We have had several less than adequate experiences with Tokyo Garden. Our most recent experience guaranteed we will never patronize this business again. We called in an order at 4:30 requesting to pick it up at 6:00. We showed up at 6:05 and were told the order wasn't ready. When I asked how long the server went to the sushi counter to talk to one of the guys there. My perspective based on how the conversation looked wasn't "Oh our bad, we'll prioritize that order and get it out asap" it looked more like *shrug* "It's not started tell them to wait." The server returned to us and said "I'm angry for you." To which I replied "It isn't even started yet?" And she said no. At that point I told them to cancel the order. Poor customer service for overpriced sushi that is just mediocre.

We've been to Tokyo Garden many times over the years...after not going for a while we recently stopped for lunch on a Saturday. The inside looked like it had some new touches, and it was very clean. We were greeted and seated quickly, and the service was very good during our visit. Everything we had was fresh and so good! Could have been the best food and best experience we'd had in all the times we'd been there! If you've never been, I would suggest you try it...good bento boxes, good sushi options...and if you're a local but it's been a while, it's worth giving it another try!

Where do I start- so just with this specific visit; My fiance got our food, which was subpar and I knew it from the first bite I had of the zigzag roll which was covered in a blob of cream cheese (gross!) At that exact moment he started gagging and pulled out this long hair!!! Which thank god it was him and not me because I would have puked! I looked close at the picture and there were 2 or more hairs! We’ve had issues everytime this one chef isn’t working. The chef Will they have is the only reason we go back. Because when it’s good it’s great! The manager was unprofessional and extremely unprofessional, she sounded young and inexperienced. Which me and my family have been constumers since I was little they stopped eating when it went under different management! I guess I should’ve followed suit! My fiancés had food positioning around the time they found a dead rat in the kitchen a couple years ago- I believe it went again, under new management! At this point I’m going to have to venture out and find a new place to eat! Because it’s just unacceptable - so enjoy at your own risk. But everything said here is 100% truth and nothing but.

Went here for lunch and had a horrible server, didn’t catch her name but she was older and blonde haired. She looked like she hated her job. Completely miserable and wasn’t personable at all. The sushi was okay, not great. Really bothers me when you get a spicy tuna roll and all they do is do drops of sriracha on it

Sat down, guy brings my water and I asked for beer, guy says "I'm not your server." and walks away.
I ask for imitation crab nigiri for my son - he's allergic to real crab. cook refuses, even tho they put it in the Cali roll.
Miso soup comes - tastes awful, is made with chicken consome, not dashi.
Teriyaki chicken comes - thick, drppy sauce tastes like candy - horrible.

I read a few reviews that made me nervous to try this place, but I am so glad I ignored them. We had a lovely dinner here. Not only was the food delicious, the pricing was great! The host was welcoming and friendly. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. She gave us great recommendations. Overall a very pleasant place. We will certainly come back next time we’re in town. We ordered Tuna Poke appetizer, Redding Summer, and Red Blossom. Pictured.
(Appetizer was served more nicely, we had a couple bites before remembering to take pics lol)

I'm very disappointed this time. My sushi was bagged together with the hot food which made it warm and didn't taste good. I recommend when ordering takeout make sure you tell them to separate the cold food from the hot food. My rainbow roll and seaweed salad where not editable even after putting them into the fridg to get them to be cold again it just changed the flavor.

Okay. I have visited Tokyo Garden on several occasions, and order to go every so often. Today, I called at 11 and placed a to go order. I was advised it would be ready is about "20ish" minutes. I drive over. Arrive a couple minutes early, to settle up the tab. It's 11:18. The server checks on my order and let's me know it's being worked on and should be up shortly. I get impatient at 11:37. Another server approaches, as I am standing at the entrance counter. I advise her I am waiting for my food. She goes back to check and I watch as they pick upy bagged order and bring it to me. I inquire if it's customary for them to not prepare the food until I arrive, as I have waited 20 minutes longer than I was advised. I get a brush off response of, "I'm sorry, something must have happened in the kitchen". No offer of it shouldn't have happened or anything. This is the second time! Last time I ordered to go, very same thing occurred. I am not so sure ordering to go here is something they want to do. Food is good. Unfortunately, I likely won't be ordering from here any time soon.

Ordered the unagi roll, very disappointed in it, very little eel in it, and there was crab in it which was not on roll ingredients in the menu.. this the first time having it and will not order it again. The rest of my food was great. Rainbow roll, unagi hand rolls were very good. However I will definitely go back there soon. Hopefully you will enjoy the food there.

I had a rather disappointing experience with this restaurant yesterday. I ordered the Tonkatsu, which according to their menu is "tender pork steak breaded and deep fried." What arrived was anything but deep fried or crispy. The meat and breading were soggy and mushy. I let the waitress know that my meal was good and instead of asking what was wrong or how they could make it better, she offered me a to go box. Why would I want to take home my meal that I had just informed her was any good. I thought perhaps she might take the meal off the bill or at least offer me something else or even perhaps a discount. NOPE! If you're in the mood for Japanese cuisine my strong suggestion is to look elsewhere. Redding has more than one choice for Japanese food--trust me, visit this establishments over this one.

It was so cold inside,that we asked to be seated in the back thinking it might be warmer. My husband looked at the wall thermostat. It was 64°. We asked if the heat could be turned up, which did not happen. We also had to wait 45 minutes for our food and we were the first patrons of the day.

We ordered the tea and it was absolutely disgusting. My mom said after we told them this she did dump all the teas which is great. However they shouldn't have let it get that bad. First let me say that for the last 25+ year my family and I have always enjoyed Tokyo Gardens. It is the one place that we always look forward to, but today we stopped in about 3 and ordered 2 apps, a bento box, 2 specialty roll, a kids meal, and 3 other rolls. My wife ordered a diet soda and when it came she asked for some lemon for it. After about 10 minutes again we asked for the lemon and was told by the waiter she would go get it that, they where cutting them. About 10 minutes later she brought our seaweed salad and calamari fries apps. The salad was great but the calamari fries were rings and were so over cooked they were like chewing on rubber bands. When she brought some small plates for the apps, we asked again for the lemons we were told they didn't have any after waiting for 30 minutes or more for them. After another 10 minutes I received my bento box, I grabbed a piece of tempura green bean it was room temp and soggy. The waiter then brought the kids meal and I asked her if I could get some fresh tempura that mine was cold and soggy. She told me she would have them refry them for me, I said that they would probably be way over cooked if they just refried the old ones. She said OK, but when they were returned they were way over cooked and the rest of the food was room temp along with a somewhat warm and wilted salad. The kids meal sesame chicken tasted like a tin can or a metallic taste which we returned having only eaten one goyza. After a few more minutes my child received there 2 specialty rolls which were very good and then got our cal roll and two deep fried chicken rolls that were made with the chicken not deep fried but the hold rolls were tempuraed. Which was just a mistake but still took 15 to 20 minutes to remake. The whole time we were there no dirty dishes were removed from our table, I had to keep setting them on the table next us just so we would have room food which probably wasn't necessary since other then the apps we never all had food at the same time. When we got our ticket we were charged for the sesame chicken which we had returned because it didn't taste good. My wife asked for her soda togo and received a small empty cup that wouldn't even hold what was left in her cup.
I was in the restaurant industry for 20 plus years and know that sometimes your short handed and things don't go as planed but there was 3 waiters, at least one busser, 2 sushi chefs and at least one person in the kitchen. When we got there they were not allowing tables other then in the first dinning room and only sat people in that room the whole time we were there. Generally when we're there we see and walk to the owner Peter, but didn't see him there this time. I just hope he is doing ok!

We absolutely love Tokyo Garden, the food is fabulous.We live an hour north so when we do come to Redding sushi from Tokyo Garden is a must. Today's visit was extra special because it is my birthday. We went and got our order and noticed right before leaving they made a mistake with our sashimi, when letting them know of the mistake they very sweetly and graciously corrected the mistake and let us keep the other food. That was so special and sweet and we appreciated it so much. I also wanted to point out how extremely sweet the staff always is. Victoria and Kaylee went above and beyond. If you have not been, we highly recommend you do. 👌 ♥️!!!!

I was really hoping this place was good. I wanted to see for myself and I was so disappointed. I've been told I have simple taste, I'm not picky at all. However this was not it. I had the shrimp tempura sushi, tempura veggie mix and a tonkatsu ramen bowl. The sushi was not good, didn't taste fresh at all, or had much taste tbh. Also the tempura veggies had no flavor whatsoever and there was a fry in it, that was funny. The ramen was worst of all, the pork low quality, smelled really weird, and it's the first time I can't eat the egg! I was so sad because I love the egg that comes with authentic Ramen. Not authentic at all. Staff was cool. Environment was really nice. First and last time for me. 😭🥺

I'm not really sure what all the hype is about, but good for them keeping busy. I ordered take out hours prior to picking it up. It was not ready when I arrived at the time I requested. The building was extremely crowded so I ended up having to wait 20 minutes outside in the cold. I then had to go back in and push past the crowd to get my food because no one could bring it out. The woman at the front was also rude and refused to acknowledge my husband and I. When we got home, the food was wrong, chicken instead of beef. The food was also flavorless. We only came here to get rid of a gift card. We won't be back.

Ordered 6 sushi rolls and a rice bowl. The waitress told us the sushi was done but not my rice bowl, and do I want to wait for everything all at once or can she bring the rolls out. I said it was fine to bring them, no biggie. My family got their rolls, ate them and we were still waiting. AFTER they were done she came over and told us my bowl never printed and do I want them to start making it. I said no but can I get a California roll to go. We waited almost an hour for ONE ROLL TO GO. Absolutely no communication from the waitress about why it was taking so long, no offer for drink refills, NOTHING. I could see her staring at me from across the room because she knew it was taking a long time, but never made an effort to even assure us it was eventually coming out. I would have been fine with the wait, it wasn't her fault and I wasn't in a hurry. But the service was the worst I've ever received anywhere. On top of everything they still charged us for it all. I don't expect anything for free but like $5 off or some sort of acknowledgement of the situation would have been cool. I've been here dozens of times, but this was by far the worst experience I've ever had with service anywhere. I will never go back.

While the prices have gone up, the food here always tastes delicious and has been a staple of growing up in Redding. Staff is always friendly, it never takes too long to get food even when extremely busy, and while I do miss less than 10 dollar lunch plates, I feel this is still a great option for easy-order bento boxes.

Hello, friends. You must be reading this because, like so many of us, you enjoy sushi (i.e. fish candy). If you enjoy businesses that are primarily run by teenagers, this might appeal to you! If you also like waiting 50+ minutes for your mediocre food to arrive on a rather slow holiday, then by all means, have at it.

Immediately on arrival, we were informed that the wait for sushi was "um like an hour. Wait- I'm not sure- let me go check". *5 minutes later* "okay it's like 45 minutes". We were really hungry so we decided to get gyoza and edamame while waiting. We proceeded to receive sake that was way too hot, the wrong beer, and watched the couple seated 15 minutes after us completely finish their... gyoza and edamame. Huh. At least it only took 40 minutes to get our appetizers. As entertainment we watched the teenagers who were running the place standing around chatting and looking around in a haughty, blazé sort of way that a cat might watch someone eating a tv dinner alone: detached and judging. Finally, 50 minutes after we ordered, the rolls came. The more expensive rolls were tasty, but nothing special. The cheap roll was inedible.

Look, it's a strip mall sushi place. We never expect too much. But the staff always seems to get worse when there's no adult to manage them; the food takes longer each time; and the bill seems to get higher. We decided not to go here again and you should too. We will stick with Coco's from now on.

Overall my experience was great, Angelina's service was quick and efficient. I ordered a Chicken Teriyaki dinner with a side of California rolls. The Teriyaki dinner stayed hot throughout the entire meal due to the cast iron plate it's served on (it's wonderful when every bite is still as hot as the first), and the rolls were packed just right (the right amount of filling and rice in each roll creates a satisfying balance of flavors and textures). I could absolutely see myself coming back.

I’ve been in here multiple times and don’t see anything wrong with the restaurant, the location is nice and the staff is friendly for the most part. However upon my first time using the online ordering I was told to select a time to pick up my order, I place my order in the time that would work for me and as I’m driving to the location not 5 minutes from my scheduled pick up I get a call saying that they had hour wait for their sushi line to get my order done??? I wouldn’t have minded this if I was informed when buying online that it could take as much as an hour extra for my order to be prepared varying on time of day. But no, here I am having to call my credit card company and let them know that I could not even receive said food I had paid for as this restaurant refuses to update their website since the 2000’s. Overall great right :)

Saw the reviews and decided to order some food for my daughter. Went in and ordered takeout.

35 mins after patiently waiting and seeing other patrons getting their food, I canceled my order and left.

Was very early on a sat later afternoon. Place was NOT busy and was fully staffed.

No apology no friendliness. I guess they decided they didn't like me and didn't want me as a customer?

Ordered a Philadelphia roll it, The rice on this roll was awful over cooked and mushy which made it have a horrible mouth feel. The roll itself had no taste wat so ever all i tasted was the soy sauce i put on it. I dont think im going to go back there are way better options out there. I would recommend another sushi place awful sushi

Amazing sushi and huge portions! Rolls are 2x the size as ones we are use to. Our waitress was Lindsey and she was super nice and the service was fast but not rushed. We got there 45min before our movie and they made sure we got out in time to make showtime. The rest of the staff was pretty nice too. I think we found our new sushi place 🫶👍👍

'Tendon' a favorite on the menu.
Fresh tempura vegetables, white rice, plus sauce and misu with tofu.

Awful service. Ordered 3 rolls an appetizer and tea. Appetizers did show up quick but we sat and waited for an hour with no service the girl never came back to our table. And when I tried to get her attention we were ignored. So we left. Do not recommend!!!

Very good service and excellent atmosphere. Cool climate with moderate lighting. Beautiful decor and very inviting. I had the Bento box #5 and the quality was excellent. Great cooks. Great service. Never had an empty glass. Excellent service.
Portion size was very sadifing and quenched my hunger with it's substance and tantalizing flavor. A very full filling experience. Still sadified hours later. A Great Place To Eat.

No warning of use of peanut dressing on salad, my wife has a allergy and had a bad reaction. The Rice was very over cooked and overly sweet. Service could have been better, took us several minutes to get anyones attention. Wait time was over an hour for our food, also boats don't actually come on boats. Falsely advertised on that front for us at least.

I recently had a terrible experience. The last couple of times they forgot to include all the food items in the order. This time I specifically wrote in the online order to include the soup salad and rice as they have been forgotten before. Picked up the items went home and sure enough they're still missing. I requested they at least credit the salad but the only thing they could offer was in store credit for the future. My friend really wanted these items so ultimately I had to go back to the restaurant to pick them up. Clearly I was very frustrated at this point. I asked to remove the tip and they said they couldn't because it had already been processed. The restaurant itself is poorly ventilated, hot and dirty. I feel take out was the only option but clearly it feels like the restaurant purposefully stiffs the customer to save money. I had been going there for many years. And after all that effort the salad greens were turning brown on the edges and wilting.

Food was good, service was meh.

Restaurant had maybe 8 tables occupied, a server and two gofers at the front. Apparently the server was the only one who could take orders and ask how everything was, and the other 2 sat patrons, gave them water, got things for the server, and bused tables (I don't think I've ever seen anything like it). Maybe it was her off day, but the server seemed to be treating patrons based on how much she thought they'd tip, so I didn't disappoint.
--took her longer to get around to taking my order than to give me the bill. I honestly considered moving to the sushi bar to order.
-- the miso soup was mostly broth, with a tiny piece of seaweed and some crumbles of tofu
--there was sauce on the side of my bento that got on my arm
-- the server never offered to refill my single coffee cup of tea, never offered dessert.
-- the server asked me once how I was doing, but not like she expected me to request anything else, more like autopilot. She didn't say a word when placing the check on the table, picking up the gift card, or returning the card once processed. No "have a nice day", no "hope to see you again soon".
--I felt I was being rushed to leave, as I received the check when I still had about a third of my meal left to eat. Again, no offer to top off my beverage.
--as I passed the server leaving, I witnessed her practically gushing to a table of 4, which is why I referenced the "treating how she expected to be tipped" part.

Not the worst experience, but not in my top 20 either. Maybe I'll just order my food to go from now on.

Edit* changed from 2* to 1*. There are pictures of a dead rat in their soy sauce bucket. Immediately after it went viral they had a major violation for rodents which is public record.

Used to be a great place but I won't go back due to their extremely long wait times. One visit we were told a half hour wait for a table to then be told after being seated it's a 45 minute wait if we wanted sushi. Second visit I ordered to go at 3:40 on a Saturday. Went in a half hour after ordering and was told it would be an hour longer and the restaurant looked like it was really slow. Not worth the wait.

I have been a loyal customer of Tokyo Garden for years now, but my last few experiences have me shopping around for a new favorite sushi restaurant. I ordered my to go order at 4:40, knowing that it usually takes them an hour and a half from when you order till your food is done and this time it took two hours and 40 minutes. It was a Saturday night, the inside was full and there were tons of to go orders. The employees were working their butts off and trying their best. It was not the employees fault. The owner needs to schedule more people to work when they are going to be that busy. Cheaping out on labor is losing them loyal customers. I would rather drive across town than wait nearly three hours for my food.
