Q: What did Rose tell Jack in the Japanese dubbed Titanic movie?
A: "I'll never let gyoza."

With multiple locations across the country, Uchi has made a home in Scottsdale and what a privilege. Tilly was our waitress and I'm pretty sure this Minnesota gal is now a part of our family.

Four of us came on Friday at 4PM for Happy Hour. We all did the Signature Tasting which is an eight-course tasting for two featuring their favorite dishes and signature bites along with some other dishes. Here's the breakdown (‡ = raw):

* Oyster ‡ seasonal chef selection: The oysters we had were from Puget Sound, Washington. Delightful, sweet, creamy, and not too briny. It was fresh and a great way to start the meal.

* Brussels Sprouts - fish caramel, lemon, chili: I love me this tiny cabbage and these were delightful. That rascal, Jon H., is a brussel sprouts hater and commandeered all the sprouts on the table.

* Bincho Nigiri ‡: Suggested to eat with your hands, as the rice is warm and delicate, and to flip it fish-side down on your tongue. I'll be honest. This was the least impressive.

* Avocado Nigiri: Described as "small but mighty" and accurately described. That same rascal, Jon H., hates avocados and still ate his nigiri.

* Hamachi Temaki ‡ yellowtail, nori, koshihikari rice: Is it weird that I got Vietnamese spring roll vibes from this? I think it was the mint but as a spring roll lover, I absolutely enjoyed the temaki. It was served with a delightful yuzu sweet & sour sauce.

* Kabocha Tempura - Japanese pumpkin: I was already feeling full by this point so I ate half of my tempura but wowzah. Perfectly crisp, gorgeously golden, it as as if King Midas touched this kabocha himself.

* Hama Chili ‡ yellowtail, ponzu, thai chili, orange supreme: One of my favorite bites of the night. The Thai chili salt on top gave the mild delicate hamachi a lemongrass flavor profile. It was delightful.

* Wagyu Gunkan ‡ tamari: We had actually received a different wagyu dish we had ordered (see below) and comparing the two, this wasn't as good. The cool raw wagyu with the warm rice was a little off-putting.

* Walu Walu - grilled escolar, yuzupon, candied citrus, myoga: One of the favorites of the table, this gorgeously grilled escolar swam in a bright sauce. Perfectly flaky and moist, this fish had us looking for more!

* Warm Banana Cake - chicory, buckwheat, white coffee ice cream: What a way to cap a very fulfilling meal. I only had a couple of bites of the cake because my ribs were starting to hurt from how full I was. I wish I could have had a bowl of ice cream alone. It was so sooo good.

We also added some more items on the side:

* Uchi Salad: Best described by Tilly as a taco. You pick it up, swirl it around the sauce, and chomp it. It was fresh. It was delicious. And honestly, they need to jar that salad dressing and sell it.

* Pork Skewers: Served with slivers of beets and topped with a spicy chimichurri. I had one cube but that cube packed flavor. It was hot & spicy, and I'm not talking about the sandwich over at McDonald's.

* Wagyu Carpaccio: Get this. It's so good. It comes as four bites but you will wish all four bites were yours.

* Crispy Rice Cake: This was a surprise offering and wow, such flavors.

* Two bottles of Otokoyama Junmai sake: KANPAI!

I wouldn't recommend it. We had the omakase, and the price didn't match the value, especially since we left still hungry. The service and atmosphere were just average, nothing stood out.

The sparse lobby with two wooden chairs and a long wooden bench is typically Japanese, which I love. The segmented dining areas are chic but cozy, with lots of wood and variously finished barrel-vaulted ceilings. There are romantic-ish booths for two and tables for larger parties. The stone-surfaced bar is the kind we like, C-shaped, where one can see people on the other side. We’ll be eating at this bar on our next visit, which will surely be soon. The L-shaped sushi bar seats about 12 but I wouldn’t call the menu sushi-centric. Yes, it has sushi elements, like a section dedicated to different cuts of bluefin tuna (very cool), and another section called Toyosu, which is the premier Tokyo fish market. If the name of this section means they fly in the fish from Tokyo, I’m really impressed, but I suspect I’m wrong because the fish prices would be higher if I were right, and the uni says it is from Santa Barbara. Still, I’m impressed with the sashimi selection and its uncommon entries, such medai and kinmedai. I call the yaki part of the menu (which is most of it) nouveau Japanese, where traditional Japanese becomes more playful and creative. The sake list was very good and not nigiri-heavy, which is a plus in my book. All of the food was standout, as was the service. YouTube’s Chef’s Apprentice

My boyfriend and I celebrated his birthday on a Wednesday night at this restaurant. Despite being busy for a weekday, we were excited, hoping it indicated good food. We sat at the sushi bar and ordered the omakase (~$350 for 2 people). While the food was good, it wasn't traditional Japanese omakase, with some non-Japanese dishes included.

What we enjoyed:
1. The food: Out of 11 courses (including 1 extra), we enjoyed 10. The roll was the only dish we didn't like as much.
2. The atmosphere: The restaurant had a simple, minimalistic design with a Japandi and modern rustic vibe, perfect for date nights.

What we didn't enjoy:
1. The speed of the service. Yes it was busy that night but it took our waitress about 15 minutes to greet us and ask for drinks. Then it also took about 15-30 minutes in between each course to come out. We found ourselves just sitting there waiting for the next course wondering if they had forgotten about us.
2. We ordered omakase for 2, but each plate came on one plate, which we had to share. I've never been to an omakase where they made the customers share off of a plate instead of giving it in individual plates. Some of the portions that we had to share honestly seemed like it should be for one and I'm pretty sure the guest sitting a couple of stools down from us who came alone got the same amount as us as 1 person. There was a soup that came out that was also in one bowl and initially it didn't come with individual bowls for us to eat off of. So I had to call the waitress and ask if this is meant to be shared and eaten off of the same bowl, in which she said yes but that she'll get us bowls if we want. Odd. What if we weren't together and were business partners and didn't want to dip our spoons in the same bowl? Also the dessert at the end was only for one person that we had to share. If you came here alone and ordered omakase, you would've gotten the same amount of dessert for one. So I'm not sure why we were paying for 2 omakases when we shared pretty much almost the same portion as 1 person ordering omakase.
3. When I made the reservation online, it asked what the occasion was so I indicated that we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday. I'm not sure what the purpose of asking what the occasion was if no acknowledgement or special gesture were going to be made. We didn't expect a free dessert, as the omakase comes with a dessert at the end, but no happy birthday wishes or anything that acknowledged it.

This has quickly become our favorite restaurant—we’ve already been twice in the past two months and can’t wait to return next month. Everything here is incredible, and the servers are wonderfully kind and attentive. The fried milk is absolutely divine, and the hachi no hiza is dangerously easy to drink, like a refreshing tart lemonade. The only small note about the atmosphere is that it tends to be a bit chilly, so bringing an extra layer is a good idea. The noise level is on the higher side, but conversations are still manageable.

Place is not for getting full if you are considered about price. It's shareable small plates with small food. This restraunt as woke friendly employees, the service was great! But expect to wait 2 hours for all your food, feel cramped if sitting in booth, hear your neighbors whole conversation and pay at least $100 per person and still be hungry.

Also THEY litterally said you are not allowed to bring your own water bottles!!! They DO NOT ALLOW OUTSIDE WATER unopened water?!

Anytime I visit any Uchi restaurant I am not disappointed. Food is consistently delicious and prices are more than fare. The service is top notch and they are never hesitant to answer questions about their extensive menu. I do not live near an Uchi, so when I travel I search them out. I absolutely DREAM about the karaage between visits and it has been great at any location. The happy hour menu is possibly one of the best and I can't wait to visit again.

I have been coming here maybe once a month. Uchi is the best sushi place in the entire Phoenix metro. This is not the place if your definition of sushi is some mayo-loaded dynamite American maki rolls. You definitely won’t get full here after spending $80. They do have maki btw with my favorite being uni gunkan and yellowtail temaki. The real gem here is the nigiri. They have so many varieties of fish you will not find anywhere else in the Valley. Most sushi places only carry what they can sell so the choices of fish are always limited to the usual. I wish more sushi places here took risks but as of now Uchi is where you go if you want to expand your vocabulary on sushi. My personal favorite are gindara and kanpachi. They melt in your mouth. On many of the white fish nigiri they do dress it up a bit. I do like traditional sushi but Uchi does a fantastic job at this. Drinks are really good too.

After hearing all the hype about Uchi in Scottsdale, we decided to give it a try for our New Year's Eve dinner. As expected, the place was packed, with a full staff on board. A staff member greeted us warmly, and we were promptly seated at the bar, which had availability.

Upon seating, the bartender greeted us and made us feel very welcome. The interior is modern yet cozy, and the atmosphere was lively and vibrant.

We started with a cocktail and let the bartender surprise us with the choice. It turned out to be amazing! For food, we ordered the smoked duck, suzuki yaki, softshell crab roll, wagyu, and A5 wagyu gunkan. Every dish was incredibly flavorful, and the wagyu’s taste was reminiscent of our visit to Japan. The portions were small, but that suited us perfectly since we weren’t very hungry and were more focused on enjoying the evening.

Overall, the experience was excellent. The bartender did a fantastic job of keeping us entertained and ensuring great service throughout the night. This is definitely going to be our go-to spot for drinks and bites to eat. I highly recommend this place if you're looking for quality flavors and an enjoyable dining experience.

We came here for dinner while visiting my parents in Scottsdale, and cannot say enough great things about this Uchi! We’re originally from Texas and have been to the original Uchi in Austin, as well as the Dallas and Houston locations, and our experience at this new location in Scottsdale was by far one of our best experiences.

The restaurant itself is beautiful inside. The service was spectacular and was the key to what made this evening so special — Fran was our waitress and she was amazing and so knowledgable! She coursed out our meal perfectly and made such great recommendations. Thank you Fran for being so great!! Highly recommend the wagyu dish under the hot tastings (it’s unique to this location) and the walu walu. The karaage, brussel sprouts and hot rock are also great Uchi staples. Warm banana cake is a must for dessert. Drinks were amazing too.

Overall would highly recommend Uchi in Scottsdale! Perfect for a special occasion dinner or date night.

This is my first time at uchi Scottsdale, I usually visit uchi in Dallas. There are some similarities but also some major differences. The size of the restaurant is much bigger in Scottsdale and because of this, the service suffers.

The food is of course absolutely amazing and there are some new menu items and differences between the Dallas location.

I would 100% recommend coming here, but some feedback to the owners.

1. Because the restaurant was so large, our server was very busy and didn't know what had come out and what didn't and was asking us in Japanese names. Not a great experience. In the Dallas location, it's much more quaint and you have more of a conversation with the server.
2. On the menu, it would be really helpful to know what dishes come in what quantity. Some things are in one some things are too some things are five, it's not easy to know when you're ordering and of course our server didn't mention it, as we were a party of six. So people are being left out constantly.
3. On the same note, don't make things a cut of five pieces. It's an odd number and people don't usually come out in odd numbers. So somebody's always going to be left out.

Culinary Delight
I recently had the pleasure of dining at an incredible restaurant that truly exceeded my expectations. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a warm atmosphere and friendly staff that set the tone for a fantastic evening.
Exquisite Small Plates
One of the standout features of this dining experience was the small plates. Each dish was a delightful explosion of flavors, expertly crafted to tantalize the palate. It's clear that the chefs are passionate about their craft, as every bite was a testament to their culinary skills. Whether you're a fan of savory or sweet, there's something on the menu to satisfy every craving.
Exceptional Service
The service at this establishment was nothing short of top-notch. The staff was attentive without being intrusive, ensuring that our glasses were never empty and that we had everything we needed to enjoy our meal. Their knowledge of the menu and willingness to make recommendations added to the overall experience, making us feel valued as guests.
A Lively Atmosphere
While the ambiance is generally inviting, it's worth noting that when the restaurant gets crowded, it can become quite noisy. However, this lively atmosphere only adds to the charm of the place, creating an energetic vibe that enhances your dining experience. The buzz of conversation and laughter creates a sense of community among diners, making it a fun spot to enjoy a meal with friends or family.
Conclusion
In summary, this restaurant is a must-visit for anyone looking for delicious food and exceptional service. The small plates are absolutely amazing, and despite the occasional noise level during peak hours, it's well worth it for the culinary adventure that awaits. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu!

Wow. This place is terrible. At least that’s what I want you to think so I can get a reservation again soon! Went for the first time a few nights ago to celebrate the holidays and had the curated tasting menu which was one of the best meals I’ve ever had. Our excellent server Brody listened to our likes, dislikes and level of “adventurousness” and absolutely nailed the choices for all three of us in our party. This nothing on the outside, small sign on the door restaurant, is incredibly modernly designed, seats many and is outrageously good. I was at and always told,
Nobu. Nobu, Nobu. Well, let me say, Uchi, Uchi, Uchi. I left my phone home so unfortunately, no photos. We had the happy hour Omakase (for 2), a 10 course, hot, cold, chefs choice of creatively, delicious small plates that left me very full. For about $125, a bingo. The dessert...OMG - warm, banana cake chicory, on a bed of crushed buckwheat and a scoop of white coffee ice cream. Say no more except go to Uchi.

We sat at the sushi bar for happy hour and had the honor of having Gabe take care of us. He truly is what made our experience as incredible as it was. For this being a transplant restaurant, they do everything very well thought out and intentional. Caroline took care of our drinks but truly it was a collective effort from the entire team who were all attentive and engaged from the moment we sat. The value of their happy hour is honestly jaw dropping, but their actual menu isn't too bad either. We ordered from both. Gabe gave amazing recommendations, was so personable and easy to talk to you. He is the highlight of our evening. Thank you Gabe so much. We hope to see you soon!

This was my third visit, and the first two times were amazing. But, sadly, this time it really fell flat. I brought my daughter and my Dad, and had talked it up for days! I did the somakase and let my waitress pick things out, and we had a slow trickle of food come. Every 10 minute (maybe) we would get a plate with three bites (one for each of us). It took 30 minutes to get our drinks. And everything was just nigiri with a little sea salt on top.

I was so disappointed and embarrassed.

I called it early and just told my waitress we are good, and got the check. In the past I spent $700 or more, this time barely $300.

What a shame this place is going down hill already after such a short period of time.

Uchi in Houston is our favorite restaurant by far. When we came to visit Scottsdale and learned they had recently opened Uchi, we had to go. We have never had a bad experience at Uchi Houston however, our experience in Scottsdale was very disappointing.

Not only did we have to wait for our reservation, the dining experience took over 2.5 hours for two guests… on a Wednesday night.

We ordered the Omakase for two plus a few other of our favorite tastings and while the food tasted good, the service was on the verge of terrible. Our waitress greeted us upon arrival/ordering and we didn't get much more attention until the end when we had to track her down and ask for our bill. We placed drink orders and water refills from the food runners who brought our dishes out (which took way too long and sometimes were even forgotten about).

Uchi has a high reputation to uphold and unfortunately they did not bring that reputation to the Scottsdale dining scene. For almost $500, we were very disappointed.

Uchi in Austin was my goto sushi restaurant when I lived there, and I was thrilled to try the new Scottsdale location. Uchi is a truly unique sushi restaurant. The one cold dish that is a must-have is the Hama Chili Crudo that combines yellowtail, ponzu, and orange slices.

The wagu skewers and hot rock are outstanding, and the nigiri is very inventive, especially the scallop and maguro.

Subpar experience. We got the omakase for three. Though the ingredients are definitely high quality, the preparation is lacking. Dishes were very tasteless. Worst of all was the octopus salad - bland in a musty way. Servers could not remember if anything else was coming, and would state that the last dish had arrived but then more would come … Also not very friendly. For over 500 dollars, I am not impressed. Not worth it. Go to Roka Akor or anywhere else.

A dining experience like none other! I did the somakase and every dish that arrived was a delightful surprise. My favorite was the crispy tofu (makimono), masu crudo (daily specials) and the kinoko nabe (hot tastings). Our server, Ashley, was attentive and did a great job explaining the dining experience and process. Since I did the somakase, she asked some questions to help tailor the selections to my likes.
With each plate delivery, you receive a thorough explanation of the dish and recommendation on how to enhance the experience when eating.
We also enjoyed some desserts, my favorite being the banana cake.

It's a bit loud inside, but the experience makes up for it.

I recently had a disappointing experience at Uchi in Scottsdale. This was my second visit—I had a great time the first time around, with delicious food and a cool vibe, even though the service wasn't top-notch. However, my recent visit left much to be desired.

We had a 9 p.m. reservation on a busy Friday night, but by the time we were seated, the restaurant was starting to empty out. Unfortunately, we ended up with the same waitress as last time, who once again greeted us with a complete lack of friendliness or warmth. She pushed us to order everything at once, which I wasn’t comfortable with, especially at a sushi restaurant where it’s easy to over-order.

Our starter (edamame) came out right away, but we waited over an hour for a simple tuna sashimi plate. The waitress barely checked in on us, and there was no apology or explanation. When we finally asked about the delay, she called over a manager (who didn't introduce himself as such). He eventually brought out our sashimi, gave a brief apology, and offered no explanation for why we’d waited so long, especially given that the restaurant was only 30% full by then.

When I shared my feedback, instead of addressing the issue or offering any form of compensation, the manager actually tried to upsell us on another bottle of sake. This was the tipping point for me. Not only did I feel dismissed, but his attempt to push an additional purchase felt completely tone-deaf under the circumstances.

On top of that, I had to specifically request basics like ginger, wasabi, and soy sauce—items that should have come with the sashimi initially. After we’d already eaten, they were placed on the table without a word. Throughout the meal, the service was completely impersonal, lacking any effort to make us feel valued as customers.

I expect better from a place with Uchi’s reputation and prices. The food here is undeniably good, but the service makes the entire experience unpleasant. Sadly, I won't be returning.

The happy hour omaksae at Uchi was delicious.
The service and the atmosphere was top notch, I also enjoyed their music selection. The tasting menu started with the Ichiban oyster. The oyster was creamy and sweet, and the tomato ceviche gave it a nice salty acid pop. This was fallowed by the dayboat scallop, which was one of my favorite bites of the night. The yuzu kosho with the scallop was delicious. The next course that arrived was the japanese sea bream. The fish was well prepared and topped with garlic. The avocado nigiri that fallowed was buttery and savory and had a nice pop from the yuzu kosho. Next was the waygu carpaccio, which was my favorite course of the night. I think the nouc mam really set it off, and the fried jalapeños were a nice addition. I could have eaten three of these. The next couple bites were great. The seasonal kabocha squash was some of the best tempura I've had. I really enjoyed the hama chile yellowtail course that fallowed. The fish was well prepared, and the ponzu sauce was very good. I added the bluefin chutoro to the omaksae, and it did not disappoint. I will also note that the rice at uchi is prepared to perfection, and this adds a lot to the experience. The last savory course was the walu walu. It had a great wood grilled flavor that was great with the ponzu. Now on to dessert! I'm often let down by desserts but not at uchi. The warm banana cake was one of the best desserts I've had in recent memory. The combination of flavors was like the best version of bananas foster you could imagine. I would highly recommend Uchi to anyone looking for an authentic Japanese dining experience. I am looking forward to returning on special occasions.

Food tastes good but a little pricey (my companions are aware of this though). Service was not great. We did not order any rolls because we were told it will take an hour (!). The usual item that my friend orders - 72-hour Wagyu - was not available. Add that to the food wait and how the food came in at staggered times - that overall did not make a good experience for any of us.

👍 Fran (at the bar) was awesome! Very customer-focused and just all-around nice! John was as well and made some good recommendations.
👍 Most nigiri options are priced for one piece (except happy hour which comes with two). They are smaller than you would normally see but I assume that is intentional so you can enjoy more items without getting full.
👍 The vibe was fairly "hip" with lots of attractive people there (Scottsdale-eque for sure).

➡️ Ate & Drank: Crispy Rice Cake (my favorite thing by far), sake & hamachi handrolls, hotake (scallop), ikura, boquerones (anchovy) and nasu (eggplant) nigiri. Cocktails: hachi no hiza (delicious, gin-based), and cabernet franc.

I've been to Uchi in Dallas, Austin and now Phoenix. I will say that the Phoenix and Dallas ones are my favorite. The Omakase (Chef's tasting) is always a treat. The service is amazing and the vibe is what I would describe as energetic. If you are on the fence about going, just do it and get the Omakase. You will be lighter in the wallet but fuller in the belly.

We had an incredible experience at Uchi! We had accidentally made reservations for the wrong night. We had a party if 10 and it was a Saturday night, so they were very booked. It was for my daughters 21st birthday. They made a miracle happen and served us anyway. Their service was fantastic, they even sent us home with dessert. Beyond that, the food was INCREDIBLE. I highly recommend this restaurant. Top notch and a real gem in Scottsdale. Thank you to the staff and general manager for making my daughters birthday so special!

Great sushi & side dishes. Each bite left me speechless.Great location in Old Downtown Scottsdale.Great, friendly service thank you Ashleigh & staff for making our dinner night awesome.Parking can be a challenge but there is valet if needed. The outside of the building is not very attractive but once inside, it’s warm, comfy & clean.
This is a great place for date night/business/friends & to meet people. They have a nice BIG bar where you can introduce yourself. In my opinion, not a spot for kids. $180 for (3) people which did not include alcohol. The hot green they open 4-10pm Mon-Thursday & Saturday Sunday till 11pm. My green tea was spot on, very favorable. Definitely an experience so make a reservation & enjoy!!!

Uchi is a must TO DO on your Scottsdale list. The ambience, service and quality of food makes you feel like you’re not in this country. We decided to try the “somakase” - server curated menu decided by you and the server - it did not disappoint. Gabrielle “Gabe” at the sushi bar was incredible! He could pick up your flavor profile with just a few prompts and offered selections that were over the top on quality and flavor. We left there wanting more even though our bellies were stuffed… and put it on our calendars already for the next time to come back. Thanksgiving has nothing on uchi!

I heard great things about food and experience. We did Chefs tasting and the food tasted phenomanal, however the 10 small courses was not worth almost 400$ per couple. The service was very low level, the service seemed rushed, the server was always in a hurry and explained each dish very fast and just didn’t take time to connect with us. For this price I expect prestige service from top to bottom. Do not do the chef’s tasting and expect great service. atmosphere is very casual and extremely loud- very disappointing.

We were in from Pittsburgh celebrating our 25th anniversary. I cancelled reservations at another restaurant to go to Uchi. Started great and we order the Waygu and rolls. The restaurant was half full and we still waited 15 minutes before our first roll arrived. The table next to us arrived later and began receiving all of their food in a timely manner. We received another rolll and I complained to the person who brought out the food about the timeliness of the food and no waygu. Her response was “well, we space out our food and your can cancel your order if you want”. So, my wife and I cancelled and paid the check and went somewhere else to eat the rest of our dinner. Desire was our server and was good and shared our frustration.

The staff here was great. Very attentive and friendly. The sushi was definitely not as good as a real sushi bar, but the steak dishes were amazing. The atmosphere was good except for a table of young kids being extremely loud and disrespectful. The only reason I'm giving 2 stars for atmosphere is because of that table and the fact that no employees addressed it. It was disruptive to everyone within a 30 foot radius and made the overall dining experience pretty miserable.

I must start with our placement perfect corner table to two. This is a lively restaurant and we are a little somber of a couple. Next was Nick he mad the best experience so genuine and knowledgeable about the offerings. Also must add all the people assisting were fantastic ( manger must know how to pick perfect employees).I am not going to call out what we ate but all was fantastic we picked a few items and shared between us from starter to the desert Nick picked !!!!!! We are planning another trip with friends in the next couple weeks. If all goes well I hope we sit in the back area and have Nick .

Great and inventive sushi with a mix of other Asian cuisines. It's expensive but the quality and flavor matches the price, in my opinion. Some people may not find it filling for the price, but you're really paying for artistry and flavor, not quantity. The wagyu carpaccio is a stand-out. The Uchi salad is inventively presented in bundles to grab and swipe through the dressing at the bottom with every bite. The shrimp tempura is as good as tempura can be. Karaage is one of the more filling and popular dishes as is the kinoko nabe (get it with gyutan supplement). Also filling is sakana mushi (like Thai coconut curry soup that is intensely flavorful). They really should serve this with some sort of bread or flatbread to soak up the sauce, or a side of rice if the bread is a bridge too far. It's worth your while to order anything that is your usual go to in a Japanese restaurant and you'll find it well executed and likely better than the last place you tried it. Otherwise, throw a dart at the menu and you're almost certain to be rewarded. Get dessert.

The outward appearance gives one a mystery box type appeal on first glance. I fell for it at least in principle. I’m a sucker for that. It opened in the winter but I just noticed it this week. The quality of the fish is excellent. The atmosphere is mid vibe. The service is good. The problem is the price. You can get similar quality fish with more original presentations - more traditional especially- at much better prices at a number of shops in scottsdale. This place is better than the place next door quality wise, but not nearly by enough to justify the price, which approaches 100% . I can’t recommend.

HUGE disappointment. If you are a traditionalist sushi fan, just know in advance.

Fish quality, exceptional Service, excellent. Atmosphere, phenomenal.

Poor execution.

Sushi bar, all Nigiri is seasoned in advance with whatever flavors the “chef” decides as appropriate. Would have been good to have been told in advance! The Ahi left an aftertaste in my mouth hours after. Sake was excellent - seemed to be just soy.

After “inquiring” and asking for traditional sushi - I received naked Saba and Hamachi. No soy, no wasabi, no ginger, just raw fish on rice.

I didn’t appreciate the attitude about not wanting to provide my cell phone number at check in with the hostess either. The faces I recieved when I said no… WOW.

Should be FIVE stars all around for anyplace with this kind of food quality, ell else aside.

Will go elsewhere next time.

I was extremely disappointed with this place. I spent $185 on two “rolls” (5 pieces) and a couple drinks. I would have said something to management for getting blatantly ripped off, but I was on a date and let it go. The food was terrible, I get better food/service from sushi neeko at an eighth of the price. On top of that they sat us in the tiniest booth I’ve ever seen backed up to a wall and said we had a time limit of an hour to use it (never been told that by a hostess in my life). It was too loud to talk, wasn’t expecting a night club vibe, very overhyped. Their vegetarian options were sad, I’ll stick to cafe monarch for my course meals. Only cool people there were the valet guys.

My only reason for not rating 5-stars: As someone who eats a lot, the courses are simply too small (4-6 bites) for such a steep price even given that it is a fancy restaurant.

Came to uchi for the first time and the food was great! Everything was phenomenal, but the service was horrible. First, it took a while to even get drinks when it wasn’t that busy. It started getting busy and stuff took a little long which I’m fine with, but the server completely forgot to ring up my friends order. We had to ask several times about it and they brought it out when me and my other friend was all done (over 30 minutes from first ordering for nigiri). Still worth it for the great food, but then we went to pay and split it three ways evenly. Not that hard, but she charges me way over what our bill was. Over 500 dollars (our bill was a little over 400 I think total). She then charged my card again for my part of the bill. Again, not the biggest deal as I’m sure she voided it, but she didn’t even tell me that happened. The food was so good, but service was horrible. I can deal with a few mishaps, but that many was concerning all in two hours.

The food was really delicious and we were really looking forward to this meal. The low stars are really for service. Our dinner was 2.5 hours. We often went 45 mins or more before an occasional plate of food was dropped. Our drinks even took almost 30 mins to arrive. We were overcharged by 20 dollars for one drink. I'll give it another shot but they really need to improve service and timing on food given their price point.

We called to change our reservation time and they happily agreed - when we arrived, they walked us to our seats on the patio - in the middle of June. We chose to sit at the bar instead and are so glad we did. The service from the bar staff was incredible. We ordered a lot but our favorites were the nigiri. The fish was extremely fresh and the flavors were spectacular. No soy sauce or ginger needed. We will be back and we will definitely sit at the bar again.

We had a terrible experience. Food was way below expectations and the service was poor. Wagu hot stone was a great idea but execution was poor - stuck to the stone and if you want to cook it you better be quick. Our favorite Japanese restaurant. The sushi is excellent quality. I prefer Uchi over all the the places I dined in Japan.
The atmosphere is unique and cozy.
I prefer to go during the daily happy hour for the following reasons: Avoid crowds, parking on the side street is usually available during this time and there is a reduced price happy hour menu. Yay!
As with many Japanese restaurants, please be aware that the portions are high quality but on the small side, so you may want to order a variety of dishes.
If you are looking for the best Japanese restaurant, then you have found it.
Enjoy

Made reservation for “reverse happy hour” (RHH) and called to verify reservation. It took the young lady on phone several minutes to verify as she was unaware of RHH during week. Received text from restaurant that seats were available early. Showed up early and was seated, however we had to wait as it wasn’t yet time for RHH. Seated and waiter took our drink orders. After 10 minutes no drinks. Waiter busy chatting up other couples. Caught eyes with another waiter and asked status of drink order. 30 seconds later she brings out drinks. Original waiter still chatting with customers.

Omakase was good, but a few comments:

1) we had multiple dishes served simultaneously. This is not good. Each dish should be served, finished, and table cleaned. Then next dish. At one point we had 3 dishes on table.
2) sushi chefs should never ever ever wear jewelry, watches, etc. while working.
3) sushi chefs should never ever ever shake hands with customers. Gross!!!!

Best sushi in Scottsdale. We’ve tried it four times so far. Dress is fairly casual, unlike many restaurants in Old Town. It’s amazing how they transformed the former Banderas into a very modern, simply designed sushi restaurant. Service is improving since they opened. If you’re not sure what to order, the omakase is a great way to try their dishes. You won’t find deep fried rolls here. Here are our favorites: slightly dirty martini, tempura shrimp, Hama chili, Debo scallop, wagu on hot stone, otoro fatty tuna, kinoko nabe mushroom & crispy rice; omakase: oysters from BC, wagyu carpaccio, sakara mushi white fish Tom takha soup, sake karai (salmon with shishito pepper on chile aeoli), Hama chile, lamb sirloin, blue fin nigiri, blue fin flight - chutoro is best. The rice they use in their sushi is amazing (slightly aromatic and a little firm) Reserve early. Great cocktails.

I’m going to be very critical as a Japanese born now American. I’m rounding up my 4.5 to a 5. The service and the atmosphere are great. The servers are knowledgeable enough for the regular crowd, but if you’re Japanese or a Japan connoisseur, it may fall short. But that’s ok. It is an imaginative/creative fusion concept after all, so temper your expectations. The order in which the food was presented could be better. But again, they did tell us it’s a tapas-family style sharing concept so things come out as they’re ready. I would have preferred all the sushi come out at once, instead it was Vancouver Uni first followed by the salad, then the rest of the sushi. They do have a nice selection of sake. I recommend pairing the Dassai 39 with the Chilean Uni. If they ever have the Hokkaido Uni, then go for the real deal. Go with the Chilean Uni over the Vancouver Uni if you’re torn over the choices. Take a sip of the sake after the Uni and appreciate the flavor. Be patient and don’t move to the next piece immediately. They’ll give you a peek of Japan in a comfortable upscale American setting. Go try it!

I made a few selections at first, and then he chose all the rest: the drinks, the sushi, and the desserts. I eat a lot of sashimi at a lot of places, and I was stunned at the different types that I had never had before. Tasmanian... something? Spanish Mackerel. Trout. And a handful of others that I should have written down so I could remember them.

Sit at the bar and trust Nick to pick the best food and mix the best drinks and you will be in great hands!

However the only thing is when it’s busy, the sound of people talking was super loud, probably because of the architecture of the building, it amplified the volume even more. Vianna was our server and she was amazing. Super helpful/ knowledgeable and she made our first time here a memorable one. Our friend Gabriel who is a chef at the restaurant gave us food recommendations to try. Here is his recommendations with the help of Vianna “Get ……. Overall, we would come back another time and try out more food.

If you like sushi this place is a must. Quite pricey but definitely worth the splurge. Our server was really friendly and helpful, and all the wait staff that brought our food over explained what everything was to us. The menu is quite confusing if you’re not a fish or Japanese food connoisseur, but we ordered a bunch of random stuff and there was literally nothing bad so just pick whatever and it will be delicious. Do not pass on dessert because the fried milk (as weird as it sounds) is phenomenal. Really cool vibes inside and a good date night place! Happy hour is a great way to try some things out and get a great deal out of it. Menu is printed new daily with lots of daily specials, and fish is flown in from Japan on the daily too so it’s all incredibly fresh. Again, it’s gonna be a pricier dinner but it’s totally worth it especially for sushi lovers.

Had to stop by Uchi to see what the hype was about, and it’s real yall ! Our dinner last night was absolutely incredible. And personally as a person who doesn’t eat seafood as much I really enjoyed myself! I first off have to say that our server Kainan made our evening !! He gave a wonderful recommendation for a floral sake (I believe it was yuki no bosha “cabin in the snow”) and helped beautifully guide our table through at least 8 different courses, all four of us leaving so full and happy at the end of the evening. If you get one dessert I would 1000% order the fried milk. Don’t second guess it just do it. My reaction? WOW! I honestly think I scared the table next to us when I had a bite. Oh! And their tempura definitely stood out to me, it was so light and crunchy- full of flavor !! This is for the girls- I will admit it is a little chilly in there, so if you easily get goosebumps after a cool breeze hits you I think it's best to bring a sweater/jacket. I definitely think this place is great and will be back in the future, and I appreciate the new unique taste this restaurant brings to Scottsdale!

Exceptional service and exceptional food! From the moment we walked in everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We sat at the sushi bar. Fran was an amazing waitress that was so attentive and Alan the sushi chef had great recommendations. Next time we’re in Scottsdale we will definitely be back.

We went on a Sunday night and a great experience at Uchi! Our server (I believe his name was Sebastian) was extremely knowledgeable and explained each dish in depth. He also provided recommendations based on our likes and dislikes. Everything he recommended was great (the hotate nigiri and hama chili were our favorites!) Pricing is very fair for fresh fish in the desert, the unique flavors, and the quality of the service we received.

The food is amazing, innovative, and tastes great. I know it's expensive and it's the worst to spend a fortune at a place where the food is mediocre. This is not that place. One of the few places in Scottsdale that is worth the price.

My wife and I were visiting Scottsdale from Raleigh, NC and this was hands down our favorite sushi experience we have ever had! We sat at the sushi bar and Gabe provided the absolutely best recommendations. Highly recommend this place, the atmosphere, service, and food are top notch. Also be sure to get the fried ice cream.

Excellent experience at Uchi. They are missing some items from their Austin and Dallas menu (I'm sure they are working on getting them on the menu as they have only been open at the Scottsdale location 2 months.) Recommend the Curated Tasting, where you work with your waiter to select the dishes best suited to match your palette and price point. This of this restaurant as Japanese Topas. The A5 wagyu nigiri, Fatty Tuna nigiri. and the crab with brown butter nigiri are the best bites of the evening.

During our visit to Scottsdale, we dined at Uchi twice. The first visit - I would’ve rated 10/10, five stars. The food was hands down 11/10. The flavours, the presentation was all impeccable. The service our first night was by far, exceptional - we were so warmly welcomed, educated on the menu and felt taken care of. We were so impressed that we wanted to come back the next day, had even told our server that we would be back tomorrow - which he excitedly responded that he would be here and to ask again to be seated in his area.

The following day, we came back and sat back in our initial servers section - however this experience from a service standpoint was CLEARLY different. We were not recognized, which was fine — I imagine the amount of tables/customers coming in on a given shift. Once we were seated, the service was great, drinks and food were coming out as normal and at reasonable pace. However, an apparent “regular” was seated next to us and was getting all the attention. They were being served 5+ dishes ahead of our table, while we sat at an empty table awaiting our upcoming dishes, one of our dishes was even delivered to their table to which they said - we didn’t order this and then looked over to my table and said “thanks for the extra salmon dish”.

We had to follow up with our server about our dishes and extra round of drinks ordered. It was quite disappointing given the exceptional service provided the night before.

We popped in on Friday afternoon for happy hour and were happy to find seats at the bar. It was very busy and a great atmosphere. Staff at host stand were lovely. We sat down to the bar and waited a very long time for service. The bar staff was nice but service was very slow. Where it got weird is how much attention the 3 different parties sitting around us were getting. But we were not in a hurry and just enjoying the scene so we were not bothered.....until they forgot some of our food and 45 min later we asked about it. They brought it out but both parties to our left and right were getting soooooo much free stuff. They kept comping rounds and brining out food for them to taste. Don't get me wrong we don't need free stuff it was just so odd to listen to the bartenders giving both people next to us soooooo much free food. Our other friends even came and were given free apps AND a $50 gift card to return. Meanwhile they didn't even offer to take care of our food that ended up taking an hour to come out. All around weird experience and several other friends mentioned they were given lots of comped food when they went. You don't have to give away free stuff. But if you are be mindful of the people you're ignoring sitting besides those people. Food was ok we will try again and see if we have a better experience.

Wow wow wow! Went in with a party of seven, all restaurant people and chefs, and we were blown away by amazing food and service. Everything was fresh, delicious great flavor profiles. We told our server how much we wanted to spend per person and she just ordered for us all to share. Really great experience. Highly recommend!

Uchi is mind-blowing, and such a win for Scottsdale. The interior design is super Japanese and peaceful. The sake options are amazing, and I’m so glad we were able to catch a bit of their happy hour too.

Our server was attentive and truly enjoyed walking us through the HH and standard menu. Standout hits include the salmon hand roll (happy hour), the wagyu striploin, and the sea bream nigiri. There were zero bad choices, and everything was so flavorful - worth the elevated price point.

I am so happy to say that they have a location in West Hollywood - can’t wait to check that out too!

Food/drinks were outstanding, so many great eclectic options. Our waitress was incredible and very attentive. The kitchen was a little slow, so be patient as they are just opening up and still getting into the swing of things, but we felt the food quality and service by far outweighed the wait time for our food. We will definitely be back.

Anxiously looking forward to trying this sushi! Currently sitting at the bar waiting for my carryout order. The roll next door to me looks FANTASTIC!!! The menu has no pictures and is difficult to understand BUT...the bartender, Lucas, took my order and was very understanding of my obvious confusion, very kindly offering me a free sample of their nigiri. It was delightful! A+++ service!!! Again, the menu is foreign to most people without showing needed pics. But everything else was great! A little slow...that's OK! :)

Uchi was a great experience with a great ambiance. I have been there twice the first time it was the first day they opened and it was great. I ordered a hot stone american wagyu, and it was extremely marbled and looked amazing with amazing flavor.
But I want to mention that the hot stone that I got at their grand opening was extremely marbled, but the second time I went is the one I put in the picture below. As you can see it's nowhere near marbled so I don't know why the first time my American wagyu looked like a Japanese Wagyu because it was grand opening day and I don't think that is very fair would be my only complaint, since the one pictured below is very chewy and I had to spit out two of the pieces.

But besides that everything else was great I have no other complaints

Uchi is an amazing experience from the moment you walk in. The door, the giant golden wall. Going to be seated felt so nice and cozy there’s so much happening to self guided tours of the extensive menu (for first timer) or the normal pick what you want (for seasoned customers) our server John was great he was very knowledgeable of the whole menu. He was very nice and professional explaining all the food that was placed down in front of me. For it being so busy on a Tuesday night food was amazing with so much flavors. The service was exceptional not to mention they have valet parking too

Uchi is our new favorite spot in Scottsdale! First the service, from the second you walk through the door, each employee is extremely kind, helpful and attentive. Both time we have been in, our server Fran, has been nothing short of extraordinary! With just a few questions about preferences, she has been able to curate the perfect menu to enjoy throughout the evening. A bonus is, Uchi has one of the best Espresso martinis in town! I highly recommend to anyone that wants to try some amazing sushi and Japanese dishes.

Overprice food, it is the same quality as RA sushi, which is not great. If you know what Toca Madera is, you can compare it to that in the sense that it’s a very hyped up spot but if you actually try the food it is seriously not good. If you’re looking for a great quality sushi spot, I would try across the pond (insane quality)and if you’re looking for a fusion spot Roka Akor.

Absolutely insane!!!!!!
A new spot in Old Town that will blow your mind. It was so good the first night that we ate there a second night in a row. I think I've now tried almost the entire menu.
The service is top notch, the presentation of each dish is creative, & the food itself makes my mouth water, just thinking about it. I didn't taste a dish I didn't love.
It's not inexpensive, but definitely worth every single penny.
I had cocktails the first visit & they were all excellent. And I had wine the second night. I thought the wine selection was adequate (not huge), but versatile and well priced.
You'll be happy you visited. From the moment you walk in the door the vibe and staff is welcoming! There's nothing else like it in Scottsdale.

SIMPLY OUTSTANDING, AMAZING, AND EPIC! Uchi was such a memorable experience, I don’t know where to begin. We opted for the curated tasting, and we had 12 different dishes, one more remarkable than the next. Our server, Megan, was the BEST! She was so attentive, knowledgeable, and accommodating. She took the experience from an A+ to an A+++. Everything we had – from the oysters to the sushi to the A5 wagyu to the fried milk dessert – everything was incredibly fresh and expertly prepared. I would literally fly from the East coast to Arizona just to get another taste of Uchi!
