Cozy, eclectic space serving inventive sushi & seafood dishes made with local fish and produce.
We arrived around 7:15p for a 7:30p reservation. Reira welcomed us and proposed for us to have a drink first or wait a few minutes for our table. After a very short wait Reira brought us to our table. Morgan was our host and did a great job in taking our order and accommodating special changes to some of the dishes we ordered.
The swordfish pastrami Nigiri with Miso Mustard was very original and the cured process and a slight smokey flavor completed the experience. The Sautéed Broccolini tasty and fresh, cooked to perfection al dente.
We each ordered a roll. The Hedgehog was very nice with a copious portion of fish and delicate truffle oil, garlic and a few other complementing fine flavors.
The Dragonfly roll consisted of among other ingredients spiced tuna and shrimp tempura, avocado, citrus soy etc.
The menu consists of a main menu and extensive daily menu, an interesting beer and sake menu and some interesting beverages like Kombucha and hot and cold alcohol free drinks. Special mention for the creative plant based items for those who have such preference. All in all creative food experience from chefs who understand that it starts with quality ingredients and a front of house team who embodies the term

What an AMAZING birthday dinner at Wrench and Rodent again 😁😁 All I can say is WOW!! Chef Loren never disappoints when it comes to his sushi creations! All of the amazing and fresh flavors! He is AWESOME! I tried the “Hedgehog” roll for the first time and loved it! Everything that was prepared by Chef Loren are such delicious treats 😁👌🏾John and I had such a wonderful time as always. We can’t wait to come back 🥰👌🏾🤩🍣

Was super excited to try this spot because it was highly recommended, but it was such a disappointing experience.
The food lacked flavor! The dishes were nicely presented but weren’t very good in terms of taste. The menu is also very tuna forward, lacked variety.
The experience wasn’t great either. The tables are very low and the chairs are uncomfortable. There were so many flies in the restaurant, it was annoying to keep swatting while trying to eat.
They were also out of lemonade and Prosecco so couldn’t make our initial drink orders. Just seemed a bit disorganized.
Unfortunately, I wouldn’t come back.

I had an amazing experience today with my mom (it was her birthday). This was an especially great experience when I juxtapose it against the last time when I took my mom out for her birthday last year at Nobu Malibu. The food was delightful (try the Albacore with black pepper cabbage with garlic chilis) and the service was excellent. Special shout-out to our server Shaella who was always attentive and friendly.

My friend and I both did the omakase here and it was fantastic! Really interesting dishes with a lot of flavor and variety. It’s also a very sizable portion so if you’re concerned about the cost, I would say it is worth it for the amount of food you get. Our service was wonderful also. Some of the best sushi I have ever had, and I eat a lot of sushi!

What a very unique place they have a wonder menu. We obviously went with the Omakase and also ordered my younger children some rolls as you see in the pictures. This OMAKASE takes you on a ride, a culinary experience. Fresh fish dressed with educated expertise and a garnish of flare. Mouthwatering delectable piece by piece, you get six courses it's plenty of food. You have to give this a try for 80 dollars. This is a steal. What a great hidden gem. I will be back.

Fresh, quality fish!
We tried so many different things I can’t even list them all! I tried the omakase and my husband had various sashimi and other items.
Unfortunately, I was a bit underwhelmed by the omakase. It was certainly plenty of food! However, we found the tartare in course 1 to be a bit plain and other items that were served with sauces to be quite overpowering. I would love to see a better balance of flavor where the fish (which is clearly a very high quality) is the star of the plate!
I have to also say, the Uni here was the best I’ve ever had! So light and fresh, not bitter or “fishy” at all. My husband also said the Blue Fin Tuna and Yellowtail sashimi, and the Bok Choy were spectacular!
As far as service goes, we were there at the start of dinner rush on a Friday night and did experience some delays in being seated and receiving our next course. However, overall attentiveness and a couple small comps well made up for this.
Lastly, Erica took great care of us and deserves a shoutout!

Came for an important anniversary, put it in the notes online when placing the reservation, but felt like we were forgotten about all night.
Server didn’t check on us frequently even though it wasn’t a busy night, too busy performing birthday celebrations for other guests
Food was adequate, but felt like the occasion was ignored. Left a lot to be desired for one of the “best” sushi restaurants in Oceanside.

I have to say that after several people recommended this place we were a bit disappointed upon finally trying it out. There were a few highlights (the anchovy nigiri), but overall the rice was not the quality, texture, or seasoning that you would expect from a restaurant of this level. We also tried the hamachi special with passion fruit which was interesting but overpriced - if you do the hamachi, the nigiri is much better.
The atmosphere was a bit weird - the art choices are out of place. It was also quite hot that day and there was no air conditioning, so it also felt like the food was the same tepid temperature.
My beer was also warm and tasted of soy sauce but I didn’t really have the chance to give feedback because even though the restaurant was pretty empty, our waitress didn’t really check in on us. Needless to say we won’t be back.

I used to recommend this place heavily but it's definitely not what it used to be.
So, just to start with the most important issue: the rice was very bad. I know it's a common cliche to say that the rice is the most important part of sushi... but in this case the rice was extremely dry and grainy while also being almost completely unseasoned. I'm really not sure how this texture of rice was even achieved, the texture was like day-old rice or something. I can see in the other reviews that several people had a similar experience with the rice. Someone else mentioned they saw that there were preformed nigiri kept in the fridge? If so, that's quite disappointing at this price point.
On top of that, most of the dishes were just under seasoned in general for my palate. As someone who pretty regularly goes out to eat high end sushi, I think I have an idea of what level of salt is typical and this was much lower than average. Typically, you should not need to add salt or soy sauce to nigiri pieces that have already been sauced/seasoned by the chef.
Not everything was bad, the scallops with truffle oil were nice and sweet and I happen to enjoy that truffle flavor. The kampachi also had a nice texture.
The atmosphere was a bit rough because it was relatively hot and humid and there is no air conditioning. The fans were also not turned on for the first 15-20 minutes so it was pretty stuffy for the majority of our time there.

Amazing! After watching Chef Davin do a Seafood Demo at the Oceanside Harbor Fishmarket, we enjoyed an incredible dinner at his "Wrench and Rodent" restaurant in town. We were so blown away with the balance of wonderful, incredibly inspired flavors in every bite of sushi presented on the Omakase menu. I ordered the Yakisoba (perfect) because I was leary of a sushi order due to a previous underwelming experience at another very expensive restaurant in Orange County but my son and his fiancé were all about the sushi. I was immediately won back (so glad they shared!). This experience with Chef Davin's flavors was incredible. Go to this restaurant and enjoy yourself...the fresh creations on his menu are spectacular, the ambiance is comfortable and unpretentious, service was friendly and on target. We will be back even though it is an hour drive away!!!

My husband and I came here for our anniversary and we were very disappointed. All the reviews were so good, but it was a total fail. We got the Omakase. The fish slices were too thick, the rice had absolutely no flavor and it was too much rice in the nigiri pieces. The choice of added flavor to each nigiri was off…too sweet and did not complement the fish. I truly don’t understand how this place got such good ratings. Maybe we just have high taste. We have been to Japan as well as eaten at some of the best sushi places in San Diego. This place wasn’t one of them. Don’t waste your money.

I’d never been here before, but I ended up here because the place I originally went to wouldn’t let me in (Ohana Bites was serving food at the Moose Lodge down the street, but I was told it was a private event 😞). Anyway, they serve Kurosawa sake here (Nigori only), a definite +. The special, local yellowtail sashimi with passion fruit and pickled jalapeño was bomb. I could’ve eaten 3 of those. The chicken yakisoba was ok. I lived in Japan, so I’m not used to chicken breast in my yakisoba (a lil dry for my taste). Becuz I didn’t finish that, I had room for dessert. I ordered the poached pear with rosé sauce, fresh whipped cream and berries. Yum! So I’m gonna ignore the yakisoba blip (hey, some ppl may like white meat in their yakisoba 🤷🏻♀️) and give 5 stars. Plus the service went above and beyond. I’ll be back.

Let me just say, I am all about the food and dont really care about the decor! Particularly for sushi, but this place needs some serious deep cleaning!
This review is for those who wanna check this place out mainly for Sashimi or Nigiri.
We were seated outside, so I never did get to see the sushi bar before I ordered, otherwise we would have left! I had to pass it on the way to the bathroom later and the smell was awful!
I ordered their Omakase! first bite of the first Nigiri, I realized the fish was not fresh, and it kept getting worse with each course. I had to spit out my food fearing food poisoning a few times and left the last two course untouched.
Our server was super nice, super friendly and a delight, that's why i gave two stars. but unfortunately we won't be going back.

I wanted to write a review on the Omakase, as I almost didn’t get it based on the reviews. But, after going to Wrench and Rodent and taking a chance on the Omakase, I would say it’s well worth it. It’s 6 courses, two of which are 5 pieces of nigiri. The flavors were unique and delicious. We added the scallop nigiri as well, which I would highly recommend. It may not be a traditional Omakase, but i think that’s the point! They have unique flavors you don’t find everywhere. The fish is super fresh. Overall I was impressed and satisfied.

Omakase was one of the more bizarre meals of my life. First two courses were horrifically bad. Muddled strawberries with raw fish is a complete miss. These flavors do not jive! Way too sweet. Second course the fish was completely overwhelmed by pickled vegetables. Two of the worst dishes I’ve ever had anywhere. Third course was a slight improvement (nigiri) but it was sub par. Way too much rice and not seasoned correctly. We had to tap out after that. We stopped the omakase midway and bounced.
Service and ambience are nice.

What an awful dining experience. We arrived at 830, the earliest they could seat us. We ordered the omikase, and they just pushed out everything is fast as they could. They started stacking the chairs and running the vacuum. We could not hear each other from across the table. We spoke to the manager who could only come up with "oh, Sorry ." Not a place I can recommend to anyone

I would first like to commend the staff on their service. All staff were smiling, pleasant, and plates were cleared quickly.
I understand that this is a casual/fusion take on sushi, but I just want to leave an honest review if you're looking for an omakase experience.
The omakase included 3 appetizers and 10pc nigiri. Overall the palate on this menu was much too sweet. The first two apps had passionfruit and pomegranate and the last had sweet potato. Maybe 7 or 8 of the nigiri had a sweet sauce/ condiment. Additionally, the rice was not seasoned properly, with one batch not seeming seasoned at all.
The drinks were fine.

The atmosphere, presentation and sushi are excellent. The part that was disappointing is the salad with rotten leaves. I understand it can be hard to fish out all the bad leaves of the salad but it is imperative for a restaurant not to serve food that can make someone sick. The cocktail was mediocre to taste, the presentation was much better than the actual content.
Would I recommend this restaurant? Yes, for the convenience of the location and a good sushi. Try it once and please share your experience.

A great omakase experience. We went for a birthday dinner and were treated to fish in a variety of delicious preparations, including sashimi, nigiri, and whole roasted fish. Dishes were well-plated and flavorful. The salad combined the creaminess of burrata with the sweetness of pear, the bite of arugula, and the saltines of sardine. The whole fried fish was perfectly tender and topped with fresh sprouts and pickled beets. The birthday bread pudding for dessert was a nice way to round out the meal.
It's a good quantity of food for an omakase dinner-- six courses, though dessert is not included. Some of the dishes are more experimental and reward the adventurous eater, including the tuna bloodline yakitori (which was rich and meaty) and the sea urchin marrow chaser shot (which blended salty and sweet). The flip side is that not every dish will be to every eater's taste, but we had a great dinner and would return for the a la carte sushi, for sure.

First let me say the service and presentation was spot on, 5 star. This rating is based on the Omakase experience, and we have dined at some of the best Omakase restaurants in the world so our bar is pretty high. The variety of fish, presentation, and sauce pairings were excellent. However, they fell short on the rice, which was missing an acidic element (usually the inclusion of rice vinegar). This would have elevated the flavors of the fish. In addition, several pieces of our fish did not seem of high quality and were rather fishy or dried out. It is a shame because the presentations were excellent. All the cooked offerings were great and we were particularly impressed with the sauces, sushi cut and construction.

A must-know word when visiting the Wrench and Rodent Seabastropub restaurant is "Omakase," which loosely translates from Japanese to English as "chef's choice." If you're feeling adventurous, I highly recommend allowing the chefs to guide your culinary journey for the evening. However, if you prefer to stick to your tried-and-true favorites, fear not - the menu boasts a plethora of options that cater to all palates.
In all my visits to this establishment, I can confidently say that I have never had the same experience twice, but I have never left feeling anything but satisfied. As someone who often brings clients here for business meetings, I can attest that the Wrench and Rodent Seabastropub consistently impresses and delights all who dine here.
As a longtime patron, I am proud to mention that the owner and head chef/creator is not only an avid user of my culinary knives but also helped me create the perfect Yanagiba (Japanese style sushi knife). The dedication and attention to detail that the staff puts into every dish is evident in the exceptional quality of the cuisine.
For sushi lovers, the Wrench and Rodent Seabastropub is a must-visit destination that pushes the boundaries of what you may be accustomed to. It's an immersive and unforgettable culinary experience that I'm confident will leave you pleasantly surprised and eager to return.

My friends picked this restaurant to challenge me. Being from Japan, they were curious about what it good the dishes. I was delighted that they picked the restaurant. The flavors and textures of each dish was incredible and fun! I spent time trying to figure out ingredients! I would definitely return when I am in the area.

Some of the best food we've had in a long time. We ordered two different rolls and both were phenomenal, and tasted FRESH. we also got some noodles, they were great as well. We were able to get seated right away, but I would strongly suggest reservations. Service was fine, the host ended up grabbing us water and clearing dishes when our server was busy.

Great local owned and community loved spot in South O. Food is always fresh and on point. Staff is attentive and friendly. The manager Reira goes above and beyond to make sure the customers are happy and enjoying their experience. Great vegetarian and vegan options too! It’s one of Oceanside’s “don’t miss” restaurants!

Fantastic experience. Amazing use of local sourced fish from San Diego and orange county fisherman as well as san diego farmed produce. Extremely thoughtful preparation and execution. Great service and very reasonably priced

Phenomenal! We each got the six course Omakase dinner and every course of the dinner was incredible. The plating and presentation was outstanding. The creativity and thoughtfulness of each dish perfectly highlighted the amazing fish. The first two courses were sashimi and were incredible.
The third and fifth courses were nigiri, a variety of types of fish and preparation. The richness flavors of each piece of fish was incredible. The fourth course was a lovely, light coconut potato soup that provided a nice break between nigiri courses. The last course was a large prawn served over a light sauce.
Meals like this are such a delight, getting to try so many different items and at a restaurant like this, each bite is a culinary adventure to savor.
We ended the meal with the citrus matcha cheesecake, which is definitely one of the best cheesecakes I have had in awhile, light, creamy, flavorful.
The restaurant is dimly lit and a sort of noisy pub environment, but the sushi is outstanding!

We have been coming here since the days of fish joint and I probably had the worst sushi experience of my life with their omakase tasting for my wife's bday. I did not want to blast them online but I emailed the owners and never received a reply. The nigiri was all premade and sandbagged in the fridge ready to go for when they are busy. Their fried whole fish course was absolutely inedible. It had zero salt, acid, heat or any flavor whatsoever, the fish was not fried properly bc it was straight mush and inedible bones. It's sad to see an Oceanside local restaurant choose more covers on a week night than producing the quality that got them there. I will be driving down to sushi ota from now on. It's not worth the risk for 200$!!

If you are within an hour of this place it is well worth the drive! Incredibly fresh options with explosive flavors that will truly impress. Great servers and a fun location. Cocktails are spot on and some tasty sake choices. Definitely ask the chef about some of the off-the-menu options such as the dry-aged sushi they are working on. Back patio is amazing for a large group.

The best thing here to me, has been the Hedgehog roll and the people who work here.
I'm not too into the asthetics of the restaurant atmosphete, and although I can't really put my finger on it, I think that maybe the restatement just needs a refresh on the design.
I ordered the scallops with caviar and it had a very strong fishy smell. I've cooked scallops at home and they never have a smell. My server checked with the chef. The chef, she assured me that fresh scallops are supposed to smell like that. And the ones I cook at home are different than what they use. My server said he even tried it and it tasted good. Yet, even though I was assured, I just couldn't stomach eating it because of the smell...so they replaced it with a roll. The roll wasn't equal in cost, but I was glad for their kindness and it was yummy.

Food was exceptional and service was very good. I had the omakase and everything was delicious. Came here for a birthday dinner and they even threw in a free dessert. We sat in the front outdoor space, but I understand the back patio is much nicer.

Love this sushi spot in South Oceanside!! It’s a staple of the community. We have been coming here since it opened. The rolls are great the power bowl is my fav. The owners have a passion for good food minimal waste and are so creative.

They must be paying people to write good reviews. The food quality is 4/10. The service is horrendous. We ordered 8 dishes and they brought them in a five min window - the server pointed out we have no room on our table. Then when the last dish came because we sent it back because there was no room on the table they sent it back out cold. They also kept my gf on hold for 27 minutes when we tried to call to adjust our reservation. Total incompetence and so over rated. If your on vacation don’t take the chance coming here.

I think I hyped this place up too much, cus I was unsuccessful at securing a reservation on our last SD trip. All adults in our party did omakase, which was 5 courses plus tiny 1st course. The fish was fresh and tasty with unique sauces. But we mainly had sushi and I was thinking it would be more sashimi or carpacio. Only 1 small dish was like sashimi, the seared albacore. The butternut squash soup was really amazing! The service was okay, there were big delays between courses, leaving us wondering if nothing else was coming. We ran out of time to try any dessert.

Not sure why this restaurant is rated so high....we were looking forward to great sushi but sadly was flavorless....had to ask for ginger and wasabi....only saw our waitress once and the overall experience immediately was off because we were seated outside when I selected a 430 reservation inside restaurant....they claimed to be "booked" in restaurant when I brought this up...however the restaurant still had vacant tables by the time we left. Won't be returning here.

Visiting from Austin. Hotel massage therapist said it’s her favorite restaurant. Had to have it. Let’s just say it was the closest to a religious experience as it comes. I felt the love that went into each delicate piece that was a work of art. This was a highlight of our visit. Omakase

One of the worst meals I’ve ever had at a restaurant. Appalling service. Served in a dirty littered space in the backyard. Tiny slivers of fish served topped with sweet nonsense. Avoid at all costs
