The hotel experience was absolutely excellent. The smaller format (only 8 rooms) really makes you feel special. The staff are all extremely friendly and accommodating, and frequently went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was perfect.
The cafe has a lovely atmosphere and delicious drinks and pastries. For lunch, I highly recommend the blue crab roll. The yuzu soda is made fresh to order, and blew me away.
For dinner, we tried the Dine LA 4 course menu, which was seriously fantastic. Each course is better than the last, and the ribeye was to die for.
Thank you so much to the whole Kodō staff for treating us so well and making sure our little arts district date night became a truly memorable get away!

i think this place knocks it out of the park on the aesthetic. ive been here a few times and the service is mid at best but who cares, its a coffee shop. their hot drinks when served to stay, is a cute little experience since they serve it in proper dishware versus a paper cup (at least in my experience). the sesame latte was sooooo good! the downside was my most recent experience, i got matcha drink and it was just not great. it was like pure milk. you can tell in the picture my drink is like a faiiiiint green. maybe thats just bc of my drink of choice (the coconut matcha drink) but def wasnt a fan fave.

I am a Japanese, well-traveled, multicultural, Elite Yelper foodie. Kodo restaurant is my first Japanese-American fusion restaurant I’ve ever been pleased with. I usually don’t enjoy fusion restaurants because it just means it’s not authentic and won’t be quality, but this one was unique yet still authentic blending Japanese food with American in a complimentary twist. I stayed at this hotel in their best suite for a fun weekend getaway in LA, so when I found out they had a Michelin star restaurant and Japanese chef downstairs… I had to make a reservation being the foodie that I am. All Japanese are major foodies. Even on our social media we sometimes just would rather post food than selfies of ourselves. The wait time to book for dinner reservations went out three months, but being Japanese I believe they gave me special treatment which was appreciated. And they even brought my food to my room as room service because I was just too tired from my night out at a special holiday party to dine in at the restaurant for dinner as planned. It was so delicious that I also ordered lunch from the restaurant and breakfast from their cafe too! The pasta was my favorite for dinner. The burger was my favorite for lunch. The iced matcha coconut drink & the yuzu pastry were my favorites for breakfast(from the cafe)... so much that I ordered a dozen upon check out to give to family & friends. Kodo(hotel & restaurant & cafe) is Japanese-approved. I will post another review in Japanese as well for Japanese who only speak Japanese soon from my other google account. 🇯🇵🥢

Came to Kodo on Saturday for lunch. My wife had it on her listing of places to try and so glad she wanted to come! The decor and atmosphere was refined and contemporary. Perfect for Japanese food. The food was very well executed! Tasteful and portion was surprisingly decent. Service was very friendly and attentive. Will definitely come back for lunch and now want to try their dinner menu.

Planned a special birthday dinner for my fiancé here. Although the food is good, the service is sadly lacking.
We ordered a nigiri sample, a sashimi sampler, a monkfish liver mousse, and a ribeye. Food in general is great. We were very confused with the monkfish liver mousse, no description and with just chopsticks, do we dip the whole milk toast in?
I did note it was a birthday, no greetings or whatsoever. I hinted to have candles on the dessert for photo. The server missed me and gave 2 candles on each desserts and gave it to each of us… Even if he heard me singing happy birthday to my fiancé, no wish.
It was a little turn off when the vibe is so intimate and perfect for a celebration. Hope the service gets better because the food is great.

The atmosphere here is off the charts, but food - not so much.
My recommendation is to visit just for a cup of matcha. Matcha latte was quite good, I asked for no sugar, but next time I will pair it with plant milk instead of regular milk.
I was excited to try the rice balls and toasts they previously had, but it seems that the menu has changed. Now they serve larger lunch portions, we have tried a Tsukune Burger and a Kaisen bowl. Tsukune Burger was huge and messy and tasted a bit home cooked, it might be appealing to some people. Kaisen bowl was more Poke than Kaisen because fish and omelet were cut into small cubes and heavily marinated.
Overall food didn't leave a good impression but I really enjoyed the space.

Obviously, they need to adjust the price range. I get that they're recreating the Japanese aesthetic cafe in LA, but that doesn’t mean the overall cost of a drink should be almost $10.

My boyfriend and I got the omakase but to be honest it was not worth it, the food tasted great but you can get almost the exact same course by ordering the 10 piece nigiri from the menu for half of the price. The atmosphere is nice but not appropriate for a traditional omakase. Highly recommend, just save your money and skip out on the omakase.

Koto’s take on the traditional chirashi bowl is nothing short of genius. The sashimi cubes are fresh and lightly topped with savory seasonings that elevate the flavors. But it’s the rice infused with delicate nuances, creating a harmonious balance that perfectly supplement the chirashi sashimi. Hands down, this is the best chirashi I’ve ever had, and I’ve sampled it everywhere.
Next up, the Doburi, and I stress "the". Oh, my taste buds rejoiced! The steak was seared to perfection—juicy, tender, and bursting with umami. Each bite was a celebration of craftsmanship, and the satisfaction afterward was unparalleled.
At that point, we couldn’t resist ordering the Salted Salmon and the 7-piece Nigiri set. And the nigiri—oh, the nigiri! Each piece was a miniature masterpiece, but I won’t delve into details; you must experience it for yourself.
Verdict
In summary, Kodo is a culinary haven where flavors soar and creativity knows no bounds. Whether you’re a sushi aficionado or a curious food explorer, this restaurant promises an unforgettable journey. So, don’t miss out—reserve your table. I know I'm coming back tonight.

This cafe shares a space with the lobby of kodo hotel, and is beautiful Japanese minimalism at its peak. That being said, it must get slow because both the lobby reception and cafe barista were looking bored and on their devices when I stepped in. It was a bummer that they were already out of pastries to not have a little sweet something to accompany my usual espresso, so I opted for an oat cortado which was lovely. The coffee and ambiance in their mini outside patio was nice.

Loved stopping by this tiny cafe, such a beautiful interior design. This cafe is a small area in the entrance of their restaurant that has a few chairs. We ordered one yuzu custard pastry (subtle flavor, not very sweet, great texture and flakiness), a hot Amai con panna (a nice cinnamon and cream espresso) and another cold drink I cannot remember the name of (but it is the one pictured here) both drinks were nice but just a heads up they are super sweet. The minimal and sleek interior design is unique and has a few seats. It’s not the type of cafe to sit for a long time, it’s more of somewhere you come for a short visit to be present with a friend and enjoy unique caffeinated cocktails.

My wife and I recently traveled to LA, we picked to come to this restreraunt after a couple of items caught our eyes on the menu. To start the drinks and bar tenders were amazing, for our first couple of bites the Shiso Sea Bream Ceviche paired well the drinks to start. The monkfish liver mousse was a complete surprise lots of flavour and butteriness. For the Omekase set, the Hotate with yuzu was amazing, melting right after it enters your mouth. We also loved the Spicy Tuna Crispy rice as this was a flavor bomb.
The staff were great, bar manager Brent had a awesome conversation around their experience and unique relationships with the distributors. We went back the next night and Yuhi remembered us from the first night, pulled major strings made it happened slid us in and made sure we were taken care of.
The Food brought us here, but the service and flavours brought us back.

I've been wanting to come here for quite some time, so I decided to come with my girl friends for my birthday dinner. Upon arrival, they offer valet parking - otherwise, you're going to have to snag street parking nearby. The entrance as so beautiful and captivating. It felt so serene. Minimalistic, but with modern aesthetics. We were able to sit in the outside patio area. This area seats best for 4-5 people. They also have a private dining area for bigger groups available too. I took a look at the seating inside, which were mainly bar seating and table seatings for 2 options. The table seating for 2 did not look too comfortable, so I'm glad I came with a group instead of a plus one. We ordered the Blue Fin Tuna Crudo, Ponzu Oysters, Sesame Yellowtail Kingfish, Uni-Mentaiko Cream Squid Ink Pasta, and Miso Black Cod. For drinks, we ordered Carajillos, Lychee Martini, and Yuzu Margarita. We were pleased with all of our orders to share amongst the 4 of us. It was the perfect portion to share to try different things. We did order a second order of the yellowtail, since we did enjoy that more than the blue fin. Loved all the flavor from the uni pasta and the cod, but didn't really care for the green pea puree under the fish. All the drinks were great - we ordered 2 each. Jesse was our server that night. He was a delight. It was a slammed night for the bartenders and servers, but he made our evening very pleasant. He did mention that the building will also serve as a small hotel soon, which I thought was very interesting. Definitely recommend trying this spot out!

Kodo is undeniably a top 10 experience in the vibrant Los Angeles food scene, and let me tell you, I've been uncovering some culinary gems lately! So, how did I stumble upon Kodo? TikTok, of course! I've been saving places left and right to see if they live up to the hype, and Kodo? It's the real deal!
The atmosphere at Kodo is nothing short of artwork. They've truly nailed the Japanese art scene motif in their decor. I've always had an appreciation for Japanese decorating style—it's minimalist, cozy, warm, and an art form in itself. Stepping into Kodo, you're greeted by a beautifully done space, and that massive volcanic rock they use as a desk? A showstopper! If Architecture Digest ever reviews restaurant decor, Kodo should be at the top of their list.
Now, let's talk about the food – a solid 10 out of 10! Kudo has effortlessly secured its spot in my top 10 places to eat in Los Angeles. If you're after a sleek and minimalist dining experience for friends or guests, this is the place. I tried multiple dishes, from root chips to oysters, sushi, and risotto, and every single one was exceptional. What sets Kodo apart is their generosity with portions – perfect for sharing without worrying about leaving hungry.
On top of the fantastic food, the staff on my visit were outstanding. They offered great suggestions, were attentive without being overbearing, and as I left, every staff member bid me farewell with a smile and a thank you. My entire experience at Kodo was delightful, and whether you're flying solo or with a group, Kodo is a must-visit destination. Trust me, this is a place you won't regret checking out!

I love Kodo Cafe! I recently went for lunch and the sushi was so fresh and I loved the selection, the outdoor seating was especially nice, but the decor in general is so unique and beautiful it really creates the best atmosphere. My server was especially attentive and knowledgeable. I always order an iced cortado and when she noticed it had a little too much milk she had it remade without me even asking. Love this neighborhood spot and would highly recommend.

The space is really nicely decorated and peaceful. I ordered the black sesame cappuccino and red miso olive cake. The olive cake was delicious and I liked the subtle red miso flavor. However, I’m not sure if they made my drink wrong, but the cappuccino tasted bitter and acidic. I had to ask for sweetener and it still did not taste very good, so I didn’t end up finishing my drink. Perhaps the other coffee drinks are better?

Beautiful place, but food is horrible. Sent almost every dish back. Sushi isn't worth ordering and my main meal was cold but, should have been hot. Service was just as bad. Our server only came to our table twice the entire time, we had to call him over for our check. I would pass on going to this restaurant unless they go under new management get new service and get new cooks.

Have to say I'm somewhat disappointed. It was a Saturday afternoon and quiet in the area. But still kind of hard to find parking since is street parking only. The interior is quite small and not so zen like all the videos I've seen on the Instagram. Guess it was a IG vs reality moment. The outdoor area wasn't opened either.
I ordered the ujikintoki and the coconut matcha. For a $8 matcha I was early expecting much more. It was good, but also very small. I had uji match before at a lower price tag. What disappointed me the most was the coconut matcha. It was a coconut milk foam, which tasted oddly weird. It was sour like the milk went bad. My partner tried it and agreed with me too so it wasn't just me. I was afraid I would get an upset stomach since it tasted VERY abnormal so I told the barista and he said he would make me another drink. So I quickly chose the strawberry matcha which is a bit cheaper. I didn't read the description and didn't realize it was actually strawberry milk. Basically it tasted like binggrae artificial strawberry milk and matcha. Did not enjoy that at all.
Overall nothing here makes me want to go back.

The evening began with a hospitable greeting from the hostess. The interior effortlessly melds Japanese aesthetics with a modern twist. The dimly lit space, adorned with Japanese-inspired decor, was a visual delight. Gray concrete, bonsai trees, high ceilings, warm wooden tones all help to shape the otherworldly ambiance. Whether you're on a date or out with friends, the vibe check is real.
The menu, while promising on paper, left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. The sashimi was fresh, but the lack of creativity in presentation and flavor profiles was apparent. It was good but far from exceptional for raw fish in Los Angeles. I would stick with the warm dishes and even with those you need to be on top of your ordering game. The spicy tuna crispy rice and shishito peppers & potato hash were solid. The crispy, tender chicken pieces of the chicken garaage were seasoned well and paired wonderfully with a dipping sauce that added an extra layer of flavor. I had hoped the prime rib eye would be a highlight and despite its promising appearance, the meat was far from tender bordering on chewiness, and it left me wondering whether it had been undercooked or was the meat just below average quality. The two desserts ordered did manage to end the meal on a slightly higher note though it wasn't enough to fully redeem the earlier shortcomings.
To be fair, I did appreciate the effort put into the presentation and the attentive service. Our server, while not as entertaining as some I've encountered, was still polite and prompt in delivering our dishes. The restaurant's ability to create a captivating atmosphere remains a standout feature, but the true essence of a restaurant lies in its food, and in this aspect it indeed falls short. The dishes lack the finesse, creativity, and flavor harmony that one might expect from a restaurant of this caliber, but it still serves as an appealing spot for those looking to enjoy a visually pleasing ambiance. It's a place where you might find a few savory gems, but overall, it left me craving more consistency and inspiration on the plate. Kodo, you have potential, but for now, you're still a work in progress on the culinary front.

I wanted to really enjoy the experience but service from our particular server was not great. When we asked for his recommendation he just said he likes everything then began to describe every single item. When we received a sushi platter he did not tell us what each nigiri was, the other support service provided better explanation. When we asked the server if we had any other orders that we were still expecting (which we were) he said he believe we received everything. He then blamed that they were short staffed which was a bit rude to his support that gave better service. He then asked if the GM has come by yet then blamed him for not coming by yet. The GM eventually did come by and we told him about the poor service which he acknowledged and gave us a round of sake. I don't blame the restaurant overall for the poor experience but rather our specific server.
The food overall was ok. The California Roll had guacamole on the side for some reason which was weird. The mentaiko pasta didn't have much flavor. The sushi platter was our favorite and ordered twice.

Came to Kodō last night for a special reunion dinner with friends, looking forward to a fancy treat out. Unfortunately we would have been better off going to a cheaper restaurant due to the incredible shocking service we received from server Jesse J. Almost as soon as we were seated we began receiving extremely uncomfortable comments and remarks from Jesse in response to every question we had. For example, my friend asked for shared plates to which he responded “you literally have shared plates in front of you, that is what we use here”. He didn’t offer to grab extras or anything which we found strange. As the night went on he continued to make us feel as though every request was an extreme burden on him even though he rarely checked on our table, to the point we had to flag down another server to order and a manager to receive our check at the end. I won’t get into every instance as it would be too long, but another to touch on was that when sending back an item due to a food allergy that was not listed on the menu, the waiter loudly berated our friend to the point she was so embarrassed she was shaking, as he said repeatedly “this dish is going straight in the trash can then if someone doesn’t eat it.” The most shocking experience came at the end of the night, when we paid. Due to his aggressive attitude we tipped him about 12%, removing the 20% tip he had preselected. Given the amount of money we spent on the bill (almost $250), and rude service we felt 12% was more than generous to provide him. The server checked our bill and came back our the table demanding we explain why we tipped him so low. This was shocking to say the least. We explained it was due to his attitude and he continued to argue for over one minute about his attitude/the tip saying this is his livelyhood and he deserved more money. That alone is enough to appall any customer especially at a fancy restaurant! The icing on the cake was when he finally left our table after emabrassing us further saying “my apologies have a nice day” then muttering “I hope to never see y’all here again” under his breath as he walked away. We of course planned on talking to the manager as this was extremely inappropriate. Upon leaving we saw our waiter talking to the manager and as we walked past said “my manager wants to speak with you.” This was also awkward as we wondered why he told the manager to talk to US? The manager was thankfully very kind and understanding when we explained what happened and said he would be sending the server home. The manager also offered us 50% off our next meal with them if we would come back and said he would serve us personally and make sure that Jesse J. was not scheduled. He even went as far as to offer us a free glass of sake each which was extremely kind. We will be returning to give the restaurant another chance due to how amazing the manager handled the situation, if it wasn’t for him I would give one star but am adding one for his hospitality. I will certainly update this review once we return and have a new experience, but wanted to warn others as to this particular server especially when going to a restaurant of higher caliber such as Kodō. It is a treat to eat out, especially with friends you do not see very often, and it was disappointing to have such an abrasive experience that really did damper the rest of our evening. A note on the food is it was great, especially the oysters. The poke sushi roll was lackluster for the price along with the uni pasta, but overall it was tasty! Just really unfortunate how disrespectful Jesse J was.

Went to Kodō last night with a group of friends, and was really disappointed in our experience. The food was excellent and everyone except our server we were very impressed with. However our server made our experience exceptionally horrible to the point we were even concerned about our physical safety. From our initial interaction with Jesse J. it became a topic of conversation at the table about how uncomfortable he was making us, and how rude he was being when we were asking him for very basic things. Many of us at the table had experience serving, so we were questioning if there was some reason that he may be acting this way towards us.
Every interaction with him was a point of altercation. I will not go into detail on each but I will include a couple of the more impactful here. At one point, one of the items we ordered we had to send back because it contained an ingredient that was not listed on the menu but the orderie was allergic to. We tried to be very polite about the situation and apologized, we told him that we weren’t aware of this ingredient, because it was not listed, and we she saw a photo on Yelp which is what she thought she was ordering. To which he responded that this is a high-end restaurant that changes their menu seasonally we should’ve known that the item wouldn’t still be available. He went into a lecture on professional chefs and menus but his statements were fictitious. He was just belittling us. Both my parents and sister are professional chefs. I’m very familiar with the profession but I did not want to incite further conflict but I was really upset that he would go that far to make us feel bad when there was just a allergy. But before he left, he took it even further, he even went as far to say, “Well will someone at the table eat this because otherwise, I’m gonna have to throw it in the trash.” We felt really uncomfortable and tried to make light of the situation and we said, “Isn’t just going back to the kitchen?” He quickly responded, “No, it’s going straight in the trash.” While it may be true it just made the experience really uncomfortable. As someone who’s worked in the service industry, putting the burden on the guest, especially for something like an allergy is completely inappropriate.
When it came time for the tip, we gave him $25 on a $215 bill. Which was still overly generous, considering his inappropriate behavior he was lucky we tipped at all. Once we tipped him, he returned to our table and demanded an explanation for his tip. To be honest, I was very surprised that he would do this, as someone who’s worked as a server in high end restaurants, it is unfortunately common for people not to tip at all, even when the service is great. For us to have tipped him at all given his attitude, he should’ve been very grateful for. I calmly responded it was because of his attitude. He was unable to accept this. He continued to berate our group to the point, that we were all physically shaking, and worried that he was going to physically attack us. When he finally left, he said, “I hope you never come back”. This was an utterly horrifying experience.
Before we left, we were able to speak to the manager, Yugi. He tried his best to make amends. He offered us 50% off our next meal, and a free glass of sake to each of us in the group. If it wasn’t for this, our night would have been ruined. We still left very rattled but we are very grateful for Yugi. Because of how scared we were we aren’t sure if we feel comfortable coming back even with Yugi’s generous offer but we greatly appreciate the sentiment.
I was talking to my partner about this and he asserted that the waiter probably wouldn’t have felt comfortable to berate us to the point of being concerned about a physical attack if there was a guy there which is absolutely true. Women dining at this restaurant should be careful. It is somewhere that I wouldn’t feel safe at without some level of protection.

My impressions for Kodō, a new izakaya restaurant that very recently opened in the arts district is nothing more than decent. Given its recent grand opening, the restaurant still needs to get used to logistics which I won’t comment much on. However, many of the dishes were strange, bland or just undercooked. There were a few lovely bites though like the ribeye and salmon sashimi with roe. Afterwards Kodō gave me food poisoning so I will not be returning. The ambiance and general design of the restaurant is superb.

Staff and ambience were great. Food on the other hand… sadly not impressed. Sushi rice was undercooked, cream pasta had grainy texture, and both salad and pasta were extremely salty.
Tsukune and sea bream were great! Wish we had tried the ribs and gobo chips but were not recommended by our waiter.
In conclusion, a cute place to try after visiting the galleries nearby but not worth driving from far kind of restaurant.

Did the omakase, superb. Only knocked off one star due to high noise level. I guess people associate loudness with popularity and popularity with quality, but this food needs no such assistance!

Cute spot across Warner music records. Got the strawberry lychee matcha latte which was a new addition. The lychee was a bit much in the latte. but the space is open and nice. They have wifi. Street parking mainly. Will come back to try the other snacks and drinks!

I really appreciate the aesthetics of modern Japanese minimalism. Beautiful design esp with midday light seeping through the floor to ceiling windows.
The sesame oat milk cappuccino had good flavor (slightly on the savory side, like most good sesame desserts), but the texture was too gritty for a beverage. Lots of sediment at the bottom which made for an interesting sand-like slurp.

My friend were hosted 18 friends dinner party at Kodo. He was reservation in banquet room which was so minimal style room. He ordered Omakase style foods for each person that Ceasar salad, Seared sea Bream, Peppers, Broccoli, Calamari, Three Sushi plate, Prime ribs, Green tea ice cream and Sake. All food texture was good, fresh, and delicious and plating was elegant on the black table. The waiters served good and friendly especially he brought us two stand stoves.

Beautiful space, dishes and cocktails. Love the sushi here and there's a private room for special events. High quality of cocktails, Yuzu Margarita is a must! Perfect for a date night or special event. I personally like sitting at the bar and watching the sushi team and hanging.

Only been for breakfast. Food was solid but sandwiches literally took like 25-30 min to wait. Longest I’ve ever waited for a sandwich at a cafe, and there was barely anyone else there. You need staff with more sense of urgency.

Can't wait to come back here the atmosphere is modern natural look, very nice. Lighting is low, advanced warning for those that matters to. Sat at the sushi bar top to enjoy drinks, apps and dinner. Outside it was too cold in November but still the fire pit looked nice. They offer valet but we ended up parking down the street, got lucky. There are lots of restaurants around this area so parking is an issue. On busy nights I suggest using valet service. Driving by this place is easy to miss since it's tucked back into the building and not a clear outside sign visible at night. The waiting area is really beautifully decorated.

We spent NYE dinner here with my family, it took a while to get seated but was well worth it. The atmosphere was cool but kinda weird because we ended up in a room that felt like it was a dining hall in a studio loft in downtown L.A.. I mean I get the industrial chic aesthetic that they are going for, but I just felt like everyone in that room was part of an art gallery dining experience. So that was kinda off. But also it was brutally raining hard that day and I'm sure everyone was just flustered with moving things around but and trying to keep their staff and clients dry. The food was excellent, for modern twist on Japanese cuisine it was good. Just disappointed with the rib eye which was cooked on the medium well side. The server did not even ask how we wanted it cooked. But other than that their dishes are tasty. The service was good, they did forget about our espresso and it took 20 minutes or so to get it going, but then the server came back clutch with a round of cold sake for that mistake. I mean nobody is perfect. But I just like to point out flaws so if the management ever reads this, that they know that their staff is great to think a step ahead to keep their clients happy. Overall it was a great experience. I would recommend it for date nights, not so much large parties. Maybe parties of 6 and under to really enjoy the place.

If you like dark places, that blare loud music, and tries too hard to be a club instead of an actual izakaya where you get to know fellow customers AND the chef? Uhm, this place is for you. The sushi isn't bad, but are you that lazy you can't find another place that offers similar grade if not better elsewhere, for a better price, or do you really want to go to a place that calls itself an Izakaya but tries too hard to stand out that it's too cool to be located in Little Tokyo, or any other Japanese enclave? Or did they know they really wouldn't be able to make it there?
Plus, the cups were bought from Ikea. Nice economic choice, but that doesn't give me the high class feel. Ikea is for the home, not a ritzy restaurant.
Ok, I'm being harsh. They were nice people, and food wasn't bad, but for the price? The environment? Not for me.
I had the Sea Bass, while my friend had the 8oz steak. We shared our pieces of our meals with each other. I realized something: taste & aroma of steak hitting my palate, with the waft of the Sea Bass reminded me of Vienna Sausages.
Cheesecake was the highlight. Nice tart of the jam cutting into the sweetness of the cream was a nice touch. But you don't go to an Izakaya for the cheesecake.
Just the whole mix of everything was too weird for me. Your mileage may vary.

Kodo was such a beautiful experience, even though I travel and visit many restaurants I always feel like the LA service is never up to the level of the food but Kodo was not the case. Our server Diana was wonderful, she was kind and very attentive, her suggestions were on point and the overall experience was a 10/10 because of her. Kodo has definitely earn a spot for my favorite restaurant in LA. Try the Yuzu Margarita I ordered way too many but not regrets!!! Their drinks pair so well with every dish.

Saw this place on Youtube from a vlogger I follow and decided to stop by one early evening because I love the aesthetics of modern Japanese minimalism.
The place is beautifully designed, and I wish I stopped by earlier to see the light streaming through the windows and into the space, so plus points for the aesthetics.
However, the drinks were small, kind of pricy, and not super great, so this might just be a one and done kind of place for us.

Cute cafe with cold staff and overpriced drinks.
Literally, the only reason people would come here is for the gram as the cafe has a Japanese inspired minimal aesthetic.
Drinks are overpriced in non-branded cups and taste like normal drinks you’d get at any other cafe. We had the soba cha and matcha latte and both were okay. I like my soba cha which was just buckwheat tea.
The staff was what irked me. There’s a male and female who work behind the rykn counter and they don’t know how to be in the service/food industry. They were done if the most unwelcoming, disinterested and conceited people I’ve come across. The moment you walk up, their expression is enough to make those walk away.
They share the space with another business and not sure if they are a permanent vendor but during the time we went in mid-Oct, there was a Japanese ice dessert business and although we didn’t purchase anything, the staff their sure had better service to their customers than at rykn.
Went on a Sunday afternoon so the place was busy. Since it’s in the edge of the art district, surrounding areas can be sketchy and it was extremely loud with many motorcyclists being obnoxious on the road.
Will not be returning and don’t recommend it to others.

I should've become a schoolteacher so i could use this moment to give extra credit.
Just... Wow.
So i brought my gf here for our anniversary dinner. We were greeted at the host stand by a gentleman, Nobu, who we would later find out is the manager, that went out of his way to check on us and ensure our experience was above and beyond every step of the way. Seeing a manager pause to check on guests and grab plates from tables, while attending to everything else, is always a good sign.
Our server Diana was an absolute gem; knowledgable, attentive, funny, we left feeling like we met a new friend. the menu had so much to offer we didn't really know where to start and she made sure we ordered well.
The chef hand-delivered many of the dishes that were, aside from fresh and delicious, beautifully prepared and presented.
(My gf is Japanese and raved about every dish.)
You might not expect such a culinary-focused establishment to have a good bar program but thats what really knocked it out of the park for me.
Sam and Myles were able to recommend drinks, pair cocktails with our courses, and even prepare off-menu classics... and never stopped smiling.
From sake pairings to complex cocktails with boutique cordials, so much practical knowledge, they went so far beyond our expectations... i would go back to just sit at the bar.
Did i mention the design and atmosphere at this place?
It's beautiful.
It blows my mind to see this restaurant get anything less than 5 stars, we can't wait for an excuse to go back and dine with this crew.

Sit down, pass around menus and get forgotten with disappointing upscale Japanese food - but mostly the service kills this place. Too much money was spent on internal design, too little on investing in management or staff that understand hospitality.
Our experience was off to a rocky start when we were sat and the hostess said "here are your menus" and immediately walked away. I guess I was the table captain left to distribute the menus to our group of 5. Next moment worth highlighting was when asking about the Kurikara, described as eel liver and meat on menu. We asked to be told more about it and the server replied, "it's eel liver and eel meat" - I guess we can't read. The best we got after asking for more is that it was cooked over charcoal. We ordered a few dishes regardless to get us started on the first half of the meal but needed more time for drinks, asking for water in the meantime.
Water finally came, but the server failed to ask if we were ready to order drinks. Our first dishes came and our server hadn't returned so we finally asked another server to put in our drink order. Meanwhile water was out and we had to flag down for more, never was the staff proactive about filling water throughout the meal. Empty plates were left on the table very often, resulting in awkward placement of new dishes as they arrived - without each staff member clearing plates to make room. And even by the time we were 75% done the server never stopped by for more drink orders or more food orders, even though we said the first order was just to get us started. Fast forward to when we finally finished our food, we decided it wasn't worth ordering more as we were done feeling like unwelcome guests visiting distant relatives who think you are from the bad side of the family. The server finally realized we had ordered drinks and asked us what each of the cocktails were to add onto the bill which when it finally arrived at the table, of course took forever to come close out. We left and finished our dinner elsewhere. But not before getting scolded for asking for valet parking validation when the valet sign stated the price "with validation".
Don't waste your time here. Notice I didn't even take time on the food. Not worth even talking about though not terrible enough to give a 1 star review.

Different experience. They couldn’t find sparkling water nor the wine we asked for and also a cocktail was not an option as the bartender(s) didn’t show up. Ordered the sea bream signature dish but were then told not available.
The chef has an Italian take on Japanese we were told, but based on many visits to both Japan and Italy, I didn’t see nor taste it.
A signature dish around salmon was good; the robata spare ribs and the trio of hand rolls were ok’ish. The seaweed salad never arrived.
Most interestingly, we had a 8.30 pm reservation and at 9.15 pm were told “last call”.
So asked the check and were out at 9.20 pm.
Cheers.

Great food, HORRIBLE service and overall experience. I drove 2 hours to this place, the food was great, thanks to the chef.
Until our server came with our receipt asking “why we didn’t tip” they only accept card and I was planning on leaving the tip in cash. Before I had the chance to get the receipt to see how much I need to tip, he came to our table and embarrassed my friend and I literally In front of half the restaurant lecturing me with a loud voice on how he gets paid minimum wage and that tips is how he makes money. In shocked, I was out of words and regret not talking back. It’s a shame that such a nice restaurants treats its customers super unprofessionally and disrespectfully. Definitely not going again although the food is to die for.
Server was a late 20’s early 30’s Asian server with tattoos on his hand. And of course I didn’t tip after being humiliated.

This is a restaurant with a great vibe and decor. The tables make it difficult to scoot down the benches. The salads are an acquired taste and the timing of dishes needs much improvement. The goods, are the cocktails and hot foods. Japanese omelet and riblets are a must order.

Amazing experience all around. I was a bit hesitant going on because of some of the negative reviews. But man, it was an experience. The food, drinks, service and ambiance, all top notch. The yuzu margarita and spare ribs were the highlights of the meal. Right behind them were the hand roll trio and shishito peppers.
Some of the misses were the tofu and the desserts. Somewhat underwhelming, especially compared to the rest of the meal.

This place is very lovely, especially with the outdoor space's design and spacious interior, but I have to say something about the cold service we received. Their pastries all looked elegant and delicious, but had no labels or descriptions to tell you what they were. I asked the staff on register and he mumbled their names, with no additional details whatsoever as some sounded like unique goods. He was very cold, and when he got the item I picked, he placed it right in front of him instead of out towards me, so I had to awkwardly lean in and grab it from him. I believe he needed a pick-me-up or something to lighten up his customer service.
There was one girl though working in the back half of the restaurant and coming in and out of the outdoor seating area. She smiled at us every time any of us made eye contact with us and was very welcoming, including letting me know where the bathroom was. The pastry was tasty. Maybe I'd come back to try the food, but there are so many other options in LA.

For the price and the aesthetic, I was hoping for more. But this place is really not it. Do not get the omakase. Who serves a bowl of bland noodle soup at the end of some mediocre sushi? I hope they will improve, but 6 weeks in, idk. Feels like an arts district version of Katsuya: overpriced meh.

Start to finish this was an amazing meal. Our server was personal and chatty and made wonderful recommendations. We enjoyed the pacing of service and the sizes of the portions. And when you have to pick between something absolutely wonderfully delicious and something simply delicious there are things I would probably double down on next time like the hobo chips, the sea bream and the rib eye!

Had high hopes for this spot as a friend showed pictures. 4-5 stars for presentation and aesthetics of the place. Food is over priced for dishes that are either too salty or too bland. It’s really a hit or miss on the dishes. Someone needs to taste test the food or I don’t see this place surviving long.
