sample the rest of the menu.

I ordered a medium well but instead I was given a rare fillet mignon. The service was disappointing too.

The macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi is the star and be sure to save room for their signature pineapple upside down cake.

Poor service. Seated right away and given menus. After 20 minutes no one even stopped by our table... we left. So disappointing. We were hoping to give our daughter a special birthday dinner there. Menu looked good... too bad we didn't get to try the food.

Great service, Good location for dinner after meeting

We had a reservation at 8:15pm tonight and arrived at 8:00pm for our reservation. There were a lot of open tables, so the host was able to seat us. We received water right away, but after 20 minutes the server has not stopped by our table. One table next to us had received wine in this time and another table seated after us had drinks and appetizers. I told the host that we had not had any server at our table. She said she would let them know we were there. After 5 more minutes with no server at our table and different servers attending to the tables on either side of us, we opted to leave. We chose to have dinner at Roy’s because my son wanted their lava cake for dessert. And we have enjoyed the food there before. But tonight was a big disappointment.

Service was a disaster. Waiter disappeared and had to be called over to take our order after 20 minutes. He then realized we had dinner instead of lunch menus. Had to be called back after another 20 minutes. Just to be told items we wanted on the lunch menu were not available. Food then took another 45 minutes to come out. Manager brought food out with waiter, careful not to make eye contact with us and didn’t say a thing. Great leadership.

They efficiently accommodated all 10 of my guests without any problems, ensuring we didn't have to be split into two tables. Even when we were initially seated outside and it started raining, they quickly arranged a table for us indoors. The food and drinks were delightful, and the service was excellent. We will certainly be returning to Roy's in the future.

Have been to many Roy's locations. To begin, they had a wait for walk-ins, which was fine. I was able to secure a reservation for 10 minutes later via their OpenTable app and was told by the rude host that their app at time glitches and there would be no table available. Another hostess said our name when the reservation time came up and we were promptly seated. So the male host put a bad taste in our mouth to begin with. Our server, appetizer and dessert were great as usual. The Butterfish, which is the star, was small, dry, looked like an end piece and had at least 12 bones in it. The server showed all the bones to management and it was taken off our bill thankfully, but that fish should have never come out of the kitchen. Probably the worst entree experience we have ever had. But again, we were glad management also agreed the fish was unacceptable.

The food quality was underwhelming, and the service left something to be desired. During our lunch meeting with a group of twelve, we noticed the absence of attentive service for drink refills. For a high-end dining experience, especially when the restaurant isn't crowded, one would expect dedicated staff ensuring that all table needs are promptly met.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE; My Wife & I made Reservations for 5:30PM to Dine Inside for my 70th Birthday. We should have Realized something was wrong straight away; We had to to walk more than a half mile to get to the restaurant from the Marriot Hotel Parking Garage. There were very few signs to guide us. Finally inside the restaurant, there was No Direction to the Hostess. There was obvious signs of construction going on inside the restaurant. The Manager, Ben Anderson was re-building a table next to the Hostess stand with a loud electric Drill Screwdriver. WE SHOULD HAVE LEFT!!! After being seated, we ordered my Wife’s Filet Mignon and I chose the Ribeye both Medium Rare. Because of Food Allergies I SPECIFICALLY Ordered Steak & Potatoes only! I did ask for some Cheese and Butter on my Potatoes. What I Got was some unknown garnish on my Potatoes and Leeks ON TOP of my Steak! Who does that? Put a Vegetable over the top of a $65 Steak? Did they have A-1 Sauce? No they DID NOT!!! Both of our Steaks were brought to the table COLD! I sent it bake for a re-heat. Then I realized that the CocaCola they had brought was served in a pre-Iced Glass that must certainly have been half melted water. What Barman doesn’t check the glass before he serves the drink. Throughout our Disarrayed Chaotic Dinner, Mr. Anderson was barking Orders to the people helping re-construct the tables so Loudly that I had to take out my Hearing Aids! He was literally ALL THAT I COULD HEAR!!! To the Managers credit, after hearing my complaint in Person, He did Reduce our Bill. But as I told him, the Chaos of conducting
Construction Work during the Evening Dinner Rush ABSOLUTELY RUINED my Birthday Celebration!!! No wonder that Palm Springs Location No Longer Exists. BAD MANAGEMENT!!! I WILL NEVER RETURN TO ROY’S RESTAURANT.

Roy's restaurant is a high end place that's great for gatherings. It is, however limited in the way of vegan options. I had one option for an appetizer and one option for a meal. They do have a hidden vegetarian menu (most with dairy included). The grilled vegetable "dinner" was not very hearty or flavorful, despite the basalmic glaze. It included a whole 1/4 onion, bell peppers, broccoli and the top of one portobello mushroom.

Local eating at Roy’s for the first time. The service was ok, seems like they were understaffed but that’s seems to be the norm for many restaurants lately. The food was Ok- no WOW factor. Would I come back, probably not. Our bill was high for just three of us and the food wasn’t worth the price due to taste.

I like Roy's better on island. The two bartenders outside were obviously new. One of them was acting like a kid (talk and banter felt like I was talking to a stoned teenager). It's been good in the past but I think there's just some newbies.

Came here for my son's 6th birthday dinner, he was so excited to go. We told the waitress and also notified the restaurant when we booked the reservation. The waitress recommended we order dessert ahead of time as the lava cake takes awhile to bake. My son was still eating his steak, my husband was in the restroom and the waitress brought out his dessert with a candle. I explained my son was still eating and my husband was in the restroom. She said "well it's done and just sitting up there, here's a lighter so just light the candle when you're ready" I was shocked. The food was mediocre. The only good thing was the view. We will never be back

I have no idea how this tourist trap has more than 1 star. I went here with two friends who like high end restaurants and good food. I ordered the fish of the day (pecan crusted) and it was undercook. The veggies were good but not impressive. The coconut mojito had a “delicious” ice and sugar flavor. For the price you pay, I would think they check the food quality more closely.

I had a great dinner with my family here. This upscale Hawaiian style restaurant does an excellent job with their fish. I had the “Butterfish” which was some of the best fish I had ever had. To begin, it was a really good cut of fish, that was then cooked to a perfect temperature, and the sauce was simple yet absolutely stellar addition. Also on my plate were some veggies and rice. I ate the rice last and used it to soak up the remaining fish sauce. For dessert, we had the chocolate soufflé and the pineapple upside cake. Both were rich with delicious flavors, but the pineapple upside cake achieved a texture so amazing that my words can’t do it justice. The cake had a caramelized pineapple and coconut top that was chewy and delicious. Aside from the food, the service was great. Our waitress, Lauren, was very attentive and friendly. At one point we had ordered an appetizer that took a while to arrive due to a food runner’s error, so she removed it from the bill even though we didn’t complain. I really appreciated the gesture. Overall, it’s a great place— provided your wallet is ready!

I hope this is a mix up but I bought a gift card there for $175 for someone very dear to me in my life and they went to use the card and the establishment said it had already been used. Please expect my call tomorrow to rectify and I hope make right. I paid by debit card last summer and have proof. I want to know when it was used.
I have loved Roy’s and have gone many years to the Hawaii location, Los Angeles and my hometown San Diego location for work parties, with family and friends per my suggestion and always get the butter fish and chocolate soufflé. This is my first experience back post Covid, but even after my good experiences, the person who I bought the certificate for getting denied who lives in North County is a reason I would never return if not rectified after proof is shown it was not used by myself or the recipient of the gift card. This is unacceptable. I know people do make mistakes and can and plan to be very understanding but in business it is crucial to rectify to keep business. Also for you to know in case happening more than me. I am a local. My friend and colleague who was the recipient is also local who drove down from Encinitas and even felt bad for telling me, but I am so glad she did. What if people do not speak up and you lose a lot of business; I hope this is not a scam within the company banking on people not catching. Thank you for caring (I hope). I really want to continue being a patron as I do love the food but service also matters a lot to me and how when things go wrong are handled. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Please expect my call tomorrow.

Some of the worst service I’ve ever had.
I went to Roy’s on 7/22. When we sat down the waiter said it was about a 45 minute wait on entrees and 25 minutes on appetizers. That was understandable given that it was a busy night with Comic Com in the area. Waiting for food was fine for me as it was a good atmosphere. What wasn’t fine was the service or lack thereof. Our waiter took our order and that was it. While waiting for our food, I would have loved a second drink. Unfortunately, our waiter never came to check on our party. My drink sat empty for 45 minutes as did my brother’s. Our waiter didn’t bring out our food. Once our food did arrive, our waiter never once came to check on us to make sure our food was ok. I saw our waiter more often when it came to giving us and taking our check than I did throughout the entirety of the meal. Again, slow service is ok. No service is not. Very rarely do I not tip. This was one of those occasions. No service. No tip. I was very close to complaining with management about our experience as I sat for 20 minutes waiting for our check. For the prices, you would expect much better.
