Let’s go back to one of the best places I’ve ever eaten in Orange County. It’s located across from Fashion Island in Newport. This is my second visit in the last few months, which should already tell you how much I love this place. Whenever I’m thinking of a spot to impress someone, they always deliver.
This time I wanted to try their brunch experience. Started off with the most refreshing cocktails and half a Peking duck because why not? Now that I explored more of their brunch menu, my favorites are the Lobster & chorizo scramble, Mixed berry French toast, and maybe an extra Breakfast burrito depending on how hungry I am ;) And definitely save some room for dessert!
It makes me so happy to hear when people visit this beautiful restaurant, and even more when they love it and want to come back. This spot truly deserves all the hype.
Thanks for reading! ^-^

Been here multiple times but almost every time despite having a reservation I had to wait for up to 30 minutes to get seated. One time I made a reservation for a table on the patio for 8:30 pm. By 9 pm they were only able to get me seated inside. Service was incredibly slow and we had to ask for bread 3 times. At 10:30 while we were still eating the main course they brought us a check implying we should leave (they have a 2 hour table limit) as our reservation was for 8:30 even though we were only seated at 9 and not at the table I’ve originally booked. Rest of the times everything was fine. Waiting stuff is really nice and professional but it looks like they are understaffed. On the bright side - food, cocktails, and atmosphere here are amazing. Every single item I tried from the menu was outstanding, especially beef carpaccio, tuna pizza, carrot cake, and green flash cocktail.

Honestly, the food is good here, the half peeking duck was my favorite 5/5. It was delicious. The lamb was a 4/5 it could use more of a sear on the outside the sushi was pretty good 4/5 The steak was delicious 5/5 The desert was a 0/5 but the presentation was beautiful. it was a chocolate shell with a matcha cake piece and a cream on the inside that was so flavorless and gross. But the presentation was spot on. And our server was great as well. She was very sweet. The worst part about this experience after checking in with the reservation you're waiting around for almost 50 minutes after your reservation to sit. The restaurant was extremely crowded. It kind of reminds you of Vegas. It's a very popular place, but you shouldn't be waiting almost an hour to sit down with a reservation. And you have to keep checking in with the hostess to find out where you are at in the line because they don't text you. And then their kitchen closes at 9:30 so you make reservations for nine get there at 8:40 pm you don't get sat till 10 and the whole place starts shutting down it's quite the unforgivable experience. I don't recommend this place. But enjoy the pictures. :-)

Not to mention the carrot cake off the charts!! We definitely will keep coming back again👌

This is a restaurant that offers good breakfast, desserts, service, and atmosphere to hang out. It does serve steaks, seafood, and sushi, but we didn't have a chance to try these on this trip. But what we have tried, the dishes were tasty and portion sizes were good. Overall, we had a good experience here and will definitely come back to try its other dinner offerings.

Steakhouse and sushi spot located inside the Pendry Hotel. Had a private room for a work dinner and we had a set menu that was served family-style. Our servers were on top of it and the ambiance was nice. The restaurant seemed pretty popular as there was a wait to get in throughout the next but there is s bar area to hang out at. Indoor and outdoor seating available.
Food wise, we ate the following:
- Blue fin tuna pizza - my favorite app. There’s truffle oil and the tuna is nice and smooth
- Wagyu carpaccio - I didn’t have this but my coworkers liked it
- Beet tartare - an interesting vegetarian twist on a classic. The bagel chips were a fun touch.
- Caesar salad - there’s a generous amount of cheese and the croutons are few, but are stuffed
- Bavette steak - the tiniest bit overdone but I really liked the chimichurri sauce
- Rigatoni alla vodka - my favorite of the entrees; nicely creamy and al dente
- Salmon - this is on top of rice and has a miso sauce. It’s a healthy option.
- Brussel sprouts - standard side but it’s a classic
- Whipped potatoes - I didn’t try this but my coworker was so affronted by this he ordered bread rolls
- Wild mushrooms - I liked this side a lot; very earthy
- Bread rolls - these came with a honeycomb ginger butter that was very aesthetic, but by this point I was stuffed
- Carrot cake - this was a huge slice that came with chocolate sorbet; it was pretty to look at but standard
- Chocolate cake - I preferred this dessert as I can never say no to a lava cake

I recently dined at set for my birthday and while the experience was memorable for some reasons, it fell disappointingly short in others.
First and foremost, the ambiance was absolutely exquisite. The decor was elegant yet inviting, with thoughtful attention to detail that made the space feel both refined and comfortable. Similarly, the food was beautifully presented and quite delicious, with each dish showcasing a skillful balance of flavors and textures. The culinary craftsmanship is undoubtedly a highlight of this establishment.
However, the service left much to be desired. From the outset, there was an evident lack of attentiveness and efficiency. It took an inordinate amount of time for our orders to be taken, and the wait for the food to arrive was unreasonably long—even for a busy evening. Unfortunately, the same inefficiency extended to the end of the meal, where obtaining our check became a frustrating ordeal.
While I would recommend this restaurant for its outstanding food and beautiful setting, the subpar service detracted significantly from the overall experience. I sincerely hope the management addresses these service issues, as they undermine the restaurant's otherwise excellent potential.

We had reservations 2 weeks in advance and requested patio seating but when we arrived they didn’t have any and stuck us in the back corner and didn’t bring any menus out for a while, we had to ask for a cocktail menu and when we ordered our drinks the waiter didn’t ask for our ID and just said is everyone 21 and was fine with that but then he came back to check the ID which we had no problem with and showed him and left after like everything was okay and a few minutes later the manager comes to check again and we were fine showing it again but then a new server takes over because the original guy dropped us as a table. with the slow service, getting double carded, and the fact it was taking over 35 minutes and we still haven’t got one drink out we decided to leave and told the host we won’t be eating here, the new server came out to the front of the hotel to find us and said our drinks are ALMOST ready but we kindly explained to him what happened and how it made us feel and instead of sorry he said okay and walked away. we are very disappointed in the service here and i don’t recommend.

I love the outdoor seating at this restaurant. Great ambience and great food. We ordered a bunch of menu items going down the menu. Everything tasted fresh. The wait staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. For parking we used valet. It was a very busy restaurant, but the atmosphere was great and the voice level wasn’t so loud. Also great location near Fashion Island.

I emailed the GM, Sanjiv, to give them a chance to make this right but have not gotten a response.
I have to be honest in expressing my disappointment with SET. We were seated on time, which was great.
However:
Menus were not provided - we had to ask.
Under the tree, a leaf fell into my husband’s water before he even had the chance to drink anything. We asked to get it replaced and were charged $8 for another bottle of water!?
A steak knife was not provided for my prime rib. I had to ask.
Chopsticks and soy sauce were not provided to my husband for his sushi. He had to ask.
The prime rib was warm / borderline cold upon delivery and was undercooked. I asked for medium and it looked rare, but I rolled with it. What could go wrong? Lol.
The food deliverer assumed the prime rib was for my husband because he was a man, and sushi for me as a woman.
The bread was excellent. The buche de noel dessert was great as well.
I got pretty sick from my prime rib dish for the next day or so. So, be careful.
The trees, the lights, the ambiance was cute. The music was strange for a Christmas Eve dinner - nothing holiday themed at all.
Usually service falls short when waitstaff is overseeing too many tables. I assume that is the case - both of us have been in that situation as prior waitstaff. But… this seems to be a trend with reviews here. I was hoping they improved based on feedback but they are not there.
I requested to be issued at least a partial refund for our visit given the poor service and that I got sick. SET has ignored my emails.
Go elsewhere - there are PLENTY of options especially in the near vicinity where you’ll get way better service and better quality food (and you won’t get sick). This place is only good for cocktails and bread.

The service was great and our lovely server even brought out a birthday cheesecake with a sparkler candle. The vibe and ambiance was beautiful in the restaurant. The experience was great and I'm so glad that thy have improved their dessert menu from when they first opened.

I had a very disappointing experience at Set Steak and Sushi. The service was incredibly slow from the start— it took over 15 minutes just for someone to offer us water. We ordered two appetizers from the sushi bar, and after waiting another 20 minutes, the server informed us that they had run out of one of the items we selected. The sushi roll we did receive was mediocre at best, which was surprising considering this is supposed to be a Steak & Sushi restaurant.
We visited during brunch, and the atmosphere was chaotic. It was extremely loud, with several intoxicated groups at 2 p.m. on a Sunday, which made the overall experience unpleasant. The service was unbearably slow, and the food was just average.
I originally went there hoping to speak with a manager about booking a Christmas party, but after this visit, I’m glad I didn’t commit. This was supposed to be a birthday celebration, which I even mentioned to the host, but it turned out to be a huge letdown. I definitely won't be returning.

This place is an absolute joke. They don’t care about the customer experience at all—just see you as another check to cash in. We had a terrible experience last time we were here, and they gave us a voucher for two people to come back. We decided to give them another shot, hoping to have a nice dinner with the family. Big mistake.
Our waiter was practically on break every time she came to our table, and it took a ridiculous an hour and a half for our food to arrive. When it finally did, all three steaks were completely wrong. I ordered mine medium, and it came out well done. Same for my dad. My girlfriend’s filet, which was supposed to be medium, was basically raw. The waiter barely apologized, then disappeared for another five minutes.
When we asked for the manager, we were told he was on the phone. Seriously? We got up and left right then and there. They blew it again, and even worse this time. Don’t waste your time or money here. There are plenty of places that actually care about their customers—this isn’t one of them.

Not sure why this had 3.5 stars? It was our first time there on 7/5 and it was amazing. From the food to the service to the atmosphere everything was first class. We sat on the patio and loved it. The trees in the patio made for a such a beautiful setting. The service was on point and I would put it right up there with any of the best find dining restaurants.

I had high hopes for this place based on what I saw on IG but when we went, it was subpar. The cost of the meal and experience didn't warrant the price.
I would much rather go to Water Grill, which has better service and food for the same amount I'm paying.
If you want to go for the gram, do cocktails and eat somewhere else.

We visited SET restaurant on Sunday, June 9, 2024 for lunch. We ordered coffee, which was not hot. We asked the helper to change it, which he did. This time, it was not hot either. Then, for a third time, he steamed the coffee to make it hot. Our waitress refilled our coffee, but again, it was not hot. We asked the reason. She mentioned that the lid of their coffee maker was broken and told us other people had also complained. She said her manager was aware of the situation, and nothing was done about it. We wonder if getting a lid for their coffee maker is too much for them. What food quality were we served?

We had the worst experience ever ! The server was very rude!! We were looking forward to dine in. The food was stale my friend did not eat the sushi as it wasn't fresh after one bite she was scared of food poisoning . The pasta I ordered was cold poor quality. We ordered Caviar and again no lemon the cracker were not crispy nor fresh. I do not recommend this restaurant! The only good thing was the atmosphere.

The vibe here is very upscale and beautiful. The food is pretty good. The service was just ok. But I have never been charged $33 for a vodka martini and $27 for a margarita. Those prices are criminal. Drinks at the Four Seasons aren’t even that expensive. The cherry on top is when you pay for the valet I asked if I could include a tip and the guy said no. He told me I could personally Venmo the guy who brought my car out. That’s nuts. I won’t be back.

Located in what’s once the Four Seasons, SET is an indoor/outdoor venue. The ambience is charming. Our waiter was terrific. We were a large party and we ordered lotsa stuff. The steak set is pretty good. Wagyu from US and AUS. Ordered medium in order to appease the most, it all came out very very rare. Sliced and arranged beautifully on large round platter with three sauces, grilled tomato’s and thyme sprig. Pretty. The presentation is great, but all the steak was under cooked. There was manager but she was very busy with other problems. Seems like a few tables with problems were keeping manager occupied. Never checked on table, which is a disappointment.
I had gnocchi as entree. The pesto way too strong and the morels should be sliced. The sushi was very popular at our table. Gone in no time and lots of compliments. The lamb lollipop appetizer would be better without the adobo paste which is a shame for good lamb. We ordered the fried rice which went untouched, so I suspect that the rice, which I didn’t try, was not extra tasty.
Three desserts. Yep. Three. One of which is cheesecake. The other two choices, I don’t even remember. No one at our table was inspired to order dessert, which was a big surprise.
All in all, the service was very good. The meat quality is outstanding. The recipes need a little review - pesto waaaaaay too sour, good lamb ruined by adobo paste. The meat could have used a little seasoning before grilling. The beverage refresh could have been a lot better. I know this restaurant is very popular and everyone had high expectations. I would not go back for myself, but guests were very impressed with the location and ambience.

My boyfriend & I were so excited to finally try out Set Steak & Sushi to celebrate our anniversary & we had the worst experience ever. I dislike writing bad reviews especially because this restaurant looks so nice & classy, but we spent close to $350 only to receive the worst service ever & food was so disappointing to us. The restaurant was not that busy for the service to be bad. When we first sat down they took forever to bring us our water, then we placed our order. After we had asked for some drinks & our drinks never came. We had to ask the lady to remove them because we never got them & she said she will have someone bring them but we were already so over it.
We asked multiple times when our food would come out & they would tell us it should be out shortly. We waited so long for our food that when they brought us our steak set it was all cold and the flavor was so off, potatoes were cold, the sushi rolls were okay. We never received refills for our water, we didn't even eat the steak because it was just cold and didn't taste like anything. We hate wasting food but we were so disappointed & the time to get our food took so long that we just wanted to go home.

We travel and eat out a lot and this was way overpriced for what you get. My husband's $38 lobster tail upcharge made us laugh bc it was miniature in size - we've never seen lobster so small. On a good note, the service and Baby Maker drink was great. Just not worth the $350 we spent for 2 drinks, pork chops, a Caesar salad with chicken, and coffee and a dessert. Was disappointed bc we love finding new placed to eat and share on our FB travel page.

I have so many bad things to say about this place I don’t even know where to start. First off, if you’re coming for quality of food, avoid this place at all costs.
The food: The steaks were poorly cooked and come out cold. They were cooked unevenly , half raw and half over cooked, the grey band was noticeable from Costa Mesa. The Cesar salad tasted like it was from a bottle and had the oceans salt in it.
The service: Dear god, we informed them we had a special occasion, came in at 9:30. Took them 45 minutes to ask us what we wanted to eat, then after we placed the order 15 min later they told us they were out of the fish. It took the steaks an hour and fifteen minutes to come out and they came ice cold. Then we waited another 45 minutes for the check to come. If the place was busy I would totally understand and say I get it, but it was basically empty there was maybe 4-5 tables dining in the entire place. The waitress was so rude for no apparent reason and just sucked at her job. I get it , being a waitress especially in Newport is hard, but we were nothing but respectful and polite and she returned the favor by being atrocious at her job. Regardless of your situation you need to be a pro, and she was far from it.
Ambiance: They played horrible music obnoxiously loud the entire time. People sit and constantly take pictures non stop with the flash I guess for some clout.
Overall for a 400$ bill, you got food worth 10$ and service I imagine you get at a prison. I wouldn’t dine back at this place if they paid me to go there. Avoid it at all costs there are plenty of nice places to go. From the second we met the hostess till we left my party and I were in disbelief. We thought this was a respectable establishment.

honestly as good as the food was, paying $45 for valet (after validation) just kills the experience. granted after dropping $800+, it's like what's another $45, but it's the principle. tons of other good places to eat where you don't need to pay that to park.

Went to SET for a birthday brunch for two. We were seated at the same time as a group of 6 girls. The girls got their orders taken and.got their drinks and we waited over 30 minutes and received no service. We decided to leave. On the way out I notified the host who then notified the manager. The manager tried to make up for it but we were already annoyed and left. I've read other reviews and others have had the same experience. I had high expectations on this place but left disappointed. Will not be going back.

As native chicagoans who are food-obsessed (and used to having a ton of great restaurants at our doorstep), SET is one of our favorite restaurants that we have come across after living in Orange County for 5 years. Every experience has been amazing thanks to excellent service from Michael both times we’ve dined there, and the food is incredible! Highly recommend the PNB roll and the Surf n Turf roll, and you can’t go wrong with the filet. The mushrooms are amazing and we also loved the steak fried rice. But truly, the service and laughs that Michael provided us both meals were the icing on the cake. Highly recommend!!

If you enjoy wasting your time, then this is the place to be for a 2 hour dinner! The ambiance and decor were lovely. It's very peaceful because the wait staff is no where to be found so service will leave you alone the whole night. The food is really good if you enjoy over cooked steak but the potatoes were the highlight of the night. This place has a lot potential to be a great restaurant if they hire all new staff and chefs!
Forgot about desert which was the best part. They gave us complementary dessert which was very kind of them. It was "the wave" a pineapple upside down cake with passion fruit sorbet which was really good but you can get that at Thrifty from your local Rite Aid.
All jokes aside this place is a joke. Everything is over priced and mediocre at best. We had to wait 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated in a half empty restaurant. It took 15 minutes for the waitress to take our order and then another 50 minutes for the food to come. For the steak set, we asked for medium rare and got medium-well. So if you want medium rare ask for your steak to be cooked rare. I recommend getting the crispy potatoes because you can't really mess that up. The service was so bad that we had to ask the bus boy to call our waitress over because she was no where to be found.
This was definitely an experience and not a good one. I do not recommend anyone coming here unless you want to waste your money and time. I do not write a lot of reviews but I did take the time to write this one because of how bad everything was.

Absolutely horrible service, will never return.
Having to beg for a 2nd cocktail, ordering mystery sushi, would never host my corporate events here! tall larger blonde seemed annoyed with our table. Will be interesting once the excitement of this place dies down how they will survive. I am not the first to have these issues either. Take your events elsewhere.

I'm so bummed. I wanted to celebrate my birthday here and had been anticipating going here with my friends to celebrate. I had made reservations about a month in advance, and had been calling every day (several times a day) to try and modify my reservation and add 2 ppl for over a week. All I ever got was a damn machine. I left voicemails and no one bothered to return my call. It wasn't until 2 days before I saw an option to email and FINALLY they responded and told me they are overbooked and cannot accommodate 2 more people. I responded back and they ignored me. Tried calling back again the next day and finally someone answered me around 530 saying the same thing. Was told they were overbooked and don't do parties of 6 or more over the phone anyway. Excuse me?? Your website ONLY allows for up to 6. So how do parties over 6 book then?? Then was told any cancellations go immediately to hotel guests only, so I'm out of luck, "sorry". So now I'm screwed when I got no response from them and horrible customer service and I didn't even get to go.
Would also like to note, went on their site AFTER cancelling and noticed they still have reservations available through the night for parties of 1-6 from 5p-930p. So you cannot accommodate 2 more ppl on an existing reservation? Make it make sense.

Had an amazing time celebrating my birthday here. Loved the salmon with cilantro rice and the steak fried rice. Both must get orders. Service was impeccable. Will definitely be back.

Overall so vibey and fun. BUT customer service and food need to improve. We got the nigiri chef box but they tasted like pieces we could get at supermarket and the sides arrived 20 mins after our final main dish was brought out. They should get a nice review from Hillstones on how to serve and up their customer service lol. GM was attentive but was more of a recovery to the situation. Waitresses need work and food. Cautious if you’re a foodie

It is truly unfortunate that we decided to spend our special night of our 5th yr anniversary here and it was a huge let down. It was all hype and the quality of the food and service did not live up the basic standard of the fine dining!
Lack of training in the staff was obvious! Hostess sat us without acknowledging the anniversary occasion and no menus. Server had no clue, barely showed up to the table and did not have adequate menu knowledge, each course forgot to mark the table with proper silverware and served us the $200 steak without steak knives - $27 old-fashioned with no twist, cherry or any garnish just plain. Claimed to be a “steak house” but couldn’t even get the medium temperature right and obviously our server was no where to be found to correct the issue. Sat at 8pm on the patio left at 10pm and saw our server twice only! There were 4 tables all night on the patio with plenty of empty tables so you know that it is all imaginary hype to make those tables unavailable for an online reservations. Waited more than 20 minutes after entrée, no one showed up to clear the table or check on us, had to get up and asked another server to close us out without having dessert. One of the worst dining experiences in OC. If you are charging prices, at least train your staff with on basic hospitality and customer service rules. $31 valet ?! What a joke and waste of time !

Update: We decided to give SET another shot after our initial visit. I'm glad we did because this is definitely going to be our annual anniversary spot. Our overall experience was amazing; from our server (Mike), our food, the aesthetics of the restaurant, everything was perfect. Mike was so welcoming and always came to our table with a smile. My boyfriend got the 12oz Westholme ribeye with the bone marrow add on and he said it was the best steak he's had. I tried some and it literally melted in your mouth it was so good. We enjoyed everything we had, but we HIGHLY recommend the PNB roll and the westholme ribeye.
There is street parking available, but it's only for two hours so be mindful of that!
Old review: My boyfriend booked a reservation for 7 PM at Set for our anniversary, but our check-in experience was disappointing. Despite reserving 15 days in advance, we faced a few issues:
- Upon arrival, we were informed of parties ahead of us (the amount of parties was not stated), limited space due to patio closure, and the promise of a text when our table was ready.
- about 35 minutes later (around 7:35-40 PM), my boyfriend asked for an update and were told there were still 5 parties ahead of us.
- 5 minutes after that encounter (around 7:45 PM), I asked for a time estimate and was told a vague wait time of at the least 30 minutes or more. The hostess then states "I don't know if anyone told you, but you can also sit at the sushi bar right now." To our frustration, we learned about the immediate availability at the sushi bar 40 minutes into our wait.
- Disheartened by the lack of communication, we decided to leave without being seated even 50+ minutes post-reservation.
This experience questions the reliability of reservations at Set and suggests that booking a reservation does not guarantee you'll be seated at that time (or anywhere near that time which is what we experienced).
Suggestions for improvement include providing estimated wait times upon arrival if you’re going to make reserved guests wait, promptly offering alternative seating options (at the sushi bar or bar) upon arrival, and notifying reserved guests via text or phone call of patio closures affecting seating.
If a restaurant is closing the patio and they know it will affect wait times for RESERVED guests, please text them in advance as soon as you know so that the parties will make necessary adjustments. If we'd known that our reservation time would be delayed and would be waiting over an hour after our reservation, we would have gone somewhere else immediately.
While acknowledging the restaurant's newness and previous reviews, their restaurant has A LOT of room to grow. Our disappointment leads us to not recommend this restaurant solely based on this experience alone.
Set has potential for growth, but it's crucial to address these issues for a smoother dining experience.

The service and ambiance of the restaurant are amazing! However, for sushi, it's next to average. I've gone to both high end, and mom & pop sushi places, yet felt this was very underwhelming. The flavor combination of the rolls didn't really go well together, especially in hand with the bitter pickled ginger. We also dealt with an insanely strong fish smell inside the restaurant the whole time we were seated. It was quite unpleasant and my husband and I really didn't enjoy that. I feel I've had better experiences food and ambiance wise at Sushi Roku, Nobu, Sea Butter, etc. Fortunately, the service we got was exceptional! Also note that even with parking validation and you valet, it's $15.

5 stars for everything. I chose this restaurant for my Valentines dinner because it has a beautiful garden dining area. Staffs were very friendly. I ordered Lamp Lollipops, Baked Scallops Dynamite, Spicy Grilled Octopus, and Tomato Burrata salad. Everything was amazing. My Valentines dinner was perfect with no complaint. Thank you.

I was pretty excited to give this place a try and even more so when I couldn't get a weekend reservation for several weeks! My reservation was at 830, I didn't get seated until after 9pm (mind you they told me it would be a 10-15 min wait). We sat down, but no menus were given to us, but we were approached by the "server assistant" who took our drink orders(and then we didn't see him the rest of the night). Our main server was being shadowed by another server, which was fine, however we hardly saw them all night. Without making this a novel, we didn't get our drinks for another 30 min after we ordered, nor did we get our menus until about 930. The food was great, the service was AWFUL even though the staff was friendly. They tried to do right by comping me a round of drinks, but the idea wasn't to save money, the idea was to have a great experience and unfortunately, that was not the case. Food is worth a try, but plan to be here for 3 hours

Disappointed in the service. Our server was extremely slow and they weren’t even busy. We had to wait 30 mins to be seated with a reservation. Restaurant atmosphere was great but the service made the experience unenjoyable.

They sat us down an hour after our reservation. We were 8, We were thinking they were going to take care of us right away, it took over half hour for us to start getting our drinks and only half of the table got them and 2 out of 5 were wrong. We had to ask twice again to get the other drinks. Food was good but with the terrible service with the drinks and no one coming by for long periods of times it did not taste that good, but I honestly think the terrible service made the food the same. Very disappointed , been there before with better results.

We arrived early for our 9pm reservation we made weeks in advance to grab a drink at the hotel bar. For starters, we weren’t sat until after 9:30pm. We then sat at our sad table for over 30 minutes without a server, a menu, or any water. After asking a bus boy and another server to please send a server over, a lanky manager walked over in a suit to assure us that we’d have a server immediately and offered us a round of drinks. Another 20 minutes went by with no server. We once again requested someone on the wait staff to send someone over with menus or water. Finally a server came over and she was lovely. But by the time she got there we were starving, parched and the restaurant was practically closing. If I owned this establishment I’d fire the coward manager that never came back to our table after promising service and not delivering. They ended up comping us a round of drinks and a dessert that looked like it came out of a Doctor Seuss story. Tomahawk was good, but I have no intention of paying for anything at this restaurant ever again.

I visited this place with high expectations, especially since it's known for sushi. Unfortunately, the food fell short of my expectations. The limited options for sushi left me wanting more variety, and the flavors and freshness didn't quite meet the standards I expect in sushi. The overall taste did not live up to the reputation this place carries on instagram.

The food is disgusting.. I was really excited after seeing the post pop up on social media because the presentation looked great but I was heavily disappointed after trying this place out. I ordered a variety of different entrees and appetizers but nothing was good. I’d recommend going anywhere but here trust me…

I had one of the oddest experiences I’ve ever had in what I thought was a luxury hotel. I’ve been to Pendry’s in other cities before and had amazing service. However, I went to Set with a friend last night a little after eight. We walked in to a bar with about a dozen seats- 10 were taken and the two other seats weren’t together. We asked if they could seat us for cocktails at the tables in the bar- ALL of which were empty. The hostess told us they were fully booked and no, we could only have cocktails if we stood at the bar. She then went on to tell us two more times how booked they were (there must be a lot of late night diners because the entire restaurant looked pretty empty. I said that we had wanted a table for 30 minutes to have a cocktail. By the time she would consider seating us we were so disappointed in her attitude that we left. Also, the decibel levels of the music were quite high- maybe they were trying to make it sound lively in the mostly empty restaurant? We love the restaurants at VEA and as someone who lives nearby we had high hopes for this place, but my friend and I agreed that we won’t be back- our husbands would be even more disappointed than we were.

We had really high expectations based on feedback from our friends. Since we just got married 5 days ago, we wanted to have a celebratory dinner, and our friend recommended SET, who also joined us.
It’s located inside Pedry. At first glance, everything looks beautiful and visually stunning. Our experience started off well. Our host seated us outside. Our waitress immediately greeted us and offered suggestion on cocktails, which was all good. (Baby maker, yuzutopia)
We were accidentally given an old menu with entrees that was no longer offered. Simple mistake. We ordered our appetizers, all sushi rolls and spicy octopus. They tasted great and came out in a timely matter.
Here’s where things start to go downhill. After our appetizers were served, it took an additional 50 mins for our entrees to arrive. The waitress never came and gives us an update. The GM happened to walk by and asked how we were doing. We informed them of the long wait and he said to give them a couple more minutes. When the food arrived, the gnocchi was good and hot. The Wagyu steak and fries were cold. Our nigiri set was lukewarm. The GM checked again to see how the food tastes. We unfortunately had to tell him that our entrees were either too cold or/and warm. He immediately took the entrees back. This time, the warm fries and steak were delicious. The sushi trey was underwhelming.
At this point, our waitress finally came to check on us. I want to be clear, this was the first time she checked on us in about an hour.
I think it took about another 25 mins to get our check and we were only able to get it because we had to ask another server to flag our original server down. In the end, our waitress did apologize for the wait.
In their defense, they’re still new and still working the things. We want to give this place another try, but will hold off for the time being considering the cost. There are other restaurants that provide better service and food for the same cost.

Staying at the Pendry and decided to go to SET for dinner. Service was great (shoutout Alexia) but I was disappointed with the food. Maybe I got the wrong things, but the fried rice was more like a risotto with an odd taste to it, and the peking duck was more of a roast duck (no thin crispy skin) and a little over cooked. Vibes are fantastic but if I were to go again I'd stick to sushi and steak.

I've gone three times now. The service is TERRIBLE. The servers are unprofessional, slow and unknowledgeable. I was charged $425 for another table's bill in addition to our bill. The explanation was that their POS system was down. I've given this restaurant enough tries and will not be going back.

The food and service were amazing! The Green Goddess roll deserves an honorable mention. I would go back just for that, but the entire meal was delightful. I was very impressed with their drinks as well.

Pros:
- Great food (oysters, toro toro toro roll, wedge salad, bavette, new york, salmon, PNB roll, truffle mac, bravas, mushrooms, twice-baked potato)
- Extensive bar
- Good atmosphere
Cons:
- Bad Service (restaurant was at no more than 50% capacity)
-10 minutes to be greeted once seated (no menus)
-30 minutes for wine
-40 minutes for cocktails
-Water glasses constantly empty
-Missing proper utensils for starters (cocktail forks and chopsticks)
-No one checked to see if there were issues with starters (missing utensils)
-Empty dishes and cocktail glasses remained on the table after courses were completed
- Valet: $15 (plus tip) even when validated
At most restaurants those wouldn’t be big issues or issues at all, but for the price and brand (Pendry is owned by Montage) it was a let down. Might give it one more try in 6 months to see if kinks are worked out.

The atmosphere is so nice! We got there at 5 when nobody was there and it was the perfect time. Our waitress was super nice. The filet was great (but to share, next time 10 oz.) - also I'd try a different sauce other than chimichirri .. the flight of Kanpachi nigiri was thin & good, we'd get it again. I wouldn't get the bang bang shrimp again because the shrimp was just too big to eat easily.
The blue wave pineapple upside down cake was our least favorite. We both loved the mashed potatoes. The rigatoni was spicy, but good.. very slippery & wet- so be careful.

This is a brand new high end steak and seadfood restaurant in the new Pendry Hotel in Newport Beach. Pendry is the new Island Hotel and they seem to have spend quite a bit upgrading the decor and the ambiance of the hotel. Upon arrival, you will find that unlike Island Hotel, Pendry does not offer self parking and your only option is to Valet. Valet is $30, but with validation from front desk, the price drops to $15.
You have to walk past the hip and trendy lobby bar to get the the SET restaurant. Inside is dark but chick, and the outside where we were seated is very pretty with about 25 Serena and Lilly lights hanging off of 3-4 expansive trees, making the outside very nice during the night. So I recommend you ask for outside seeing if you are going to this place at night. They have a nice cocktail menu with all cocktails priced at $19, and beers at $9. There is a $4 up charge if you change the brand of alcohol in the coktail.
Lots of great appetizers on the menu. We tried the tuna pizza, which was delish, the grilled octopus, which was also great but there were way more potatoes that octopus on the plate, the caesar salad with the gigantic croutons and the tomato and burrata salad, both of which were average. We also tried two of their sushi rolls, inlcuding the toro toro toro. They are $19 each and very good. Afterwards, we wished we had only ordered sushi rolls there. For mains, we had their bone-in NY steak with Bernaise sauce (which is $9 add). The steak as cooked to perfection and very tender. We also had the pasta alla vodka, the side of mushrooms that came with a raw egg on the top, and their steak fried rice, which came in a hot pot but was kind of disappointing. Overall the food is a solid 4.5, although a little pricey for what you get. The ambiance is a solid 5 star, which is expected for this high end hotel right by Fashion Island. The most disappointing element of the experience was the service. Although our server was super nice and friendly, and so was the host that sat us down. The service was super slow. We had to wait a boot 15-20 mins for our initial drinks to arrive and then another 20 mins for our second cocktails which ended up arriaving AFTER we got the main meal delivered, so instead of having win with my Steak, I was drinking my $19 Negroni with my steak!. They also refilled our water just once during our whole stay there. On the plus side, they brought some sort of a mango icecream cake for a birthday celeb at the table, and everyone seemed to enjoy it very much. So all in all, food is good except a bit over priced, ambiance is great if you sit outside, service is definitely not 5 star...

This is the perfect place to celebrate a special occasion, as the atmosphere under all the lit lanterns creates a special ambience. A special thank you to Vivienne the receptionist at the Elwood Club; she displayed exceptional effort and got us a table for my birthday dinner. In addition to the wonderful atmosphere, the food was flavorful, fresh and healthy. I enjoyed the beet tartare and the P&N sushi roll; but my other guests raved over the Peking duck and the lamb lollipops. Marlon was our waiter; he was very helpful and knowledgeable about the menu and was able to suggest some great options that we enjoyed.

We had an excellent meal last night at Set Steak and Sushi in Newport Beach. The food and cocktails were creative and delicious, with a wonderful presentation at table. The ambiance was fresh and hip, without being over the top. And the service was excellent. We particularly admired our server, Ali, who was very knowledgeable, and made perfect recommendations for our group. Highly recommend the entire experience.
