Been going there since 2018. Is one of these places where when I saw they got the Michelin rating in 2019 my only thought was "of course they did, totally earned" food is sumptuous!!! Customer service is great, dropped my chopsticks on the floor and the waitress got there before me and handed me a new set... What else can be said?!

Used to come to Oshima quite a bit. This time around, the food quality has really gone down hill. We typically always order the ten-piece omakase and some sides. The omakase was certainly not worth the $70 this time around. Some pieces of the omakase were good; however, other pieces were really not great and not fresh at all such as the black cod. Overall, the quality of the fish is certainly lacking compared to before and we could tell that it was not as fresh as before. We will definitely not be coming back. My advice to management: it’s ok to raise the price of the omakase but do not sacrifice quality. I would come back if the price of omakase went up and the fish was actually fresh compared to before. We get it, inflation is a big deal but there are ways to combat it in other ways and your good customers would understand.

On the pricey side, but probably the best sushi in the area for sure. Attentive service, in a Japanese-ish space. Wait can be insane, or at least it used to be in the past pre-pandemic. First time back since pandemic and was able to get a table with no reservations.

Hate thinking about dinner, so ordered the longer Omakase, some ankimo and other rolls.

I'd recommend it, but be prepare to spend money.

I’ve been going here for a decade and a half. It is my go to high quality and authentic sushi place since my college days. Ohshima is as good as you are going to get with Sushi. If you think you can get salmon anywhere else, ohshima offers something different. The cherry salmon they have is heavenly. What you cannot miss is the love orange clam and black cod sushi. I’ll always come back for more.

Service wasn’t much there except sitting me down at a table and bringing over my food, I tipped about 10% and signed the receipt.

As I walked to my car, the waitress came running out with her little kiosk and said I forgot to pay. Okay, maybe I forgot to sign but as I entered the 10% tip again and signed again, she asked me why? I knew she canceled the first transaction in order to get higher tip, she was trying to put me in an uncomfortable position on the street alone for me to tip higher.

Begging is one thing, but to ask for more money on the street, which is basically panhandling, is another thing.

Don’t get omakase here. We reserved for five for a birthday meal. This is more sushi than omakase. The way they serve is they just bring out a plate with all ten pieces, instead of the chef making it one by one and explaining what they are. The experience is really lacking, we finished within fifteen minutes. The fish were fine but not impressive compared to other omakase places.

Service was wonderful, and I hate to say it, but food was just ok :/. Ive grown up on fish my whole life and was stoked when my friends chose a traditional omakase type spot. But as much as it feels sacrilegious to say, sugarfish is way better and half the price. The fish just wasn't excellent and the bill was $$$. Wish this place the best, but won't be back.

I have been coming here for years, could always count on great food and service. They had an ownership change last year. The new owners are ruining this place and its reputation that the old owners took well over a decade to build. Gave me an attitude and made me feel totally unwelcomed. I feel sad for the wonderful chefs and waitresses I've known for many years. This place used to be packed with a line of people waiting outside. Last two times it wasn't even half full on Fridays. 5 stars for the chefs and waitresses and 0 for the new owners. Sayonara to the wonderful memories I had here.

One of the best Omakase experiences in Orange County.

If you have a chance definitely sit at the sushi bar to have the full experience. As fresh of fish you can get and properly treated sushi rice. Huge variety of catches, decent sake collection, and select beers. Prices are reasonable for this quality of food.

You can tell they put a lot of attention to detail with their precision and patience. As authentic as you can get here in SoCal.

Highly recommend! Definitely try to make reservation via phone to avoid the long waits.

Came here with the family, and luckily we got a table- though it was at the opening time. We got there 5 min before opening and there was already a line. Ordered Omakase for everyone and everyone was happy. All the sushies were super fresh and delicious. Definiately one of the good sushi places Ive tried on so far. I'd want to go back, if I can get a sit on the bar without waiting for a long time.

The service at this restaurant was disappointing. Although the food was satisfactory, the experience was marred by the poor service. The waitress was discourteous and brought the wrong order. I've been coming here since a friend's suggestion last year and I am never disappointed in the slightest. Every piece of sushi I've had is so fresh and flavorful. They apparently get a lot of their fish straight from Japan.

My favorite appetizers are the steamed abalone and monkfish liver. I would be happy only eating those, but you would be crazy to not get the omakase here. I got the garlic buttered clams on the house one time and it was also delicious.

My very first visit had a long wait time outside but nowadays I just call in advance to reserve a seat. This is my first choice for sushi in Southern California.

I used to really like this place. Now, it’s under new ownership.
-The tables are now arranged to maximize the number of seats in the dining area. Every time a server passed behind me, she would bump the back of my chair because it’s so cramped in there.
-There are tacky signs posted on the wall, encouraging patrons to finish their meal within 90 minutes.
-The service is really fast and efficient, but the servers tend to hover when your meal is over to get you out quicker. I felt rushed and uncomfortable trying to calculate the gratuity with a server literally looking over my shoulder, waiting for me to input that info.
-The prices aren’t that transparent. “MP” (Market Price) is kind of a cop-out if everything you want to order is MP. Someone said they paid $65 for a 10 piece omakase, but we paid $95 for a 12 piece omakase. Something smells fishy.
-MOST IMPORTANTLY: the quality of the food, specifically the fish, has taken a huge nose-dive. Considering everything in its entirety, it’s just not worth it to dine here again.

This place is terrible!!! Don’t do it!

It’s like $100 pp for 12 piece omakase and they don’t have a price on the menu. Everything is market price. Fish was so fishy and chewing stringy. They have fake Yelp reviews and hide real ones. If you you dig in to real reviews you’ll see ppl complaining and the restaurant hiding them. They have new owners and the service and quality of food has gone down hill. I’ll forever tell everyone this place gross.

Went in for lunch recently but been here many times previously with mostly good experiences. Noticed new ownership right away. Omakase still a good deal. All other items on menu are tiny portion and overly expensive. Average service and servers. When ordered cold green tea got plastic bottle tea from market, unacceptable at their price point. Tried few items and spent over $350 for lunch for two but overall lackluster service, quality and tiny portions with high $$$ was a disappointment.

This is a legit omakase restaurant. When I eat omakase, I prefer to sit at the bar so my pieces come out one by one. The temperature of the fish is right and the rice is still slightly warm or room temperature. For a larger group of 6, we had to sit at a table. Luckily they still have Americanized sushi like avocado hand rolls for the kids. They have options for omakase. We opted for the 13 pieces included uni, amaebi and Toro. The uni was Santa Barbara uni. Very yummy Japanese. The cod was small and not as fresh. I probably would skip the cod.

The desserts were additional. We ordered hot red bean with mochi, chocolate brownie ish cake with vanilla smoothie. They were nice to give us extra vanilla smoothie so everyone could try the dessert. I like flan so the green tea flan was dense enough and was enjoyable. And hot dessert is my friend.

Sushi Experience №48

I came to this place because I heard it had authentic Japanese chefs. Keep in mind, because of this marketing, as well as the fact that they import their fish from Japan, the prices are going to be sky high. It was like $5 for one piece of nigiri, or $30 for a fish collar. This place is very popular, so make sure to make a reservation or come like 10min before they open, as people will line up outside the restaurant.

Getting that out of the way… It was a great restaurant in terms of the Japanese vibe and authenticity. The chefs are indeed Japanese and you can ask them questions about the dishes which they will answer skillfully.

We did not go here for sushi, though there were many people ordering omakase here. We ordered a variety of their other dishes, including two fish collars (salmon and young yellowtail), the crab stuffed salmon, tempura, and liver. The highlight for me was the salmon collar. Fatty and moist, it was easily the most delicious dish. It far surpassed the young yellowtail, which wasn’t as fatty and tasted fishier. The tempura came out hot, but it had such thick batter that I was overwhelmed by the oily taste. A thinner batter would’ve been better to let the shrimp shine. The stuffed salmon was okay. The crab inside was yummy, but the salmon on the edge was not. I did not eat the liver so I can’t say whether that was good.

I’d like to one day come back for their omakase experience, where I can talk to the chefs at the bar.

How is that sushi comes out in three minutes? Are the rice pre made and the chef slaps the fish on the rice? Omakase should be a dining experience. I also noticed that after the new ownership, the omakase sushi rice is somewhat flat and round (cookie cutter) and wasabi on the plate. You cannot heat cup of noodle faster than they made the sushi.
Two people including tax, $289. Im not sure if the sushi chef can give me a straight answer!

Otoro was so amazing and decadent. We ordered an extra order ($34). Also loved the live shrimp that came in the 13 piece omakase (also comes in 12 piece omakase). Get the shrimp head fried! Kampachi was delicious. Tamago had scallions and was very flavorful. We were seated right away.

Went to Ohshima with my family and had an amazing experience ordering omakase with a few self-selections too.
The pricing is a bit high, but shows in the food's amazing quality. Service was great as well with customers pretty respectful of the quiet ambience. Bit of a hole-in-the-wall place with small seating, so large parties might not work well.

Sake clams had a small kick of alcohol that took my family by surprise. Had Asian glow before the main course even arrived. The seared black cod and every cut of tuna were my favorites.

I've gone back a few times with each time being just as nice as the last. Would definitely recommend this place for more special occasions.

*This review is only for the POOR OPERATIONS of the restaurant*
I’ve known how busy the restaurant is by looking at all the reviews people contributed online. The restaurant tells you that the reservation is only through calls from 5-5:30pm and I called multiple days in a roll and the line is either busy or connected with no one actually answering the phone.
My simple question is, if there’s no one available to pick up the calls of the customers, WHY LIMITING THE RESERVATION WINDOW? WHY NOT OPEN ONLINE RESERVATION OR WAITLIST?
Setting such high barriers to even book a table is not only unethical but also hurting your potential customers = your business.
Will not visit this restaurant until this gets taken care of

Worst experience ever.
First of all, has a 5 month old baby girl (NOT ABLE TO SIT BY HERSELF)
Brought a stroller, OF COURSE. While putting our name on wait list, no one told anything about bringing a baby with stroller in the restaurant. After waiting almost 2 hours (which is understandable since this restaurant is busy), a waiter said the stroller is not acceptable. Even we are sitting on a table for 4, we only had 3 adults. We just needed to move one chair out and put the stroller inside. However, the manager and waiter kept said it was not allowed. And they said there is even NO HIGH CHAIR in the restaurant. I can’t believe that there is any restaurant out there without high chair nor accepting a stroller. I did not want to go another restaurant since I already waited 2 Hours. I needed to carry 5 month old baby and had to eat. This is not a cheap restaurant. They should have better service. Or at least, let customer to bring a stroller if it is not blocking others.

All the fish were fresh and tasty which is actually quite apparent in the photos which was what led me to try this place in the first place. And it did not disappoint. Reservation is a bit tricky and if you don’t reserve be prepared for 1hr wait at the least.

One minor complaint is the lack of draft beer :/

Make reservations! you can call at most one week in advanced and only between 5-5:30pm to make reservations. There's almost always a long (~20-30) people line when they open at 5:30pm for dinner time. Do not arrive late to your reservation as they'll only hold your reservation for 10 minutes.

The food and sashimi was PHENOMENAL. This was one of our more expensive meal but totally worth it. I wish we had time to try everything but good thing we got the 13 piece omakase ($85/person). What an experience! From booking the reservation to actually dining at Ohshima.

Reservations: Call the restaurant from 5-5:30pm to book a dinner reservation. After 62 calls, I managed to talk to someone at the restaurant and secured a 5:30pm reservation. There's a 10 minute grace period if you're running late.

Arrival: I arrived at 5:30pm and there was a line that wrapped toward the chicken shop in the plaza. The hostess will check you in if you had a reservation. If you're waiting in line for dinner without a reservation, anticipate a wait between 1-1.5 hours.

Dinner: We opted for the chefs omakase (10 pieces) and ordered some extras at the end. We had the following for dinner:

Sea bream
Medium toro
Scallop
Amberjack
Sea bass
Cherry salmon
John Dory
Bluefin Tuna
Black Cod
Japanese Butterfish
Uni
Sweet Shrimp

Everything was absolutely delicious! The nigiri was fresh and took you to flavor town with each bite. The sushi here is glazed with soy or sea salt and yuzu. You could taste the fresh natural flavors from the seafood selection for the night.

The bill came out to ~ $210 after tax for the (2) chefs 10 piece omokase, (2) sweet shrimp, (2) uni and one fried chicken cartilage.

Definitely worth dining here despite the painstaking reservations. I highly recommend dining here if you're looking for a date night or celebrating a special occasion.

Ohshima, I'll be back! Looking forward to making another 60+ calls to dine here.

El servicio fue excelente y el sushi y sashimi son de una calidad insuperable. Me senté en el bar y deje que el chef escojiera lo que me serviría estuvo perfecto. Gracias vuelvo la próxima vez que este en Anaheim.

This is one of my favorite Omakase spot in Southern California. We ordered Omakase chef special with ten different fish . Including Toro, halibut, fois gras , cherry Salmon etc . The food taste so amazing. The sushi is spectacularly good so fresh so delicious, best quality Sushi I’ve had . This place is super small , before you come you’d better make reservation.

Exceptionally good sashimi. One of the best in OC along with Shunka, Ootoro, and Hanare. Get the cherry salmon. Long wait if you miss the first wave. Small intimate interior.

Wow 'taste' experience! I chose to sit at the bar and I had the chef's sushi omakase which is provided at a fixed price (10 pieces). The chef was very energetic and nice. His serving pace was just perfect too. He also kindly answered all my questions whenever I asked (not many though hh). When I just entered this restaurant, I immediately knew this place was going to be the right one for me. Btw, there was a waiting line and the seats at the bar were entirely filled when I just arrived.

Here's my conclusion. I really enjoyed sushi here. All were extremely meaty, soft and tasty with a variety of toppings or flavors. All the neta today were like fatty toro. I could taste plum or Japanese apricot, yuzu, salt, wasabi and even some mysterious stuffs. Btw, their wasabi and ginger were just perfect too. I remember the slices of gingers were refilled more than three times for me.
I had sea bream from Japan, bluefin Tuna, scallop from Japan, amberjack from Japan, sea bass or Suzuki, cherry salmon or Sakura Masu, gold stripe from Japan, black cod, inada (young yellowtail) from Japan and bluefin toro as the last one. Sea bream sushi was full of pleasant flavors and I really loved it. Noticeably, the scallop I had here was the best scallop sushi I've ever had. It was tender and 'extremely juicy'. Black cod was seared and had some appetizing grilled flavor. I ate gold stripe sushi (금태아님) for the first time and it came with an exotic, unfamiliar jelly-like topping. And it was also my first time to eat Inada (young yellowtail) and it slightly tasted like Shima Aji. Anyway, it had some characteristic savory taste. Again, all tasted just perfect! Excellent balance (toppings, spices), very fresh ingredients, most importantly enough volume of neta and sushi rice in good proportions, a variety of fish choices and great back-up with many great side dishes.

Additionally, I ordered Uni sushi and then just sea bream again. For the last thing, I ordered miso soup with fish and it was also 👍👍👍 in flavor. The broth contains a big chunk of fish. That's also 👍👍👍 I felt like I was traveling in Tokyo and had taste of my real favorite things and some adventurous things all at once.
*my little tip) Everything is ready-to-eat once each piece is placed on the plate. Depending on one's preference, you may add some wasabi only. Otherwise, ask the chef to tailor to your own taste preference.

Amazing omakasi! Great little gem but can very challenging to find a spot here. I've been trying to eat here for years. This place has some of the best fish I've ever eaten. The chefs prepare everything with heart and their presentation brings out the wonderful flavor of the fish. No need for soy sauce because each fish is prepared in such a way to bring out the most flavor. Blue fin toro was such a treat.

We’ll where do I begin? This is definitely a hidden gem. Didn’t even know this was around the corner from my house. The atmosphere is soothing dim lighting and the ambience is great. The quality of fresh fish is so good be prepared for your taste buds to be amazed. This brings me back to when I lived in Japan. So many memories of great quality food cooked to perfection the zenzai and the chocolate bar is so delightful. The customer service is so good everyone here is so attentive and welcoming other people who sat next to us highly recommended this amazing spot. If you want some high quality food and sushi come here

Tried the Omakase at this place, located in the plaza in Orange. The restaurant itself is very small and dark, a few tables with a bar with all these amazing sushi chef. I still don't know why most omakase places don't have more comfortable seating, especially for the price. The lighting was also extremely dark at the tables.

We ordered one Omakase and my favorite black cod, uni pasta and steam clams to share. All the fish are so fresh and extremely delicious, even the Wasabi tastes very differently. The miso soup with shrimp heads are very delicious! We celebrated his birthday there, but the ambiance doesn't seem to cater to celebrations.

I have to say calling to make reservations at this restaurant almost made me not want to go here. The phone line is only available in between 5-5:30, and most of time it will be busy tone. I had to call 4/5 times to make reservations for dinner.

Overall food : 5🌟

Food is always good and price is reasonable. Excellent quality of fish and also very consistent. But always long line. Also you don't want to be last group because everyone wants to go home towards end of the day and don't expect any good service from the sushi chefs but restaurant services are very good.

Surprisingly good value for omakase to-go. Sushi itself was a bit disappointing, though. Generous cuts and reasonable quality for a random strip mall in Orange, but not enough to be worth the drive, especially if you're used to downtown Los Angeles' Japantown or, further west, Sawtelle.

201022 The Omakase is delicious. Presentation is pleasing to the eyes, freshly prepared meticulously, and it tastes delicious. They close at 130 pm and I went shortly before 1 pm. Most patrons have left after the lunch rush and it was perfect to dine indoor with only a couple at the sushi bar. The two sushi chefs, waiter, and waitress were all wearing face masks. Only two slips of order sheets were passed out. For other dishes, one must read the tiny prints on the menu tapped to the wall under very dim light. Or, one can scan the QR code at the LRH corner and read it from your mobile device. The way to order in the near future after the pandemic, I presume...touchless.

One of the best omakase places hands down. I've been here many times and have never been let down. My favorites are the black cod and Toro. You can make reservations here but you have to call between 5 and 5:30pm. If there is a busy tone then keep trying. Sometimes there are a lot of people calling in.

During the COVID-19 time they are doing take out only with nigiri and omakase sets being the only menu items. The omakase varies from 10/12/13 pieces. Overall, even with it only being take out, this is still a great experience.

Freshest, highest graded, yet reasonable omakase you could find in all OC or probably of entire SoCal. Staff and chefs have masks on. The hostess takes temperature I upon entry before seating. The bar and tables are sanitized frequently and there are shields up to protect diners and chefs. Social distancing and spaced tabling is strongly enforced at this ultra squeaky clean, odor free establishment.

Just call ahead (5pm-530pm) and try the sushi. I have only had the sushi so I can't vouch for anything else. I just noticed I hadn't written a review. This was one of the best sushi places I have ever been to. Idk what's up with the other reviews who say otherwise, maybe it was just a bad day for them, but when I went it was amazing. Chef's choice is the way to go if you LOVE sushi. Might not be for the casual sushi person because the fish you have never heard of might be a bit strong. I believe it was $45 a person for 8 pieces which again sushi lovers will understand and happily accept once trying it. They have a neat little bio of the place too on their website. It was the awards and the bio that originally won me over.
