“Kaizen” is the Japanese concept of continuous change and improvement. We have adopted this ethos and apply it respectfully in our approach to meticulously crafted, chef-driven sushi and omakase dishes. We feel that a great sushi experience is all about the finest ingredients, a detailed dedication to the craft, and an understanding of how food can reach across cultures to unite us.
This place gets 5 stars across the board. Food, service, and atmosphere are on point. The food is light and refreshing. After sharing 2 apps, 2 entrees, a sushi roll and dessert - we were pleasantly full (but not that heavy thanksgiving meal full). The entrees aren’t large but thoughtful in flavor and presentation. With specials that not change seasonal but monthly! The service was friendly and helpful with questions. Continuous water and checking in just the right amount of time. The atmosphere is this cool retro building that has been modified for businesses. The decor and vibe plus lighting gives it a sleek comfortable atmosphere. Perfect for a date or special occasion. It also has a killer happy hour on food till 6.

Update July 2024 - Kaizen is listed as “closed” but it’s not. They are trying a new business model of opening for pop ups twice a month with fixed priced meals. Look at their social media and website for details. I have included a sample menu and pictures of their first pop-up. Very reasonable price for $55 per person.
Just south of downtown Phoenix, Kaizen embodies the Japanese concept of continuous improvement, translating it into an artful fusion of meticulously crafted sushi and omakase dining. Their respectful application of this ethos shines through each dish, delivering a superb sushi experience by marrying the finest ingredients with a chef's detailed dedication to the craft. Our culinary exploration unfolded through five diverse courses, commencing with the creatively constructed Chawan Mushi soup—featuring egg custard, crab, scallops, shrimp, and seasonal vegetables. Transitioning through a traditional nigiri assortment, grilled octopus, braised miso short ribs, to a delightful dessert trio, Kaizen's innovative touch permeated every dish. Their commitment to innovation, coupled with an understanding of how food bridges cultures, makes Kaizen a standout culinary destination deserving of high recommendation, offering an exquisite journey of flavors and culinary craftsmanship.

We stopped by because of their awesome happy hour deals. The sushi is a bit overpriced if it's not happy hour, so we only come during that time. Service is very nice- as is the owner. The quality of the food is pretty good, and I like how they come up with original drinks. I also like that they have a decent vegetarian selection. The interior is sleek and clean, and usually seems to be poppin.

As a sushi connoisseur, I can say that Kaizen is THE PLACE to go in Phoenix. We have eaten at many a place on the west coast and by far, for AZ, this is the spot. Fish on point. Excellent service. Kitchen stays open up to 10 mins before closing. Full bar. Just a wonderful experience.

We went for a quick bite for happy hour. They were expecting full capacity but graciously still fit us in. We ordered several sushi rolls and a couple fried dishes. The tempura batter was light and fluffy, the way it should be. The ginger and wasabi were fresh which speaks to the quality of the restaurant. The sushi rolls were served at the right temperature and in bite-size pieces. They were well compressed so they didn't fall apart when you pick them up or dip them. The decor was well put together and I loved the modern layout but it was a little confusing knowing who the host/hostess was due to where the entrance was located. All the food was delicious and well prepared. The rolls were good, but won't blow you away (Which I believe is a product of eating sushi in the desert). The only negative was related to how new the staff clearly is. They had great customer service but the front-of-house didn't have their process "fine-tuned".
Would recommend for a casual night out, happy hour with friends or a relaxed date. Make a reservation on busy nights.

Went in for a quick bite for happy hour. The quality of the fish is just so good. The salmon was fresh, the rice is just right. The portions are huge even for happy hour. I got a veggie tempura for $6 that was bigger than my hands. The tuna roll is good as well! Service is nice, Chef Munoz knows how to pick his fish!

I'm ashamed to say I didn't take enough pictures. I was in the moment. The atmosphere is urban industrial and very well lit. I loved the ambiance, very posh. Their ahi tuna is arguably the best I had. They have local saki from Holbrook. The options on Wasabi were magical. I definitely will be back.

Had dinner with my wife here last week. Outdoor patio was great. It was cool and had a great view of the murals on the bldg across the street. The restaurant itself was very warm and inviting. The food was good. Service (Kiki) was prompt and friendly. We had sushi and a poke appetizer. For dessert we had the poached pear which my wife raved about all nite long. Lol. Altogether a good experience, the only negative for me would be the loud irritating music. Also, there is a 20% tip included for happy hour. I would go back. It was a very cool place.

What a difference a few years can make!! Music was no longer a main feature!! Food was visibly fresh and well managed, staff was quick, accurate and ready with paper menus. Sashimi platter features were well cut, fresh. Calamari app is crisped just right, not overcooked or under cooked. Sushi rolls I had N Lights and Señor Larry, rice was perfect!! Not overly soft or under done.
Great time!! Would actually take friends or family!!!
Non alcoholic mix drinks are available on request.

MAKE RESERVATIONS - The food is good and happy hour prices are worth stopping in to check out (honestly I wouldn't come if I was paying full price). BUT I have been here now multiple times, the first time we were turned away with no reservation (yet the restaurant appeared to be empty), so then the next handful of visits we made reservations to see your establishment not even a 1/3 filled or busy during our entire meal(s) (our time there was between 3 pm to 5 pm) just doesn't line up and honestly a little annoying.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Hamachi Shiso Agauchile paired with Clarified Shiso Aguachile (what a smooth cocktail) as suggested by my server Ethan. Afterwards I had the delicious New York Strip paired with wine. What an amazing experience, I look forward to my next visit. 🍽️

Parking: there's a lot attached and it wasn't at all obvious that that's for Kaizen. It is; you're safe to park there.
Absolutely fantastic sushi. Had the Señor Larry which was an amazing Mexican/Japanese fusion. The NY strip with a sake/miso reduction was incredible. The miso soup was fine (good, not great — nothing to write home about, but also not mad I got it). Will definitely go back.

Went during happy hour on a saturday around 430pm. It was relatively empty but started to fill up as we left. There are a lot of available options during happy hour, but they do add am automatic 20% gratuity from the original cost, which they are transparent about.
The food itself was fresh tasting and each dish was worth getting. The vegas roll was definitely the favorite of the sushi. I would also recommend the chicken karage and bacon chicken skewers. Im not a cocktail person so I cannot speak on those but they have a variety of options, including some seasonal stuff.

We visited for Happy Hour and made sure to try several dishes that we had been curious to taste. Everything was so delicious that we couldn't wait to take a picture and immediately started eating! I'm a big fan of the pulpo/octopus dish. The texture was perfect. I was pleasantly surprised by the gyoza dish, as well. The attention to detail in this dish elevated it from a humble appetizer/side dish to one of the highlights. The sushi was fresh, tasty and playful. It takes a great team to pull off the aspects of great food, great service, and great atmosphere. Kaizen consistently brings it! Can't wait to go again!

Incredible place to eat. The quality of the ingredients used is amazing, you can feel it with every bite, even making something so simple as miso soup to be delicious. We tried a bunch of different things on the menu and none failed to deliver.
Really all you need to know is how awesome the food is, but it's also a really well rounded experience. Happy hour is a great value; setting is cool; service is also top notch, had an issue with one dish and they dealt with it comprehensively and did more than what I would have asked for

Pretty sure this place gave me food poisoning. Waited 45 minutes for a chicken skewer after being told it was “coming out soon” 3-4 times. Was handed the bill without all of my food having even come out. Happy hour so it was a mandatory 20% gratuity despite the subpar service.
Since I had to go on antibiotics for the food poisoning (I still have to eat clear liquids), I looked up Kaizen on the AZ food inspection list. Under this address, the most recent inspection was in July showing that their meat fridge was above regulation (50 degrees instead of under 40°). This earned a B grade and the inspection website says that a follow up inspection is required within a week. However, there is no follow up inspection listed.
2 stars because the sushi tasted good, but it’s not worth the amount of money I’ve spent on doctors visits, throwing up all night, and infection that’s resulted.

I got sick just after coming here and was worried i got hit with food poisoning. But with my most recent doctor visit, they believe it is not the case. Regardless, i wanted to complement the manager and his team for their reply, the following converation we had and the excellent customer care and reassurance of the way they handle their food and shipments. I recommend them and am very glad to confirm they have a clean and safe resteraunt with good food.

Easy going spot in warehouse district. Inside reminds me of Culinary Dropout in Tempe as a shared building. We went with another couple and just hung out until closing on a Saturday night. Service was attentive and friendly. Manager checked in on us often.Order-to-service is quick. Creative bar drinks. If getting the coffee drink, specify sweet or unsweetened. The karange appetizer - soy marinated chicken bites is really good - enough for four of us to share. The shoshito peppers are hot and "alive" (not literally but see video!). We ordered several items. Carribean King and Senor Larry went over best. The latter was crunchy.

Top-notch sushi! We all shared ten dishes and all were excellent and well-presented. Great seasoning on the spicy edamame. Happy hour pricing is excellent with tons of options. Restaurant is hidden in what looks like a We Work converted warehouse, with no signage, so just trust Google Maps and enter at the center of the parking lot.

For someone coming in from out of town, this was a tad difficult to find. It is the Larry Building, but the sign for Kaizen is quite small. Once we found it, my colleagues and I were instantly blown away by the ambiance.
Everything was clean, modern, and eclectic. The only negative I would say is the music was too loud for my taste.
The miso soup was divine, as was the nigiri and rolls that we purchased. Everything comes out as it's done so we all ate off each other's plates to taste everything. If I am ever in the Phoenix area, I will be visiting Kaizen!

I went to Kaizen with my grandmother during happy hour (3-5pm) after seeing it listed as the number one sushi place in Phoenix, a title that was definitely deserved. I took my service dog and staff provided her with water and were very respectful. I do recommend reservations as without any you will likely be seated outside. It’s very rare you have food that elicits joy but every bite of sushi here did just that.

I like this place overall but had a negative experience today. Unfortunately, they charge a 20% mandatory tip during their happy hour regardless of party size. Additionally, this 20% tip is not on the actual total (including the half off happy hour discount) but instead a percentage on what the full price of those items would’ve been. I have never seen a place do something like this. Honestly, makes me seriously question what the baseline hourly rate for their employees is… as they are not only forcing a 20% tip, but also configuring that percentage as if you bought the items full price. This is really unfortunate because the food, drinks are really yummy and the ambiance is nice also.

The service was great, everyone was nice, the crowd was slow at first when we arrived but was fully packed once we left.
The food was excellent, we tried one of everything it felt like and would definitely try everything the servers recommend, they knew the menu best and they delivered.
The cocktails were delicious, we got the Mezcal Cocktail and the Lychee Martini, both of which were refreshing.
This place feels like a hidden gem, so if you’re lucky to stumble upon this place, I highly recommend checking them out!

Good sushi. But isn’t sushi always good. For me, it pretty much is. Higher priced tho, and not higher caliber ingredients and flavors and textures than my less expensive favorite sushi spot. 🍣 NOT worth the extra cost for honestly less than prime sushi.

This place is great. There was 7 of us for a birthday dinner and we really enjoyed ourselves. All of the food was delicious and unique. Our server Riley was on point too, thanks Riley!
The only complaint I had was the table and chairs, since it was a large party they had to put 2 round tables together which was kind of weird, and the chairs were not comfy at all.
However we had such a great time and the food and service were so good that I wouldn't let the table setup affect the rating because it was well worth it!

I don't like the open space model bc you cannot have a conversation with a group of a lot of people. Also my miso soup was lukewarm at best, gyoza was good, the star though was the vodka gimlet...best one I've ever had.

Looking for a downtown adventure without the headache of being downtown then this is the spot for you
As cozy as a warehouse can be you walk in and slightly turn left to be greeted by a hostess.
We adored our waitress as she helped us navigate all thing’s delicious
I highly recommend their gyoza as a starter as they are not served like many other places and have a textured crust about them that slowly melts as you eat them
The cocktails are also delicious and the bartender does a great job of offering a variety of options to be perfectly paired with the dishes you’re eating
Add this spot to your must try list and enjoy your night

A true gem, believe the reviews! Masquerading as a breakfast place in the morning and sushi in the evening, the atmosphere is stunning open and modern. Really unique menu, best potstickers or gyoza that we've ever had. The poke cones were a never before item, and we just had to try. Met all of our expectations.
Our server was outstanding, we even had a personal bonding. Super close to the stadiums. Will definitely be back

Okay so first of all let’s start with the happy hour everyday from 3-5. Even Saturdays! They do 50% off the whole menu and they add 20% gratuity which I honestly…think is more than reasonable. Literally only one thing that isn’t on the half off and it’s the steak which honestly to me is outrageously fair. Okay so pro-tip…look at the menu before you come and get some stuff put in right away because rightfully so, the place is packed. Also let’s talk about the cocktails. They’re beautiful and also half off during the happy hour. Everything is wonderful and delicious. Highly recommend, especially ag happy hour!

It's my neighborhood spot so I sometimes go for a quick bite by myself. Got seated quickly at the bar. Very busy Friday happy hour. Food is always top notch. Bartender was friendly and very quick. Total pro. As someone who has done my share of restaurant work, I am very happy to have a well run place like this. On the one occasion they had no seats (Elton John was playing next door) they apologized for not being able to seat me and gave me a card for a free tuna roll. That kind of class has insured my return business.

Food was great in taste, service was also great. The food however was lagging in quantity. Out side of the Yakisoba bowl we ordered (which was very good), everything else from the apps to the other entrees we re small portions. For the price, I was hoping the size and/or quantity of food would be greater. The spicy edamame needs to be scaled back a spicy level or two. We loooove a good spicy meal but that was over the top. The negima yakitori skewers were very good, but again very small in portion, for the price you pay. The sushi portions for the price, were a bit disappointing. Great ambience for this place.

NEW VISIT REVIEW 4 April 23
The staff seem to have changed somewhat. They are still just as friendly and hospitable, but the quality of service was slightly decreased on this visit. On an average busy, but not full, night, I sat for three minutes with an empty glass while eating a recorded entree due to the first octopus, Pulpo Asado, plate being burnt, charred and the meat way overdone... it was an assistant, not my server who saw and offered a fresh soda.
The sushi rolls I had, Philly and What Happens in Vegas, were as spectacular as every other visit. They were well put together, and had good fresh quality tasting ingredients. The presentation of all dishes was neat and clean.
As mentioned above, my first octopus plate came out with a crunchy pulpo tip and unrecognizable tentacles. The second dish was still a little overdone, but much better. I told them I was fine when they checked on the second plate satisfaction, I had simply decided at that point it was perhaps a newer cook unable to reach the fine balance of properly done and not having black burn on it. I just cut around the char this time and ate what was left.
Original review
FOODGASM!!!
Every single bite of every single item was above perfection. I am a foodie, I have been a paid food and service reviewer, I have dined at five stars down to dirty taco trucks, and I am still very picky. NOTHING FOOD WISE FAILED MY EXPECTATIONS AT ALL.
Every items was displayed beautifully, and the quality could be tasted from the first bite to the last swallow. Each item in the dishes had its own amazing unique flavor profile you could taste everything, sometimes the flavors layered, some came in stages even, and I have very rarely described anything with such admiration and respect food wise. Every ingredient tasted as fresh as it could.
The octopus, oh... my... gawd! I like it, but in my fifty years I have never once enjoyed the way it was prepared. I am a seafood lover extreme, and have often been heard saying I love any seafood, except octopus and claims except calamari. I've been often told the octopus can be great when made right. All these decades, and I finally found what made right tastes like. I will return here often just for that, but enjoy even more with it every time.
Now I saved the best for last. I have never heard of such a fully inclusive happy hour as this place. My date wanted somewhere nice for drinks and to sample a variety of appetizers. I found them through a New Times article for best happy hours and we both decided this was where we were going. EVERYTHING ON THE MENU IS HALF PRICE DURING HAPPY HOUR (except two specialty dishes). They will add an auto 20 percent gratuity during happy hour, but I made them work for it with the variety of dishes we tried.
The decor, ambiance is rated lower as it is located inside a warehouse business building and no large signs even to know where to go, but the open seating and types of seating also affected the score. There was a little bit of nice art on the walls, but honestly, I didn't go for the looks, I went for the tastes.

Was expecting Japanese sushi experience, found out it's supposed to be Japanese/Latin fusion. High quality food, just quite small portions for the price. Not everyone wants avocado in everything; or is it just me? Go during Happy hour from 3 to 5, Monday through Saturday & should not be disappointed. Whole menu half price, not just a handful of items like most places.

Great Japanese sushi fix in downtown Phoenix. We came for Valentine’s dinner and was greatly greeted and welcomed. We got the Dragon roll, Vegas roll and Rainbow roll. Pretty classic rolls, well done. In all honesty, not a huge roll selection and heavily overpriced. There is an available sashimi assortment option which we will be back for. Also, need to return for happy hour which is every day 3pm-5pm.

Great find on tue outskirts of downtown Phoenix. The food was delicious and Rachel was very kind and attentive waitress. The only issue we had is that all of the entrees came at very staggered times. She prepared us for this, but we weren't anticipating how far apart they would. Some finished their meals before others were ever served. If you are ok with that, then I would recommend this unique setting in an old warehouse with a lot of character

We were excited to make it in for happy hour on a Saturday night at 530pm because the whole menu was half off. Making a reservation is a must to get seated quickly because this place gets pretty busy. Parking was easy and loved the industrial looking atmosphere and chill ambiance. We ordered tuna poke cones, ceviche mixto, nigiri assortment, spicy tuna roll and northern lights roll. The tuna poke cones could've had a little more seasoning on the fish and the cones were stale. The ceviche mixto with the cholula hot sauce wasn't our favorite. The sauce almost tasted like ketchup was added, it didn't mesh well with the mix of fish and it was topped off with not so fresh avocado. It just didn't taste fresh so we ate only a couple bites and couldn't eat it anymore. The spicy tuna was good but it was a tiny roll. Maybe they make them the normal size when it isn't happy hour. We did enjoy the nigiri assortment and the northern lights roll. Overall the fish quality was pretty decent and the service was great. When we got our check, they automatically added a 20% gratuity on the regular priced items which wasn't ideal in our opinion. We'd love to leave the server a great tip since her service was stellar, but for subpar food we shouldn't be charged an extra 20 percent on full priced items that we didn't even like. Maybe I should've spoken up and returned the ceviche and the poke cones, I just didn't want to make an issue.

Had a great date night! Cocktails were delicious (Shibuhi and Blueberry Pie). We also ate the gyozo and each ordered a sushi roll. It was a little hard to hear each other since we were seated so close to the tables around us. We finished our date with a stroll around the other parts of the building looking at the artwork.

Have tried many sushi spots in phoenix and can say that this place is consistently the best in the valley! Always fresh, great service , food and drinks, food comes very fast!

Great atmosphere and very friendly staff. I definitely recommend coming during happy hour since mostly everything on the menu is half off. Both the karaage and the specialty roll tasted great.
Insider tip: this restaurant is located inside the industrial building. Once you go in the front doors, make a left.

One of my favorite places in Phoenix. All the food is amazing. It's of plenty of staples and new takes. Great drinks, perfect customer service and the atmosphere works for most occasions.
Can't recommend highly enough.

While finding the restaurant was a little challenging, the experience more than made up for any confusion.
The ambiance was modern and hip, my server amazing (& provided delicious recommendations), and the food simply delicious.
I'll definitely go back.

We love Kaizen. We come here every time we are in town.(sometimes more than once). The food is outstanding with unique items done extremely well. Much more than just Sushi. The service is the best in town. Friendly and attentive. They provide great recommendations. The staff practices a team effort in serving the patrons. A true “Kaizen” experience.

One of the bartenders hands me a big beer bottle I ordered and walks away. The beer has some already poured out. Then a girl comes and hands me a glass that's already half full. So they gave my beer to another customer, he started pouring it, and then you took it away?? Then two orders of our sashimi were given to other people. I don't know how long the sashimi plates were with the wrong table. But when the mistake was discovered, the guy just picked up the plates and placed them in front of us. WHAT?! Their happy hour deal is so good I had such high hopes this'll be the new go-to place. No matter how far it was. Now I'm not going back. Quality was very good too. But whatever the hell is going on with communication, or staff, or everything else, this is not ok. Good luck.

Very disappointed, we waited forever to get our food. They kept bringing rolls out one at a time over a 2-hour time period for our party of six. We finally had to complain to a manager to get our final four rolls. The food was average to poor, not worth the money. They clearly didn't have enough cook staff, but they kept seating new people who came in, who then had the same experience. Plus, they didn't offer to comp any of the extra drinks we ordered because of the long wait times...really poor management. I would not recommend this place!

Completely disappointed. They are money hungry the dishes are very very overpriced for the quality. I mean really guys!? My husband got terribly sick after eating your salmon carpaccio. On top of this it took over an hour for our appetizer to arrive. Do not recommend

Kaizen for dinner:
Despite having some dietary restrictions (shellfish allergy, I know), I still enjoyed and loved this place. It would be nice if there were more vegetarian options, but I knew what I signed up for. The drinks and service were fantastic. I’ll always be back.
Kaizen for breakfast:
They have one of the best breakfast burritos in town, with an amazing house salsa. Their coffee is pretty bomb too. This is one of my go-to spots.

Love the sushi. Have gone several times, never disappointed.
Would give a 5 star on service if it wasn't for their shady practice of automatically putting a tip on all checks during happy hour. Tip is not an entitlement, some of us tip more than 20% if service is good. The staff doesn't tell customers so you will double tip if you don't pay attention.

Nothing special. Japanese with a Mexican twist but needs to improve. Pork belly was dry!! They were nice enough to take it off our check. Sashimi was ok. Oyesters could be better. Hardly any sake choices.

Good food but the price to the portion is not in balance. $700 later (before tip) and our party of 8 were still hungry.

Being a foodie & always searching for really great food around AZ - big disappointment: restaurant didn't have their 'special' of the month any longer; my guest was served her meal 1/2 hr prior to my receiving my 'sushi' (thinking they had to drive somewhere to get it; was NOT impressed with the sushi at all - nothing special; more disappointments; waited almost an hour before I got my order but lady who came in well after we did got her sushi a whole lot earlier than myself; no one came to apologize; no one gave us an appetizer or mark down our bill for the inconvenience - just as a courtesy & just good business!

Me and my gf left utterly disappointed. I know how Google reviews matter to businesses so I preface my review saying that I don't write poor reviews unless I feel compelled to.
Food was ok, but service kinda ruined it.
Our server could not get the order right , gave us chicken bacon skewer as opposed to negima. When I notified her , there was no apology. My gf cannot eat pork so was left hungry for ....another 20 mins.
The server checked in on us , I told her about the order and again no apology or anything , said "it is coming it is coming".
The food came.
Proper shio yakitori should be served salted and warm. Ours was neither warm or seasoned. Meat was nice and moist though not sure worth 6 bucks each.
I had high hopes for veggie tempura , only to be disappointed with a load of cauliflower and broccoli. Well neither of them are suitable or proper for tempura , not something expected of a reputable place like here , certainly not anywhere in Japan. I gave em the benefit of the doubt but only to bite into an unpleasant mush of undercooked batter. No thanks.
We asked for the check. I understand that gratuity is important, but automatic added 20 percent for a party of two felt like a slap in the face after the very fact that we decided to leave due to an unpleasant experience. Side note is the 20 percent of the total before happy hour discounts. I wouldn't have minded it if the service was great , but me and my gf had to laugh knowing we paid 15 dollars for tips and 38 for food.
Unfortunately we won't be back. Not like this place needs my business anyway but in any case the owner might consider some honest feedback, here it is.
