Probably my favorite sushi place in Tucson. The quality is good and they do a great job bringing it out quickly. There are half price rolls every day of the week, and if you try and limit yourself to that you can get out of here full for an amazing price. If you've never had them before, you have to try the quail egg shooters, they're an acquired taste but definitely one of my favorite things. Also have to get the Orgasmo roll, it's named perfectly.

Shogun Has Potential but Needs Modern Updates

Shogun offers a dining experience with both strengths and weaknesses. While the restaurant could benefit from modern upgrades and greater transparency about its policies, it does have some notable highlights worth mentioning.

Pros:
• Daily Sushi Roll Specials: Shogun offers great value with daily specials on sushi rolls. For example, menu items 1 through 5 are half off on Mondays
• Las Vegas Roll & Sashimi: The Las Vegas roll is a standout item, and the sashimi, while made from farm-raised salmon, is fresh and enjoyable given the region’s limitations. For a desert location, the quality is commendable.
• Good Value for Select Items: For what they have to work with, the sushi and sashimi quality is solid, and the specials make it more affordable for diners seeking a good deal.

Cons:
• Outdated Atmosphere: The space feels cramped and humid, with older décor that could use significant modernization to enhance the dining experience.
• Restroom Facilities: While there are separate restrooms for men and women, each only has a single stall, often leading to inconvenient wait times.
• Inconsistent Service Fees: While service fees were previously added to bills exceeding $100, this policy seems to be inconsistently applied, which may confuse diners.
• Limited Spicy Ponzu Sauce: While their sauces are flavorful, the portions of spicy ponzu sauce are smaller than expected, which can be disappointing for fans of bold flavors.

Overall Impression:

Shogun has its strengths, particularly with its daily sushi roll specials and certain menu items, but there is room for improvement. With updates to its atmosphere, restroom facilities, and clearer service policies, it could offer a much better experience for its diners. For now, it’s a good spot for those looking for a deal or familiar with its quirks.

Hit-or-miss food and service. You never know what you’re going to get. Sometimes fresh tasting and sometimes tastes like warm-up leftovers. Seems like the servers are specially trained to ignore trying to get their attention to get your order in, receive the food, and get the check. ALL CALL IN ORDERS ALSO TAKE PRIORITY OVER YOUR OWN FOOD ORDER - The food often takes forever and you often see people who came in a half hour after you did get their food way before you do. You can see people’s orders waiting for long periods at the counter waiting for the server to bring it to your table. When it’s good, it’s good. When it’s bad, you won’t be coming back.

I visited shogun sushi November 16 for the first time with 3 of us all together.
Just for the people who want to know about the quality of the sushi here it is.
We ordered a 2 California rolls, Mariposa roll, Tucson roll and chicken yakisoba and dessert. The California roll was one of the best I ever had in Tucson.i seen that other reviewers didn’t like the cucumber and rice in the sushi. I think they made changes because the cucumber was fresh and the rice was perfectly cooked and tasted great. The mariposa roll was also really tasty. It had so much flavor and texture. The fish inside this roll was delicious. The Tucson roll was terrible. It had too much cream cheese and mayo. That’s all that was tasted upon biting into it. The chicken yakisoba was mediocre my sister said the chicken was rubbery and had no flavor. She did like the noodles. The sushi is good but an overpriced but good. The Tucson roll wasn’t comped but they did give us a discount on it which was appreciated. Our waiter was awesome his name was Hayden. Very informative of the menu and polite. Sushi and dessert took forever to come out. Also the walls are dirty and it kind of smells like mildew. Overall we paid 82 dollars which I thought was pricey.

I had the worst experience at the place of business

Arriving for a takeout order , I informed cashier I seen ants.
further investigating noted ants in food. I called to speak to manager. He laughed, proceeded to say we showed you the food nothing we can do. Proceeds to hang up in my face.

Not only was it unprofessional no acknowledgement of ants and was very rude.

I would never recommend this restaurant. Erin the manager has no customer service and wanted to call police for trespassing. I wasnt trespassing when I bought it.

Horrible experience, food and unclean.

This is a nice little hide away, tucked in the corner of a strip mall behind Denny’s. The staff are young and ambitious. The service was excellent and attentive. The menu is diverse. The rolls are good, but some are modified from more traditional, but tasty. Appears popular with locals and fair priced. Environment is friendly with shogunate accents. Recommend for basic well rounded experience.

Shogun's salmon nigiri is the best in town. They give you ENORMOUS pieces and always include a side car of extra scraps. It's always high quality, fresh, and melts in your mouth. Their daily half price rolls are a fun way to try new things but their nigiri is really the star. To top it off, their sake bombs are large and incredibly reasonably priced. Try to get a private curtained booth if you can!

My husband has been going to Shogun for a couple of decades. When he and I met in 2009, this was one of our first dates....and it is our "go-to" restaurant when we plan a night out.

While we rarely sit other than the sushi bar, the restaurant does offer general dining and quiet private areas and a full menu.

The waitstaff and Sushi Chefs are pleasant. The Sashimi and Nigiri are fresh and bountiful...no skinny slices here. Sushi Roll specials are offered daily (which is a great way to try something new).

They are closed the first Sunday of each month, so keep that in mind when planning a visit.

I haven't visited since before the pandemic, and I forgot how good Shogun is! The rolls were delicious, my date and I had a sampling of different ones and can't decide what the best is. Disgusting. If you want the worst-than-grocery-store hodgepodge of seafood wrapped in overcooked soggy rice, Shogun is the place. 🙄

Cucumber in the eel roll was rotten to the point where it was bitter, making the entire roll inedible. The shrimp tempura in another roll tasted like it had been cooked days before and had a distinct 'stale and dusty' flavor to it. We told the server about the issues with our food and no real resolution was offered.

This establishment is the absolute tops when it comes to Sushi and other Japanese food. The fish on the Sushi dwarfs the rice. I kid you not. So fresh and delicious. Dozens and dozens of rolls with a different 5 on Special every day. There are private alcoves you can request when you get there. The Sushi Chefs are amazing and food comes out quickly. Go! The wife and I came on a Friday evening at about 7:30 based on the recommendations our dental hygienist and a co-worker. The co-worker's boyfriend is a sushi chef in downtown Tucson so I was anxious as my previous experience had been only so-so. She gave me 3 tips and Shogun is closest. Good atmosphere, with a waterfall near where we were seated. Also with curtained booths across one wall (seating from 2 to 6) that must be reserved. Otherwise, the atmosphere was functional and nothing special. But that's not what sushi fans care about. Right?! We want tasty, fresh fish and fast friendly service... and Shogun is 5 stars in both these 2 categories

When we arrived they were really, really busy and we didn't have a reservation so we waited 10 minutes for a table. Necessary because, sadly, my wife doesn't like sitting at the sushi bar.

We were served miso soup and salad (both delicious and included at no extra charge) and the wife had to ask for a fork. As a sushi fan for many years, I knew this was a very good sign. We both had the house hot saki which was excellent.

I ordered 6 pieces of yellowtail sashimi. One of 3 mix-and-match choices which also included salmon and tuna. I thought this was expensive at order time. Wow! Was I mistaken. The serving was huge! Elsewhere locally I have ordered 8 pieces for 16 bucks and ended up ordering twice. Not at Shogun though. I was full! And the yellowtail was very fresh and delicious.

We had ice cream for desert and I ordered bean which can be really bland. But when it's good it's very good. Two scoops was the standard serving size and it was so fresh and so good.

Then our check was the perfect finish to a perfect meal. Far less than our usual sushi bill here or in California.

One thing was a bit odd, but turned out not to be a problem at all. I had to ask for ginger and wasabi. And then a refill because the first portion was too small. (Remember, the yellowtail was huge). However, both times it was brought immediately and the second time it was really big. And there was no charge. Both the ginger and wasabi were very fresh and tasty. And the wasabi was the real thing. Creamy and dissolved in soy sauce as it should, not that fake paste often served instead these days.

I have two more recommendations to try. But Shogun has got to be the best deal in Tucson!

Probably the worst experience ever at a sushi restaurant. First of all every employee seems angry from the moment we arrived.
We weren’t even greeted, just an offering of sushi bar or table was it. The hostess that turned out to be our waiter never offered us a menu. The only menu we used was on the sushi bar but we later found out there was a second menu offering traditional Japanese dishes other than sushi.
Once we were seated we were served cold miso soup and cold edamame appetizer.
We ordered the spicy tuna roll and a crab appetizer. I swear it was so poorly put together a first grader could have done a better job.
Not even a thank you for coming in, I will never be back to this restaurant. I can’t believe people go back here. The management/owners should be ashamed of themselves.

Sorry to say the worst place I’ve ever eatin at. Sushi was not rolled even close to being a sushi roll. Kani was just chunks of fake crab(which I know it is and am great with when prepared properly) not marinated or flavored. Cuts of sashimi way too thick. Would make some cry how horribly presented everything was. Waiter threw stuff in front of us didn’t offer a menu and was plain rude.

I’m going to make this short, my sushi was bland and tasteless, my beef Bulgogi was so overcooked, and the server did not even give me any rice nor a spoon with it so it could be shared, which leads me to the service, which was horrible, I do not understand why this place was packed with people, they must of all been ill informed or desperate because I know of at least 20 other sushi places in the city of Tucson that puts this place to shame. There was absolutely nothing that I liked about this place. Go to Takamatsu on Speedway and Craycroft SE corner for real Sushi

I got a rainbow roll which traditionally has different types of raw fish on the outside, California roll inside. It was really underwhelming, the fish pieces were small, not cut Japanese/sushi style, and the fish was not fresh, it really had no flavor. The other 2 rolls that I had were flash fried and really lacked flavor.

I'll start this review with a caveat: I love this place and have for many years for both quality and sentimental reasons.

The reason I am giving 3 stars is cleanliness. There is years of neglected areas that need attention. In the front windows there is dust, dead bugs and random junk that has built up between the windows and decorative paper. The interior also has long term build up issues. In the private booths. Grime in all the ledges & creases. The floors need deep cleaning. The ceiling could use attention as well. The entire place needs a serious deep clean. It seems at though only light clean up like table wipes & vaccum/mopping have been done. There were also flies pestering us while we ate yesterday

All that being said. I've been here 3 times in 2022 & probably 20 times over the last...idk 15 years? The food is always excellent, the service is always good, & I love the novelty of sitting in the private booth.

Sho-gun I've always considered you a high quality place. The decline in appearance has taken time. I truly hope you don't take offense & make the effort to refresh your place.

The food tasted like it was frozen and then cooked because the veggie fried rice tasted strongly of preserved veggies, and every meat dish I ordered besides sushi had tough overcooked meat that was not palatable. The servers only came to check on us to get our order and give us our meals, I had to go walk to the front to ask for to-go boxes and a bag. There was one guy who helped our server who was also a bit curt when serving and getting our orders. I also ordered a dessert and was told at the very end of my meal that they actually didn't have that dessert in stock, so they fixed my check to remove it after letting me know. My entire order also came out to about $150, which was not worth the experience I had with my family. The only thing good about it was the interior design and the fact that they have sectioned off tables in small rooms, like they have in some areas in Japan, which is more unique compared to other Japanese restaurants I've been to in Tucson.

The only thing I can recommend from this place is their miso soup, sushi, and sashimi.

Best sushi I have in Tucson. Salmon is always fresh and fatty (and they always give you extra, even though the original piece is so big and thick already). The toro and o-toro are must-have when available. The vinegar rice fits the sashimi to a T, the acidity and viscosity are just prefect. Impeccable! I go there almost once a week for three years.

Based of my visit today, you should only get sushi at this restaurant as it is fresher.

The beef in the teppan was so overcooked that the meat was charred. The meat was far over "well done", it was like bit into an eraser.

The waiter told us "yeah this is freshly made" despite the food being inedible

Vegetables taste either frozen or canned, there is a distinct after taste.

A total rip off at 25 dollars.

Sushi was outstanding! If you are in a hurry..this isn't the restaurant for you. If you want quality food and exceptional sushi...definitely stop in. First time eating here..it is now favorite sushi in Tucson. Portions are huge and fresh. 5 stars..only rated 4 for service because it took quite awhile to get served

NEW EDIT: Previously a place I really liked but service was SO AWFUL, that it simply has to be commented on.

The other day we were subjected to maybe one of the single worst experiences in a restaurant I have had in a long time. We arrived at 7:45 PM, 1 hr 15 to closing. The staff were abysmal- they were constantly badmouthing each other, barely paying attention to their tables. One guy kept insisting he be closed out for his tips, pestering other servers. He then took another server's tips lmao! And YES I could hear every word these dumb jokers were saying. They brought out each part of the meal at a snail's pace. 30 minutes for the miso soup, another 20 for appetizers. My partner's appetizers were burnt to a crisp. Only her sashimi and SOME of her sushi were intact. When her volcanoes came out THEY WERE ALSO COMPLETELY BURNED. But, hey, at least they were gracious enough to take that off our tab. Still cost us 92 dollars tho.

oh, and my bento box? It got to my table at about 8:50, ten minutes before closing time. We had been there OVER AN HOUR

In conclusion, we were served by a bunch of whiney children in serious need of some basic lessons in customer service. Abysmal. My partner was too nice, she gave tip. I would have given none.

Food is pretty good here and we enjoy it every time we go. The half price sushi is a great idea as well. This is a place you definitely want to try. The staff has always been friendly every time we visit here as well.

One might think there are no good restaurants between Tucson and San Diego, but recently we found Sophia’s on the main drag through Gila Bend. What a treat!! This casual restaurant makes some of the best home style Mexican food anywhere. I love the carnitas tacos. The sopapillas are most amazing. Make sure you save room for them. And they also have Churros, which are so good as well

It's a great small local sushi place. I love the ala carte options. And it serves 2 pieces for each order. I love that. It was yummy. Everything was fresh, and they have specials daily. Some rolls are half off, so that's also a great deal. It was a nice experience. Fast with preparing. Great service. Look forward to enjoying this place again

What a happy accident! We originally intended on dennys but spotted this in the corner. I knew walking in the door this would be a gem. The water fountain is calming touch. And everything we ate was next level. We ordered another round.

Do not ever order to go and wait! First off the sushi here is amazing. The chefs are efficient and I am guessing the key here is to sit at the sushi bar. I ordered 3 rolls to go. The restaurant was on the slow side and figured it would be out fast. I eventually saw what was my order get placed on the counter for the cashier. It sat..and sat..and sat. I thought maybe there wasn't anything in the container. About 10 minutes later they picked it up looked at the ticket looked at me and placed it behind the counter. Watched multiple tables being served that sat after I had been there. After another 10 minutes they call me up and say your order is ready. I ask how long it had been there, knowing the answer, and he lied and said he just brought it up!? I told him I have been watching and saw when it came up and he just stared at me. Never again. Time to find the second best sushi in Tucson.

This place was good but the state of their goldfish tank was so depressing. It desperately needs to be cleaned. Please don’t keep fish if it isn’t a priority to take care of them. :(

This was the first Sushi restaurant I visited in Tucson (2001) and I'm still a big fan. I wouldn't call this a criticism, but the size of the nigiri pieces are huge. My wife and I have to tear them in 2 to eat them.

I came in last week to have dinner around 8pm, they were closing at 9pm.
They were about to close when they brought us the check.
The moment i was taking out my credit card to pay, a waiter of color threw at me the check again, because he was on a rush and wanted to get out of there asap. All the other staff were kind to us. The moment we were walking out of the restaurant, the waiter of color complained out loud that i just left 10% tip.

The food was delicious but the waiters were terrible. When we first sat down the waiter came up and didn’t really greet us. The first thing he said was if we were doing separate checks and then went to get us more menus. He took our order and we received our food from a different waiter. We waited a really long time for refills and didn’t see our waiter for the rest of the time there. When we finally received our check it was probably about 1 hour till closing time and we went to pay our bill. One of the waiters at the front told a family that they weren’t serving anymore and they left. That same waiter told another waiter that they turned away that family because they didn’t seem like the big spending type of people. I was very appalled by this because they were insulting these people in front of other customers at the front. I usually have good experiences at this restaurant but I will NOT be coming back since their waiters seem to turn away people that they think won’t spend a lot of money.

This place has gone downhill since the last time we've been there. The sushi was all disappointing, bad aftertaste with the fish (especially the tuna), flavors just weren't there. The rice wasn't soft like it should be. Sadly, it seems like we should've just trusted our instincts as we all good food poisoning from that dinner. Won't be back again - there's other places that are more consistent with their quality and service.
