Enduring Japanese eatery & sushi bar infusing classic dishes with international flavors.
If you're visiting Sacramento, and you can go to one restaurant, this is it.
Kru has been the crown jewel of Central Valley sushi for years, and after multiple visits they never fail to impress. The quality is absolutely superb on all levels, from the staff to the decor to the wildly fresh ingredients and the magic that they work with them.
The restaurant is nicely designed, with calm wood-tone interiors that give off the vibe of an izakaya. The table spacing is balanced to make the place seem lively without feeling crowded.
The rotating seasonal menus guarantee that you can try something new and exciting every time you manage to snag a table (and if you're a frequent flyer, the Sashimi Tapas will always keep you guessing). They have a finely-stocked bar with inventive and delicious drinks with a fun seasonal theme. The quality of the nigiri and sashimi is amazing; I have never had a bite that I didn't want more of.
The staff is top notch, both in the front and back of house. The wait staff is courteous and knowledgeable, and keeps a log of your experience to better cater to your tastes on future visits. The open kitchen lets you watch the kitchen staff show their skills, but watch out; when you see them work, they make it look so good you'll want to order until you drop.
If you need any more convincing, just look at the photos. Kru is one of Sacramento's finest crown jewels when it comes to an amazing food experience.

Very friendly staff, though my server seemed a bit pushy/trying to rush me to order more food… she could be new… and that was the one aspect I didn’t like. The sushi chef was super nice, Jon’s the man!! And overall great ambience… the food was very fresh, some have said it’s the best sushi in the us… it’s not that, it is very good and a spot that everyone should check out.. also loved the milk bun on the burger and also very flavorful though the burger fell apart and it was quite messy to eat… the grilled oyster was outstanding and agreed as a must order. I really liked the rainbow roll, which while being simple also tasted great especially the crab part. Sushi fish was tasty and fresh, seemed like a spot I should definitely check out again sometime soon.

This was my first time visiting this wonderful establishment and it most certainly won’t be the last. First and foremost, I do recommend you make a reservation as this restaurant is deservedly busy for dinner. Once seated, an attentive waiter/waitress guides you through the menu if needed. They make helpful recommendations on specials and other menu items as well as offer the drink menu if you’re feeling so inclined.
Throughout the meal, waiters and waitresses will check on you, fill your water, and clear empty plates from your space. It was a fabulous experience. I could not have asked any more from my waitress during this visit.
The atmosphere in this place is simple yet unique. Laughter and good energy fill the air as people come with friends, family, and loved ones to enjoy this awesome space. If you sit at the sushi bar (which would be to the right of the entrance in the main dining room), pay attention to the detail oriented sushi chefs work their art. It certainly does complete the wonder of Kru. Enjoy!!!

Pretty big restaurant with fancy design incorporating a lot of exquisite wood pieces. Fantastic service. We really liked the sushi rolls, though I felt there was a limited variety. Miso had little too much mushroom taste for me. Overall it was fantastic and I would come back again

Absolutely delicious sushi place. Shout out to Professor Wes - aka the Weston - aka team Rez - for introducing this place. Sushi fresh as heck, love the fermented wasabi. Best flavored oysters forgot what they’re called on the menu. Your gal will be impressed with this place as a date night pick.

This upscale establishment is one of the finer Japanese restaurants you will find in Sacramento or even much of California.
While the prices certainly reflect the quality, after you have had some of the delicious menu items you will agree that even as a rare treat this place is well worth the effort.
Some highlights include authentic Wagyu Beef that will melt in your mouth, sushi that's both fresh and tasty, and one of the only places around that is serving actual wasabi (if you've only seen the neon green paste before then you're in for a treat!).
Do yourself a favor and stop by sometime (a reservation wouldn't hurt as it can get crowded). The price might hurt a little but the memory will last much longer.

We did takeout and everything was still beautifully presented which rarely happens elsewhere. Totally worth trying here as the fish tasted fresh and the attention to details were spot on. Parking can be very rough since the parking lot is small and shares with Obo but there is a parking lot across the street.

Right off the bat, my sister shared with our waitress that I have a sensitivity to gluten. When she was going over the menu with us, our server mentioned that she could make the proper substitutions to make my choices gluten free. So when the roll showed up with little crunchy tempura things all over it, I assumed (silly me) because she had been so clear about the substitutions that this must be gluten free!!! Fast forward an hour and I was already experiencing discomfort. I paid $90 for this meal only for it to make me sick. Thank you, Kru.

Place was poppin’ on Friday night, decor was vibrant and modern! We ordered the Tesla Roll, Sashimi Tapas, Chirashi, Seven Spice Crusted Tuna. The fish on the Seven Spice Crusted Tuna tasted unfresh and bland, the spices didn’t really work. The Sashimi Tapas were similar to the Chirashi so it was like eating the same thing twice, nothing special about the way the fish was prepared in the Tapas plate. They had some type of fried fish included on the Sashimi Tapas plate, which is NOT sashimi, kind of deceptive. The soft shell crab was way overcoooked to a degree of being burnt in the Tesla roll, overall a very bland roll. The sauce on the Tesla roll tasted like ranch sauce, which is pretty disgusting.
The Chirashi plate was decent, fish was fresh, probably the only good thing we enjoyed. This place is definitely overhyped and overrated for price you pay.
If you want good sushi, try Chef Franks, that place blows this place away, hands down.

The food was absolutely fantastic. The service was crap. They had put an item on our bill that we didn't order. When my nephew brought it to their attention. They treated us like we ordered it & was trying to get it for free. No apology for their mistake. I called them GM the following day to complain. I had to beg for a gift card. We spent over 150.00, and they sent a 50.00 gift card smdh.

Kru was quite a delightful experience from the time we were seated. Raef provided exceptional service and is everything you hope for at this type of establishment. He was attentive, provided recommendations upon request, and gave us space to enjoy our meal at our pace.
As far as our meal, I started with the celery root soup with beet chips and sautéed mushrooms; this was a hit from conception through execution. The soup additions were well prepared and expertly composed to deliver a delicious medley of root vegetables with a velvety mouthfeel. I shutter to think about what Japanese chef's think of a gochujang glazed chicken. This is the case with the "karaage", which was tasty even if not traditional. My main course was the chef's choice nigiri. All of the fish were flavorful and provided the correct amount of condiment in the appropriate places at the correct time. Shiro maguro, yellowtail, and escolar, highlights. Finally we finished with a matcha tiramisu with a pomegranate marmalade. Not overly sweet, unique dish, definitely a win.
In all, I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting town. We did not drink tonight but the cocktails seemed to be worth a try. This experience is what you hope for when you take the time to make plans and spend your money at a dining establishments.

We went to Kru to celebrate our 43rd anniversary. On being seated our waiter asked if we were there to celebrate anything. We told him our anniversary. He brought two flutes of champagne (1/2s). My son ordered a whiskey. The food was delicious. The whiskey was the most meager pour I've ever seen. When the tab came there was a $5 charge for the champagne we hadn't ordered. It's an expensive restaurant. Sad to cheap out on the whiskey and champagne.

This is the best Japanese food in Sacramento, hands down. Upscale but semi-casual Japanese dining. Duck dumplings, lobster tempura, sushi rolls, hand rolls, pork belly, fried brussel sprouts, bone marrow butter... All were to die for. Everything is delicious and there's something for everyone. Very clean. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. More expensive than other Asian food in Sac, but you get what you pay for. I love this place. And their sauces. And the chopsticks. Perfection on a plate. Make a reservation!

Easily some of the best, highest quality sushi I’ve had outside of the PNW. This spot is absolutely spectacular. Their nigiri selection is top tier, the hand rolls are stuff with fish, and I honestly didn’t try a single bite of food I didn’t love.
I am blown away with how fair the price is, and the level of care in each detail of the restaurant. Sacramento is lucky to have Kru, this competes with the very high end sushi I’ve tried in Sf, and it is a way better deal.
I tried the spicy salmon, spicy tuna, and hamachi hand rolls and I can say it was the best handroll I’ve ever had. The bluefin and kind salmon nigiris were so fresh, and the spicy liz role was delicious. I legit would come from the city to here just for Kru.
The staff is also very informative, fun, easy to speak with and engaging. Push this spot to the top of your list wether you’re a local or visiting, it’s the real deal.

This is only based on my experience. I wouldn't recommend or come here again even if it was free.
Cons:
Service: The earliest reservation is 9pm and they close at 10. Got there 5 minutes early and still couldn't get a table until 9:11. Couldn't order til 9:21 because the server didn't check in. We had 3 different "servers" stop by our table so I'm not sure who we're actually supposed to flag down.
Food: I ordered the chiraishi. A female server served it and went over the types of fish but I honestly couldn't hear her clearly through her face mask. A few pieces were fishy. They had too many garnishments next to each other. Like seaweed, wasabi, ginger, fried onion, shredded onion.. The rice was under the fish and they had this idea to another it in sesame oil. I love sesame oil but I wasn't expecting that on the sushi rice and it made picking up the rice impossible. They had a few sauces already on the fish. The fish that had the orange sauce tasted like vomit. With the sauce and the slimy, fishy fish, it actually made me throw up a little. I was on a date so I forced it down with water. I should've just spit it out. It's the next day, and I'm paying for it.
Overall, I had a horrendous experience. I don't think you should come here for a special occasion. If you just want nice drinks, I suppose you could just enjoy the bar. If you're wondering why I didn't bring it up with the server, it's because it was so bad that there is nothing they can do to have me come here again.

The food is 5/5, but we didn’t expect to sit there waiting for 30 minutes before we can order, or wait for 45 minutes to get the first part of our order (even then without having any water!!!). We had a reservation, and the restaurant was not as busy! I don’t want to blame the waiter because it seemed like this was more of a management issue!
We were there for around 2 hours! Imagine ordering sake, and they bring it after the food saying sorry we forgot, while you have been trying to find your waiter and they don’t show up at your table at all!
Anyways! Great food, but disappointing service!

My only complaint is the price for the food. It's too expensive for small portions with mediocre flavor. I'm literally the kind of guy that have paid (multiple times) 10-15$ for two bites of wagyu because it's delicious so money is not an issue.
Besides that, service is great. Employees have been very accommodating and friendly in my two visits. Ambiance is nice. Everything is clean as far as I've seen. Sake is pretty good.
I'm a huge fan of sashimi and have yet to try it here. Hopefully, it'll be good enough for me to want to bump up the food score.

Took wife out for her 30th birthday, service was fantastic. We were looking for a creative/fun/great quality type restaurant and this restaurant fit the bill. It took us a while to finally snag a reservation we could make, but it was worth the effort. They bring everything out in an orderly and well paced fashion.
Food wise, our favorite nigiri was the wagyu and hotate. The cocktails were fun and delicious, but the beer was even better. The Onibi draft beer they have is smooth as hell, arguably smoother than a cold Asahi? So I would really recommend to drink while you’re there as I think the menu is well connected, in the sense that everything pairs nicely with each other. Our main dishes, we got the burger and grilled hamachi kama, absolute fire, especially with the Onibi beer 🔥
Vibe, super chill. I don’t wanna hype this place up too much, you just gotta experience it for yourself.

The food as always was amazing, service was a bit lacking, Hostest acknowledged or reservation then informed us "that just means you get a table, but we will seat you whenever" it was just rude, Waiter came thru waiting / seating area and offered drink we ordered, never seen them till 10mins after making it to our table for a total of 23min to get a drinks, 3 people tried to take out drink orders ar the table and it to over 10min. for my sons to get a coke and lemonade, ordered 2 appetizers, 5 rolls, chowder, streak, & duck dumplings, First to the table was the dumplings ( sent back as no other food was out and this was my wifes main), then 1 app, the 7 min later another app, and chowder( popcorn in chowder was old and stale and horribly soggy when chowder was added) , ordered 2 more mixed drinks and a coke for son, 17min on mixed drink coke never came, all rolls came out separately and very randomly, al this point apps are gone, all rolls and chowder gone, waited in steak and dumplings that had been previously served, took 20min... The server was almost as confused as us, still waiting in my sons second coke... Mind you this was at 5:30pm on a Friday and a 18th Birthday Celebration, not one mention of a Happy Birthday or Anything, when waiter brought the check he said heard us talking about going somewhere else for Birthday Cake, whit check in hand he say " oh yeah it's someone's birthday want a cupcake or something? oh did you guys want dessert menus?? No normally that's ask before you bring the check!!! We just go somewhere else for dessert...Only Saving Grace was the food!!!

While they book out months in advance we were lucky to get a last minute cancellation for a Sunday dinner. Also, don't sleep on the burger. An upscale sushi restaurant that is ahead of the game. Started with the warm mushroom salad. Always yummy . The dressing on this is light & earthy. Dressed perfectly. The staff here are amazing and very knowledgeable about everything on the menu & will answer all your questions about anything they serve. We also had a seared sturgeon , king salmon & salmon belly nigiri all very tasty. The king salmon was our fave of the 3. We shared the sunshine roll which was outstanding. Best roll I have had in a minute. My husband enjoyed the house old fashioned. This bar has an amazing collection of Japanese whiskey & sake. They have craft cocktails & non alcoholic cocktails as well. Hard to get a reservation but dining in the bar is just as nice. Pricey but worth every dime. Treat yourself.

One of the best places to eat in sac! Get reservations a few weeks ahead, but sometimes you can get lucky if people cancel. Great vibe, good drinks, amazing food for a decent price. Would be 1.5x more in LA. Get the drink with sesame oil - that’s the best one. The lighter drink from my photos! Everything is good. Can’t remember off the top of my head what we got or liked most

We were taken care of from the moment we entered the restaurant to the second we left our table. What a wonderful experience and fantastic service! We ordered many items on the menu and all of them got a collective rating of no less than ‘omg this is so good’! We especially loved the warm mushroom salad, the dumpling filled with scallops, and the wagyu stick. The sushi rolls were absolutely fabulous as well, especially the King roll. Now, while our party or 3 was completely stuffed by the time it was appropriate to order desserts, we got the panna cotta, the chocolate torte and the spice cake came on the house. The panna cotta with tempura strawberries is TO DIE FOR! Thanks so much!!!

Truly the best sushi experience in Sacramento and don't get me started on the incredibly imaginative drinks.

I have dined in here multiple times, each time was an extraordinarily unique experienced compared to other sushi bars and restaurants. The service is great here and cater to any needs you may have. Besides typical Japanese dishes you will find more exotic ones but excellence in flavor is still there. Everything is served on beautiful works of art you'll never see used as a dish anywhere else that binds with the food it's presented with to create a pleasing first impression when your waiting brings it to you. Over the many times I've dined here I have ordered the sunshine roll, nigiri mix, miso soup, seared sturgeon, ngo burger, and wagyu tsukune, all I very much recommend, but if you want something unique settle for the wagyu tsukune.

Fantastic restaurant for a contemporary sushi experience. Brita really took care of us and explained the menu very thoroughly. She really explains the differences between the different dishes and she was overall one of the best servers we've ever had. Really recommend the sake flight to get things started and they definitely didn't cheap out on the nigiri sushi mix. Different from an authentic sushi restaurant, but definitely not worse. It's unique in its own way and we'd definitely love to come back again. The duck dumping is a MUST finisher. You won't regret it.

Waiting area is cramped and small, my wife was offended within 5 minutes by the front of the house as we got shuffled around. We waited 10 minutes for our reservation, and they sell out the bar space so don't plan on getting a drink early and waiting.
Like typical Sacramento establishments the food is not the main focus. Sushi was on par with most other restaurants. The presentation is better and the garnishments are the highlight. If you don't like pickled garnishments and sauce this isn't the spot. Rolls are all good but very similar other than a slice apple, a sauce or slight variation. Fish is fresh but I wouldn't put it higher than other upscale establishments.
What makes this not up scale is the table service. At this price range they should be clearing plates before dishes come out. Providing better drink service, water service is great but we want drinks. Just felt like another chain restaurant, which is the biggest draw back.
Lastly as the sober driver I am deeply disappointed in the beverage options. All I want is something other than water that is caffeine free. Nothing on the beverage menu but glass bottle cokes, no diet soda, no mocktail and the waitress glazed over me when I wanted something caffeine free at 8pm at night.

This place is *outstanding*. I’ve traveled extensively and I don’t know that I’ve been to another sushi restaurant in the USA that has this quality and variety of fish, coupled with this level of execution and also with friendly and prompt service. I’ll be going every time I’m in Sacramento. Honestly I won’t be going anywhere else when I’m in Sacramento lol. Wow. Just wow.

This is "our spot" for my wife and I. Celebrated many things at Kru. She LOVES sushi, but I don't. Kru has something for everyone!!
The Wagyu is terrific..always on point. The burger is good too, but I order medium rare, and it usually comes medium well. Oh well, I need to stop being so freakin white and not order the burger at the japanese restaurant!!
Seriously though, amazing food, top-notch service, and an astounding bar program!

5 stars On everything. I ordered the Asparagus soup, a duck skewer appetizer, and the Tesla. All seasoned well. Flavors were outstanding. I wouldn't even call this place pricey. It's not cheap, but you definitely pay for what you get. Top Ten restaurants I've been to. I'll be back.

Pricey. Worth every penny.
At some point I stopped taking pictures because I was so focused on savoring the nigiri I was eating. Sat at the sushi bar, watched it prepared by expert hands and described to me as it was handed over. Fish was exquisite, fresh, melt in your mouth good. Great selection including a lot of options I haven’t had since I was in Japan.
If you’re a sushi snob, this is the place for you. Will definitely visit again the next time I’m in Sac.

Delicious food, we ordered several dishes, sushi and dessert and each single item was really tasty.
The waitress was trying to oversell a bit, but I'll let it pass because the food was among the best I've had in Sacramento

This place is beautiful inside and has some very nice employees. Everyone greeted us and our server was amazing. The food cam out quick and he made sure my kids were satisfied. Every plate was packed with flavor. I did not like that me and the kids were sat in the bar area with tall seats. We got what we thought was kobe tar tar. And it was cooked and over cooked at that. The taste was there but the meat was a bit dry. The same thing with the chicken Katsu. It tasted like it was made in old oil and was extremely dry for being chicken thighs. Over all the experience was good and the food tasted great.

Exquisite sushi! The beet salad was not only plated elegantly, but the flavors were so masterly put together. The dining experience here is phenomenal. the sashimi we had was another beautiful presentation and throughly delicious. Great fun..thanks everyone.

Great food and drinks, a little expensive and some portions are very small, but everything is artfully presented and well done!
Update: Food and drinks are still great!

Let's begin with the service. Absolutely wonderful staff, extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. The staff moved around the tables in a very non disturbing way. My water glass was.never half empty. The minite I felt I needed something, a staff member was there to provide without even asking. The atmosphere was wonderful in that it was just enough light to create a romantic setting while also extremely quiet.
The food, i mean the sushi melted the minute you bite into it.
It is absolutely worth the visit.

Ordered delivery from here last night. Some of the fish and the crab fill tasted a little off, but didn't think anything of it. Now I'm in hour three of being sick from both ends.
This is the first time in more than a decade of living in Sacramento that any sushi has made me sick. Ordered the rainbow roll and california roll and caterpillar (thought I'd have leftovers for breakfast, lol), and that's all I had to eat yesterday so there's no way it was anything else. I don't know if they actually prepare the delivery meals at Kru—there are reports they use a ghost kitchen. Anyway, don't order delivery. Absolutely miserable.
