My first visit to Katsuya and it was a very pleasing experience. We were early for our reservations so we sat by the bar and ordered drinks. My lychee martini was the best I've ever had! I drank it so quickly and wished I had slowed down to savor it.
We were seated soon after that in the main and more elegant dining room. I didn't realize there's another dining room that's more casual, and I'm glad we weren't seated there.
Our waiter, Anthony, was very experienced, as he's been with the restaurant 12 of the 14 years it had been at the Hollywood location. We were impressed with his service.
For appetizers, we ordered the roasted the roasted Brussels sprouts (quite salty) and the rock shrimp (generous, delicious and hearty).
For the main course, I ordered the Tomahawk short ribs and my friend ordered the grilled salmon. It was quite good.
We ordered a side of grilled forest mushroom, even though the salmon did come with some. I wish we were offered a side of rice or some starch to go with our entrees.
As an aside, I have to mention the bathrooms. I didn't take any pics because it was incredibly dark in there. Like unusually dark and dungeon-like.
Overall, this was an exquisite dining experience.

First time trying their happy hour here.
Just started with a Ceviche Lettuce Cups. One of the Ingredients includes “ crispy rice noodles”. The dish comes and we noticed this ingredient isn’t there. We kindly ask the server and they went to ask the kitchen staff. It’s kind of sad that a high end restaurant like this would run out of such a basic ingredient. If I was the manager then I would never allow this to happen. Also their website says that this location isn’t open but we happened to walk by and it was so we decided to try it.

After three years away, I decided to revisit Katsuya, despite my mixed feelings from my first experience. My friend couldn't stop raving about their A5 Wagyu fried rice, so I felt compelled to give it another shot. I started with the yellowtail sashimi, which was excellent—a fantastic cut of fish that I truly enjoyed. I’d rate the rice a solid 4 out of 5. I devoured it all, and while I might be a bit biased, it was delicious; I just wished it had arrived hotter and looked a bit more appealing on the plate.
The atmosphere at Katsuya is fantastic, making it a perfect spot for a first date or a night out with friends. The DJ was spinning some great tunes, and the staff were attentive and friendly, adding to the overall positive experience.

We went on a Saturday night for dinner and had the tasting experience at 80$ a head. With a side of Edamame peas. The food was delicious and took you through their menu ending with a delicious dessert. Would definitely recommend trying this. The staff were lovely and we sat watching the chefs prepare the food. The cocktail menu was great and the restaurant was really buzzing. You need to book a table before. Wine was a bit expensive would be the only criticism

On November 9th, 2024, we had an incredible dining experience at Katsuya Hollywood, and it was all thanks to our server, Luis. Despite the restaurant being packed due to multiple shows in the area, Luis provided top-notch service that truly exceeded our expectations. He was attentive, personable, and managed to make us feel like a priority, even in the midst of such a busy evening. Every question was answered with a warm smile, and he seemed to anticipate our needs before we even had to ask.
Luis’s expertise in the menu was impressive—he offered thoughtful recommendations, and each dish arrived perfectly timed and beautifully presented. His genuine enthusiasm for the food and his dedication to our experience made the evening memorable. We were blown away by how seamless everything felt, despite how busy the restaurant was.
Thanks to Luis, our night at Katsuya Hollywood was flawless. His exceptional service made a busy evening feel relaxed and special. Highly recommend requesting him as your server if you’re visiting—he’ll make your experience unforgettable!

I usually have dined there once a year for many years. I like the decor and the creative aspect of some of the menu items. I usually inquire what sort of oil they use in the deep fryer - the answer was Canola oil. A few years back it had still been Rice Bran oil. Of course, Canola oil is by far the cheapest oil that can be used in the kitchen because it is highly processed, washed with chemicals to remove the smell, taste and color. This treatment with Hexane really upsets my stomach. So, not only was anything deep-fried off the menu for me, but I also found out that most meat and fish items (such as the Hamachi color) where prepared with Canola oil. What a shame .. just to save some money while otherwise using top ingredients. It is the wrong place to save money.
The music was rather loud ... I mean, the large dinning room had maybe 6-7 tables occupied. So, why crank obnoxious music ... it is not going to create the "cool" atmosphere. I did request the music to be turned down, but that had little effect. Why is having to shout at your dinning partner considered a great experience?
Well ... it was probably my last visit ... sad to say.

My best friend and I came here for the first time tonight during a bachelorette weekend trip. We ate delicious food and had a wonderful server who gave us recommendations and explained the menu options to us. We ultimately decided on lobster tempura for a starter, sushi set for our meal, and mochi donuts and miso cake for dessert. our bill came.to about $215. The food was so fresh, the sushi was silky and delicious. I have no complaints whatsoever. After finishing our meal I checked the reviews to see what amazing things people had to say and was surprised to see the most recent reviews were poor. 10/10 would happily dine here again.

**Rating: ★★☆☆☆**
What a disappointment. The restaurant was practically empty, with only five tables occupied, yet the service was abysmal. Our waiter forgot more than half of our order, rarely checked in, and left us sitting there wondering where our food was. To make matters worse, the girls' bathroom was flooded, and there was only a single bathroom available on our side of the restaurant, which is just unacceptable for a supposedly high-end establishment. For the price and reputation, we expected much better. Sadly, the lack of attention and poor facilities ruined what could have been an enjoyable meal.

Overall a decent place. I won’t return. There’s a bogus 5% workers comp surcharge? I own a business and it’s the obligation of the owners to pay that and it should be upfront on the menu not snuck in on the bill last minute. I’m sure this will never change because people just overlook it or are to afraid to say something.
I had that fee taken off and have the additional 5% to the server.

There isn't much at Katsuya that would deserve a second tasting, were I for some reason, against my better judgment, return.
Me and my partner tried the tasting set, and while the Cod and dessert were alright, the rest simply didn't provide an artistic value or monetary value. On one hand, there didn't seem to be anything that was truly unique to Katsuya. On the other, for the price they ask, I'd expect a bit more of everything, or at least some sort of unifying vision in the dishes.
As it stands, you can probably go to any Japanese place nearby and get a similar experience at 2/3 the cost, at least. There's a Ramen spot by a threatre, Totoyama, go there instead. The staff is nicer and you've just as nice a selection, and you won't be squinting in the dark trying to read the menu.
Also one of the men preparing the sushi was drinking quite a bit. You can decide if that bothers you.

When we were leaving the waiter ran out to the street as we were getting in a uber to complain about the tip. When we came back into the restaurant he began shouting at us and it almost turned into a physical fight. The manager apologized but still charged us for the meal. A complete nightmare.
After emailing them they said the waiter was still working there and asked why I didn’t follow up sooner. Also the food wasn’t good and super over priced

We came out of the way as this restaurant was so highly acclaimed and well rated. Could be the time of day, we were last seating at the bar on Thursday night. But still, our experience was not good.. no one greeted us at the door, seemed closed actually. Lighting at bar was poor. Waiter/ bartender Rico was nice and friendly. There was supposed to be all day Happy Hour at bar all day in April as advertised, but apparently that menu wasn't ready yet (April 18). The prices are high end, but the sushi was absolutely mediocre. Ordered Sashimi Moriawase set, only the uni was acceptably fresh and well presented 8$ miso soup felt like a self serve bowl from Japanese cafeteria. Rolls were very average and nothing special. If this was just your local sushi shop it would be fine, but for a restaurant with the repute of Katsuya.. unacceptable.. even if it was just before closing on a non busy night. Clearly management have stopped trying.. quite disappointed.

Food quality and taste is awesome! It's very special and I could not get enough of their Lychee Martini. I only expected to hear more culturally contemplative musics based on the atmosphere of Katsuya, but there was this playlist loudly playing from punk rock to gang rap! 😄 It's ok though!
it's Hollywood after all!
We were a group of 4 and I think we ordered and shared multiple different dishes which I think is the best strategy to experience the most out of this place. This sour sweet ice cream was the good ending.

Avoid katsuya at all costs. this restaurant puts their staff (particularly young female workers) through what is a demeaning and dangerous work environment. My younger sister was employed here for 4 months, during which she was verbally assaulted, physically threatened, and made to feel small. She was harassed by an older male member of staff, and when she continuously reported the behavior nothing was done. This man still works at Katsuya and poses a threat to the girls he works with everyday. It’s truly disgusting. Do not support this business.

WOW, our 1st time here, the food & service were off the charts, and we'll definitely be back. The flavors and sauces were incredible, my son ordered most of the food, so I can't tell you exactly what we ate. The popcorn shrimp was amazing, the cut rolls were absolutely delicious, and everything was tremendous. This ain't your parents' sushi bar, it's very upscale and expensive.
Only thing that left a bad taste was the 5% LA surcharge, which the restaurant owner passes their employees' health care onto their customers. Elections have consequences.

I ate here with my family before we went to a musical next door at the Pantages. I’ve been here several times and they never disappoint. We started with baked crab hand rolls, spicy tuna on crispy rice, and crispy brussels sprouts. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone. My daughters loved the hand rolls and crispy Brussels sprouts, but weren’t fans of the spicy tuna on the crispy rice. The crispy rice is highly dependent on the jalapeño to balance the flavor, so if you don’t like spicy food, it might not be for you. I highly recommend all of them. I just wish the hand rolls were a bit larger.
My daughters had the miso soup and enjoyed it.
Afterwards, we had the corn crunch rolls, Katsuya roll, and shrimp tempura roll. I’m not a fan of the Katsuya roll, but it’s okay. The other rolls were very good. The aioli sauce on the corn crunch is delicious.
They are very good at making sure to get your food out quickly if they know you need to make a show time.

This was such a fun place to grab dinner with my friends. We all did the tasting menu and then added a few additional items. The meal overall felt a little pricy but for the quality and amount of food, I think it was well worth the price we paid. The food was phenomenal, all the wait staff were super attentive and friendly, and the dining experience will surely be remembered. I look forward to coming back for more meals and to try more of the menu. Valet parking is available but I didn’t utilise it this time

Haven't been here in a while with my family, and this time, the experience wasn't the best as far as sitting and lighting, that is why I gave the atmosphere such a low rating. We were here for my daughters 29th birthday. They put our party of 8 1/2 in a dark corner with super dem lighting. I had to use my Samsung S22 to light up 🔦 the table for us to read the menu. 😆 Don't get me wrong, the service was outstanding as before. Thanks to Jeewon, the server, and others. The food was amazing, I totally recommended the fried rice with wagyu. The sushi 🍣 is delicious 😋. The picture is a burning mandarin 🍸🔥.

Beautiful place, i had no idea it was in Hollywood,
But service was slow, we didn’t order much because we weren’t that hungry but even then, it took a long time to bring out all the food, when we wanted more water we had to call the server several times before we could get some, at some point we thought they had forgotten about us.
The edamame was really good, but besides that, food was alright, which is not what you expect in an upscale place like this.

The food is very good, and about what you’d expect for the price, but it’s hard to get a good selection if you’re eating solo. As a couple or small group you’d have more choice without breaking the bank.
Service on arrival made me think I should’ve reserved, before I was taken into an empty restaurant on a Sunday night. Unnecessarily stand-offish.
I had a seat at the kitchen which added to some of the atmosphere but tempered by the cold welcome.

Sloppy and uninteresting for the price. Given how empty it was, the service could have been a lot better. Rolls were visually messy and rice didn’t hold together well in the nigiri. I absolutely love Katsuya! I’ve been there countless times, and I have to say, you’re paying more for the atmosphere. If you’re looking for something a little cheaper and more laid-back, I highly recommend The Little IZAKA-YA by KATSU-YA and The ZAKA-YA by KATSU-YA. The food is jsut as fantastic (if not better) and the prices are much more reasonable. Back to Katsuya… While I do enjoy the main dishes, the appetizers are the real star of the show. My go-to appetizers are the spicy tuna crispy rice, popcorn shrimp, yellowtail jalapeño, albacore with crispy onions, baked crab handroll, crispy brussels sprouts, and shishito peppers. As for mains, I can’t get enough of the nigiri (it’s super fresh but sadly doesn’t come with wasabi on the inside), sashimi, Miso Cod, Whole Tai Snapper, and fried rice. Overall, I’m counting down the days until I can go back and indulge in all my favorites at Katsuya.

The freshest, best cooked fish and steak I've ever eaten. On the Saturday we visited, there was a live DJ. Server was incredibly nice and gave excellent recommendations. The restaurant is pretty pricey - budget around $150/person and you will eat very comfortably.
To the owner: Please don't take the donuts off the menu!! My girlfriend and I LOVED them. Absolutely fantastic night cap I think is worth holding onto.

Went last night for dinner with my family, to begin the attention to customers was top tier , Luis our server was on it all night, refilled our drinks and we didn’t even notice , I asked for certain restrictions due to an allergy and I was not disappointed, I paid close attention to the chiefs and notified that on their down time they never looked at their phones , they kept their stations clean..afterall they are the face of the restaurant. The manger gave us a discount and I thought that was super sweet on her end, we spent $195 but added a $55 tip because as someone who works for industry … as a server myself ..i know what’s it’s like to splits tips, we wanted to make sure everyone got a fair share! Thanks to everyone from that night shift!!

I've tasted various Japanese style food in various places with different pricing options: "Great location" That's the only great part for our dinner here. You would expect much more when you spend at this price range.
Let me put it this way:
I think the money could be better spent on taking Uber to Little Tokyo to dine in some traditional Japan restaurant and Uber back. And the experience could be better as well.

Sushi had a Hollywood tax on it. Overpriced for what you get. Music was loud on a Friday night. Was practically yelling at my date, and could barely hear my waitress. She had a mask on to muffle her voice even more.

Food was fantastic. Drinks were spot on. And service was great. Luis and Chelsea were on point tonight to take care of me and my group tonight before going to watch Jesus christ super star. I will be back for something new

I am still trying to wrap my.mind around the acrylic blocks capturing knives when you first walk in. Everything we had was absolutely delicious, especially the fried cauliflower

Stopped by the bar after a show. Kitchen was already closed but we were able to get one drink and they allowed us to stay. Beautiful place

I had an incredible time here. The food and drinks are very high quality, but the highlight was definitely the service. Silver at the bar was extremely knowledgeable and went above and beyond (as simple as bringing me hot water when I mentioned that my apartment had been cold). I'll definitely be back!

Katsuya Hollywood has been one of my go to places for years and everything is always on point! Especially their fried rice with wagyu!

Great service, fast kitchen, good food. Tried a few rolls that were good. Wagyu Gyoza has a strong black garlic that is a unique flavor if you're looking for something different. Short Rib melted in your mouth. Veggie tempura pieces are large and needed a little salt but cooked perfectly. Menu highlight is definitely the baked crab handroll. Top knotch waiter. Will try again hopefully soon.

We arrived at 725pm Restaurant was only like a third full and stayed that way. We ordered a special appetizer of Scallops at $27. We were told 4 pieces. When it attived, they were small scallops in circumference and worse, they had been cut in half, so there were 4 very thin pieces of scallops. We felt this was a high price for 2 small scallops total. The fish entry course was very small and the miso soup had one tiny piece of tofu in it but again it was a small cup of soup. THey brought us another scallop dish no charge. I have not been here since covid. It has changed. Expensive and small portions Also a 7.5 % add on the cover rising costs. We left at 850. Valet parking was $16 for the first 2 hours, then went to $2o over that. When we got out there, valet said $20. We said we have not been here even 90 mins He said ok $16. Now we are sure we wont be back. Food was good but overpriced

I got 1 salmon roll that was 12 dollars. It was not spectacular for that price, but I can acknowledge it was fresh. The service was great and the restaurant is gorgeous.

Absolutely delicious. Service was outstanding from a friendly guy named Cam.
Seared bluefin tuna was great, chef's special baked crab handroll as well. Diver scallops, however, were underwhelming with very little flavor. Mochi donut for dessert was undercooked and chewy, but tasty.

Upscale place.Very dark (had to use phone to read menu). Great starters. Not bad sushi but I had better. Service was good - not great. Very expensive final bill with some "optional" surcharge added (really?). DJ was running - my son wanted a song played for his bday - but was not on DJ's computer (nowadays isn't anything few clicks away online)? I can see this place being a special occasion thing if you like the ambience.

(Hollywood) Excellent restaurant... Food outstanding ... spot on service... But the noise was unbearably loud. Understand that Katsuya is a very "in" venue // rightfully so // ... Just be prepared for NO NORMAL COVERSATION.

The food was delicious, the service was fast and efficient. The room is so noisy that we couldn't talk in normal voice, had to almost shout. One table away a couple had brought their large dog, had him sitting beside them and were feeding from their plate. Not a guide dog. YUCK!

Great place, great food and service but idk something about the low tables, I understand what they are going for but the tables sit a bit low. I’m 5’9 and my knees would bump here and there, I can only imagine someone taller. Vibe is great for an early dinner and location is also good for nearby attractions. Recommend it if you are nearby. Parking lot is literally a few feet away if you want to skip on valet.

Food/Service definitely never disappoints. First time visiting this location. Great Dining experience!

Looks fancy, welcoming, but it's way too pricey for what you get. 1 sushi of 6 small pieces, 2 handrolls, 1 beer and 1 glass of wine 86dlls. We had to go somewhere else afterwards cause you're left hungry and don't want to make it to a hundred.

Not as forward-memorable as I'd expected. But the Katsuya Roll is something else, though.

Papparazzi outside, this place is legit. We dined around the bar and got the ultimate experience. Such a nice night out.

Still a gold standard for sushi in Los Angeles, and the customer service is beyond spectacular. Over and above in every way.

Just had dinner with the family and the wait staff blew us away with their hospitality and friendliness.
This is our favorite place to take the kids! Loved the gyoza and their friend rice!
Such a great experience, thank you!!!

Busy, fun, boozey. Plates only take 10-15 to come out so no need to order everything at once. Cucumber cocktails went down a great. Onion sashimi was phenomenal, as was the wagyu fried rice.
